Consider independent fair coin flips at each site of the lattice ℤd. A translation-equivariant matching rule is a perfect matching of heads to tails that commutes with translations of ℤd and is given by a deterministic function of the coin flips. Let ZΦ be the distance from the origin to its partner, under the translation-equivariant matching rule Φ. Holroyd and Peres (2005) asked, what is the optimal tail behaviour of ZΦ for translation-equivariant perfect matching rules? We prove that, for every d ≥ 2, there exists a translation-equivariant perfect matching rule Φ such that EZΦ2/3-ε < ∞ for every ε > 0.

A large-scale service system with multiple customer classes and multiple server pools is considered, with the mean service time depending both on the customer class and server pool. The allowed activities (routeing choices) form a tree (in the graph with vertices being both customer classes and server pools). We study the behavior of the system under a leaf activity priority (LAP) policy, introduced by Stolyar and Yudovina (2012). An asymptotic regime is considered, where the arrival rate of customers and number of servers in each pool tend to ∞ in proportion to a scaling parameter r, while the overall system load remains strictly subcritical. We prove tightness of diffusion-scaled (centered at the equilibrium point and scaled down by r−1/2) invariant distributions. As a consequence, we obtain a limit interchange result: the limit of diffusion-scaled invariant distributions is equal to the invariant distribution of the limiting diffusion process.

In this paper we consider reflected diffusions with positive and negative jumps, constrained to lie in the nonnegative orthant of ℝn. We allow for the drift and diffusion coefficients, as well as for the directions of reflection, to be random fields over time and space. We provide a boundary behavior characterization, generalizing known results in the nonrandom coefficients and constant directions of the reflection case. In particular, the regulator processes are related to semimartingale local times at the boundaries, and they are shown not to charge the times the process expends at the intersection of boundary faces. Using the boundary results, we extend the conditions for product-form distributions in the stationary regime to the case when the drift and diffusion coefficients, as well as the directions of reflection, are random fields over space.

We examine the long-time behavior of forward rates in the framework of Heath-Jarrow-Morton-Musiela models with infinite-dimensional Lévy noise. We give an explicit condition under which the rates have a mean reversion property. In a special case we show that this condition is fulfilled for any Lévy process with variance smaller than a given constant, depending only on the state space and the volatility.

In this paper we describe a perfect simulation algorithm for the stable M/G/c queue. Sigman (2011) showed how to build a dominated coupling-from-the-past algorithm for perfect simulation of the super-stable M/G/c queue operating under first-come-first-served discipline. Sigman's method used a dominating process provided by the corresponding M/G/1 queue (using Wolff's sample path monotonicity, which applies when service durations are coupled in order of initiation of service). The method exploited the fact that the workload process for the M/G/1 queue remains the same under different queueing disciplines, in particular under the processor sharing discipline, for which a dynamic reversibility property holds. We generalise Sigman's construction to the stable case by comparing the M/G/c queue to a copy run under random assignment. This allows us to produce a naïve perfect simulation algorithm based on running the dominating process back to the time it first empties. We also construct a more efficient algorithm that uses sandwiching by lower and upper processes constructed as coupled M/G/c queues started respectively from the empty state and the state of the M/G/c queue under random assignment. A careful analysis shows that appropriate ordering relationships can still be maintained, so long as service durations continue to be coupled in order of initiation of service. We summarise statistical checks of simulation output, and demonstrate that the mean run-time is finite so long as the second moment of the service duration distribution is finite.

In this paper we extend the existing literature on the asymptotic behavior of the partial sums and the sample covariances of long-memory stochastic volatility models in the case of infinite variance. We also consider models with leverage, for which our results are entirely new in the infinite-variance case. Depending on the interplay between the tail behavior and the intensity of dependence, two types of convergence rates and limiting distributions can arise. In particular, we show that the asymptotic behavior of partial sums is the same for both long memory in stochastic volatility and models with leverage, whereas there is a crucial difference when sample covariances are considered.

We analyze a stable GI/G/1 queue that starts operating at time t = 0 with N0 ≠ 0 customers. First, we analyze the time required for this queue to empty for the first time. Under the assumption that both the interarrival and the service time distributions are of the exponential type, we prove that , where λ and μ are the arrival and the service rates. Furthermore, assuming in addition that the interarrival time distribution is of the non-lattice type, we show that the settling time of the queue is essentially equal to N0/(μ –λ); that is, we prove that where is the total variation distance between the distribution of the number of customers in the system at time t and its steady-state distribution. Finally, we show that there is a similarity between the queue we analyze and a simple fluid model.

Consider the total service time of a job on an unreliable server under preemptive-repeat-different and preemptive-resume service disciplines. With identical initial conditions, for both cases, we notice that the distributions of the total service time under these two disciplines coincide, when the original service time (without interruptions due to server failures) is exponential and independent of the server reliability. We show that this fact under varying server reliability is a characterization of the exponential distribution. Further we show, under the same initial conditions, that the coincidence of the mean values also leads to the same characterization.

A large deviation theorem of the Cramér–Petrov type and a ranking limit theorem of Loève are used to derive an approximation for the statistical distribution of the failure time of fibrous materials. For that, fibrous materials are modeled as a series of independent and identical bundles of parallel filaments and the asymptotic distribution of their failure time is determined in terms of statistical characteristics of the individual filaments, as both the number of filaments in each bundle and the number of bundles in the chain grow large simultaneously. While keeping the number n of filaments in each bundle fixed and increasing only the chain length k leads to a Weibull limiting distribution for the failure time, letting both increase in such a way that log k(n) = o(n), we show that the limit distribution is for . Since fibrous materials which are both long and have many filaments prevail, the result is of importance in the materials science area since refined approximations to failure-time distributions can be achieved.

The problem of optimally allocating partially effective, defensive weapons against randomly arriving enemy aircraft so that a bomber maximizes its probability of reaching its designated target is considered in the usual continuous-time context, and in a discrete-time context. The problem becomes that of determining the optimal number of missiles K(n, t) to use against an enemy aircraft encountered at time (distance) t away from the target when n is the number of remaining weapons (missiles) in the bomber's arsenal. Various questions associated with the properties of the function K are explored including the long-standing, unproven conjecture that it is a non-decreasing function of its first variable.

Let {N(t)} be a renewal process having the associated age process {X(t)}. Of interest is the counting process {M(t)} characterized by a non-homogeneous Poisson process with age-dependent intensity function λ (X(t)). The trivariate process {Y(t) = [M(t), N(t), X(t)]} is analyzed obtaining its Laplace transform generating function explicitly. Based on this result, asymptotic behavior of {S(t) = cM(t) + dN(t)} as t → ∞ is discussed. Furthermore, a sufficient condition is given under which {M(t), –N(t), X(t)} is stochastically monotone and associated. This condition also assures increasing stochastic convexity of {M(t)}. The usefulness of these results is demonstrated through an application to the age-dependent minimal repair problem.

In this paper we derive some of the main ergodicity properties of a class of Markov renewal processes and the associated marked point processes. This class represents a generic model of applied probability and is of importance in earthquake modeling, reliability theory and queueing.

In this paper we introduce the transparent dead leaves (TDL) random field, a new germ-grain model in which the grains are combined according to a transparency principle. Informally, this model may be seen as the superposition of infinitely many semitransparent objects. It is therefore of interest in view of the modeling of natural images. Properties of this new model are established and a simulation algorithm is proposed. The main contribution of the paper is to establish a central limit theorem, showing that, when varying the transparency of the grain from opacity to total transparency, the TDL model ranges from the dead leaves model to a Gaussian random field.

We consider a parametrization of the Heath-Jarrow-Morton (HJM) family of term structure of interest rate models that allows a finite-dimensional Markovian representation of the stochastic dynamics. This parametrization results from letting the volatility function depend on time to maturity and on two factors: the instantaneous spot rate and one fixed-maturity forward rate. Our main purpose is an estimation methodology for which we have to model the observations under the historical probability measure. This leads us to consider as an additional third factor the market price of interest rate risk, that connects the historical and the HJM martingale measures. Assuming that the information comes from noisy observations of the fixed-maturity forward rate, the purpose is to estimate recursively, on the basis of this information, the three Markovian factors as well as the parameters in the model, in particular those in the volatility function. This leads to a nonlinear filtering problem, for the solution of which we describe an approximation methodology, based on time discretization and quantization. We prove the convergence of the approximate filters for each of the observed trajectories.

In this paper we describe methods for randomly thinning certain classes of spatial point processes. In the case of a Markov point process, the proposed method involves a dependent thinning of a spatial birth-and-death process, where clans of ancestors associated with the original points are identified, and where we simulate backwards and forwards in order to obtain the thinned process. In the case of a Cox process, a simple independent thinning technique is proposed. In both cases, the thinning results in a Poisson process if and only if the true Papangelou conditional intensity is used, and, thus, can be used as a graphical exploratory tool for inspecting the goodness-of-fit of a spatial point process model. Several examples, including clustered and inhibitive point processes, are considered.

The objective of this paper is to give a rigorous analysis of a stochastic spatial model of producer-consumer systems that has been recently introduced by Kang and the author to understand the role of space in ecological communities in which individuals compete for resources. Each point of the square lattice is occupied by an individual which is characterized by one of two possible types, and updates its type in continuous time at rate 1. Each individual being thought of as a producer and consumer of resources, the new type at each update is chosen at random from a certain interaction neighborhood according to probabilities proportional to the ability of the neighbors to consume the resource produced by the individual to be updated. In addition to giving a complete qualitative picture of the phase diagram of the spatial model, our results indicate that the nonspatial deterministic mean-field approximation of the stochastic process fails to describe the behavior of the system in the presence of local interactions. In particular, we prove that, in the parameter region where the nonspatial model displays bistability, there is a dominant type that wins regardless of its initial density in the spatial model, and that the inclusion of space also translates into a significant reduction of the parameter region where both types coexist.

The existence of a class of multitype measure branching processes is deduced from a single-type model introduced by Li [8], which extends the work of Gorostiza and Lopez-Mimbela [5] and shows that the study of a multitype process can sometimes be reduced to that of a single-type one.

We investigate the asymptotic distribution of the number of exceedances among d identically distributed but not necessarily independent random variables (RVs) above a sequence of increasing thresholds, conditional on the assumption that there is at least one exceedance. Our results enable the computation of the fragility index, which represents the expected number of exceedances, given that there is at least one exceedance. Computed from the first d RVs of a strictly stationary sequence, we show that, under appropriate conditions, the reciprocal of the fragility index converges to the extremal index corresponding to the stationary sequence as d increases.

An urn contains m types of balls of unequal numbers. Let ni be the number of balls of type i, i = 1, 2, …, m. Balls are drawn with replacement until first duplication. In the case of finite memory of order k, the distribution of Ym,k, the number of drawings required, is discussed. Special cases are obtained.

A navigation on a set of points S is a rule for choosing which point to move to from the present point in order to progress toward a specified target. We study some navigations in the plane where S is a nonuniform Poisson point process (in a finite domain) with intensity going to +∞. We show the convergence of the traveller's path lengths, and give the number of stages and the geometry of the traveller's trajectories, uniformly for all starting points and targets, for several navigations of geometric nature. Other costs are also considered. This leads to asymptotic results on the stretch factors of random Yao graphs and random θ-graphs.
