We consider a single server first-come-first-served queue with a stationary and ergodic input. The service rate is a general function of the workload in the queue. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the system and the asymptotic convergence of the workload process to a finite stationary process at large times. Then, we consider acyclic networks of queues in which the service rate of any queue is a function of the workloads of this and of all the preceding queues. The stability problem is again studied. The results are then extended to analogous systems with periodic inputs.

We study a service facility modeled as a queueing system with finite or infinite capacity. Arriving customers enter if there is room in the facility and if they are willing to pay the price posted by the service provider. Customers belong to one of a finite number of classes that have different willingnesses-to-pay. Moreover, there is a penalty for congestion in the facility in the form of state-dependent holding costs. The service provider may advertise class-specific prices that may fluctuate over time. We show the existence of a unique optimal stationary pricing policy in a continuous and unbounded action space that maximizes the long-run average profit per unit time. We determine an expression for this policy under certain conditions. We also analyze the structure and the properties of this policy.

We propose a simple stochastic volatility model which is analytically tractable, very easy to simulate, and which captures some relevant stylized facts of financial assets, including scaling properties. In particular, the model displays a crossover in the log-return distribution from power-law tails (small time) to a Gaussian behavior (large time), slow decay in the volatility autocorrelation, and multiscaling of moments. Despite its few parameters, the model is able to fit several key features of the time series of financial indexes, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, with remarkable accuracy.

As an alternative to the embedding technique of T. E. Harris, S. Karlin and J. McGregor, we show that given a critical Galton–Watson process satisfying some mild assumptions, we can always construct a continuous-time Markov branching process having the same asymptotic behaviour as the given process. Thus, via the associated continuous process, additional information about the original process is obtained. We apply this technique to the study of extinction probabilities of a critical Galton–Watson process, and provide estimates for the extinction probabilities by regularly varying functions.

In the bond percolation process on the square lattice, with let S(k) be the probability that some open path joins the longer sides of a sponge with dimensions k by a log k. There exists a positive constant α = αp such that Consequently, the subset of the square lattice {(x, y):0 ≦ y ≦ f(x)} which lies between the curve y = f(x) and the x-axis has the same critical probability as the square lattice itself if and only if f(x)/log x → ∞ as x → ∞.

Non-linear stochastic systems driven by white noise are analysed from the viewpoint of non-linear oscillation theory. Under various familiar hypotheses concerning dissipative and restorative dynamical forces, the existence and uniqueness, asymptotic growth, and oscillatory behavior of the solutions are demonstrated.

The stochastic Lagrange wave model is a realistic alternative to the Gaussian linear wave model, which has been successfully used in ocean engineering for more than half a century. In this paper we present the slope distributions and other characteristic distributions at level crossings for asymmetric Lagrange time waves, i.e. what can be observed at a fixed measuring station, thereby extending results previously given for space waves. The distributions are given as expectations in a multivariate normal distribution, and they have to be evaluated by simulation or numerical integration. Interesting characteristic variables are the slope in time, the slope in space, and the vertical particle velocity when the waves are observed close to instances when the water level crosses a predetermined level. The theory has been made possible by recent generalizations of Rice's formula for the expected number of marked crossings in random fields.

Suppose a smooth surface S is exposed to a penetrating beam of parallel line rays and that, wherever a ray has a tangency with S, there is a corresponding point registration in an image plane H placed perpendicular to the beam. The registering rays form a cylindrical surface which registers in H as a smooth curve C (except possibly for a number of cusps). Properties of C when the beam is taken isotropic random in space are investigated, and stereological applications are noted. The phenomenon of screening of projecting rays, which occurs for example with opaque surfaces exposed to light beams, is considered. Limiting processes permit extensions of the formulae to the cases in which S contains curved edges and in which any boundary curves of S also register. Finally, various related types of random tangent to a surface are considered.

We consider a class of sample covariance matrices of the form Q = TXX*T*, where X = (xij) is an M×N rectangular matrix consisting of independent and identically distributed entries, and T is a deterministic matrix such that T*T is diagonal. Assuming that M is comparable to N, we prove that the distribution of the components of the right singular vectors close to the edge singular values agrees with that of Gaussian ensembles provided the first two moments of xij coincide with the Gaussian random variables. For the right singular vectors associated with the bulk singular values, the same conclusion holds if the first four moments of xij match those of the Gaussian random variables. Similar results hold for the left singular vectors if we further assume that T is diagonal.

In this paper we consider first-passage percolation on certain one-dimensional periodic graphs, such as the nearest neighbour graph for d, K ≥ 1. We expose a regenerative structure within the first-passage process, and use this structure to show that both length and weight of minimal-weight paths present a typical one-dimensional asymptotic behaviour. Apart from a strong law of large numbers, we derive a central limit theorem, a law of the iterated logarithm, and a Donsker theorem for these quantities. In addition, we prove that the mean and variance of the length and weight of minimizing paths are monotone in the distance between their end-points, and further show how the regenerative idea can be used to couple two first-passage processes to eventually coincide. Using this coupling we derive a 0–1 law.

This paper is concerned with a nonstationary Markovian chain of cascading damage that constitutes an iterated version of a classical damage model. The main problem under study is to determine the exact distribution of the total outcome of this process when the cascade of damages finally stops. Two different applications are discussed, namely the final size for a wide class of SIR (susceptible → infective → removed) epidemic models and the total number of failures for a system of components in reliability. The starting point of our analysis is the recent work of Lefèvre (2007) on a first-crossing problem for the cumulated partial sums of independent parametric distributions, possibly nonstationary but stable by convolution. A key mathematical tool is provided by a nonstandard family of remarkable polynomials, called the generalised Abel–Gontcharoff polynomials. Somewhat surprisingly, the approach followed will allow us to relax some model assumptions usually made in epidemic theory and reliability. To close, approximation by a branching process is also investigated to a certain extent.

In generalization of the well-known formulae for quermass densities of stationary and isotropic Boolean models, we prove corresponding results for densities of mixed volumes in the stationary situation and show how they can be used to determine the intensity of non-isotropic Boolean models Z in d-dimensional space for d = 2, 3, 4. We then consider non-stationary Boolean models and extend results of Fallert on quermass densities to densities of mixed volumes. In particular, we present explicit formulae for a planar inhomogeneous Boolean model with circular grains.

Grenander et al. (1991) proposed a conditional cyclic Gaussian Markov random field model for the edges of a closed outline in the plane. In this paper the model is recast as an improper cyclic Gaussian Markov random field for the vertices. The limiting behaviour of this model when the vertices become closely spaced is also described and in particular its relationship with the theory of ‘snakes' (Kass et al. 1987) is established. Applications are given in Grenander et al. (1991), Mardia et al. (1991) and Kent et al. (1992).

For linear-cost-adjusted and geometric-discounted infinite sequences of i.i.d. random variables, point process convergence results are proved as the cost or discounting effect diminishes. These process convergence results are combined with continuous-mapping principles to obtain results on joint convergence of suprema and threshold-stopped random variables, and last-exit times and locations. Applications are made to several classical optimal stopping problems in these settings.

Regular variation provides a convenient theoretical framework for studying large events. In the multivariate setting, the spectral measure characterizes the dependence structure of the extremes. This measure gathers information on the localization of extreme events and often has sparse support since severe events do not simultaneously occur in all directions. However, it is defined through weak convergence, which does not provide a natural way to capture this sparsity structure. In this paper, we introduce the notion of sparse regular variation, which makes it possible to better learn the dependence structure of extreme events. This concept is based on the Euclidean projection onto the simplex, for which efficient algorithms are known. We prove that under mild assumptions sparse regular variation and regular variation are equivalent notions, and we establish several results for sparsely regularly varying random vectors.

A body receives a sequence of rotations through a fixed angle about an axis whose direction is arbitrary. The probability distribution governing the resulting orientation of the body is determined. The problem is generalized to the case where the axis of each individual rotation makes the same angle, Θ, with an axis fixed in the body but is otherwise random. The resulting distribution is shown, in the case , to reduce to the Roberts-Ursell distribution for random walk on a sphere. Some diffusion limits are examined.

A dynamic co-operative two-person game with imperfect information is considered, in which the conflicting aspects of an optimal policy (choice of actions to minimise ‘own cost’, and choice of actions to optimise communication of information) can to a large extent be decoupled and solved separately. In deriving a strategy which is asymptotically optimal (in a sense explained) we derive formulae for the capacity of a vector Gaussian channel and the rate-distortion of a vector Gaussian source.

It is shown that the optimal strategy is in general non-linear in observables, but a numerical example shows that, at least in one rather special but non-trivial case, the best linear strategy may be very nearly optimal. This conclusion is made explicit by the analysis of Section 7.

Vertices arrive sequentially in space and are joined to existing vertices at random according to a preferential rule combining degree and spatial proximity. We investigate phase transitions in the resulting graph as the relative strengths of these two components of the attachment rule are varied.

Previous work of one of the authors showed that when the geometric component is weak, the limiting degree sequence mimics the standard Barabási-Albert preferential attachment model. We show that at the other extreme, in the case of a sufficiently strong geometric component, the limiting degree sequence mimics a purely geometric model, the on-line nearest-neighbour graph, for which we prove some extensions of known results. We also show the presence of an intermediate regime, with behaviour distinct from both the on-line nearest-neighbour graph and the Barabási-Albert model; in this regime, we obtain a stretched exponential upper bound on the degree sequence.

The covariogram gK(x) of a convex body K ⊆ Ed is the function which associates to each x ∈ Ed the volume of the intersection of K with K + x, where Ed denotes the Euclidean d-dimensional space. Matheron (1986) asked whether gK determines K, up to translations and reflections in a point. Positive answers to Matheron's question have been obtained for large classes of planar convex bodies, while for d ≥ 3 there are both positive and negative results. One of the purposes of this paper is to sharpen some of the known results on Matheron's conjecture indicating how much of the covariogram information is needed to get the uniqueness of determination. We indicate some subsets of the support of the covariogram, with arbitrarily small Lebesgue measure, such that the covariogram, restricted to those subsets, identifies certain geometric properties of the body. These results are more precise in the planar case, but some of them, both positive and negative ones, are proved for bodies of any dimension. Moreover some results regard most convex bodies, in the Baire category sense. Another purpose is to extend the class of convex bodies for which Matheron's conjecture is confirmed by including all planar convex bodies possessing two nondegenerate boundary arcs being reflections of each other.

Given sets C and R in d-dimensional space, take a constant intensity Poisson point process on R; the associated scan statistic S is the maximum number of Poisson points in any translate of C. As R becomes large with C fixed, bounded and open but otherwise arbitrary, the distribution of S becomes concentrated on at most two adjacent integers. A similar result holds when the underlying Poisson process is replaced by a binomial point process, and these results can be extended to a large class of nonuniform distributions. Also, similar results hold for other finite-range scanning schemes such as the clique number of a geometric graph.
