The literature suggests that product and product-service system (PSS) design problems are characteristically different. However, there is limited empirical evidence to suggest that the design cognition specific to the respective design activities is different. This article reports the findings of a comparative study of protocols of conceptual product and PSS designing carried out in a laboratory environment by 28 pairs of experienced product designers from the manufacturing industry. First, differences between product and PSS design problems were theoretically characterized in terms of their respective sources of complexity. Based on these differences, hypotheses concerning differences in the cognitive processes of conceptual product and PSS designing were developed and empirically tested. Results indicate that PSS designing by experienced product designers is more problem-focused while product designing is more solution-focused. PSS designing was found to focus more on the design issue function and the design process formulation. Further, PSS designing was more likely to apply a depth-first search strategy, while product designing was more apt to apply a breadth-first search strategy. Results point towards the need to support the analysis of derived behavior of structure and the application of a breadth-first strategy during PSS designing by product designers.

There has been limited research on African policy instruments’ historical and institutional nature in health policy literature. However, in the field of health systems research, there are many examples that show the permanent use of financing instruments inspired by liberal (pro-market) ideas such as user fees, performance bonuses, or private practice of medicine in Africa. Through an analysis of archives (1840–1960), this article shows the presence of these instruments in the health system during the French colonial period in Senegal. Thus, this study shows that these financing policy instruments’ institutional presence and longevity are part of a liberal approach that predates international organizations’ contemporary (and liberal) promotion. This study uses a historical and institutionalist approach to understand the context, actors, and underlying factors that allowed for this historical continuity, resulting in the permanence of these instruments.

Gaseous hydrogen chemically reacting with air in lean premixed mode yields essentially water vapour enabling to decarbonise aeronautical propulsion systems. When hydrogen fuel is produced by electrolysis, the impact on Earth is neutral on a life-cycle basis. Hydrogen fuel, combined to swirled premixed combustion mode, is a sustainable method for thermal-powered aviation. Knowledge gaps have hindered progress in the field and no laboratory-scale demonstrations have been made to date in the specific 100% H2/Air swirled premixed regime. This study describes an experiment established to: (1) demonstrate this highly swirled lean fully premixed H2/Air combustion mode and (2) -describe the underlying flame stabilisation principle. Theoretical results enable pioneering the first-to-date experimental stabilisation for these flames. Measurements with optical diagnostics including chemiluminescence and shadowgraphy direct imaging provide insights into the flame position and the flame regime. This experimental demonstration confirms that the kinematic balance between the flame displacement speed and the flow velocity is critical along with the flame-wall interaction at the bluff-body. It is shown that flashback can be mitigated. The present experiment can be replicated and utilised for application in several scientific disciplines and for advancing technologies. The experimental demonstration, regime characterisation method and mechanism description documented here open the perspective to deploy clean hydrogen combustion to decarbonise aviation with low nitrogen oxides emissions. The combination of high-swirl fully premixed H2/Air experimental data and the theoretical results are unique.

Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) is one of the most problematic weeds in turfgrass due to its fast growth rate and high tuber production. Effective long-term control relies on translocation of systemic herbicides to underground tubers. Two identical trials were conducted simultaneously in separate greenhouses to evaluate the effect of several acetolactate synthase (ALS) and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibiting postemergence herbicides on C. esculentus tuber production and viability. Seven tubers were planted into 1 L pots, and plants were allowed to mature for 6 weeks before trial initiation. Treatments included pyrimisulfan at 73 g ai ha-1 once or 49 g ai ha-1 twice, imazosulfuron at 736 g ai ha-1 once or 420 g ai ha-1 twice, carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone at 22 + 198 g ai ha-1 once or 14 + 127 g ai ha-1 twice, halosulfuron at 70 g ai ha-1 once or 35 g ai ha-1 twice, and a non-treated control. Sequential applications were made 3 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT) for both trials. Both single and sequential applications of carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone exhibited the quickest control (80 to 83% 4 WAIT). Two applications of imazosulfuron resulted in the greatest reduction in tuber number (81%) and tuber dry biomass (85%), while one application of carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone resulted in the greatest reduction in shoot biomass (71%). The viability of tubers that were recovered from each pot was reduced 48 to 70%, with the greatest reduction in response to carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone. Although two applications of pyrimisulfan only resulted in tuber number and shoot biomass reductions of 66% and 38%, respectively, tuber dry biomass reduction was 80%. Therefore, pyrimisulfan, imazosulfuron, halosulfuron, and carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone are all viable options for long-term C. esculentus control in turfgrass.

This paper focuses on the developmental tendencies and mechanisms underlying the unfolding of mood systems in Romance complement clauses. In view of the fact that the subsequent dynamics of change can be better understood and motivated against the backdrop of the Latin system, we take the basic structure of the Latin mood system as the reference and necessary starting point of our analysis. After briefly discussing the basic approaches to the mechanisms of mood change in the relevant research literature that puts forward notions like ‘modal harmony’, ‘regrammation’, ‘lexicalization’, and ‘conventionalization’, the article develops a modal–semantic perspective that casts a different light on the convergent and divergent developments of mood in the complement clause domain of Romance languages. The modal–semantic approach allows, apart from a coherent description and analysis of the developments, recasting the question of whether mood, especially the subjunctive, also comes with its own semantic value(s) in complement clauses. This modal–semantic approach not only provides a coherent description and analysis of the developments but also allows for a re-examination of the abstract semantics of the subjunctive mood (in complement clauses), spelling out its basic semantic features.

Thomas Cranmer appropriated the eucharistic theology of Cyril of Alexandria for the purposes of constructing a Reformed eucharistic theology and in a way that did not do justice to Cyril’s eucharistic theology. Cyril argued for a mingling of both the corporal and spiritual presence of Christ in both the incarnation and the Eucharist, whereas Cranmer affirms such a mingling in the incarnation alone but not in the Eucharist. Ashley Null has recently defended Cranmer’s appropriation of Cyril for the construction of Reformed eucharistic theology. This article concludes that both Thomas Cranmer’s appropriation and Null’s defence of Cranmer are not viable interpretations of Cyril’s eucharistic theology.

Global path planning using roadmap (RM) path-planning methods including Voronoi diagram (VD), rapidly exploring random trees (RRT), and probabilistic roadmap (PRM) has gained popularity over the years in robotics. These global path-planning methods are usually combined with other path-planning techniques to achieve collision-free robot control to a specified destination. However, it is unclear which of these methods is the best choice to compute the efficient path in terms of path length, computation time, path safety, and consistency of path computation. This article reviewed and adopted a comparative research methodology to perform a comparative analysis to determine the efficiency of these methods in terms of path optimality, safety, consistency, and computation time. A hundred maps of different complexities with obstacle occupancy rates ranging from 50.95% to 78.42% were used to evaluate the performance of the RM path-planning methods. Each method demonstrated unique strengths and limitations. The study provides critical insights into their relative performance, highlighting application-specific recommendations for selecting the most suitable RM method. These findings contribute to advancing robot path-planning techniques by offering a detailed evaluation of widely adopted methods.

Sample transparency aberration in Bragg–Brentano geometry affected by interference with opaque and translucent sample holders has been formulated. The formulation for an opaque sample holder should be classified to 5 cases, depending on the apparent diffraction angle, beam width, specimen width, and specimen thickness. The cumulants of the aberration function for a translucent sample holder with an arbitrary linear attenuation coefficient can numerically be evaluated by a Gauss–Legendre quadrature. The use of a function defined by the convolution of truncated exponential and rectangular functions has been tested as the model for the aberration function. A double deconvolutional treatment (DCT) designed to cancel the effects of the first and third order cumulants of the aberration function has been applied to the XRD data of Si standard powder, NIST SRM640d. The diffraction peak profile in the data treated by the DCT method certainly shows improved symmetry. The main features of the symmetrized peak profile in the DCT data have been simulated by instrumental and specimen parameters. It is suggested that the current analytical method could be utilized for texture analysis, if the manufacturer of an XRD instrument should supply a more accurate information about the instrument.

While sustainable development scholarship has explored ways to tie Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to law, little is known about how they are embedded in domestic legal systems. This article takes a critical look at the legislative implementation of SDGs under the Sustainable Development Act (SDA) in Sri Lanka. The United Nations (UN) Member States have adopted different legal strategies to implement the SDGs. Many countries have utilized institutional mechanisms under existing national laws. Sri Lanka, however, is one of the few nations that has specific legislation for sustainable development but is only partly enforced. This article reveals both promises and limitations of Sri Lanka’s SDA, based on a comparison of Canadian legislation, and suggests some lessons when adopting legislation to implement the SDGs.

To estimate accurately the parameters of a regression model, the sample size must be large enough relative to the number of possible predictors for the model. In practice, sufficient data is often lacking, which can lead to overfitting of the model and, as a consequence, unreliable predictions of the outcome of new patients. Pooling data from different data sets collected in different (medical) centers would alleviate this problem, but is often not feasible due to privacy regulation or logistic problems. An alternative route would be to analyze the local data in the centers separately and combine the statistical inference results with the Bayesian Federated Inference (BFI) methodology. The aim of this approach is to compute from the inference results in separate centers what would have been found if the statistical analysis was performed on the combined data. We explain the methodology under homogeneity and heterogeneity across the populations in the separate centers, and give real life examples for better understanding. Excellent performance of the proposed methodology is shown. An R-package to do all the calculations has been developed and is illustrated in this article. The mathematical details are given in the Appendix.

Steringotrema microacetabularis Suriano & Martorelli, 1983 (Fellodistomidae) was described from the flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus. Later, it was redescribed, based on new material from the same host and type locality, and reconsidered as Bacciger microacetabularis (Baccigeridae). The main difference noted in the redescription was the presence of spines on the body. However, the lack of DNA data made confirming the true affiliation of this digenean challenging. New specimens sampled from P. orbignyanus allowed us to sequence the 28S, ITS, and COI genes. Fresh specimens were stained to compare their morphology with the holotype and voucher specimens. The digeneans found correspond with those reported from Mar Chiquita, described as B. microacetabularis (=S. microacetabularis). Genetic analyses clustered the newly sequenced individuals within the Cryptogonimidae, showing relationships with Oligogonotylus manteri, Tabascotrema verai, and Caecincola parvulus (28S); T. verai, Lobosorchis spp., Euryakaina manilensis, and Metadena marina (ITS); and Siphoderina spp. (COI). After comparing the species with cryptogonimids lacking spines in the oral sucker, a new genus, Surianotrema n. gen., is described. This genus increases the number of cryptogonimid genera known in South America to seven – three in freshwater and four in marine environments – with Surianotrema n. gen. being the first to be sequenced. New sequences from other South American cryptogonimids are necessary to better understand the phylogenetic relationships between genera within this family, particularly in South America.

This paper focuses on two phenomena in Irish agreement – namely, complementarity between overt in-situ arguments and agreement, and the obviation of this complementarity under A-movement. An analysis of these facts is offered in terms of the defective goal ‘incorporation’ (DGI) mechanism proposed by Roberts (2010), and applied to cases of complementarity in Bantu languages by Iorio (2014), and van der Wal (2015, 2020, 2022), as well as asymmetric chains under A-movement, consisting of a full copy and a pronominal $ \phi $-feature bundle; cf. similar configurations discussed by Takahashi & Hulsey (2009), Harizanov (2014), Kramer (2014), Baker & Kramer (2018), inter alios. It is shown that this approach accounts for the facts in Irish and that the same account can be extended to explain facts concerning participial agreement in, for example, Italian. Additional cross-linguistic implications are also considered, particularly with respect to French and Welsh.

The alignment of artificial intelligence (AI) systems with societal values and the public interest is a critical challenge in the field of AI ethics and governance. Traditional approaches, such as Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) and Constitutional AI, often rely on pre-defined high-level ethical principles. This article critiques these conventional alignment frameworks through the philosophical perspectives of pragmatism and public interest theory, arguing against their rigidity and disconnect with practical impacts. It proposes an alternative alignment strategy that reverses the traditional logic, focusing on empirical evidence and the real-world effects of AI systems. By emphasizing practical outcomes and continuous adaptation, this pragmatic approach aims to ensure that AI technologies are developed according to the principles that are derived from the observable impacts produced by technology applications.

Does low mood have intentional content? If so, what is it? Philosophers have tried to answer both questions by appealing to low mood’s phenomenal character. However, appeals to phenomenology have not settled this debate. Thus, I take a different approach: I tackle both questions by examining low mood’s complex functional role in cognition. I argue that if we take this role into account, we have excellent reason to believe that low mood a) has content, and b) has the following indicative-imperative content: Good events are, on average, less likely to occur than bad events & Limit [the subject’s] resource expenditure!
