In this paper we give a solution of an optimal stopping problem concerning random walks with non-zero drift, thereby proving the necessity of the existence of ESτ for Wald's equation ESτ = ES1 · Ετ to hold, even if attention is restricted to non-randomized stopping times τ. This answers a question of Robbins and Samuel (1966).

Both paper and author (D. R. McNeil, (1968)) will be referred to below as DRM. The said paper deals with the following situation: an intersection is controlled by a traffic light with a fixed cycle time, T; the possibility of other delays, e.g., due to turning vehicles, is ignored; arrivals at the light form a compound Poisson process; if vehicles arrive to find the light green and the queue empty they are not delayed, while in the contrary case they depart when they reach the head of the queue, providing the light is green, each vehicle taking a constant time to move off. The distribution of the number of alleles in samples from r chromosomes is studied. The stochastic model used includes gene conversion within chromosomes and mutation at loci on the chromosomes. A method is described for simulating the distribution of alleles and an algorithm given for computing lower bounds for the mean number of alleles.

A formula is derived for the expected number of samples from r chromosomes which contain the allele type of a locus chosen at random.

Methods of evaluating the coefficients of high powers of functions defined by power series with positive coefficients are considered. Such methods, which were originally used by Laplace, can, for example, be used to obtain asymptotic formulae for Stirling numbers. They are equivalent to using local lattice central limit theorems. An alternative method using direct numerical integration on a contour integral giving the required coefficient is described. Exact bounds for the accuracy of this method can often be obtained by considerations of the unimodality of discrete distributions. The results are illustrated using convolutions of the rectangular and logarithmic distributions.

A limit theorem is proved for semi-Markov processes, which depend on a small parameter, tending to 0, in the case when the processes have an absorbing state and some asymptotically non-essential states and one asymptotically essential state. The application of the theorem is illustrated by an example from reliability theory.

The properties of frequency distributions of inter-event intervals in the pooled output of several point processes where the points can be distinguished are investigated. In the case where the component processes are mutually independent, the p.d.f.'s of inter-event intervals in the pooled output are explicitly expressed, and the reciprocal relations on the p.d.f.'s and on the numbers of inter-event intervals are revealed.

We prove a surprising symmetry between the law of the size $G_n$ of the greedy independent set on a uniform Cayley tree $ \mathcal{T}_n$ of size n and that of its complement. We show that $G_n$ has the same law as the number of vertices at even height in $ \mathcal{T}_n$ rooted at a uniform vertex. This enables us to compute the exact law of $G_n$ . We also give a Markovian construction of the greedy independent set, which highlights the symmetry of $G_n$ and whose proof uses a new Markovian exploration of rooted Cayley trees that is of independent interest.

We consider a class of multitype Galton–Watson branching processes with a countably infinite type set $\mathcal{X}_d$ whose mean progeny matrices have a block lower Hessenberg form. For these processes, we study the probabilities $\textbf{\textit{q}}(A)$ of extinction in sets of types $A\subseteq \mathcal{X}_d$ . We compare $\textbf{\textit{q}}(A)$ with the global extinction probability $\textbf{\textit{q}} = \textbf{\textit{q}}(\mathcal{X}_d)$ , that is, the probability that the population eventually becomes empty, and with the partial extinction probability $\tilde{\textbf{\textit{q}}}$ , that is, the probability that all types eventually disappear from the population. After deriving partial and global extinction criteria, we develop conditions for $\textbf{\textit{q}} < \textbf{\textit{q}}(A) < \tilde{\textbf{\textit{q}}}$ . We then present an iterative method to compute the vector $\textbf{\textit{q}}(A)$ for any set A. Finally, we investigate the location of the vectors $\textbf{\textit{q}}(A)$ in the set of fixed points of the progeny generating vector.

In the type II counter with constant deadtime, particles which arrive within some constant time τ following another particle are unrecorded. We can think of this process as an alternating sequence of gaps and bunches of events. Gaps have duration > τ, while the intervals between any successive pair of events within a bunch are all ≦ τ. Counter theory is usually concerned with the distribution of intervals between recorded events (i.e., the first event of each bunch) and the distribution of the number of recorded events in a given time interval. In the case where the events form a renewal process this has been studied intensively by Pyke [2], Smith [5] and Takács [6].

We consider epidemics in populations that are partitioned into small groups known as households. Whilst infectious, a typical infective makes global and local contact with individuals chosen independently and uniformly from the whole population or their own household, as appropriate. Previously, the classical Poisson approximation for the number of survivors of a severe epidemic has been extended to the household model. However, in the current work we exploit a Sellke-type construction of the epidemic process, which enables the derivation of sufficient conditions for the existence of a compound Poisson limit theorem for the survivors of the epidemic. The results are specialised to the Reed-Frost and general stochastic epidemic models.

In this paper, a moderate deviation theorem for one-dimensional stable random walks in random scenery is proved. The proof relies on the analysis of maximum local times of stable random walks, and the comparison of moments between random walks in random scenery and self-intersection local times of the underlying random walks.

A sequence of independent, identically distributed random variables is observed. After a sample of m has been collected attention is fixed to a particular observation. In this paper the fluctuations of the rank of this observation, as sampling continues, will be studied.

The process can be modelled by a Pólya urn scheme, and new results are obtained which are of interest in both sequential rank and Pólya urn contexts.

In 1952 Pollaczek discovered a remarkable formula for the Laplace-Stieltjes transforms of the distributions of the ordered partial sums for a sequence of independent and identically distributed real random variables. In this paper Pollaczek's result is proved in a simple way and is extended for a semi-Markov sequence of real random variables.

We examine a Markov manpower system in continuous time where demotion rates are 0 and promotion rates are time-dependent. The transient and limiting behaviours of the model are discussed, and illustrated with examples.

Although the exact expressions for the extinction probabilities of the Interacting Branching Collision Processes (IBCP) were very recently given by Chen et al. [4], some of these expressions are very complicated; hence, useful information regarding asymptotic behaviour, for example, is harder to obtain. Also, these exact expressions take very different forms for different cases and thus seem lacking in homogeneity. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic behaviour of these extremely complicated and tangled expressions for extinction probabilities of IBCP follows an elegant and homogenous power law which takes a very simple form. In fact, we are able to show that if the extinction is not certain then the extinction probabilities {an} follow an harmonious and simple asymptotic law of an ∼ kn-αρcn as n → ∞, where k and α are two constants, ρc is the unique positive zero of the C(s), and C(s) is the generating function of the infinitesimal collision rates. Moreover, the interesting and important quantity α takes a very simple and uniform form which could be interpreted as the ‘spectrum’, ranging from -∞ to +∞, of the interaction between the two components of branching and collision of the IBCP.

In this paper we give an analytic solution for graphs with n nodes and E = cn log n edges for which the probability of obtaining a given graph G is µn (G) = exp (- β ∑i=1ndi2), where di is the degree of node i. We describe how this model appears in the context of load balancing in communication networks, namely peer-to-peer overlays. We then analyse the degree distribution of such graphs and show that the degrees are concentrated around their mean value. Finally, we derive asymptotic results for the number of edges crossing a graph cut and use these results (i) to compute the graph expansion and conductance, and (ii) to analyse the graph resilience to random failures.

Kingman (1962) studied the effect of queue discipline on the mean and variance of the waiting time. He made no assumptions regarding the stochastic nature of the input and the service distributions, except that the input and service processes are independent of each other. When the following two conditions hold:

1. (a) no server sits idle while there are customers waiting to be served;

2. (b) the busy period is finite with probability one (i.e., the queue empties infinitely often with probability one);

We consider the drawing with and without replacement models from numerical populations. For order statistics based on the above drawing schemes, we provide sharp upper bounds for their variances, expressed in the single observation variance units. We also characterize the populations for which the bounds are attained.
