The said paper deals with the following situation: an intersection is controlled by a traffic light with a fixed cycle time, T; the possibility of other delays, e.g., due to turning vehicles, is ignored; arrivals at the light form a compound Poisson process; if vehicles arrive to find the light green and the queue empty they are not delayed, while in the contrary case they depart when they reach the head of the queue, providing the light is green, each vehicle taking a constant time to move off. Kingman (1962) studied the effect of queue discipline on the mean and variance of the waiting time. He made no assumptions regarding the stochastic nature of the input and the service distributions, except that the input and service processes are independent of each other. When the following two conditions hold:

1. (a) no server sits idle while there are customers waiting to be served;

2. (b) the busy period is finite with probability one (i.e., the queue empties infinitely often with probability one);

In this paper, to model cascading failures, a new stochastic failure model is proposed. In a system subject to cascading failures, after each failure of the component, the remaining component suffers from increased load or stress. This results in shortened residual lifetimes of the remaining components. In this paper, to model this effect, the concept of the usual stochastic order is employed along with the accelerated life test model, and a new general class of stochastic failure models is generated.

We provide a general purpose result for the coupling of exploration processes of random graphs, both undirected and directed, with their local weak limits when this limit is a marked Galton–Watson process. This class includes in particular the configuration model and the family of inhomogeneous random graphs with rank-1 kernel. Vertices in the graph are allowed to have attributes on a general separable metric space and can potentially influence the construction of the graph itself. The coupling holds for any fixed depth of a breadth-first exploration process.

We consider estimation of the spot volatility in a stochastic boundary model with one-sided microstructure noise for high-frequency limit order prices. Based on discrete, noisy observations of an Itô semimartingale with jumps and general stochastic volatility, we present a simple and explicit estimator using local order statistics. We establish consistency and stable central limit theorems as asymptotic properties. The asymptotic analysis builds upon an expansion of tail probabilities for the order statistics based on a generalized arcsine law. In order to use the involved distribution of local order statistics for a bias correction, an efficient numerical algorithm is developed. We demonstrate the finite-sample performance of the estimation in a Monte Carlo simulation.

It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $\beta$ -mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $\beta$ -mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $\beta$ -mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple, it should prove very useful in obtaining rates of mixing in situations where geometric ergodicity cannot be established. To illustrate our results we derive new subgeometric ergodicity and $\beta$ -mixing results for the self-exciting threshold autoregressive model.

In first-passage percolation models, the passage time T(0,L) from the origin to a point L is expected to exhibit deviations of order |L|χ from its mean, while minimizing paths are expected to exhibit fluctuations of order |L|ξ away from the straight line segment . Here, for Euclidean models in dimension d, we establish the lower bounds ξ ≥ 1/(d+1) and χ ≥(1-(d-1)ξ)/2. Combining this latter bound with the known upper bound ξ ≤ 3/4 yields that χ ≥ 1/8 for d=2.

This paper studies the transient and steady-state behaviour of a continuous and discrete-time queueing system with non-Markovian type of departure mechanism. The Laplace transforms of the probability generating function of the time-dependent queue length distribution in the transient state are obtained and the probability generating function of the queue length distribution in the steady state is derived therefrom. Finally, some particular cases are discussed.

The problem of constructing an optimal coadapted coupling for a pair of symmetric random walks on Z2d was considered by Connor and Jacka (2008), and the existence of a coupling which is stochastically fastest in the class of all such coadapted couplings was demonstrated. In this paper we show how to generalise this construction to an optimal coadapted coupling for the continuous-time symmetric random walk on Knd, where Kn is the complete graph with n vertices. Moreover, we show that although this coupling is not maximal for any n (i.e. it does not achieve equality in the coupling inequality), it does tend to a maximal coupling as n → ∞.

Results and methods discussed in two previous papers are extended to other cases. Comparison is made with recent work by Pickard (1980) and an earlier conjecture is disproved.

The concept of isotropically random mosaic introduced by Pielou, is recalled. The notion of anisotropically random mosaic with respect to a point is defined. An example is given.

We consider a diffusion process on the reals subject to the conditional probability that the process is positive from t = 0 to the present. We establish comparison results between the conditioned diffusion and a second unconditioned Markov diffusion. One result allows the initial process to be non-Markov before conditioning. A stronger comparison theorem is shown to hold in the Markov case.

A sequence of independent, identically distributed random variables is observed. After a sample of m has been collected attention is fixed to a particular observation. In this paper the fluctuations of the rank of this observation, as sampling continues, will be studied.

The process can be modelled by a Pólya urn scheme, and new results are obtained which are of interest in both sequential rank and Pólya urn contexts.

The equilibrium delay distribution for a system with finite-source input, constant service time, and s > 1 servers, as determined by simulation, showed the existence of values of t such that the probability of delay greater than t is a non-monotone function of the input intensity. Since repeated efforts to remove this counter-intuitive result by debugging failed, a simple case was attacked by analytical and numerical methods; and the same anomaly was revealed. The method of analysis is described and an explanation of the result is offered.

We also derive various other distributional results involving the pair (X, M), including for example the distribution of ; in particular we show that, in case δ. = 1, when Pr{0 < τ < ∞} = 1, the ratio τ+/τ has the arc-sine distribution.

We study a class of growing systems of random walks on regular trees, known as frog models with geometric lifetime in the literature. With the help of results from renewal theory, we derive new bounds for their critical parameters. Our approach also improves the existing bounds for the critical parameter of a percolation model on trees known as cone percolation.

De Bruijn's identity relates two important concepts in information theory: Fisher information and differential entropy. Unlike the common practice in the literature, in this paper we consider general additive non-Gaussian noise channels where more realistically, the input signal and additive noise are not independently distributed. It is shown that, for general dependent signal and noise, the first derivative of the differential entropy is directly related to the conditional mean estimate of the input. Then, by using Gaussian and Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern copulas, special versions of the result are given in the respective case of additive normally distributed noise. The previous result on independent Gaussian noise channels is included as a special case. Illustrative examples are also provided.
