Designing an algorithm with a singly exponential complexity for computing semialgebraic triangulations of a given semialgebraic set has been a holy grail in algorithmic semialgebraic geometry. More precisely, given a description of a semialgebraic set $S \subset \mathbb {R}^k$ by a first-order quantifier-free formula in the language of the reals, the goal is to output a simplicial complex $\Delta $, whose geometric realization, $|\Delta |$, is semialgebraically homeomorphic to S. In this paper, we consider a weaker version of this question. We prove that for any $\ell \geq 0$, there exists an algorithm which takes as input a description of a semialgebraic subset $S \subset \mathbb {R}^k$ given by a quantifier-free first-order formula $\phi $ in the language of the reals and produces as output a simplicial complex $\Delta $, whose geometric realization, $|\Delta |$ is $\ell $-equivalent to S. The complexity of our algorithm is bounded by $(sd)^{k^{O(\ell )}}$, where s is the number of polynomials appearing in the formula $\phi $, and d a bound on their degrees. For fixed $\ell $, this bound is singly exponential in k. In particular, since $\ell $-equivalence implies that the homotopy groups up to dimension $\ell $ of $|\Delta |$ are isomorphic to those of S, we obtain a reduction (having singly exponential complexity) of the problem of computing the first $\ell $ homotopy groups of S to the combinatorial problem of computing the first $\ell $ homotopy groups of a finite simplicial complex of size bounded by $(sd)^{k^{O(\ell )}}$.

We give an explicit characterization on the singularities of exceptional pairs in any dimension. In particular, we show that any exceptional Fano surface is $\frac {1}{42}$-lc. As corollaries, we show that any $\mathbb R$-complementary surface X has an n-complement for some integer $n\leq 192\cdot 84^{128\cdot 42^5}\approx 10^{10^{10.5}}$, and Tian’s alpha invariant for any surface is $\leq 3\sqrt {2}\cdot 84^{64\cdot 42^5}\approx 10^{10^{10.2}}$. Although the latter two values are expected to be far from being optimal, they are the first explicit upper bounds of these two algebraic invariants for surfaces.

We introduce the notion of a simple fibration in $(1,2)$-surfaces – that is, a hypersurface inside a certain weighted projective space bundle over a curve such that the general fibre is a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=2$ and $K^2=1$. We prove that almost all Gorenstein simple fibrations over the projective line with at worst canonical singularities are canonical threefolds ‘on the Noether line’ with $K^3=\frac 43 p_g-\frac {10}3$, and we classify them. Among them, we find all the canonical threefolds on the Noether line that have previously appeared in the literature.

The Gorenstein simple fibrations over ${\mathbb {P}}^1$ are Cartier divisors in a toric $4$-fold. This allows to us to show, among other things, that the previously known canonical threefolds on the Noether line form an open subset of the moduli space of canonical threefolds, that the general element of this component is a Mori Dream Space and that there is a second component when the geometric genus is congruent to $6$ modulo $8$; the threefolds in this component are new.

Given finite configurations $P_1, \dots , P_n \subset \mathbb {R}^d$, let us denote by $\mathbf {m}_{\mathbb {R}^d}(P_1, \dots , P_n)$ the maximum density a set $A \subseteq \mathbb {R}^d$ can have without containing congruent copies of any $P_i$. We will initiate the study of this geometrical parameter, called the independence density of the considered configurations, and give several results we believe are interesting. For instance we show that, under suitable size and nondegeneracy conditions, $\mathbf {m}_{\mathbb {R}^d}(t_1 P_1, t_2 P_2, \dots , t_n P_n)$ progressively ‘untangles’ and tends to $\prod _{i=1}^n \mathbf {m}_{\mathbb {R}^d}(P_i)$ as the ratios $t_{i+1}/t_i$ between consecutive dilation parameters grow large; this shows an exponential decay on the density when forbidding multiple dilates of a given configuration, and gives a common generalization of theorems by Bourgain and by Bukh in geometric Ramsey theory. We also consider the analogous parameter $\mathbf {m}_{\mathbb {S}^d}(P_1, \dots , P_n)$ in the more complicated framework of sets on the unit sphere $\mathbb {S}^d$, obtaining the corresponding results in this setting.

We answer an open problem posed by Iarrobino, Hilbert scheme of points: Overview of last ten years. Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics, 46 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1987), 297–320: Is there a component of the punctual Hilbert scheme [Grothendieck, Techniques de construction et théorèmes d'existence en géométrie algébrique. IV. Les schémas de Hilbert', in Séminaire Bourbaki, 6 (Societe Mathematique de France, Paris, 1995), 221, 249–276] $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hilb}}^d({\mathscr {O}}_{\mathbb {A}^n,p})$ with dimension less than $(n-1)(d-1)$? For each $n\geq 4$, we construct an infinite class of elementary components in $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hilb}}^d(\mathbb {A}^n)$ producing such examples. Our techniques also allow us to construct an explicit example of a local Artinian ring [Iarrobino and Kanev, Power sums, Gorenstein algebras, and determinantal loci (Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1999), 221–226] of the form with trivial negative tangents, vanishing nonnegative obstruction space, and socle-dimension $2$.

We produce a large class of generalized cluster structures on the Drinfeld double of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ that are compatible with Poisson brackets given by Belavin–Drinfeld classification. The resulting construction is compatible with the previous results on cluster structures on $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$.

We describe a family of compactifications of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions of a triangulated category, following earlier work by Bapat, Deopurkar and Licata. We particularly consider the case of the 2-Calabi–Yau category of the $A_2$ quiver. The compactification is the closure of an embedding (depending on q) of the stability space into an infinite-dimensional projective space. In the $A_2$ case, the three-strand braid group $B_3$ acts on this closure. We describe two distinguished braid group orbits in the boundary, points of which can be identified with certain rational functions in q. Points in one of the orbits are exactly the q-deformed rational numbers recently introduced by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, while the other orbit gives a new q-deformation of the rational numbers. Specialising q to a positive real number, we obtain a complete description of the boundary of the compactification.

Sarnak’s density conjecture is an explicit bound on the multiplicities of nontempered representations in a sequence of cocompact congruence arithmetic lattices in a semisimple Lie group, which is motivated by the work of Sarnak and Xue ([58]). The goal of this work is to discuss similar hypotheses, their interrelation and their applications. We mainly focus on two properties – the spectral spherical density hypothesis and the geometric Weak injective radius property. Our results are strongest in the p-adic case, where we show that the two properties are equivalent, and both imply Sarnak’s general density hypothesis. One possible application is that either the spherical density hypothesis or the Weak injective radius property imply Sarnak’s optimal lifting property ([57]). Conjecturally, all those properties should hold in great generality. We hope that this work will motivate their proofs in new cases.

We consider the large polaron described by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian and study its energy-momentum relation defined as the lowest possible energy as a function of the total momentum. Using a suitable family of trial states, we derive an optimal parabolic upper bound for the energy-momentum relation in the limit of strong coupling. The upper bound consists of a momentum independent term that agrees with the predicted two-term expansion for the ground state energy of the strongly coupled polaron at rest and a term that is quadratic in the momentum with coefficient given by the inverse of twice the classical effective mass introduced by Landau and Pekar.

We introduce semidistrim lattices, a simultaneous generalization of semidistributive and trim lattices that preserves many of their common properties. We prove that the elements of a semidistrim lattice correspond to the independent sets in an associated graph called the Galois graph, that products and intervals of semidistrim lattices are semidistrim and that the order complex of a semidistrim lattice is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere.

Semidistrim lattices have a natural rowmotion operator, which simultaneously generalizes Barnard’s $\overline \kappa $ map on semidistributive lattices as well as Thomas and the second author’s rowmotion on trim lattices. Every lattice has an associated pop-stack sorting operator that sends an element x to the meet of the elements covered by x. For semidistrim lattices, we are able to derive several intimate connections between rowmotion and pop-stack sorting, one of which involves independent dominating sets of the Galois graph.

We study the Hodge and weight filtrations on the localization along a hypersurface, using methods from birational geometry and the V-filtration induced by a local defining equation. These filtrations give rise to ideal sheaves called weighted Hodge ideals, which include the adjoint ideal and a multiplier ideal. We analyze their local and global properties, from which we deduce applications related to singularities of hypersurfaces of smooth varieties.

Let $(S,L)$ be a general polarised Enriques surface, with L not numerically 2-divisible. We prove the existence of regular components of all Severi varieties of irreducible nodal curves in the linear system $|L|$, that is, for any number of nodes $\delta =0, \ldots , p_a(L)-1$. This solves a classical open problem and gives a positive answer to a recent conjecture of Pandharipande–Schmitt, under the additional condition of non-2-divisibility.

We generalize Bloch’s map on torsion cycles from algebraically closed fields to arbitrary fields. While Bloch’s map over algebraically closed fields is injective for zero-cycles and for cycles of codimension at most two, we show that the generalization to arbitrary fields is only injective for cycles of codimension at most two but, in general, not for zero-cycles. Our result implies that Jannsen’s cycle class map in integral $\ell $-adic continuous étale cohomology is, in general, not injective on torsion zero-cycles over finitely generated fields. This answers a question of Scavia and Suzuki.

We give a complete classification of finite subgroups of automorphisms of K3 surfaces up to deformation. The classification is in terms of Hodge theoretic data associated to certain conjugacy classes of finite subgroups of the orthogonal group of the K3 lattice. The moduli theory of K3 surfaces, in particular the surjectivity of the period map and the strong Torelli theorem allow us to interpret this datum geometrically. Our approach is computer aided and involves Hermitian lattices over number fields.

Let $X_4\subset \mathbb {P}^{n+1}$ be a quartic hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 4$ over an infinite field k. We show that if either $X_4$ contains a linear subspace $\Lambda $ of dimension $h\geq \max \{2,\dim (\Lambda \cap \operatorname {\mathrm {Sing}}(X_4))+2\}$ or has double points along a linear subspace of dimension $h\geq 3$, a smooth k-rational point and is otherwise general, then $X_4$ is unirational over k. This improves previous results by A. Predonzan and J. Harris, B. Mazur and R. Pandharipande for quartics. We also provide a density result for the k-rational points of quartic $3$-folds with a double plane over a number field, and several unirationality results for quintic hypersurfaces over a $C_r$ field.

In this paper, we show that, with probability $1$, a random Beltrami field exhibits chaotic regions that coexist with invariant tori of complicated topologies. The motivation to consider this question, which arises in the study of stationary Euler flows in dimension 3, is V.I. Arnold’s 1965 speculation that a typical Beltrami field exhibits the same complexity as the restriction to an energy hypersurface of a generic Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. The proof hinges on the obtention of asymptotic bounds for the number of horseshoes, zeros and knotted invariant tori and periodic trajectories that a Gaussian random Beltrami field exhibits, which we obtain through a nontrivial extension of the Nazarov–Sodin theory for Gaussian random monochromatic waves and the application of different tools from the theory of dynamical systems, including Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser (KAM) theory, Melnikov analysis and hyperbolicity. Our results hold both in the case of Beltrami fields on ${\mathbb {R}}^3$ and of high-frequency Beltrami fields on the 3-torus.

We prove three results concerning the existence of Bohr sets in threefold sumsets. More precisely, letting G be a countable discrete abelian group and $\phi _1, \phi _2, \phi _3: G \to G$ be commuting endomorphisms whose images have finite indices, we show that

1. (1) If $A \subset G$ has positive upper Banach density and $\phi _1 + \phi _2 + \phi _3 = 0$, then $\phi _1(A) + \phi _2(A) + \phi _3(A)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a theorem of Bergelson and Ruzsa in $\mathbb {Z}$ and a recent result of the first author.

2. (2) For any partition $G = \bigcup _{i=1}^r A_i$, there exists an $i \in \{1, \ldots , r\}$ such that $\phi _1(A_i) + \phi _2(A_i) - \phi _2(A_i)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a result of the second and third authors from $\mathbb {Z}$ to countable abelian groups.

3. (3) If $B, C \subset G$ have positive upper Banach density and $G = \bigcup _{i=1}^r A_i$ is a partition, $B + C + A_i$ contains a Bohr set for some $i \in \{1, \ldots , r\}$. This is a strengthening of a theorem of Bergelson, Furstenberg and Weiss.

All results are quantitative in the sense that the radius and rank of the Bohr set obtained depends only on the indices $[G:\phi _j(G)]$, the upper Banach density of A (in (1)), or the number of sets in the given partition (in (2) and (3)).

Erdős [7] proved that the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) is equivalent to the existence of an uncountable family $\mathcal {F}$ of (real or complex) analytic functions, such that $\big \{ f(x) \ : \ f \in \mathcal {F} \big \}$ is countable for every x. We strengthen Erdős’ result by proving that CH is equivalent to the existence of what we call sparse analytic systems of functions. We use such systems to construct, assuming CH, an equivalence relation $\sim $ on $\mathbb {R}$ such that any ‘analytic-anonymous’ attempt to predict the map $x \mapsto [x]_\sim $ must fail almost everywhere. This provides a consistently negative answer to a question of Bajpai-Velleman [2].

Let G be a real Lie group, $\Lambda <G$ a lattice and $H\leqslant G$ a connected semisimple subgroup without compact factors and with finite center. We define the notion of H-expanding measures $\mu $ on H and, applying recent work of Eskin–Lindenstrauss, prove that $\mu $-stationary probability measures on $G/\Lambda $ are homogeneous. Transferring a construction by Benoist–Quint and drawing on ideas of Eskin–Mirzakhani–Mohammadi, we construct Lyapunov/Margulis functions to show that H-expanding random walks on $G/\Lambda $ satisfy a recurrence condition and that homogeneous subspaces are repelling. Combined with a countability result, this allows us to prove equidistribution of trajectories in $G/\Lambda $ for H-expanding random walks and to obtain orbit closure descriptions. Finally, elaborating on an idea of Simmons–Weiss, we deduce Birkhoff genericity of a class of measures with respect to some diagonal flows and extend their applications to Diophantine approximation on similarity fractals to a nonconformal and weighted setting.

To each pair consisting of a saturated fusion system over a p-group together with a compatible family of Külshammer-Puig cohomology classes, one can count weights in a hypothetical block algebra arising from these data. When the pair arises from a genuine block of a finite group algebra in characteristic p, the number of conjugacy classes of weights is supposed to be the number of simple modules in the block. We show that there is unique such pair associated with each Benson-Solomon exotic fusion system, and that the number of weights in a hypothetical Benson-Solomon block is $12$, independently of the field of definition. This is carried out in part by listing explicitly up to conjugacy all centric radical subgroups and their outer automorphism groups in these systems.
