Papilio turnus, ♀, Linn.—I received a curious example of a ♀ P. turnus, which has the outer margin greatly produced towards the apex of the primaries; the secondaries are more rounded and not so elongate as in the typical form; and the black discal bars are broader and more suffused.

During a stay at the Research Station, Canada Department of Agriculture at Kentville, Nova Scotia, from July 3 to October 16, 1959, I had the opportunity to make some observations on the natural enemies of the woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausm.), the rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea (Pass.), and the green apple aplud, Aphis pomi Deg. An inventory of these enemies was made in the Annapolis Valley in apple orchards. sprayed according to the principles of the spray schedule of Dr. A. D. Pickett. This schedule avoids spraying with fungicides and insecticides such as sulphur and phosphorus compounds, which are very harmful to the enemies of a number of pests, studied by Dr. Picktett and his staff (cf. Pickett 1959). The dipterous predators and their enemies are dealt with in this paper.

These observations, dealing with noctuid larvae, were made while the writer was associated with the Canadian Forest Insect and Disease Survey. Twenty-four species have been examined: 9 in the Hadeninae, 10 in the Cucullinae, 3 in the Amphipyrinae, and 2 in the Catocalinae. The arrangement of the subfamilies follows that of McDunnough (1938). This material is being published because many of these species have not been included in Crumb (1956) and new data are presented on the species considered by him. The descriptions were made from living and preserved larvae. Notes on biologies, unless otherwise indicated, refer to those made by the writer in Manitoba and Alberta during the years 1944-1954. The hosts are those on which larvae have been reared to adults by the Forest Insect and Disease Survey, except in a few cases where the host is cited from the literature. “Free-living larvae”, are those that feed openly. When the number of instars is not known the larvae are described as antepenultimate, penultimate, and ultimate. In measurements, H.W. refers to head width, B.L., to total larval length, and B.W., to greatest larval width.

Egg.—The egg is described by Hungerford (11) as being “elongate-oval, with a curved neck terminating in a flat surface which marks the exposed end of the egg as it lies in situ in the stem of some plant”. It is white when first laid, but within a few days it becomes watery transparent as the embryo begins to take form. The deep red eye spots and segmentation appear two days before hatching. Measurements of ten eggs of this species show the average length to be .877 mm., the greatest diameter .268 mm., and the diameter of the exposed end of the egg to be .163 mm.

Ordinarily the tribe Camponotidæ can be separated from the other tribes of ants by its habit of having cocoon pupæ in which their young go through their transformation period; whereas those of the (so-called) aculeate genera remain naked and do not spin a cocoon, it will appear, however, if diligent search be made, that several species of this tribe (Camponotidæ) do have naked pupæ, mixed with their cocooned ones, Latreille seems to have been the first to discover that Formica fusca, L., had naked and cocoon pupæ. He could not, however, understand why this should be, and indeed it remains one of the dark mysteries of the present day. So far as I am aware no other species of ants have been listed, other than Formica fusca, L., having this habit. During my researches in the study of the ants of Massachusetts, I have found that other species have acquired the same habit. And to satisfy myself that no mistake was made on my part in the determination of the larva, cocoon or imago, I sent samples of them to my friend and coworker, Mr. Ernest Andra, of France, for his opinion, and at the same time enquired of him if any of the ants of Europe had been discovered with naked and cocooned pupæ, other than F. fusca.

Length not quite 5 mm. Cephalothorax above brilliant peacock green, slightly intermixed with brassy in front; white hairs above the row of eyes forming a weak band, also narrowly encircling the eyes; an irregular patch of white hairs beneath the hindmost eyes; lateral (inferior) margins of cephalothorax with a broad, well-defined white band. Legs black with white hairs, the hairs so arranged as to divide the legs into alternate sections of black and white; the tibiæ black at base and middle, the tarsi narrowly black at base. Palpi covered with white hairs. Mandibles black. Abdomen above brilliant metallic magenta, with the base yellowish green; the sides and the under surface white, minutely speckled with black.

Two new species of Lygaeinae are described from Canada. Lygaeospilus brevipilus from British Columbia and Melanopleurus perplexus from Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. L. brevipilus is also recorded from Oregon. The record of M. perplexus in Canada represents an extension of the previously recorded range for the genus Melanopleurus. Revised keys to the species of Lygaeospilus and Melanopleurus are given.

In the course of collecting several nests of Polistes fuscatus Fabricius and P. fuscatus var. pallipes Lepeletier (Hymenoptera, Vespidae), six were found to be highly parasitised by Polistiphaga arvalis Cresson. The female Polistiphaga normally deposits from two to six eggs either on the Polistes larva or in the cell with the larva (oviposition has not heen observed).

Most conventional field cages are bulky and difficult to handle, even when they can be partially disassembled. Consequently, a cage that has little weight and is easily collapsed and rolled into a small bundle would be advantageous. This paper describes such a cage that weighs only three pounds and is easily rolled into a bundle about four inches in diameter.

This paper is a report on the discovery of distinct morphological differences between DDT-resistant and non-DDT-resistant strains of the house fly, Musca domestica L. Since DDT-resistant house flies were first reported in Italy in 1945-46, such differences have been sought by a number of workers (e.g. Wiesmann, 1947; D'Alessandro et al., 1949; March and Lewallen, 1950; Anon., 1950). Various slight differences have been detected but none of a magnitude comparable to those described in this paper has so far been reported.

Two species of the genus Lispothrips, Reuter have been recognized in Europe and it is interesting now to record two new species, making the first record of this genus in North America.

New records of the ptyctimous mites from the Nearctic Region are given. The new material includes 27 species of ptyctimous mites. The geographical distributions of seven species are more extensive than previously known.

The object of the present list is to bring together all the published records found by me to treat of, or give any reference to, Coccids known to inhabit Massachusetts up to August, 1899. Since then others have appeared and will be published when sufficient material is collected.

Cockerell, Theo. D. A., 1893.—Insect Life, Vol. VI., p. 103, he lists Pinnaspis pandani, Comst., from Mass. under glass.

In the course of studles on different species of defoliators in field-spruce stands on the Gaspé coast of the Baie des Chaleurs, Griselda radicana (Wlshm.) occurred fairly commonly in such stands. Although the principal host tree of this insect is white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, records of the Forest Insect and Disease Survey show that it has been collected from black spruce, Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP., Colorado spruce, Picea pungens Engelm., and balsam fir, Abies halramea (L.) Mill. Although G. radicana is commonly found across Canada, there are no records that it has ever reached outbreak proportions. These investigations were undertaken since nothing was known on the life history and habits of this insect. The studies were carried out near New Richmond in the Gaspé Peninsula in the summer of 1959.
