The Holarctic species of the genus Pygocryptus Roman (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) are revised. Two previously recognized species, P. grandis from Europe and P. echthroides from North America, are retained; four new species and three subspecies for P. echthroides are proposed. A diagnostic key and descriptions of the new species and subspecies are presented.

Peanuts, Arachis hypogaea L., have been grown experimentally in Ontario since 1970, with the ultimate objective of commercial production. The pests of this new Canadian crop have been surveyed and the most important one has been identified as the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris) (Ellis and Roy 1979). This pest is native to North America and disperses into Ontario from the south in early June; it attacks a number of crops including potatoes, alfalfa, beans, and peanuts. Feeding by E. fabae interferes with translocation and results in yellowing of the tips of peanut leaves, followed by necrosis, a condition called hopper bum. Reported here are experiments on the injury of this pest to peanuts in 0ntarioT

A single fly, bred from a larva on oak at Boston, Mass., appears to belong to this species. The fly differs from Mr. Cresson's description in that all the tarsi are blackish; the abdomen above is largely blackish; there is no luteous tint discernible on the laterl margin of middle lobe of mesothorax; the anterior and posterior margins of the luteous stigma are blackish and the veins are nearly black.

The erratic migrations of certain insects, often in countless swarms, have been noticed and put on record by many observers. In a country where, perhaps, they are scarce, or, it may be, almost wanting ordinarily, they may suddenly put in an appearance in such numbers as to defy all attempts at computation; or immense swarms of them may sometimes be seen far out at sea, flying steadily in a direction which may take them out so far as to effectually prevent any return.

A trial of a number of substances as repellents against the Narcissus fly (Merodon equestris) was made at Victoria, B.C., in 1933. The place selected for these trials was one where the owner had suffered severe losses from Merodon in the past, and notwithstanding this had preserved all his badly infested bulbs instead of destroying them as we advised; and further, had even planted them in a separate plot to see if they would recover. The result of this procedure was, as we predicted, a11 enormous infestation of Merodon the following summer and anticipating this we made arrangements to try out various repellents, realizing that here was an unusual opportunity.

Male. Length 6.5 mm.; of wing 4.8 mm. Face narrow immediately below antennae, thickly covered with bright golden pollen; proboscis black; palpi dark brown bearing fine black hair and lightly dusted with yellowish pollen; antennae yellow; first joint large with a black stripe along upper outer edge and covered with short, stiff black hairs, second joint small, yellow, third joint small, decumbent, black on apical half; arista black, about one and one-half times length of face, lamella (fig. 4) at tip with an elliptical white spot on upper side near base; front black with bluish reflections, especially along the orbits; ocellar bristles black, hair near proboscis whitish.

The following new genera and species of Proctotrypidæ were all collected in Canada by Mr. W. Hague Harrington, of Ottawa.

Scorrioteleia, gen. nov.

Abdomen with five visible segments; the last three segments long, slender, cylindrical, together as long as the second, and resembling the tenninal segments of a scorpion; the third segment is about as long as the fourth and fifth segments united, the fifth pointed. Front wings with the marginal vein shorter than the marginal cell, and scarcely twice as long as the first abscissa of radius, which is slightly oblique. Antennfæ 15-jointed, filiform, the first joint of flagellum the longest, about half the length of the scape, the following joints to the last very gradually shortening, the penultimate joint being about twice as long as thick, the last joint oblong-oval, one-half longer than the preceding.

This tribes includes a number of species which are, as a rule, easily distinguished by the peculiar appearance given by their soft integuments and usually somewhat elongate form. A number of them are pubescent, while others, on account of the peculiar sculpture of the surface, are quite opaque, the effect on the eye being, at first glance, the same in each case. The elytra in our species are longer than the abdomen, the prothorax is margined, the antennæ approximate, inserted on the front, the hind legs with rather slender thighs, not fitted for leaping. It will be remembered in this connection that I consider the Halticini as a distinct tribe.

Mature larvae and puparia of Canace macateei Malloch inhabiting mats of blue-green algae in a Massachusetts intertidal marsh are described and compared with other larvae of the Canaceidae.

On the evening of Saturday, May 22nd, 1886, being the first warm evening after the electric light system was started in London, hundreds of “electric light bugs” (Camptobrochis grandis) and large green Calosomas (Calasoma scrutator) came into the city, and form that time on throughout the summer, and even as late as Nov. 2nd, the lights continued to attract hundreds of insects every warm evening.

The confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum J. du Val, is a cosmopolitan pest of stored products and is widely distributed in Canada, primarily in flour and feed mills. This insect prefers some grain products or cultivars to others (Loschiavo 1952) and seems to be attracted mainly by an olfactory response to certain fatty acids (Loschiavo 1965) and triglycerides (Starratt and Loschiavo 1972; Tamaki et al. 1971). Differential effects of diets on the rate of development of T. confusum are directly related to temperature, being greatest near the optimal temperature for development (Lamb and Loschiavo 1981). Crowding also affects development and size (Park 1938).

The following are descriptions of a new species of the subfamily Typhlocybinae from northern Canada, and one new species of the subfamily Deltocephalinae from Eastern Canada and a second from the Prairie Provinces. The type material is in the Canadian National Collection, Ottawa.

A comprehensive biovigilance programme was undertaken in 2018 to monitor potential insect vectors of viruses of grapevines (Vitis vinifera; Vitaceae) in two vineyards in Québec. Two hundred seventy-four insects were collected using yellow sticky traps and sweeping nets. Collected specimens were first classified into orders, with special attention given to the Hemiptera order, which is the main group of virus vectors. Hemipteran pests were identified to species. Among these specimens, one adult of Rossmoneura tecta McAtee (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) was identified, the first report of this species in Canada. Empoasca vincula DeLong, Erythroneura acuticephala Robinson, and Erythroneura cymbium McAtee, three other species belonging to the same family and previously reported in other Canadian provinces, were also identified for the first time in Québec. Further investigations are being undertaken to test the ability of these species to transmit grapevine viruses.

The fulgorids of the genus Laccocera Van Duzee were revised by Penner (1945. J. Kansas Ent. Soc. 18: 30-46), who described and figured the seven species known to occur in North America. In all, five species are represented in the Canadian National Collection. One of these is previously undescribed, and three others have not been recorded from Canada previously. The following are a description of the new species and records of other Canadian species from specimens in the Collection.

Orthezia cheilanthi, n. sp.—Adult ♀ Length, 3.5 mm. Width, 3-3.5 mm. Length + ovisac, 6-8 mm. Width of Ovisac 3-4 mm. Body above covered with whtie secretion, which forms lateral and sub. dorsal longitudinal keels. A well-defined subdorsal furrow between the keels and the lateral margin formed by 3 or more rows of paltes; these are smaller than the projecting marginal plates, which are flattened; caudal plate and the 3 or 4 plates on each side of it very little longer than the lateral plates. The structure of the secretion is compact; in most of the other species of Orthezia it is fluffy.
