A gynandromorph of Rachispoda subpiligera (Malloch) is described. The specimen exhibits both bilateral and anterior/posterior division of male and female genitalic components. Abdominal segment 5 is male, segments 6 and 7 are bilaterally divided into male (right) and female (left) halves, and segments 8–11 are female. Comparison of male and female components supports the view that the large, asymmetrical sclerite posterior to sternite 5 in male Sphaeroceridae is synsternite 6 + 7. Circumversion of the genitalia, normally seen in male segments 8–11, is absent, although male components of segments 6 and 7 exhibit asymmetry normally associated with circumversion. This suggests that asymmetry of sternites 6 and 7 is a developmental process independent of circumversion, not a direct consequence of circumversion.

Our President has asked me what methods I adopted for the raising of C. jutta from the egg. I will endeavour of describe them.

As it is well known the larvæ of the genus Chionobas feed on grasses, my first care was to determine what grasses were to be found in the haunts of Jutta, and to notice the circumstances under which they grew. I found several, all rooted in the sphagnum of the swamp. I took home roots of ever kind, and potted them in sphagnum, being careful to close the hole in the bottom of each flower pot with a cork, and to soak the plants throughly with rain water.

The following new taxa are described: Aurorobotys n. gen., type-species Ebulea aurorina Butler, Japan; A. crassispinalis n. sp., Chekiang Province, China; Tenerobotys n. gen., type-species Hapalia teneralis Caradja; T. t. tsinlingalis n. subsp., Shensi Province, China; T. subfumalis subfumalis n. sp. and subsp., Taiwan; T. s. continentalis n. subsp., Hunan Province, China; Carminibotys n. gen., type-species Pyrausta carminalis Caradja; C. c. iwawakisana n. subsp., Honshu, Japan.

Thrips have frequently been abundant in flowers and less abundant upon other parts of plants in most sections of Utah. Considerable thrips damage to onions occurs practically every year in most onion-growing areas of this state, while beans, beets, and other crop plants are less generally affected. It appears that damage, due to thrips, is more general in Utah than has usually been supposed. A desire to become better acquainted with the forms occurring upon various plant species in this region has led to this study.

Now that we have been supplied by Mr. Uhler with a list of the Hemiptera Heteroptera of North America, which has been much needed, it will be interesting to know more about the geographical distribution of the species. The following list is short, but will nevertheless add to our knowledge of these insects. The species were collected at the same time and in the same localities with the Coleoptera given in my list (Can. Entom., xvii., p. 66–73), and the preliminary notes there given apply also here. The species were kindly determined for me by Mr' Uhler.

Descriptions of Procloeon rubropictum (McD.), P. quaesitum (McD.), and P. rufostrigatum (McD.) are expanded to include features not previously published. A description of the nymph of P. quaesitum is given for the first time. Procloeon irrubrum sp.nov. is described from nymphs and female imagoes. From our interpretation of preliminary data, it is possible that P. rufostrigatum and P. rubropictum form one species group; P. quaesitum is included with P. pennulatum (Eaton) in another. Procloeon irrubrum does not fit either species group but shows some affinities to the P. rufostrigatum group. Some characters for separating the nymphs of Procloeon and Centroptilum are given.

Midilambia n. gen. is described for Cacographis colombiana Schaus. A lectotype is designated for the species, which is transferred from Midilinae to Nymphulinae.

The Pediculoididae are so strongly sexually dimorphic that there is little resemblance between the sexes, necessitating two sets of keys. As I am particularly interested in the females, they only are here discussed.

In Pediculoides the abdomen tapers posteriad to a blunt point, in all the other genotypes the abdomen is more or less truncate and angular behind. Pygmephorus (often misspelled) has tarsi I swollen and much longer than tibiae I. In Pediculopsis they are subequal. Resinacarus also has large tarsi I. In figure 12 the line around the middle of tarsi I is to be taken as a constriction rather than a segmental boundary. The bristles of legs I are not identical in figures 9 and 12, nor are the bristles of dorsal plates I and III. Resinacarus has three pairs of prothoracic bristles while the type of Pygmephorus has two pairs.

The genus Pseudohazis, Gr.& R., has only two typical representatives so far known, one being Eglanterina, Bd., with the purple colouring, and the other the white Hera, Harr., from Utah's salt regions. Hera has to be considered a distinct species, for, aside from its white colour, its primaries are falcated, while those of Eglanterina are broad and blunt. All the rest of named insects are variations of Eglanterina,“Pica, Walk., being especially recognizable by its heavy black markings and black basal areas.

The depressed flour beetle, Palorus subdepressus (Wollaston), was found in southern Manitoba during a survey of the insect fauna of hog barns in April 1974. This is the first record for this species in Canada. Adults and larvae were obtained from residues of coarsely ground feed on the floor of the hog pens. Dr. E. C. Becker of the Biosystematics Research Institute, Ottawa, kindly confirmed the identification of the adults and two specimens were retained for the Canadian National Collection. A culture has been established at the Research Station, Winnipeg.

Dasyllis cinerea, sp. nov.—Black, shining, with slight bluish reflection; head thorax, tip of abdomen, and legs with cinereous hair and pile. Length, 12–15 mm.

♂ ♀. —Head black, fae cinereous pollinose, mystax and vibrissæ long, composed of moderately-dense cinereous hair, with the exception of a few black ones for the most part confined to the orla margin, but sometimes extending up on the facial gibbosity; ocellular tubercle prominent with black hair; occipito-orbital hairs fine, black and gray, the letter predominating; beard dense, silky, of same gray colour; palpi small, black-haired; antennæ black, first two segments with black and gray hairs.

Two species of the genus Lispothrips, Reuter have been recognized in Europe and it is interesting now to record two new species, making the first record of this genus in North America.

These preliminary investigations of effects of radiation on black flies were undertaken to develop methods of control based on the "sterile-male" technique. Mature black fly larvae were irradiated at various exposures (from 2 kR to 32 kR) and allowed to complete development in aerated stream water in the laboratory. The larvae were preponderantly Simulium venustum Say, determined by inspection of pupae and adults. It was found that percentage pupation following irradiation remained at a fairly constant level (about 93%), whereas emergence from pupae fell from 54% at 2 kR to 0% at 28 kR. Though variable, the percentage emergence of the controls averaged 47%. Adults inspected for radiation damage appeared unchanged at the lower doses, e.g. 2 kR to 6 kR, compared with controls. At higher doses (e.g. 16 kR) the abdominal cavities usually showed a notable decrease in stored fat bodies. The anterior two-thirds of the abdomens were largely devoid of internal organs, many of which, including the ovaries and testes, were found in a degenerate condition at the posterior tip.
