The life history and the later larval instars of Tetrastichus garryana Burks (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are described and figured. The parasite has been collected from several species of oak gall cynipids, to which general group it seems to be restricted. In British Columbia it is most commonly associated with the gall-wasp Besbicus mirabilis (Kinsey).

Glyphina longiseta, a new alder-infesting aphid, is described from Nova Scotia and its affinities noted.

20. Schistocerca americana, Drury.

This large and beautiful locust has been twice reported from Ontario, at London, (Can. Ent., XXVII., p. 52), and at Toronto(Can. Ent., XXIX., p. 89), a single example being taken in each instance. These were probably wanderers from the South, certainly in the case of the Toronto specimen, and the insect can hardly be regarded as a native of our Province, though it may be established in the extreme southern portion.

In working up considerable material which the writer collected in the western United States certain new species of Hadronema have been recognized, with the result that a key is provided for the thirteen known species of which five are described as new. In 1918, Mr. E. H. Gibson published a key (Can. Ent., xl, pp. 81-84) to the species known to him, describing two new species. The writer examined these types in the U. S. National Museum during 1926 and found that Hadronema confraterna Gib. is in fact a good species of Lopidea, allied to Lopidea lepidii Kngt., but smaller and the left clasper somewhat differently shaped.

During the summer of 1948, the Royal Ontario Museum of Zoology and Palaeontology sent an expedition to the region of Cape Henrietta Maria on the north-west corner of James Bay, Ontario. Among the insects collected were specimens of two new species of Coccinellidae. Descriptions of these are given here.

A new penicillate diplopod, Polyxenus koreanus sp. nov., is described from Korea. This is the first record of penicillate diplopods in Korea.

In 1957 James R. Beer, Edwin F. Cook and Robert G. Schwab, of the University of Minnesota, conducted an investigation of mammals and their ectoparasites in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona. The area studied included varied habitats in the general vicinity of the Southwestern Research Station of the American Museum of Natural History at Portal. An account of this investigation has now been published (Beer et al., 1959).

Recently while studying a small collection of Histeridae and Melyridae submitted to me by Mr. Ralph Hopping of the Canadian Entomological Branch, I discovered the interesting new species described below. With Col. Casey's excellent paper on the Melyridae (Coleopterological Notices VI, p. 456) at hand it becomes an easy matter to gain an understanding of the several genera. The species of this family are abundant, as proved by the many new forms which are constantly coming to hand. Two of the new species represent new genera. In studying the melyrids a moderately strong glass, or preferably a binocular microscope, should be used. It really requires much intensive study to fully appreciate and properly correlate the slight but valid characters presented by the members of this moderately large and homogeneous family.

Pleotrichophorus amsinckii described herein is a pale green, weakly pulverulent aphid that was found on a fiddleneck, Amsinckia intermedia Fisch. & Mey., in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia.

The taxonomic status of Rhabdophaga sp. cannot be determined until a complete revision of the genus occurs. Rhabdophaga sp. on Salix discolor Mühl. is univoltine in Michigan. Adults emerge in mid-April, and shortly afterward deposit numerous eggs on the setaceous undersurface of emerging willow leaves; larval eclosion occurs between 1 and 2 weeks later. Head capsule measurements reveal three larval instars. The first-instar larva bores into the stem until it reaches the pith. Gall development begins about mid-June shortly after the second instar appears. The third-instar larva overwinters in the gall and the pupa appears in early April. The prolate gall is found on the proximal ends of young willow shoots; heavily galled shoots usually die.

In the potato storage cellar of the Fredericton laboratory, aphids were collected on March 1, 1954, from chrysanthemum cuttings that had been placed in the cellar during the autumn of 1953. The aphids were so numerous that they were causing severe injury to the plants. The writer identified the specimens as of Myzus ascalonicus Doncaster. This identification was verified by Mr. J. P. Doncaster, British Museum of Natural History.

I am obliged to Dr. A. C. Baker for the information that Heteroneura, recently described by the writer in Canadian Entomologist, (1919, page 228) as a new genus to include Aphis setariæ Thos., is preoccupied. I am, therefore, proposing a new name, namely, Hysteroneura, as a substitute for Heteroneura.

The species of Lepyrus in North America have not heretofore been well understood. The genus has recently been treated monographically by an American writer, several forms being described for the first time: one of these has since been discovered to be identical with the European capucinus, Schall, and geminatus, Say, to be palustris, Scop.

Male blackish; head with frontal vitta opaque black, faintly tinged with red at base of antennae; parafacials and cheeks grayish pruinescent with reddish to black reflections; antennae and palpi black; arista paler on distal portion. Thorax and abdomen subshining with dark reflections, the former lightly brownish pollinose, viewed from behind with three faint, narrow vittae; the latter more densely pollinose, each tergum with a broad black subtriangular mark, hypopygium shining. Legs blackish. Wings tinged, more intensively basad, but not blackened; veins dark brown. Calyptrae tinged, halteres yellow.
