During the summer of 1879, while working with Professor Comstock upon the natural enemies of the cotton worm, I came across the following passage in his fleld notes of the previous year :—

“August 27.–I found yesterday a cotton worm about five-eighths of an inch in length, which, though yet alive, was being destroyed by three green larvæ which were upon it. I found the specimens abont 10 a. m. Last evening I observed that the cotton worm was nearly eaten. The parasites had very short bodies, which, when they moved, were pointed at one end. I had intended to describe the specimens, but I find that they have spun cocoons about their bodies.

Although DDT gives excellent control of the striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittata (F.), the most serious insect pest of cucumbers in Canada, the technical grade of DDT is generally considered too toxic to cucumbers to he used on that crop with safety. Recently, two related materials that are said to be less toxic to cucurbits in general have been on the market: high-setting-point DDT, and methoxychlor. Carruth and Howe (1948) showed that DDT approaching aerosol grade in setting-point was less injurious to squashes than DDT of technical grade. Several entomologists have reported that cucumbers, like melons and squashes, show definite varietal responses to DDT. Hervey and Schroeder (1946) found the variety Ohio 31 to be more severely injured by DDT than China or Chicago Pickling. Wilson and Sleesman (1947) reported that plants of Ohio 31 were stunted much more by DDT than those of National. This paper is a report on three seasons' investigations of the toxicity of three per cent technical-grade DDT dust to 12 varieties of cucumbers, and one season's investigations of the toxicity of three per cent high-setting-point DDT and methoxychlor dusts to the same 12 varieties.

Aleurodes mori, n. sp.

Egg.—Length, .16 mm.; width, 08 mm.; elliptical, curved, light brownish in colour, marked with minute polygonal areas; pedicel short, about one-tenth length of egg.

Larva.—Length, .43 mm.; width, .3 mm., varying somewhat; shape, elliptical; colour, whitish or yellowish white. Margin all around dentate, due to the usually short but acute incisions between the closely-set wax tubes. A very fragmentary marginal fringe frequently present; no submarginal rim as in pupacase.

Mr. Ernest André's conception of this subfamily is erroneousl he has placed in it a number of genera that do not belong to the family Thynnidæat all, but are genuine Myrmosids, and represent my tribe Chyphotini. Moreover André has incorrectly classifed all of these genera in the family Mutillidæ an error Fox and myself also fell into years ago, before we had studied the Thynnidæ.

During the winter of 1931-32, iny attention was drawn to the swarms of long-legged flies in a root-house attached to the barn on my father's farm at Salmon Arm, B.C. The root-house is built above ground, with sawdust insulation between the double walls, and has three ventilation shafts through the ceiling, and one at ground level; the floor is of earth, on which planks are put down as required. At the timle in question it contained a bin each of mangels and potatoes, about 200 boxes of unpacked apples, and sundry cabbages and carrots.

Breeding at Go Home Bay confirmed what had already been suspected from our collections and breedings in the Ottawa and Knowlton regions, viz , that the nymph and female imago referred to by Clemens under the name flavescens belong to the species, ruber McD. Nymphs were secured at the Flat Rock Falls, the identical locality where they had been collected by Clemens, and two males, three females bred through to the adult stage (June 19, 21, July 2). The abdominal tergites of the nymph are not always as immaculately brown as indicated by Clemens ; there are frequently traces of pale dashes laterally and subdorsally along the anterior margins of the segments, serving to a certain extent to define the usual median and submedian dark bands and submedian dots.

Among some Arizona and Texas material received through Mr. S. Cassino I have found a species of Parapheromia which appears to be new and which I describe as follows :—

Parapheromia cassinoi n. sp.

Male. Antennae claviform; head and thorax an admixture of black and light gray scaling; primaries light brown, heavily obscured with black scaling the ground-color only showing plainly along the outer margin and in the median area in the region of the discal spot; lines black, the basal one double and strongly excurved, the median one arising from a small black costal patch and subparallel to basal line, outer one irregularly outcurved below costa, then inwardly oblique and rather rigid to a point helow the inception of vein two, where it bends and runs perpendicular to inner margin; this line distinctly geminate in its lower region and followed above inner margin by an irregular white patch; s. t. line white, irregularly dentate and preceded by a blackish shade; a slight black dash below apex and faint black terminal line; fringes pale smoky.

Œdematophorus lugubris, n. s.

Front of head and palpi very dark fuliginous, the vertex slightly lighter. Form of palpi as in O. Baroni. Antennæ dotted above with white and blackish scales, tawny brown beneath. Thorax color of vertex. Abdomen slender, with scales slightly raised at extremities of joints, dark fuliginous brown, rather copiously sprinkled with black scales.

æ.–Sanguineous, shining; head, antennæ, prothorax, surroundings of scutellum, pleura beneath, four anterior legs, including their coxæ, posterior trochanters and their tibiæ and tarsi, black; sides of mesothorax tinged with blackish; metathorax coarsely punctured above with four longitudinal carinæ, the two central ones approximate, flanks less coarsely punctured; wings uniformly fuliginous, with the usual hyaline angular streak beneath stigma; abdomen long, narrow, polished, with a purplish reflection; ovipositor longer than body. Length ·37 inch.

During the past winter an installation of about 100 arc-lamps was established at Akron, O. They haug as usual over the middle of the street. Early in the summer it was evident that they would afford a fine huntinggorund for the entomologist, and accordingly several members of the Natural History society of Akron resolved to turn the opportunity to account by making collections of the insects attracted by the light and compariirg and noting the results.

Aeschna verticalis Hagen has been for some years the only species of the genus from eastern North America, whose nymph was unknown, except the rare A. mutata Hagen. At last, unexpectedly, the writer found A. verticalis in transformation at Clementsport, Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia.

The North American species of Brachylomia Hampson, 1906 are revised and four new species (B. cascadiasp. nov., B. obscurifasciasp. nov., B. pallidasp. nov., and B. sierrasp. nov.) are described. The monotypic genus Lomilysis Franclemont, 1937 is synonymized with Brachylomia. Epunda onychina Guenée, 1852, which is currently placed in Brachylomia, is reclassified as a senior synonym of Egira alternans (Walker, [1857]), but Epunda onychina, not being associated with any known species in more than 150 years, is treated as a nomen oblitum, so Egira alternans is a nomen protectum under provisions of Article 23.9.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Adults and genitalia of Nearctic species of Brachylomia are figured.

Black above, yellowish brown beneath. The antennæ are black, the front, mouth parts and legs yellowish brown. Rarely the femora and tarsi are dusky, and the ventral surface quite dark. Very rarely the dorsal surface is brownish, except the pedicel and tip. The occiput or collar is brown. The antennæ are sixteen-jointed in the female, and seventeen in the male, and are cylindrical, recurved, and thickly set with short, light colored hairs. The first two joints are shorter and larger that the others; the succeeding joints are cylindrical, close together, and equal in length, except the last, which is longer and conical.

Glyphina longiseta, a new alder-infesting aphid, is described from Nova Scotia and its affinities noted.

Philonthus quediinus Horn. A male specimen of this fine species was taken here As the anterior marginal puncture of the thorax is placed so unusually far behind the margin, and on a line with the three discal ones, the discal punctures are apparently four. In this speciment the singular bunch of bristles on the penultimagte ventral segment consists of about six, all differing in length, and rising from a small median pit resembling somewhat that seen in the male of some species of Dermestes.

Two new species of aphids are described: apterous and alate viviparous females and oviparae of Macrosiphum hamiltoni new species, on Humulus lupulus L. in Manitoba; and apterous viviparous females and oviparae of Kakimia canadensis new species on Lonicera involucrata (Richards.) Banks in British Columbia and Idaho.

Œdipoda obliterata, nov. sp.

Male and female. Length to tip of elytra 1.50, to tip of abdomen 1.10 to 1.30. Pale reddish-brown or dull yellowish tinged with rufous, with irregular transverse bands of dark fuscous spots.

Occiput not prominent. Vertex broad, moderately deflexed, margins with sharp carinæ forming a distinct sub-quadrate, median foveola, which is divided into two equal sections by a distinct longitudinal, median carina that extends back part way upon the occiput; sides of the foveola parallel between the eyes, and bending abruptly inward toward the fastigium in front, continuous with the sides of the frontal costa; fastigium with a double indentation.

Investigations have shown that several types of reproduction commonly occur in the Coccoidea. Some soecies reproduce in the usual sexual manner. some parhenogenetically, some by either of these two methods depending upon whether or not fertilization takis place; others reproduce hermaphroditically. The type of reproduction is not confined to any particular group but is found throughout the superfamily.
