Papilio turnus, ♀, Linn.—I received a curious example of a ♀ P. turnus, which has the outer margin greatly produced towards the apex of the primaries; the secondaries are more rounded and not so elongate as in the typical form; and the black discal bars are broader and more suffused.

From our insect faunal surveys of the maritime provinces of Canada, we have accumulated a long series of a species of Eubaphe which inhabits the cold sphagnum bogs, and being quite unlike any so far described, I propose for it the name:

Eubaphe lamae n. sp.

Male. Antennae black, light above. Palpi, head, thorax and fore wings dark brown with a slight orange tinge more noticeable along the costa; usually a well defined subcircular white spot just below the origin of Cu2; an obscure black spot at the upper end of the cell, beyond which is a faintly orange area.

On the evening of Saturday, May 22nd, 1886, being the first warm evening after the electric light system was started in London, hundreds of “electric light bugs” (Camptobrochis grandis) and large green Calosomas (Calasoma scrutator) came into the city, and form that time on throughout the summer, and even as late as Nov. 2nd, the lights continued to attract hundreds of insects every warm evening.

Ten galls and pseudogalls caused by poplar gall aphids are described, their development discussed, and a key to their identification presented. Nine of these malformations are from Quebec poplars and one from Crystal Springs on Pigeon Lake, Alberta. All of the aphids involved belong to the family Eriosomatidae and sub-family Pemphiginae. Seven species are members of the genus Pemphigus Hartig, and of these P. bursarius (L.) and P. populitransversus Riley are well recognized economic vegetable pests in the United States. A monoecious species P. spirothecae Passerini is reported for the first time in North America. P. monophagus Maxson was collected from balsam poplars in Alberta. Other genera represented are Thecabius Koch (two species) and Asiphum Koch (one species).

The fir coneworm, Dioryctria abietivorella (Grote), is a major insect pest in seed orchards across Canada and the adjoining eastern and western United States. Larvae feed principally on cones, but they can also feed on needles and occasionally on the bark of young tree trunks (Hedlin et al. 1980; Ruth 1980; Martineau 1985). The potential for a population of D. abietivorella to build up in seed orchards may be greater than in natural stands (Hedlin et al. 1980; Ruth et al. 1982). The use of entomopathogen in the management of fir coneworm could be an adequate measure to reduce the impact of this insect. Moreover, Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki has a specific effect on Lepidoptera (Aronson et al. 1986; Gill et al. 1992). The purpose of our study was to determine the activity of the HD-1 strain of B. thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki (serotype H-3a:3b) to larvae D. abietivorella. Bioassays were conducted with first-, third-, and fifth-instar larvae of fir coneworm to determine whether or not the insect's vulnerability to B. thuringiensis varies with larval age.

The following are descriptions of a new species of the subfamily Typhlocybinae from northern Canada, and one new species of the subfamily Deltocephalinae from Eastern Canada and a second from the Prairie Provinces. The type material is in the Canadian National Collection, Ottawa.

During a stay at the Research Station, Canada Department of Agriculture at Kentville, Nova Scotia, from July 3 to October 16, 1959, I had the opportunity to make some observations on the natural enemies of the woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausm.), the rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea (Pass.), and the green apple aplud, Aphis pomi Deg. An inventory of these enemies was made in the Annapolis Valley in apple orchards. sprayed according to the principles of the spray schedule of Dr. A. D. Pickett. This schedule avoids spraying with fungicides and insecticides such as sulphur and phosphorus compounds, which are very harmful to the enemies of a number of pests, studied by Dr. Picktett and his staff (cf. Pickett 1959). The dipterous predators and their enemies are dealt with in this paper.

It is our desire in the present article to call attention to two pretty well established laws of nomenclature, that with a few seconding words on our part, the laws may, “to those whom it may concern,” preach the importance and necessity of their being observed and obeyed.

Mortality factors affecting populations of the leafminers Argyresthia thuiella (Pack.) and Pulicalvaria thujaella (Kft.), on eastern white cedar in the area of Guelph, Ontario were identified and summarized in life tables. During the two annual generations studied from 1975 to 1977, overwintering mortality varied widely. Winterkill increased from 6.8% to 62.9% for A. thuiella and from 8.1% to 54.6% for P. thujaella, from 1976 to 1977. Several parasitoids produced substantial mortality of each host species, but their effect may have been superseded by winterkill in 1977. Data indicate that both populations of leafminers increased from 1975 to 1976 but decreased substantially from 1976 to 1977.

This exhibit represents some portions of a study of the stomodaeal nervous system, neurosecretory cells, corpora allata, corpora cardiaca, and prothoracic gland cells in post-embryonic stages of Aedes aegypti (L.), the yellow fever mosquito. Some of these structures share the common property of being involved in the production of hormones.

Mosquitoes were reared under standard conditions. Larvae, pupae and adults were fixed at timed intervals in histological fixatives. Sectioned specimens were stained in Gomori's aldehyde-fuchsin, Gomori's chrome-haematoxyh-phloxin and other stains. The aldehyde-fuchsin technique, which imparted a bright purple colour to neurosecretory material, was particularly useful. Vita1 staining with methylene blue was used to trace the stomodaeal nervous system

The object of the present list is to bring together all the published records found by me to treat of, or give any reference to, Coccids known to inhabit Massachusetts up to August, 1899. Since then others have appeared and will be published when sufficient material is collected.

Cockerell, Theo. D. A., 1893.—Insect Life, Vol. VI., p. 103, he lists Pinnaspis pandani, Comst., from Mass. under glass.

In the course of identifyin a series of Diptera received by Dr. L.O. Howard, and collected in Mexico and New Mexico by Mr. C. H. T. Townsend, a number of new forms were encountered, and as manuscript names of these will soon be sent out it is desirable that these forms should be duly characterized; accordingly, the descriptions are presented for publication herewith.

R. arefactus, n. sp.

The galls are dense, corky enlargements of small shoots, usually close to the stem from which the shoot arises, and the shoot is usually dead beyond the gall when the latter is mature. The galls are irregular in shape, vary from one-half to seven-eights of an inch in diameter, and are polythalamous.

(7) Chionapsis furfurus, Fitch; 1856-1869. N.

A very common species in Massachusetts, recorded from Amherst, Worcester, Andover, Lawrence, and Methuen, on wild redcherry, pear, wild and cultivated apple, flowering quince, chokeberry, shad-bush, and black alder. It is known from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, New York, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Georgia, Utah, Kansas, New Jersey, and Washington, D. C., on choke-cherry, wild red cherry, wild and cultivated apple, crab apple, pear, peach, Japan quince, cherry currant, red flowering currant, and European mountain ash.

The pine tortoise scale, Toumeyella numismaticum (Pettit and McDaniel), was epidemic on jack pine in Marinette, Oconto and Florence counties in northern Wisconsin during 1953 and 1954. In the spring of 1954, 2900 acres of jack pine plantation in Marinette County were heavily infested. Four hundred seventy-four acres had been killed during 1953 by the scale. Some of the timber had been expected to reach marketable pulp log size within the next four to five years. The infested plantations showed the same symptoms as those which died in 1953 had shown during that year.
