Helophorus arcticus Brown was described (1937, Can. Ent., LXIX, 109) from a single specimen taken by the describer in August, 1935, at Lake Harbour, Baffin Island, which is situated on the north shore of Hudson Strait at latitude 62° 50', longitude 69° 52'. The specimen was found beneath an old caribou horn resting on moss a few feet from the seashore.

The species of Adranes are to be looked for in nests of ants belonging to the genrs Lasius. They are helpless creatures, lacking eyes and with much reduced mouth-parts, dependent probably upon the ants for their supply of food. They are carefully attended by their hosts, to whom they give requital in the form of a secretion, much appreciated by the ants, which collects on certain patches of hair situated on the tips of the elytra and on the base of the abdominal dorsum. The antennæ are much modified, consisting of only two joints, the second of which is very large and heavy, varying in form in different species.

In the three types to be considered in this place, then the conspicuous portion of the perianth is almost always campanualte or more generally widely patent and sometimes reflexed. The anothers are regularly elongate in form, linear or subulate, and basifixed on filaments of greater or lesser length. The pistil is usually simple, with filiform style and punctiform stigma, but to this there are rare exceptions. The Dilleniaceous type is distinguished by its numerous, generally free, stamens with long or short filaments, and sometimes several pistils free almost to the base.

Larvae, long, 1.07 to 1.10 inch. Head rather large, smooth, vertical; occiput dark chestnut brown; medial line abbreviated, but well defined; lateral lines complete; vertex piceous, sculptured; front rufo-piceous ; mandibles obtuse, opaque, with three large deep impressed punctures; labium 3-dentate; mentum sinuated, sub-flavous. Body sub-cylindrical, not curved, sub-flavous, middle segments largest, humeral and anal segments corneous, brownish; legs replaced by six tubercles.

The genus Corethra was founded by Meigen in 1803,* on Tipula culiciformis, De Geer, and in April, 1844, Leow erected the genus Mochlonyx† on Corethra velutina, Ruthe, basing it on the shortened first joint of the tarsi, a character mentioned by Ruthe in his original description. The characters of the tarsi of culiciformis cannot be ascertained from De Geer's description and figures.‡ On page 386 of the same volume of his Memories, which contains the account of this species, is a description and brief account of a related species, which he named Tipula crystallina, with a reference to Reaumur's Memories, V., plate 6, figures 4–15, where at 4 and 7, a more slender larva without a trace of a subanal respiratory tube in shown, contrasting with the broader larva furnished with a large respiratory tube, as represented in De Geer's figures of culiciformis,; the descriptions and figures which these authors give crystallina do not indicate the characters of the tarsal joints of the adult.

This is a report on observations made in the field and in the laboratory in 1954 and 1955 at Fredericton, New Brunswick, on the responses to light and influences of light and temperature on the locomotory activities of introduced insect predators and the motile first-instar larva, or crawler, of the balsam woolly aphid, Adelges piceae (Ratz.). Adults and larvae of the predators were observed in the field and tests were conducted with adults in the laboratory. The species studied were Aphidecta obliterata (L.) and Pullus impexus (Muls.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Cremifania nigrocellulata Cz. and Neoleucopis obscura (Hal.) (Diptera: Chamaemyiidae) , and Laricobius erichsonii Rosenh. (Coleoptera: Derodontidae). The work is part of an investigation on factors influencing the searching abilities of the predators.

A key stage in the development of an insect epizootic, either natural or induced, is the transmission of a pathogen from an infected to an uninfected host (Andreadis 1987). The establishment of secondary infections can augment long-term control by increasing the amount of inoculum present within the environment (Thomas et al. 1995). The ease of disease transmission from an infected to a healthy host is an important consideration in evaluating the potential of an entomopathogen as a microbial control agent. Currently, we are field-testing the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Moniliaceae), for the suppression of adult western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, which is a key pest of corn, Zea mays L. (Gramineae), throughout the north-central United States and eastern Canada (Mulock and Chandler 2000). During our investigations we have often observed sporulating cadavers on corn plants, particularly within the leaf collars, following fungal application. In this study, we estimated the effect of the density of infected cadavers and the length of exposure time on disease transmission in adult western corn rootworm.

Raphia frater,var. coloradenis, Put.-Cr.

Mature larva.— Head rounded, partly retracted under joint 2, waxy greenish-white, ocelli black; mouth white. Body of nearly uniform width, joint 13 smaller; segmental incisures deep. Colour translucent, clear green, with many yellow piliferous dots, on joints 3 and 4 the dorsal ones tipped with red, and a central pair of these are prolonged into short, contiguous processes. On joints 5, 9 and 12 each, a transverse, curved, yellow band, reaching to the first dot above the spiracle.

Both sexes of a new species of Psococerastis, a new species of Trichadenotecnum, a new species of Stenopsocus, and single sexes of a second new Trichadenotecnum, a new species of Pseudocaecilius, a new species of Ectopsocus, a new species of Dasypsocus, and two new species of Caecilius are described from material collected in Nepal. Augmented descriptions of Psococerastis nirvanus (Banks) and of P. taprobanes var. bengalensis (Kolbe) are given, and a description of the female of Scytopsocopsis hirtipenna Lee and Thornton. A total of 14 species were identified.

Morphology, distribution, and habitat data are presented for three species of the oribatid mite genus Gymnodampia Jacot occurring in North America. A revised generic diagnosis is given and the type species Gymnodampia setata (Berlese) is redescribed based on topotypic material from Missouri. Immatures of G. setata are described and aspects of their biology are presented. Two new species from North America, G. jacotisp. nov. and G. lindquistisp. nov., are proposed and described on the basis of adults, and a key is given for North American species of Gymnodampia. The ameroid genera Cristamerus Hammer, from Pakistan and China, and Defectamerus Aoki, from Japan, Korea, and China, are considered junior synonyms of Gymnodampia, and G. conformis (Fujikawa) is considered a junior synonym of G. fusca (Fujikawa). Immatures of G. setata are apheredermous, but with a circular line of dehiscence, whereas known immatures of the superfamily Ameroidea are eupheredermous. Nonetheless, without convincing apomorphic traits linking Gymnodampia to any known apheredermous family of Brachypylina, we hypothesize that Gymnodampia has lost the eupheredermy characteristic of Ameroidea, and we place it in the family Ameridae on the basis of adult similarities.

Agrypon flaveolatum (Gravenhorst), introduced from Europe to control the winter moth, Operophtera brumata (L.), on apple and oak in Nova Scotia and British Columbia, was distinguished from the closely related native species, A. provancheri (Dalla Torre) and A. alaskensis (Ashmead). A detailed study of the three species revealed that they could be distinguished by specific morphological characters and by results of morphometric analyses of intra- and inter-specific variation of number of annuli of the antennal flagellum. The history of introductions of both the host and parasite is reviewed, including an account of host–parasite interactions. All of the characters defining species entities were found to be correlated with differences in host insect, host plant, and distribution.

Many minor malformations of wings, elytra, etc., have been observed in examining insects, but recently I have met with two monstrosities which seem worthy of record. The first insect is a ♀ Fœnus tarsitorius Say., given to me by my friend, Mr. Guignard, and captured by him on 24th June, 1885. In this speciment the left posterior tibia becomes trifid about one-fourth of its length from the base, the side branches diverging at an angle of about 30°.

Recently I received for identification a series of an Olethreutes species from Mr. K. Bowman of Edmonton, Alta., which I was inclined to place as small nordeggana McD. Mr. Bowman, however, called my attention to the fact that whereas at Nordegg, with a greater altitude than Edmonton, nordeggana is taken about the middle of July; the present species does not occur around Edmonton until early August.

The following paper deals with six apparently undescribed species of Hercostomus collected from localities in the western United States and Canada.

Hercostomus chaetilamellus n. sp.

Male. Length, 4 mm.; of wing, 3.8 mm. Face wide, silvery white. Front silvery white, concolorous with face. Antennae black, the third joint about as long as broad, evenly rounded below. Orbital cilia white, the uppermost bristle black. Palpi and proboscis yellow.

On page 81, of the Manual, it will be noticed that the key to the genera of Tochyporini is somewhat ccnfused. The alternate to the fitst series of characters refers us to number seven of the key. As there is no number seven, I have thought it advisable to publish the key in corrected form. It seems obvious that Bradley in re-arranging the key desired to follow Leconte and Horn's sequence of genera, viz. Tachinus, Tachyporus, Leucoparyphus (Cilea), Physetoporus, Erchomus, and Conosoma.

The relative density of corn-rootworm larvae was estimated in two field plots with 4 different plant spacings and with up to 4 plants clumped per location. In both fields the relationship between plant spacing and the number of corn rootworms per sample was similar with the maximum number of larvae occurring when plants were 46 or 50 cm apart. The number of plants clumped per location affected the numbers of corn rootworm in only one field. The relationship between clumping of plants and number of corn rootworms was curvilinear in this field with the most corn rootworms occurring at 3 plants per location.

EGG—Conoidal, truncated, not so broad at base as Idalia, the sides less rounded ; depressed at summit; marked vertically by about eighteen prominent, slightly wavy ribs, half of which extend from base to summit and form around the latter a serrated rim; the remainder end irregularly at two thirds to three quarters distance from base, sometimes squarely at one of the striæ, but usually curve towards and unite with the long ribs; between each pair of ribs are equi-distant transverse striæ.
