This essay highlights hitherto overlooked continuities between Husserl’s phenomenological idealism and Hegel’s absolute idealism. I focus on Husserl’s account of essence and argue that some of Husserl’s core expositions of essences suggest that they are akin to Hegelian concrete universals: like concrete universals, phenomenological essences are ideal entities instantiated in particulars and exemplify a structure of unity-in-difference. Husserl’s proximity to these Hegelian tenets is evident in his account of the ego’s self-constitution, which is broadly consistent with Hegel’s account of the determination of the Concept. Appreciating Husserl’s similarities with Hegel suggests a means of reconciling competing metaphysical, epistemic, and transcendental interpretations of Husserl’s idealism. By revealing the extent to which the transcendental character of Husserl’s phenomenology is embedded within some absolute idealist commitments, these results locate Husserl in hybrid philosophical territory, between transcendental and absolute versions of idealism, allowing him to reconcile his transcendental and realist commitments, and offering him a defence against the charge that he succumbs to an unsophisticated and unattractive form of subjectivism.
Nematode records and specimens from the South Australian Museum, Australian Museum, CSIRO Wildlife Collection, Queensland Museum, Western Australian Museum, and Natural History Museum, London, of 1107 individuals of Rattus fuscipes were examined. The nematode community comprised 19 families, 36 genera, and 44 identified species. Mastophorus muris and unidentified heligmonellids were recovered from 4 individuals of R. f. fuscipes. Rattus f. assimilis was infected with 40 identified species of nematode from 955 individuals; R. f. coracius 18 species from 107 individuals; and R. f. greyii 8 species from 28 individuals. Rattus fuscipes harboured 18 species in Northern Queensland, 27 species in Southern Queensland, 27 species in New South Wales, 19 species in Victoria, and 8 species in South Australia. A bootstrap analysis of the R. f. greyii nematode community indicated that 91.3% of species had been found. No core species were revealed. The Trichostrongylidae dominated with Nippostrongylus magnus, and Odilia emanuelae occurring in all the populations. Nippostrongylus magnus, 43% prevalence, in Victoria and Physaloptera troughtoni, 42% prevalence, in South Australia were secondary species. Sorensen’s indices indicated that R. f. assimilis and R. f. coracius had the most similar nematode communities, 54.8%. Overall, the Northern and Southern Queensland populations were most similar (77.3%) and the New South Wales and South Australian populations least similar (22.9%). The identifications of Heterakis spumosa, Physaloptera troughtoni, Rictularia mackerrasae, and Pterygodermatites pearsoni were confirmed. The species composition of the nematode community of R. fuscipes suggested a scenario of coevolution, host switching, recently acquired and occasional infections in a community of cosmopolitan, regional, and indigenous species. Species throughout the component communities of R. fuscipes indicated that climate and habitat were also determinants of species composition.
We enumerate the low-dimensional cells in the Voronoi cell complexes attached to the modular groups $\mathit {SL}_N(\mathbb{Z} )$ and $\mathit {GL}_N(\mathbb{Z} )$ for $N=8,9,10,11$, using quotient sublattice techniques for $N=8,9$ and linear programming methods for higher dimensions. These enumerations allow us to compute some cohomology of these groups and prove that $K_8(\mathbb{Z} ) = 0$. We deduce from it new knowledge on the Kummer-Vandiver conjecture.
This systematic review examined the associations of dietary factors such as nutrients, food intake, dietary patterns and dietary biomarkers with structural and functional brain MRI biomarkers, focusing on macrostructural, microstructural, lesion and perfusion measures, and functional activity/connectivity. Articles published in English were systematically searched in PubMed, Embase and PsycInfo up to 19 July 2024. A total of thirty-eight prospective cohort studies (twenty-three cross-sectional and fifteen longitudinal analyses) and thirteen intervention studies were included. Cross-sectional analyses revealed heterogenous associations: baked fish correlated with larger hippocampal volumes (β = 0·21), while oily fish, dairy products and tofu adversely related to ventricle grade. Pro-inflammatory dietary patterns were positively associated with silent infarct risk (DII Q4 v. Q1, OR = 1·77), whereas anti-inflammatory patterns tended to favour brain preservation. Longitudinal studies demonstrated more consistent protective associations: green tea consumption (+100 mL/d) reduced hippocampal atrophy by 0·024%/year, prudent dietary patterns preserved +203 mm3 left hippocampal volume over 4 years and higher plasma carotenoids decreased medial temporal lobe loss by 0·02 cm3/year. However, null findings were common across multiple dietary factors. Interventions showed limited structural benefits (effective in only two of six studies), while polyphenol-rich supplements more consistently improved cerebral perfusion and functional connectivity. Longitudinal and intervention studies demonstrated more consistent patterns than cross-sectional analyses; however, current evidence remains limited for clinical translation. Findings from cross-sectional analyses, despite being from prospective cohorts, require careful interpretation. Further replication across diverse populations and standardised long-term studies are needed before translating these associations into clinical practice.
Waheed Hussain’s Living with the Invisible Hand argues that, although the market economy is valuable for efficiently coordinating production and consumption, it is morally problematic because it draws us into patterns of activity that bypass our own judgment as rational beings. This makes the market potentially “authoritarian.” But what exactly does it mean to say that the market “bypasses our judgment”? In this article, I seek to clarify this idea and suggest that Hussain has actually identified a few separable senses in which it might be true. These different senses are important to distinguish because they call for different remedies.
Augustine and Aquinas assume that Moses’s law figures Christ. In this piece, I show how their complementary accounts of the old law rest upon other doctrinal emphases, namely providence, God the Father, and created things as participations in divine goodness. By drawing out these themes, I advance reflection on the worth of Moses’s law, unfolding how other doctrines structure loving attention to the law as indicative of Christ.
A data assimilation (DA) strategy based on an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is used to enhance the predictive capabilities of scale-resolving numerical tools for the analysis of flows exhibiting cyclic behaviour. More precisely, an ensemble of numerical runs using large-eddy simulations (LES) for a compressible intake flow rig is augmented via the integration of high-fidelity data. This observation is in the form of instantaneous velocity measurements, which are sampled at localised sensors in the physical domain. Two objectives are targeted. The first objective is the calibration of an unsteady inlet condition suitable to capture the cyclic flow investigated. The second objective is the analysis of the synchronisation of the LES velocity field with the available observations. In order to reduce the computational costs required for this analysis, a hyper-localisation procedure (HLEnKF) is proposed and integrated in the library CONES, tailored to perform fast online DA. The proposed strategy performs a satisfactory calibration of the inlet conditions, and its robustness is assessed using two different prior distributions for the free parameters optimised in this task. The DA state estimation is efficient in obtaining accurate local synchronisation of the inferred velocity fields with the observed data. The modal analysis of the kinetic energy field provides additional insight into the improved reconstruction quality of the velocity field. Thus, the HLEnKF shows promising features for the calibration and synchronisation of scale-resolved turbulent flows, opening perspectives of applications for complex phenomena using advanced tools such as digital twins.
Therapies provided in nontraditional settings or by individuals without knowledge of core principles of infection prevention and control (IPC) may place consumers at risk of adverse events. We summarize findings from our recent consultation experiences in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help identify targets for prevention efforts and enhanced consumer protections.
Methods:
We reviewed records of DHQP consultations with state, local, or territorial health officials conducted from 2016 to 2023 to identify investigations involving nontraditional therapies or settings in the United States. Information collected included type of procedure or therapy, type of setting, pathogens involved, number of affected individuals, and types of IPC issues identified.
Results:
Of 1500 consultations, we identified 30 (2%) involving nontraditional therapies or settings. Therapies were performed for esthetic reasons, general wellness, or as treatment for pain. Infectious pathogens were identified in the blood, joint fluid, and skin and soft tissue, and included viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Investigations revealed breaches in injection safety, medical device reprocessing, medication preparation and handling, and environmental disinfection. Over 7000 consumers received notification regarding potential exposure to an infectious pathogen.
Conclusions:
This summary highlights the potential infectious risks to consumers posed by nontraditional therapies, which may have unproven benefits and poorly defined risks. With continued expansion of nontraditional therapies and settings, consumers will benefit from education, training, and oversight of those who provide therapies in these settings.
I argue that Waheed Hussain’s critique of advanced market economies would be strengthened if, rather than emphasizing how markets draw us into particular patterns of activity in a “judgment-bypassing” way, through changes in prices and wages, he focused more on an idea that he explores in the first two chapters of Living with the Invisible Hand: the need to justify the specific institutional powers that an advanced market economy creates. I examine how this suggestion relates to two of Hussain’s central claims: that markets are mechanisms of decentralized social governance, and that they pose a distinct threat to our freedom.
A caseinomacropeptide (CMP) concentrate was produced from sweet whey by ultrafiltration (UF) and diafiltration (DF) using polyethersulfone (PES) membrane. Effects of the pH of whey feed and molecular weight cut-off of membrane (9 and 25 kDa) on permeate flux, recovery and purity of CMP were investigated. Before the UF, a pre-heat treatment at 90°C for 1 h and then acifidication to pH of 5 were applied to precipitate the major proteins in sweet whey. The pH value of UF feed was re-adjusted to different pH values (3, 4, 5, 7 and 9) to concentrate CMP molecule in the retentate and separate other whey proteins through permeate. Feed pH of 9 and 7 provided an adequate flux with 9 kDa- and 25 kDa-membrane, respectively. A volumetric concentration factor of 4 was reached with both membranes by UF and subsequent DF, but the process time was shorter with 25 kDa-membrane because of the higher permeate flux. One DF cycle was possible with 25 kDa-membrane as there was a substantial loss of CMP compared to four DF cycles with 9 kDa-membrane. About 58% of CMP in whey was recovered using 9 kDa-membrane while 33% of it was recovered with 25 kDa-membrane by the whole process. α-Lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin, tyrosine and phenylalanine contents in the final concentrate, which are related to the purity of CMP were found similar in both cases. Sweet whey pre-treatment was the key point for purity of CMP concentrate before UF/DF. Both PES membranes can be used for the production of a CMP concentrate depending on desired recovery, composition and process time.
The Bristol model is an inner model of $L[c]$, where c is a Cohen real, which is not constructible from a set. The idea was developed in 2011 in a workshop taking place in Bristol, but was only written in detail by the author in [8]. This article is a guide for those who want to get a broader view of the construction. We try to provide more intuition that might serve as a jumping board for those interested in this construction and in odd models of $\mathsf {ZF}$. We also correct a few minor issues in the original paper, as well as prove new results. For example, the Boolean Prime Ideal theorem fails in the Bristol model, as some sets cannot be linearly ordered, and the ground model is always definable in its Bristol extensions. In addition to this we include a discussion on Kinna–Wagner Principles, which we think may play an important role in understanding the generic multiverse in $\mathsf {ZF}$.
It is assumed that the biology and ecology of commercial fish species are relatively well-known, given that many of these parameters are key for stock assessment in fisheries management. Surprisingly (or not), several new parasite species are described annually from fish that are of commercial and cultural importance. Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) is an important commercial fish species in the North Atlantic with more than 50 parasite species having been reported from it. Despite its commercial importance in Icelandic waters, only 11 parasite species have been reported from Icelandic haddock. In February and March 2023, 26 haddock were sampled, including 16 and 10 from the north and south of Iceland, respectively. Fish were examined for parasites, with a focus on macroparasites (large, usually visible to the eye). Parasites were identified morphologically with identifications of helminths confirmed using DNA barcoding (Sanger sequencing). Overall, 19 different parasite species were recovered with 17 being shared between haddock sampled from the north and south of Iceland. Of these, eight represent new geographical records for parasites of haddock in Icelandic waters. Our study indicates that monitoring for parasites remains important, regardless of how well a species has been studied. Furthermore, reporting parasites per organ and per region, especially when areas are known to be influenced by different abiotic and physical features, is important in the context of parasites as biological tags for stock identification. Despite a small sample size, our study suggests that some parasites might act as potential biological tags for stock identification of haddock in Icelandic waters.
Digital technologies have transformed the way governments around the world maintain social and political order. However, the intrusive and often repressive nature of modern political control mechanisms, such as digital surveillance and digital censorship, is largely concealed from the public and becomes “normalized” by state propaganda, particularly in authoritarian regimes. Engaging with the political psychology literature on emotion, we examine how citizens respond emotionally to such control when exposed to relevant revealing information and how these emotions relate to shifts in attitudes toward authoritarian governments. Using a survey experiment and 50 in-depth interviews conducted in China, we find that exposure to revealing information about digital control slightly amplifies negative emotions but profoundly reduces positive emotions and significantly undermines public support for authoritarian digital governance. These effects are more pronounced in the context of digital surveillance than censorship and are most severe when individuals perceive control measures as personally targeted. Our findings underscore the political-psychological consequences of digital control, emphasizing the role of emotions in shaping public responses to digital authoritarianism based on new insights into the affective dimensions of digital repression.
Previous research on the underpinnings of support for conspiracy theories has explored the role of both generalized trust and political trust, but scholars have yet to explore whether both generalized and political anxiety are related to support for conspiracy theories. While studies have shown that general measures of anxiety predict support for conspiracy theories, researchers have not yet devoted much attention to understanding whether feelings of political anxiety are also related to conspiracy theory endorsement. Using data from an original survey fielded in 2023 that includes a measure of generalized anxiety and an eight-item measure that specifically captures political anxiety, we find that political anxiety is not related to conspiracy theory support, and that generalized anxiety is weakly related to conspiracy theory support. Thus, although there are good reasons to be concerned about the ill effects of political anxiety, it does not appear to be strongly related to conspiracy theory endorsement.
Dehydration, assessed by urine and blood evaluation, is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The association between water deficit, as determined by a dietary assessment, and CKD prevalence is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify this association among adults in the USA. This cross-sectional study included the data of 9332 participants aged 18 years or older from the 2009–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Water turnover was calculated using an equation developed by the International Doubly Labelled Water Database Group. Total water intake was assessed by 24-h dietary recall on ≥ 1 d. Water deficit was defined as the ratio of water intake to water turnover. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 ml/min/1·73 m2, calculated by the 2021 CKD Epidemiology formula. OR for CKD prevalence were calculated using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models. The mean daily water intake, turnover and deficit were 2799 ml, 3290 ml and –15 %, respectively. CKD prevalence was 6·3 %. After adjusting for lifestyle and urine and serum osmolality, the fourth water deficit quartile was inversely associated with CKD prevalence when compared with the first quartile (OR, 0·71; 95 % CI, 0·51, 0·98). In the spline analysis, the water deficit at which the OR for CKD prevalence plateaued was approximately –30 % to 0 %. Water deficit had an L-shaped association with CKD prevalence independent of urine and serum osmolality, highlighting the importance of assessing water intake relative to dietary needs. These findings may assist the development of water requirements.
We use particle-based simulation to study the rheology of dense suspensions comprising mixtures of small colloids and larger grains subject to contact, lubrication and Brownian forces. These suspensions exhibit shear thinning at low shear rates and shear thickening at high shear rates. By systematically varying the volume fraction of the two species, we demonstrate a monotonic increase in viscosity when grains are added to colloids, but, conversely, a non-monotonic response in both the viscosity and shear-thickening onset when colloids are added to grains. Both effects are most prominent at intermediate shear rates where diffusion and convection play similar roles in the dynamics. We rationalise these results by measuring the maximum flowable volume fraction as functions of the Péclet number and composition, showing that in extreme cases increasing the solids content can disrupt grain contacts and thus allow a jammed suspension to flow. These results establish a constitutive description for the rheology of bidisperse suspensions across the colloidal-to-granular transition, with implications for flow prediction and control in multicomponent particulate systems.
This article explores the patriotic war bonds of the Second Polish Republic, which were sold both domestically and to the diaspora in the United States, during Poland’s border conflicts of 1918–21. It reveals how government and grassroots initiatives converged to mobilise diverse constituencies in Poland, including ethnic minorities, women and the poor. In the United States, these efforts were also marked by tensions between patriotism and professionalism in fundraising for a nationalist cause. It finds commonalities between the Polish war bonds and those of the Great War, in particular the US Liberty Loans. However, for Poland, the article argues, the bonds were not merely financial instruments but also vehicles through which the Second Polish Republic performed its newfound sovereignty, seeking popular recognition at home and abroad.
This article deals with the class of existentially closed models of fields with a distinguished submodule (over a fixed subring). In the positive characteristic case, this class is elementary and was investigated by the first-named author. Here we study this class in Robinson’s logic, meaning the category of existentially closed models with embeddings following Haykazyan and Kirby, and prove that in this context this class is NSOP$_1$ and TP$_2$.
This study examines changes in supportive care needs, quality of life and social support among laryngeal cancer patients following total laryngectomy.
Methods
Ninety-nine patients were assessed pre-operatively (T0), one (T1), three (T2) and six months (T3) post-total laryngectomy using SCNS-SF34, FACT-H&N and PSSS. Statistical analysis included repeated-measures analysis of variance and paired t-tests.
Results
Unmet needs increased significantly over time in physical/daily (46.46 per cent →86.87 per cent), psychological (60.61 per cent →93.94 per cent), patient care (83.84 per cent →97.98 per cent) and health system domains (85.86 per cent →96.97 per cent), while sexual needs remained low. SCNS-SF34 scores rose (113.03→145.25; p < 0.001), FACT-H&N declined (97.17→75.19; p < 0.001) and PSSS decreased (55.48→41.99; p < 0.001), with family support most affected. All scales showed significant timepoint differences (p < 0.05). Notably, none of the patients underwent voice function restoration surgery during the study follow-up period, which may have amplified voice-related impacts on these outcomes.
Conclusion
Following total laryngectomy, laryngeal cancer patients experience escalating supportive care needs, alongside significant declines in quality of life and social support—with family support particularly affected by caregiving burdens.
