An approximation method based on a certain Sonnenschein matrix is studied. Results are obtained for approximation in an interval and in the complex plane. A connection between convergence of the approximation process and regularity of the matrix is also discussed.

In this paper we study the approximation of vector valued continuous functions defined on a topological space and we apply this study to different problems. Thus we give a new proof of Machado's Theorem. Also we get a short proof of a Theorem of Katětov and we prove a generalization of Tietze's Extension Theorem for vector-valued continuous functions, thereby solving a question left open by Blair.

Beniamino Segre, in his memorial lecture of 1958 [5], [6], inaugurated the study of non-linear geometry in three dimensions over a division ring. In his treatment of sections of quadrics by planes, he is naturally led to consider conics and the problem of tangency. Now in the commutative case the locus of intersection of a quadric and a plane containing a generator is the line-pair consisting of this generator and one from the other family. Such a plane is then the tangent plane of the point of intersection of the two generators. Segre extends this notion to the non-commutative case, where the locus of intersection is not always a line-pair. He joins up the remaining points of intersection in pairs, and calls the points where the lines so formed cut the base generator, the ‘points of contact’ of the plane (π) and the quadric (Q). A line in π is called a ‘tangent’ if it passes through a point of contact, but does not contain any of the points of intersection of Q and π.

The purpose of this note is to prove the following. Suppose \mathfrak{R}$\mathfrak{R}$ is a semiprime unity ring having an idempotent element e$e$ (e\neq 0,~e\neq 1$e\neq 0,~e\neq 1$) which satisfies mild conditions. It is shown that every additive generalized Jordan derivation on \mathfrak{R}$\mathfrak{R}$ is a generalized derivation.

Two generalized mean value theorems, for functions with values in a linear locally convex topological space, are proved, as consequences of two theorems for real valued functions of real variable.

Various lattices of subgroups of a finite transitive permutation group G can be used to define a set of ‘basic’ permutation groups associated with G that are analogues of composition factors for abstract finite groups. In particular G can be embedded in an iterated wreath product of a chain of its associated basic permutation groups. The basic permutation groups corresponding to the lattice L of all subgroups of G containing a given point stabiliser are a set of primitive permutation groups. We introduce two new subgroup lattices contained in L, called the seminormal subgroup lattice and the subnormal subgroup lattice. For these lattices the basic permutation groups are quasiprimitive and innately transitive groups, respectively.

Let {Xn: n ≧ 1} be a sequence of independent random variables and write Letand let . Suppose that converges in law to the standard normal distribution (see [5, 280] for necessary and sufficient conditions). Let {xn} be a monotonic sequence of positive real numbers such that xn → ∞ as n → ∞. Then as n → ∞ for all ε > 0. [6] Rubin and Sethuraman call probabilities of the form probabilities of moderate deviations and obtain asymptotic forms for such probabilities under appropriate moment conditions.

In a group G, um (G) denotes the subgroup of the elements which normalize every subnormal subgroup of G with defect at most m. The m-Wielandt series of G is then defined in a natural way. G is said to have finite m-Wielandt length if it coincides with a term of its m-Wielandt series. We investigate the structure of infinite groups with finite m-Wielandt length.

We consider in this paper the question of when the finite sum of products of two Toeplitz operators is a finite-rank perturbation of a single Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space over the unit disk. A necessary condition is found. As a consequence we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the product of three Toeplitz operators to be a finite-rank perturbation of a single Toeplitz operator.

We give a characterization of nuclear Fréchet lattices in terms of lattice properties of the seminorms. Indeed, we prove that a Fréchet lattice is nuclear if and only if it is both an AL- and an AM-space.

In this paper we study groups in which every subgroup is subnormal of defect at most 3. Let G be a group which is either torsion-free or of prime exponent different from 7. We show that every subgroup in G is subnormal of defect at most 3 if and only if G is nilpotent of class at most 3. When G is of exponent 7 the situation is different. While every group of exponent 7, in which every subgroup is subnormal of defect at most 3, is nilpotent of class at most 4, there are examples of such groups with class exactly 4. We also investigate the structure of these groups.

Several rather general sufficient conditions for the extrapolation of the calculus of generalized Dirac operators from L2 to Lp are established. As consequences, we obtain some embedding theorems, quadratic estimates and Littlewood–Paley theorems in terms of this calculus in Lebesgue spaces. Some further generalizations, utilised in Part II devoted to applications, which include the Kato square root model, are discussed. We use resolvent approach and show the irrelevance of the semigroup one. Auxiliary results include a high order counterpart of the Hilbert identity, the derivation of new forms of ‘off-diagonal’ estimates, and the study of the structure of the model in Lebesgue spaces and its interpolation properties. In particular, some coercivity conditions for forms in Banach spaces are used as a substitution of the ellipticity ones. Attention is devoted to the relations between the properties of perturbed and unperturbed generalized Dirac operators. We do not use any stability results.

In this note we apply a particular technique to obtain information on the homology homomorphism ε*: H*(G; A) → H* (Q; A) associated with a group extension and a Q-module A. The technique consists of using ε itself to pull-back (0.1); that is, we construct the pull-back extension induced from (0.1) by ε. This, however, is nothing but the semidirect product, NG, of N and G, with G operating on the left on N by conjugation. Thus we obtain from (0.1) the commutative diagram where ε1 is the projection and et is the multiplication ε1(n, x) = nx,n∈N,x∈G. We now apply the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence functor to (0.2) and carry out computations in dimensions 2 and 3.

This paper deals with 3-forms on six-dimensional manifolds, the first dimension where the classification of 3-forms is not trivial. It includes three classes of multisymplectic 3-forms. We study the class which is closely related to almost complex structures.

In Russell (1973) a Riemann-type necessary and sufficient condition was given for the existence of (defined also in Russell (1975)) when f was bounded and g was k-convex in [a′, b′]. In this paper we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a particular Stieltjes-type integral without imposing a convexity condition upon g. These conditions are used to obtain an additivity result for the integral over adjoining intervals without any additional restrictions being imposed upon the functions involved.

In the first paper of this series [4] I gave a brief summary of the properties of symmetrisable operators in Hilbert Space. A detailed discussion of these properties will be given now, but the properties of operators symmetrisable by bounded operators will be dealt with further in Part III.

A variety B is called solutionally complete if any system of algebraic equations over an algebra A in B has a solution in A provided it is solvable in B and has at most one solution in any extension of A in B. B is called solutionally compatible if every solvable system of equations over an algebra in B is also solvable over any extension of that algebra. It is shown that solutional compatibility is equivalent with the amalgamation property and that a weaker form of the strong amalgamation property is sufficient but not necessary for equational completeness.

The paper examines the classes K1 and Γ1 of Hausdorff uniform spaces which are Gδ-closed in their Samuel compactifications, or completions. It is shown that the classes are epi-reflective, the reflections K1 and Γ are described, K1 and Γ1 are represented as epi-reflective hulls, membership in the classes is described by fixation of certain zero-set ultrafilters, and it is shown that k1 = Γ1 exactly on spaces without discrete sets of measurable power. The results include familiar facts about realcompact and topologically complete topological spaces and are closely connected with the theory of metric-fine uniform spaces.

It is proved that a finite metabelian group G is determined by its group ring KG where the ring K satisfies the following conditions.

Let k be a non-zero complex number and let u and v be elements of a finite group G. Suppose that at most one of u and v belongs to O(G), the maximal normal subgroup of G of odd order. It is shown that G satisfies X(v)–X(u) = k for every complex nonprincipal irreducible character X in the principal 2-block of G, if and only if G/O(G) is isomorphic to one of the following groups: C2, PSL(2, 2n) or pΣL(2, 52a+1), where n≥2 and a ≥ 1.
