Is it justified to adopt a two-dimensional continuum model for the movement and large-scale deformation of pack ice? A preliminary study oi’ ERTS-1 photography shows that the details of the ice movement are readily measurable; the problem is not in the accuracy of the remote sensing but in the inherent graininess of the sea ice. There is a spatial variation of ice velocity on a scale of several hundreds of kilometres; smaller-scale variations are superimposed on this, but their amplitude is not enough to obscure the large-scale trend. A continuum model is applicable, but, because of the small-scale variations in the velocity of the sea ice itself, it is not meaningful to specify continuum strain-rates on a scale of, say, 100 km to more than a certain accuracy, If ERTS pictures are available during the AIDJEX main experiment they could provide the necessary strain and displacement measurements for comparison with the predictions of the AIDJEX model.

The combined heat, ice and water balance was calculated for the McCall Glacier basin (30.6 km²) for a 36 day period in summer of 1971. This period represents about half the ablation period in this region. The heat balance was measured by detailed observations over ice, and secondary stations were established over snow and moraine surfaces. The heat balances calculated for stations located respectively on ice and snow surfaces were assumed to be representative of all such surfaces. The moraine station was only used to obtain evaporation data for areas of the basin not covered by glacier (totalling about 70%). Corrections were made to the radiative fluxes owing to screening of the surrounding mountains and the exposure of the glacier. The ice balance was calculated using 80 ablation/accumulation stakes and the discharge was measured with a water-level recorder, which was calibrated with a current meter. The precipitation was measured with seven rain gauges. Compared with the direct run-off measurements, the values calculated from the heat balance gave a value 5.5% higher, and the stake measurements a value 8.9% lower. This agreement is considered satisfactory and strengthens confidence in the methods employed in each of the three individual calculations.

A number of measurements of ice flow in the coastal regions of Antarctica are given. Observations show that the general outward movement of the continental ice, termed “sheet flow”, is locally accelerated where “ice streams” are formed. Estimates indicate that ice streams, which only occupy a small fraction of the total length of coast, are responsible for the removal of more ice from the continent than the “sheet flow” over the remaining length of coast. Further estimates suggest that the great bulk of Antarctic icebergs are produced by ice shelves, but that data on ice shelf movement are inadequate at the time of writing.

Glacial ripping involves glaciotectonic disintegration of rock hills and extensive removal of rock at the ice-sheet bed, triggered by hydraulic jacking caused by fluctuating water pressures. Evidence from eastern Sweden shows that glacial ripping caused significant subglacial erosion during the final deglaciation of the Fennoscandian ice sheet, distinct from abrasion and plucking (quarrying). Here we analyse the ice drag forces exerted onto rock obstacles at the base of an ice sheet, and the resisting forces of such rock obstacles: glaciotectonic disintegration requires that ice drag forces exceed the resisting forces of the rock obstacle. We consider rock obstacles of different sizes, shapes and fracture patterns, informed by natural examples from eastern Sweden. Our analysis shows that limited overpressure events, unfavourable fracture patterns, low-transmissivity fractures, slow ice and streamlined rock hamper rock hill disintegration. Conversely, under fast ice flow and fluctuating water pressures, disintegration is possible if the rock hill contains subhorizontal, transmissive fractures. Rock steps on previously smooth, abraded surfaces, caused by hydraulic jacking, also enhance drag forces and can cause disintegration of a rock hill. Glacial ripping is a physically plausible erosion mechanism, under realistic glaciological conditions prevalent near ice margins.

Medial moraines and lineations on the surface of composite glaciers enable the detection of structural and hydrological features. A study of the composite glacier Breidamerkurjökull, south Iceland, indicates relationships between subglacial waterways, ice structure in the junction area, and development of the glacier terminus. First, rivers are situated in or near medial moraines because melt water percolates to the bed and moves from there with the subglacial rivers mainly in the direction of ice flow. Secondly, the contact between two feeder glaciers sometimes forms an angle at the glacier terminus. Then the meltwater river escaping from the contact, generally in a radial direction (away from the glacier front), during the retreat will be transferred to the front of the first receding glacier. The drainage of the contact zone then changes from a radial to a tangential direction, destroying the terminal moraines of the recession stages.

Similar relations are found in relics of Pleistocene ice sheets, two examples of which are compared. The huge subglacial channel of the Münsterländer Kiessandzug-Esker below the ice sheet of the Saalian glaciation in the Münsterland, north-west Germany, was formed in the ice-flow direction. It therefore gives details of the morphology and of the great ice-dammed lake east of the Teutoburger Wald ridge. At the contact between the Norwegian and Baltic Sea glaciers, the terminus formed an angle during the maximum extent of the Weichselian glaciation in northern Jutland. During retreat, the Norwegian glacier receded first. The large melt-water river escaping from the contact between both glaciers had formed the huge Karup Sandur during the maximum, but now, during the recession, it changed to the front of the Norwegian ice, destroying the recession moraines there.

Researchers have analyzed various properties of drumlins within individual drumlin fields in order to provide evidence to help in identifying the processes involved in drumlin formation. One property which has been examined is the spatial distribution of drumlins within a field. Traditionally, in such endeavours the individual drumlins have been represented as points and their distribution examined using techniques of point-pattern analysis. We suggest that not only is such a representation inappropriate at this scale, it also introduces statistical bias which makes the results of such analyses questionable. Consequently, we propose an alternative approach which involves representing individual drumlins as areal phenomena and considering their pattern as a two-phase mosaic. The advantages of such an approach are discussed and it is illustrated by applying it to two different drumlin fields.

Since its inception in 1975, the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) has developed and produced micro- and mesoscale weather forecasts to support avalanche forecast and control needs for the Olympic and Cascades Mountains of Washington and Oregon, U.S.A. This paper describes NWAC’s array of data, observational results, and analytical techniques that make “avalanche weather” forecasting possible. In addition, NWAC’s operational program and the general terrain and climate of the area are described. A sample forecast is also included.

This paper describes how to grow single crystals of ice of desired orientation by applying the method of seed extraction from the melt. A single crystal of more than 1 g can be grown in less than one hour.

On the Ross Ice Shelf near Scott Base the annual surface snow accumulation is about 18 g.cm.−2. The increase of firn density with depth is greater than normal, due to horizontal compaction. Where the bottom of the ice shelf has a density less than 0.8 g.cm.−3 the shelf becomes brine-soaked by vertical infiltration. The bottom of the shelf is melting, at about 44 g.cm.−2 yr.−1 where the bottom is impermeable ice and 73 g.cm.−2 yr.−1 where the bottom is permeable firn. Surface velocities at 40 points within 30 km. of Scott Base vary between 4 and 840 m.yr.−1. From the pattern of velocities, ice thicknesses and surface features, a transition zone is delineated, separating the Ross Ice Shelf from the “McMurdo Ice Shelf”.

Changes in iceberg calving fluxes and oceanographic conditions around Antarctica have likely influenced the spatial and temporal distribution of iceberg fresh water fluxes to the surrounding ocean basins. However, Antarctic iceberg melt rate estimates have been limited to very large icebergs in the open ocean. Here we use a remote-sensing approach to estimate iceberg melt rates from 2011 to 2022 for 15 study sites around Antarctica. Melt rates generally increase with iceberg draft and follow large-scale variations in ocean temperature: maximum melt rates for the western peninsula, western ice sheet, eastern ice sheet and eastern peninsula are ~50, ~40, ~5 and ~5 m a−1, respectively. Iceberg melt sensitivity to thermal forcing varies widely, with a best-estimate increase in melting of ~24 m a−1°C−1 and range from near-zero to ~100 m a−1°C−1. Variations in water shear likely contribute to the apparent spread in thermal forcing sensitivity across sites. Although the sensitivity of iceberg melt rates to water shear prevents the use of melt rates as a proxy to infer coastal water mass temperature variability, additional coastal iceberg melt observations will likely improve models of Southern Ocean fresh water fluxes and have potential for subglacial discharge plume mapping.

Equations and a graph are presented for calculating gravity anomalies on a two-dimensional glacier model having a horizontal upper boundary and a lower boundary which is a parabola with a vertical axis of symmetry.

Much of the surface of an ice shelf is covered with series of undulations. These undulations or “pressure rollers” are particularly noticeable in the neighbourhood of ice rises or ice streams. To date, there is no satisfactory theoretical model explaining the formation of these waves. As a contribution to understanding this phenomenon, this paper investigates the stability of ice shelves to perturbations in the background stress and strain-rate distributions.

The perturbation analysis is based on Glen’s creep law and leads to a continuous eigenvalue problem for the wavelength of the disturbance as a function of growth-rate. It is shown that, provided these strain-rates are sufficiently compressive, waves of the type observed can be expected to form. It is shown that lateral extensional strain-rates have a destabilizing effect and pressure rollers are more likely to form when these are present. Comparison of predicted wavelengths is made with available field data.

Wide-angle seismic reflections from a glacier bed are sensitive to the presence of subglacial water and to the mechanical strength of the basal zone. The phase of a compressional to shear (P-SV) converted wave is particularly sensitive to the shear coupling between the glacier and its bed. Both shear (SV) and compressional (P) reflections from the bottom of Variegated Glacier were obtained before the 1982–83 surge event using explosive sources, and the phases of these reflections (relative to the source) were positive as expected for an ice/bedrock interface. During surge, P-wave reflections from the deepest part of the glacier bed were phase reversed, while somewhat shallower P-wave reflections were not. SV reflections were not clearly observed during surge and cannot be interpreted with confidence, even though the experiments were designed to detect them using three-component geophones. The unexpected P-wave phase reversal might be explained by a thin, mechanically weak or fluidized basal debris layer during surge which acts as a strong seismic absorber and suppresses multiple reflections within the layer. However, the required amount of seismic attentuation in the layer seems unreasonably large. An alternative explanation requiring ∼4–8 m or more of water or water-saturated debris (without strong attenuation) is implausible.

An approximate analysis of (he processes of inciting and freezing of a drill hole, 500 m depth and 0.15 m m initial radius, through an ice shelf was made. Results are expressed in graphical form showing the time available for experimentation under the hole as a function of heating duration. It was also found that refreezing has a much slower rate than melting.

The shape of the former Laurentide ice sheet in what is now northern Ohio and southern Ontario is calculated and the subglacial hydrological potential field computed. Subglacial water flow is found to be concentrated over high points in the bed, such as what is now Kelleys Island in Lake Erie. Some 1010 litres of subglacial melt water per year passed over Kelleys Island.

It is argued that the “glacial” grooves on Kelleys Island are subglacial melt-water channels. Assuming that the subglacial melt water attained saturation with respect to CaCO3, in passing over the limestone of Kelleys Island, the material formerly occupying the grooves could have been dissolved in 102 years. This is a much shorter time than glacier occupancy and the assumption of chemical equilibrium is not critical.

The features on Kelleys Island are fluted valleys about 6 m across and each flute is about 0.1 m in width. Each flute represents a subglacial channel but only one or two of these channels operated at any one time. Blockages, perhaps caused by basal debris, caused the rivers to make minor course changes and in many instances it is possible to determine the order of channel occupancy. The channels were striated after abandonment by water when moving basal debris or debris-laden ice occupied the channels. From the Gauckler-Manning formula and the potential gradient obtained from the ice-sheet model the river velocity is calculated to be about 4 m s–1, in rough agreement with the water flux calculated earlier.

The grooves support the concept that subglacial water flows in “Nye” channels, and raise the suggestion that subglacial erosion by solution is of widespread importance.

A model, relating spatial patterns of snow accumulation in the alpine belt of major mountain ranges to the angular relationship which exists among terrain features such as cirque basins, mean storm-path trajectories, and incident solar radiation, is presented together with a limited amount of relevant empirical data. It is suggested that an “orientation gradient” exists in both the temporal and spatial variation of accumulation and ablation in the alpine terrain, the importance of which varies as some function of the relative control exerted by wind redistribution of snow and of direct incident solar radiation on the accumulation and ablation processes. The data obtained to date suggest that the importance of the orientation gradient varies widely among the mountain ranges studied, being a good predictor of snow distribution patterns in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies and the Snowy Range in southern Wyoming, both of which are relatively windswept, while in the much less windy Bridger Range, in south-western Montana, both orientation and elevation appear to contribute on an almost equal basis. An indirect method of estimating relative amounts of annual mass turnover, using eleven glaciers located in the Wind River of west central Wyoming, is presented.
