Over half of the recent mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet, and its associated contribution to global sea level rise, can be attributed to increased surface meltwater runoff, with the remainder a result of dynamical processes such as calving and ice discharge. It is therefore important to quantify the distribution of melting on the ice sheet if we are to adequately understand past ice sheet change and make predictions for the future. In this article, we present a novel semi-empirical approach for characterising ice sheet surface conditions using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter data from the Sentinel-1 satellite. We apply a state-space model to nine sites within North-East Greenland to identify changes in SAR backscatter, and we attribute these to different surface types with reference to optical satellite imagery and meteorological data. A set of decision-making rules for labelling ice sheet melting states are determined based on this analysis and subsequently applied to previously unseen sites. We show that our method performs well in (1) recognising some of the ice sheet surface types such as snow and dark ice and (2) determining whether the surface is melting or not melting. Sentinel-1 SAR data are of high spatial resolution; thus, in developing a method to identify the state of the surface from these data, we improve our capability to understand the variation of ice sheet melting across time and space.

In an effort to ascertain the drainage mechanism of ice-dammed self-draining lakes, the author made observations on the behavior of the small Casement Glacier Lake in 1967. On 22 July when the first outburst of the lake occurred the water level dropped 31.92 m, leaving approximately 35 m of water remaining. Then, following a 2 week period of stability, the lake level fell gradually but steadily during the rest of the summer. Whereas a second rapid discharge occurred in 1965, one never did in 1967. The initial discharge was subglacial and resulted from flotation of the dam; the slow late-summer drainage, however, cannot be attributed to that mechanism and thus remains to be explained.

Soil temperatures were recorded over periods of several weeks in the years 1909 and 1970 in two sites to a depth of 100 cm. It was found that snow depth was of major importance in the rate of freezing of the soil in winter; where snow cover was less than 5 cm in depth freezing rates were almost double those where snow depth was over 1 m. Snow cover also insulated the soil surface from above-zero air temperatures during spring, and soil thawing commenced from the surface only following the clearance of snow. Similarly, insulation of the soil surface by snow prevented short-term freezing and thawing cycles penetrating the soil, although even where snow cover was absent such short-term cycles were not observed to penetrate the soil to depths in excess of 5 cm. This surficial freezing and thawing of the soil took place more readily in spring than in the autumn. It was concluded that the annual cycle of soil freezing and thawing was the dominant factor in the thermal regime of these soils, short-term freezing cycles affecting only the immediate surface soil layers.

Conduit and regelation water are inferred to drain as ground water from up to 130 km2 of Columbia Icefield. Subglacial conduits appear to be generally occupied by free surface streams. Ground-water flow will allow exchange between the regelation film and conduits. Present-day discharge from beneath the accumulation zone carries little sediment, and past injections of sediment appear to correspond to ancient interglacials. Transport of sediment through cave passages may be analogous to transport through basal conduits.

We demonstrate that a ~20 km long valley glacier in the St. Elias Mountains, Yukon, can experience both partial and full surges, likely controlled by the presence of a topographic constriction and the formation and drainage of supraglacial lakes. Based on analysis of air photos, satellite images and field observations since the 1940s, we identify a full surge of ‘Little Kluane Glacier’ from 2013 to 2018, and a partial surge of just the upper north arm between 1963 and 1972. Repeat digital elevation models and velocity profiles indicate that the recent surge initiated from the upper north arm in 2013, which developed into a full surge of the main trunk from 2017 to 2018 with peak velocities of ~3600 m a−1 and frontal advance of ~1.7 km from May to September 2018. In 2016, a mass movement from the north arm to the main trunk generated a surface depression in a region immediately downstream of a topographic constriction, which promoted the formation and rapid drainage of supraglacial lakes to the glacier bed, and likely established the conditions to propel the initial partial surge into a full surge. Our results underscore the complex interplay between glacier geometry, surface hydrology and topography required to drive full surges of this glacier.

In the coastal mountain chain of southern Victoria Land approximately 4,000 km.2 of glacier-cut valleys and dividing ranges are almost completely ice-free, while the surrounding areas are fully glacierized.

In the ice-free Wright Valley and Victoria Valley systems evidence of four glaciations is recognized. The earliest two glaciations were the most extensive; glaciers flowed eastwards from the ice plateau through the coastal ranges and cut broad valleys extending to McMurdo Sound and the Ross Sea. The moraines of these glaciations are thin and highly weathered. The third glaciation was less extensive, consisting of advances by smaller glaciers derived from the inland ice plateau, the Wilson Piedmont Glacier and névé fields in the dividing ranges. The surfaces of moraines of this glaciation are now partly covered by saline lakes, evaporite deposits and extensive areas of desert pavements strewn with ventifacts. The fourth and youngest glaciation comprised small advances by remnants of the plateau-fed valley glaciers. Thick boulder moraines of this glaciation overlie earlier deposits.

During each glaciation the greatest volume of ice was derived from the inland ice plateau. The volume of ice entering the valleys was dependent on the difference in altitude between the plateau surface and subglacial rock thresholds at the valley heads. Decrease in the surface level of the inland ice plateau caused the rock thresholds to increasingly hinder the eastward flow of plateau ice until practically no ice could flow down into the valleys, thereby terminating the glaciation. Such a condition exists at the present time.

The chemical composition of meltwater-draining Himalayan glacierized basins reflects the dominance of carbonic acid in weathering of silicate and carbonate minerals, yet the role of sulfuric acid-mediated reactions in the mineral weathering and ionic release is still unclear. Here, we present a long-term study (1992–2018) of chemical weathering characteristics of a precipitation-dominated glacierized basin (Dokriani glacier) of central Himalaya. By using new and reprocessed datasets of major ions from the glacial/subglacial zones of the glacier, we suggest that two-thirds of the dissolved load of the meltwater derives from sulfuric acid-mediated weathering of minerals and rocks. We observed a clear control of carbonic acid-mediated reactions in the early ablation periods, while sulfuric acid-mediated reactions dominate in peak and late ablation periods. The slopes and intercepts in best-fit regressions of [*Ca2+ + *Mg2+ vs *SO42− and HCO3−] and [HCO3− vs *SO42−] in meltwater were following the stoichiometric parameters of sulfide oxidation coupled to carbonate dissolution reactions. The glaciers of the central and western Himalaya are in good agreement with the present estimates. We contend that the bedrock lithology has limited or second-order effects over the ionic release from Himalayan glaciers and surmise that these patterns are broadly applicable to the other orogenic systems of the world.

The first field experiment in the 5 year seasonal Sea Ice Monitoring Site (SIMS) program was conducted in Resolute Passage, Canadian Eastern Arctic, between 15 May and 8 June 1990. This period signals the early melt season of sea ice in that region. A standard array of ice and snow measurements was collected on a daily basis from first-year and multi-year ice to monitor temporal evolution. Measurements included ice salinity, ice temperature and ice-surface roughness, snow salinity, snow temperature, snow density and snow depth. The complex dielectric constant of sea ice was computed from these measurements. Rapid desalination of first-year ice was noticed in the surface layer. Towards the end of the experiment period, salinities of the snow-hoar layer were higher than those of the ice-surface layer. Variation in air temperature is replicated by ice-surface temperature but not by the salinity or dielectric properties. No temporal variation in permittivity and dielectric loss was observed for first-year ice, but a slight increase in both parameters was observed for multi-year ice. As a result, a slight decrease in the microwave-penetration depth was observed for multi-year ice. Physical properties of ice and snow were compared against results obtained from other experiments conducted in different ice-formation regions in the late winter and in the early melt season.

A simulation process model is developed for rating avalanche danger for twelve east-facing avalanche paths loaded by westerly winds. The model simulates layer age and densification, snow depth, snow transport and deposition, formation of melt crusts, snow temperatures, temperature gradient metamorphism, and avalanche danger on a 6 h basis. Conditioned on avalanches alone, the model predicted avalanche potential on 86% of the 175 avalanche days during an eight-year period. It indicated avalanche potential 50% of the time on non-avalanche days. A sensitivity analysis is under way to improve model performance, and simulation of danger from additional avalanche samples is planned.

A statistical analysis of the lengths of grain-boundary and transgranular cracks induced during the initial straining of columnar-grain ice by a compressive load applied perpendicular to the long direction of the columns is presented. The analysis shows that the crack lengths are randomly distributed and form distinct but correlated populations.The lognormal distribution function is shown to be a good descriptor of the populations for 5–90% of their range. Statistical models are presented for the lognormal behaviour of the crack-length distribution and for the strain dependence of the crack density. The models assume that a change in the value of the random variable of the respective population depends on the population value of the variable at the time of the change. It is shown that the model for the strain dependence of the crack density is suitable for the strain dependence of the acoustic emission, measured in both columnar-grain and granular ice subject to constant compressive loads. Evidence is also presented for a lognormal dependence of the dislocation density on strain. The analysis demonstrates that the cracks that form during the initial straining of polycrystalline ice are independent, random events and that the resulting crack populations are precursors to failure by fracture.

In Southeast Greenland, summer melt and high winter snowfall rates give rise to firn aquifers: vast stores of meltwater buried beneath the ice-sheet surface. Previous detailed studies of a single Greenland firn aquifer site suggest that the water drains into crevasses, but this is not known at a regional scale. We develop and use a tool in Ghub, an online gateway of shared datasets, tools and supercomputing resources for glaciology, to identify crevasses from elevation data collected by NASA's Airborne Topographic Mapper across 29000 km2 of Southeast Greenland. We find crevasses within 3 km of the previously mapped downglacier boundary of the firn aquifer at 20 of 25 flightline crossings. Our data suggest that crevasses widen until they reach the downglacier boundary of the firn aquifer, implying that crevasses collect firn-aquifer water, but we did not find this trend with statistical significance. The median crevasse width, 27 meters, implies an aspect ratio consistent with the crevasses reaching the bed. Our results support the idea that most water in Southeast Greenland firn aquifers drains through crevasses. Less common fates are discharge at the ice-sheet surface (3 of 25 sites) and refreezing at the aquifer bottom (1 of 25 sites).

The Vavilov ice cap was perforated in 1988 by a drilling which reached the underlying frozen sediments. In contrast to the overlying glacier ice, the basal ice is composed of different ice layers with a variable debris load. The stable-isotope composition of these layers shows δ values much lower than everywhere else in the core or in the Vavilov ice cap. This is most probably the signature of a remnant of Pleistocene ice which, for the first time, is shown to occur in the Russian Arctic.

A physics-based snow model has been calibrated using data collected at Halley Bay, Antarctica, during the International Geophysical Year. Variations in snow temperature and density are well-simulated using values for the model parameters within the range reported from other polar field experiments. The effect of uncertainty in the parameter values on the accuracy of the predictions is no greater than the effect of instrumental error in the input data. Thus, this model can be used with parameters determined a priori rather than by optimization. The model has been validated using an independent data set from Halley Bay and then used to estimate 10 m temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula plateau over the last half-century.

Annual net balance eight North Cascade glaciers during the 1984-94 period has been determined by measurement of total mass loss firn and ice melt and ice melt and, residual snow depth at the end of the Summer season. Overall spatial density of measurment points is 200 points km−2. Mean annual balance of North Clascade glaciers from 1984 to 1994 has been −0.38 ma−1. The resulting 4.2 m loss in water-equivalent thickness is significant, since North Cascade glaciers have an average thickness of 30–50 m.

Cross-correlation of annual net balance Ior eight glaciers ranges from 0.83 to 0.97. This indicates the mass balances of the eight glaciers have been responding similarly to elimate conditions despite their range of topographic and geographic characteristics. Annual net balance of individual glaciers was correlated with climate records. The highest ablation-season correlation coefficient is mean May–August temperature, ranging from 0.63 to 0.84. The highest accumulation-season correlation coefficient is total accumulation-season precipitation, ranging from 0.35 to 0.59.

The British Antarctic Survey's (BAS) Rapid Access Isotope Drill (RAID), designed for rapid drilling to survey prospective ice core sites, has been deployed at multiple Antarctic locations over 6 years. This drilling method creates ice chippings that can be discretely sampled and analysed for their chemical and water isotopic composition. Ice sampling methods have evolved since the first uses of the BAS RAID, enabling a more quantifiable sample resolution. Here, we show that water isotope records obtained from RAID ice are comparable to those of equivalent depth resolution from proximal ice cores. Records of chemical impurities also show good agreement with nearby cores. Our findings suggest that the RAID is suitable for both chemical and isotopic reconnaissance of drilling sites. Residual contamination of certain ions is discussed, with proposed design changes to avoid this issue with future use.

We developed a novel laser melting sampler (LMS) for ice cores to measure the stable water isotope ratios (δ18O and δD) as temperature proxies at sub-centimeter depth resolutions. In this LMS system, a 2 mm diameter movable evacuation nozzle holds an optical fiber through which a laser beam irradiates the ice core. The movable nozzle intrudes into the ice core, the laser radiation meanwhile melts the ice cylindrically, and the meltwater is pumped away simultaneously through the same nozzle and transferred to a vial for analysis. To avoid isotopic fractionation of the ice through vaporization, the laser power is adjusted to ensure that the temperature of the meltwater is always kept well below its boiling point. A segment of a Dome Fuji shallow ice core (Antarctica), using the LMS, was then demonstrated to have been discretely sampled with a depth resolution as small as 3 mm: subsequent analysis of δ18O, δD, and deuterium excess (d) was consistent with results obtained by hand segmentation within measurement uncertainties. With system software to control sampling resolution, the LMS will enable us to identify temperature variations that may be detectable only at sub-centimeter resolutions in ice cores.

Temperatures were measured within the firn and ice of the upper reaches of the Seward Glacier (referred to in this paper as the “upper Seward Glacier”) to a depth of 204 ft. (62.2 m.) by means of thermohms and a Wheatstone bridge. Thermal boring proved a feasible means of penetrating this glacier. The winter’s chilled layer here develops a thickness of 40–50 ft. (12.2–15.2 m.) and attains temperatures of at least −13° C. Deterioration of the chilled Iayer is rapid and irregular in the final phase and is attributed largely to freezing of percolating melt water. Melt water exerts such a powerful influence on thermal regimen that bodies of firn in environments with mean annual temperatures below freezing may, nonetheless, be geophyaically temperate because of extensive warming by melt water in summer. In both 1948 and 1949, the annual chilled layer on the upper Seward Glacier disappeared within the first 10 days of July. The slow development and rapid deterioration of diurnal crusts on firn and the lag effects at depth reproduce in miniature the behavior of the annual chilled layer. On the basis of its thermal regimen the upper Seward Glacier is geophysically temperate.

The conductive heat flux through the snow and ice is a critical component of the mass and energy budgets in the Arctic sea ice system. We use high horizontal resolution (3–15 cm) measurements of snow topography to explore the impacts of sub-meter-scale snow surface roughness on heat flux as simulated by the Finite Element method. Simulating horizontal heat flux in a variable snow cover modestly increases the total simulated heat flux. With horizontal heat flux, as opposed to simple 1D-vertical heat flux modeling, the simulated heat flux is 10% greater than that for uniform snow with the same mean snow thickness for a 31.5 × 21 m region of sea ice (the largest region we studied). Vertical-only (1D) heat flux simulates just a 6% increase for the same region. However, this is highly dependent on observation resolution. Had we measured the snow cover at 1 m horizontal spacing or greater, simulating horizontal heat flux would not have changed the net heat flux from that simulated with vertical-only heat flux. These findings suggest that measuring and modeling snow roughness at sub-meter horizontal scales may be necessary to accurately represent horizontal heat flux on level Arctic sea ice.
