Thermograph, thermistor, and thermometer readings at a 30 m. deep bergschrund from June 6 to July 22, 1953, showed that there was little direct relationship between air temperatures outside and at the bottom of the Schrund. The air temperature inside ranged from −3.7° C. (253° F.) to +0.5° C. (32.9° F.), but from July 2 onwards it oscillated between –0.5° C. and +0.5° C., with a 3–4 day periodicity. The ice temperature at the bottom of the schrund behaved similarly, though it was about 0.5° C. colder. The oscillations may have been caused by the interplay of flowing melt water (source of heat) and air drainage in quiet weather (source of cold). The granite-gneiss headwall, where not sheathed by refrozen melt water, appeared to be chemically and mechanically unweathered, which supported the conclusions of Battle’s earlier tests in deep bergschrunds and in the laboratory.

The upper 180 ft. (55 m.) of Lake Vanda in Wright Valley, south Victoria Land, is essentially potable, whereas that part below 200 ft. (61 m.) is more than three times as saline as sea-water. The salinity below 200 ft. (61 in.) resulted from the evaporation and freezing, mainly during interglacial (Loop-Trilogy) time, of a larger, less saline body of water.

An alluvial fan in Wright Valley has been dated as interglacial on the basis of (1) ice-marginal channels formed in Loop time that cut across it, and (2) the fjord-like longitudinal cross-section of the valley formed by the ice of the oldest glaciation or glaciations.

Fossils found in till and glacio-fluvial deposits in the McMurdo Sound region, south Victoria Land, date from both early and late Pleistocene interglacial time.

An ocean-bottom core sample obtained in the Ross Sea contained interglacial material. The presence in the sample of glacial marine sediments deposited in interglacial time suggests that the Antarctic Ice Sheet maintained itself throughout the Pleistocene.

Sub-surface efflorescences consisting of a layer of pure salts as much as 3 in, (7.6 cm.) thick are found 2−5 in. (5−13 cm.) below the surface in Loop deposits in Wright Valley. The absence of similar thick occurrences in Trilogy deposits indicates that the efflorescences are, in part at least, interglacial.

Interglacial cinder cones and lava flows are found in the McMurdo Sound area, and some of the widespread scoria present in moraines, glacio-fluvial deposits and beaches dates from interglacial time.

Occasional outsize clasts, some of which are striated, and laminae bent against the enclosed clasts have been recorded throughout the shales and siltstones forming the lower part of the Kohlan Group in the central parts of the Yemen Arab Republic. Such features are interpreted as an indication of continental glaciation. On stratigraphical grounds, these shales and siltstones are assigned to the Permian.

A power law relation between stress and strain rate of the form was used to describe the response to strain rate of S1 ice loaded across the columns at –10° C. The rate exponent, n, decreased with increasing strain from about 4.6 at an observed peak on the load displacement curve to approximately 2.6 at a shortening of 2%. Analysis of these results and of the results of other authors on different forms of ice deformed at the same temperature suggests that the power law exponent, n is proportional to Fc/Fg The parameter Fc/Fg is the far-field basal dislocation climb force divided by the glide force.

Under evaluation is the range of the parameters of internal viscosity and surface friction of flowing avalanches in order to represent the flow numerically by computer program AVALNCH. Nominal values of these parameters are determined to be in the range 0.4 to 0.6 for, snow flowing on snow, with values as high as 0.8 to 0.9 for snow flowing on rough ground. Using a nominal avalanche path, the basic parameters: (1) depth of initial release slab, (2) viscosity and friction, (3) adverse grade, and (4) flow spreading are determined to be in the order listed as regards their relative effect on avalanche runout distance. Program AVALNCH, which permits treatment of flow parameters separately from geometric parameters, provides a versatile tool for the prediction of avalanche runout, as well as for related studies of avalanche dynamics.

A method is described for measuring the thermal conductivity of ice in the temperature range from 0.5 to 5.0 K using a 3He apparatus. The results from our first experiments are not too far from the theoretical law for the low-temperature thermal conductivity of ice . Measurements at still lower temperatures are necessary to confirm our results.

An approximate analysis of (he processes of inciting and freezing of a drill hole, 500 m depth and 0.15 m m initial radius, through an ice shelf was made. Results are expressed in graphical form showing the time available for experimentation under the hole as a function of heating duration. It was also found that refreezing has a much slower rate than melting.

Changes in iceberg calving fluxes and oceanographic conditions around Antarctica have likely influenced the spatial and temporal distribution of iceberg fresh water fluxes to the surrounding ocean basins. However, Antarctic iceberg melt rate estimates have been limited to very large icebergs in the open ocean. Here we use a remote-sensing approach to estimate iceberg melt rates from 2011 to 2022 for 15 study sites around Antarctica. Melt rates generally increase with iceberg draft and follow large-scale variations in ocean temperature: maximum melt rates for the western peninsula, western ice sheet, eastern ice sheet and eastern peninsula are ~50, ~40, ~5 and ~5 m a−1, respectively. Iceberg melt sensitivity to thermal forcing varies widely, with a best-estimate increase in melting of ~24 m a−1°C−1 and range from near-zero to ~100 m a−1°C−1. Variations in water shear likely contribute to the apparent spread in thermal forcing sensitivity across sites. Although the sensitivity of iceberg melt rates to water shear prevents the use of melt rates as a proxy to infer coastal water mass temperature variability, additional coastal iceberg melt observations will likely improve models of Southern Ocean fresh water fluxes and have potential for subglacial discharge plume mapping.

The force F required to separate two ice spheres was measured as a function of environmental temperature T, relative humidity H and the strength E of the external electric field in which the spheres were situated. It was found that over the entire attainable range of T and H, F increased rapidly with increasing E. The increased adhesion was not accompanied by an increase in the rate of growth of the ice bridge between the two spheres and is explicable in terms of Davis’s (1964) calculations of the purely electrostatic forces between two spheres situated in an electric field. The experiments indicate that the rate of growth of snowflakes in a cloud by means of ice crystal aggregation will be markedly enhanced if the cloud is highly electrified.

This paper describes how to grow single crystals of ice of desired orientation by applying the method of seed extraction from the melt. A single crystal of more than 1 g can be grown in less than one hour.

On the Ross Ice Shelf near Scott Base the annual surface snow accumulation is about 18 g.cm.−2. The increase of firn density with depth is greater than normal, due to horizontal compaction. Where the bottom of the ice shelf has a density less than 0.8 g.cm.−3 the shelf becomes brine-soaked by vertical infiltration. The bottom of the shelf is melting, at about 44 g.cm.−2 yr.−1 where the bottom is impermeable ice and 73 g.cm.−2 yr.−1 where the bottom is permeable firn. Surface velocities at 40 points within 30 km. of Scott Base vary between 4 and 840 m.yr.−1. From the pattern of velocities, ice thicknesses and surface features, a transition zone is delineated, separating the Ross Ice Shelf from the “McMurdo Ice Shelf”.

Stable-oxygen-isotope ratios (δ18O) of precipitation and ice-core samples collected from the headwaters of the Urümqi river, Tien Shan, China, were used to test the relationship between δ18O and contemporaneous surface air temperature (Ta). A strong temporal relationship is found between δ18O in precipitation and Ta, particularly for the monthly averages which remove synoptic-scale influences such as changes in condensation level, condensation temperature and moisture sources ( Yao and others, 1996). Linear fits as high as 0.95‰° C-1 for precipitation events and 1.23‰° C-1 for monthly averages are found. Although the δ18O amplitude in ice cores drilled at the nearby Ürümqi glacier No.1(~2 km from the precipitation sampling site) decreased dramatically compared to the precipitation samples, the ice-core records of annually averaged δ18 are still positively correlated with contemporaneous air temperature, especially summer air temperature, at the nearby Daxigou meteorological station. Nevertheless, the relationship between the ice-core δ18O records and contemporaneous air temperature is less significant than that for the precipitation samples due to depositional and post-depositional modification processes, which are highlighted by the successive snow-pit δ18O profiles from the Ürümqi glacier No.1. Our results might extend the application of high-altitude and subtropical ice-core δ18O —Ta records for paleoclimate reconstruction.

The temperature dependence of the high-frequency conductivity of snow was studied for eight samples in the range — 10°C to — 80°C. The activation energies for granular snow varied from 0.60 eV at temperatures down to — 25°C to 0.24 eV at temperatures below — 25°C, and for dry snow from 0.42 eV to 0.18 eV in the same temperature ranges. Dry snow samples had higher conductivities and lower activation energies than granular icy samples throughout the complete temperature range.

Volume and surface conduction processes were operative. At the higher temperatures above — 25°C volume conduction was attributed to Bjerrum defect migration, while at lower temperatures Bjerrum conduction was replaced by ionic-defect conduction. Granular samples which had experienced melting and reflecting on the surface of the crystals have a structural change which decreased the ionic-defect density at the surface and lowered the sample conductivity.

Above — 25°C, the activation energies for granular icy snow were consistent with those for temperate glacier ice and for laboratory single and polycrystalline ice samples, but was not in agreement with those of either polar snow or ice. Below — 25°C, the activation energies for granular snow were consistent with those for temperate glacier ice, containing impurities, and for polar snow and ice. Fresh dry temperate snow-samples had lower activation energies than in situ polar snow.

Slab avalanches are shown to be released by brittle fracture. An analogy is drawn in which the snow-pack is considered to be a macroscopic, molecular model of glass. The analogy is examined qualitatively from two viewpoints: the Griffith fracture criterion, and stress concentration theory. The details of fracture propagation in a layered snow-pack are explained by means of stress concentration theory, and many details of slab avalanches are shown to be consistent with the proposed mechanism. The significance of various fracture surface markings is pointed out.

An easily portably thermal ice drill was designed and constructed, with water vapour being used for melting the ice. A lore hole, 8 m. deep, can be drilled within about 30 min., depending on the ice properties. The energy for boiling the water is supplied by butane cartridges similar to those used for camping purposes. One cartridge lasts for drilling about three holes 8 m. deep. The weight of the whole equipment is 12.5 kg.

Since its inception in 1975, the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) has developed and produced micro- and mesoscale weather forecasts to support avalanche forecast and control needs for the Olympic and Cascades Mountains of Washington and Oregon, U.S.A. This paper describes NWAC’s array of data, observational results, and analytical techniques that make “avalanche weather” forecasting possible. In addition, NWAC’s operational program and the general terrain and climate of the area are described. A sample forecast is also included.
