Compound surfaces, consisting of periodic arrays of solid patches and free surfaces, exhibit hydrodynamic slipperiness which is quantified by their slip length. The limit of small solid fractions, where the slip length diverges, is of fundamental interest. This paper addresses longitudinal liquid flows over a periodic array of grooves which are partially invaded by the liquid. Assuming that the slats separating the grooves are infinitely thin, the solid fraction $\epsilon$ is set by the invasion depth. Inspired by the singular small-solid-fraction limit for non-invaded grooves (Schnitzer, Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 1, 2016, 052101R), we consider the idealised geometry of $90^{\circ }$ protrusion angles, where an integral force balance in the limit $\epsilon \to 0$ implies a slip length that scales as $\epsilon ^{-1}$. The problem exhibits a nested structure, where the liquid domain is conceptually decomposed into four distinct regions: a unit-cell region on the scale of the period, where the wetted portion of the slat appears as a point singularity; two regions on the scale of the wetted slat, where the flow essentially varies in one dimension; and a transition region about the tip of the slat. Analysing these regions using matched asymptotic expansions and conformal mappings yields the ratio of slip length to semi-period as $2\epsilon ^{-1} - (10/{\rm \pi} )\ln 2 + \cdots$.

Non-spherical particles transported by turbulent flow have a rich dynamics that combines their translational and rotational motions. Here, the focus is on small, heavy, inertial particles with a spheroidal shape fully prescribed by their aspect ratio. Such particles undergo an anisotropic, orientation-dependent viscous drag with the carrier fluid flow whose associated torque is given by the Jeffery equations. Direct numerical simulations of homogeneous, isotropic turbulence are performed to study systematically how the translational motion of such spheroidal particles depends on their shape and size. It is found that the Lagrangian statistics of both velocity and acceleration can be described in terms of an effective Stokes number obtained as an isotropic average over angles of the particle's orientation. Corrections to the translational motion of particles due to their non-sphericity and rotation can hence be recast as an effective radius obtained from such a mean.

An exact analytical solution is obtained for the dynamical system derived in Part 1 of this series (Moffatt & Kimura, J. Fluid Mech, vol. 861, 2019a, pp. 930–967), which describes the approach of two initially circular vortices of finite but small cross-section symmetrically located on inclined planes. This exact solution, applicable in the inviscid limit, allows determination of the amplification $\mathcal {A}_{\omega }$ of the axial vorticity within the finite time $T$ during which the basic assumptions of the model continue to apply. It is first shown that, for arbitrarily prescribed $\mathcal {A}_{\omega }$, it is possible to specify smooth initial conditions of finite energy such that, in the inviscid limit, this amplification is achieved within the time $T$. When viscosity is included, an estimate is provided for the minimum vortex Reynolds number that is sufficient for the same result to hold. The predictions are broadly compatible with results from direct numerical simulations at moderate Reynolds numbers. Moreover, it is shown that one may come arbitrarily close to a finite-time singularity of the Navier–Stokes equation by appropriate choice of an initial, smooth, finite-energy velocity field; however, this approach to a singularity is ultimately thwarted through breach of the assumptions on which the dynamical system is based. Thus we make no claim here concerning realisation of a Navier–Stokes singularity. Moreover, we find that the conditions required to attain a large amplification $\mathcal {A}_{\omega }\gg 1$ during the time $T$ are far beyond those that can be realised in either experiment or direct numerical simulation.

Boundary-layer flow over a realistic porous wall might contain both the effects of wall-permeability and wall-roughness. These two effects are typically examined in the context of a rough-wall flow, i.e. by defining a ‘roughness’ length or equivalent to capture the effect of the surface on momentum deficit/drag. In this work, we examine the hypothesis of Esteban et al. (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 7, no. 9, 2022, 094603), that a turbulent boundary layer over a porous wall could be modelled as a superposition of the roughness effects on the permeability effects by using independently obtained information on permeability and roughness. We carry out wind tunnel experiments at high Reynolds number ($14\ 400 \leq Re_{\tau } \leq 33\ 100$) on various combinations of porous walls where different roughnesses are overlaid over a given permeable wall. Measurements are also conducted on the permeable wall as well as the rough walls independently to obtain the corresponding length scales. Analysis of mean flow data across all these measurements suggests that an empirical formulation can be obtained where the momentum deficit ($\Delta U^+$) is modelled as a combination of independently obtained roughness and permeability length scales. This formulation assumes the presence of outer-layer similarity across these different surfaces, which is shown to be valid at high Reynolds numbers. Finally, this decoupling approach is equivalent to the area-weighted power-mean of the respective permeability and roughness length scales, consistent with the approach recently suggested by Hutchins et al. (Ocean Engng, vol. 271, 2023, 113454) to capture the effects of heterogeneous rough surfaces.

In this experimental work, a conus impacts a deep liquid pool at a speed varying from 1.3 to $19.0\ {\rm cm}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. Two liquids (2.5 % butanol–water solution or distilled water) and four coni made from duralumin with a diameter of 180 mm and different deadrise angles $\beta$ ($2^{\circ }$, $3^{\circ }$, $4^{\circ }$ and 5$^{\circ }$) are tested. An air cushion is trapped between the conus solid surface and the liquid. Several types of bubble patterns after the collapse of the air cushion are observed: one or multiple bubbles near the conus centre (vertex), irregular trails of bubbles on the conus surface and a ring of bubbles in a ‘necklace’-shaped arrangement. With a total internal reflection set-up and appropriate image post-processing, the external and internal radii of the ring-shaped wetted area are estimated for each frame. The external (internal) radius increases (decreases) in time following a linear (exponential) law. The speed of the outer border of the wetted area is in agreement with the Wagner theory for a body impacting onto a liquid. The initial radius of the annular touchdown region is estimated as the intersection of the relevant fitting curves. In the studied range of parameters, the initial radius obeys a universal scaling law, which follows from the air–water lubrication–inertia balance.

A machine learning of the unknown a priori viscous damping, incorporated into the single-dominant nonlinear ‘inviscid’ modal theory by Faltinsen et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 407, 2000, pp. 201–234) on resonant sloshing (the forcing frequency close to the lowest natural sloshing frequency) in a clean (no internal structures) rigid rectangular tank, is proposed. The learning procedure requires a set of measured phase lags between the harmonic horizontal tank excitation and the steady-state resonant wave response. A good consistency with experiments by Bäuerlein & Avila (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 925, 2021, A22) on the liquid-mass centre motions is shown. The latter confirms that the free-surface nonlinearity (causing an energy flow from the primary-excited to higher natural sloshing modes) and viscous damping of the higher natural sloshing modes matter, as well as that the damping rates can depend on the steady-state wave amplitude.

We investigate the streamwise vorticity generation mechanism and distribution pattern in an unbounded steady inertial flow past a fixed Platonic polyhedron. Three angular positions are selected: an edge facing the flow (E), a face facing the flow (F) and a vertex facing the flow (V). We provide compelling evidence that the generation of the streamwise vorticity is primarily caused by the tilting of the transverse vorticity that originates from the particle front surface. Each inclined face on the front surface generates a pair of opposite-signed streamwise vortices. They are advected to the particle wake and form a chiral vorticity pattern which preserves the symmetry of the particle front surface. Two particles at dual angular positions exhibit highly similar vorticity patterns. Our study reveals a striking similarity between the vorticity patterns and the far-field optics diffraction pattern of a light beam past a polygonal aperture. We discover the deterministic vorticity generation mechanism to predict the streamwise vorticity patterns based on the distribution of edges and inclined faces on the particle front surface. Conversely, the vorticity patterns themselves can serve as a diagnostic tool to infer the geometry of the opaque particle front surface. Additionally, the vorticity patterns can be used to predict the stable angular position of a freely settling angular particle, which tends to be such that the number of streamwise vorticity pairs in the wake is maximized.

In turbulence near a free surface, strong vortices attach to the surface, creating surface imprints visible as nearly circular ‘dimples’. By studying these imprints in direct numerical simulation (DNS) data we make two observations. First, the imprints of surface-attached vortices can be very effectively distinguished from other turbulent surface features using two physical features: they are nearly circular in shape, and persist for a long time compared with other pertinent time scales. Secondly, the instantaneous number of surface dimples from surface-attached vortices in an area, $N(t)$, is intimately related to its mean-square surface divergence, $\beta ^2(t)$. We develop a simple and physically transparent computer vision procedure which, using the properties of low eccentricity and longevity, detects and tracks vortices from their surface features only, with sensitivity and accuracy of $90\,\%$ or better. We compare $N(t)$ and $\beta ^2(t)$, finding a normalised cross-correlation of $0.90$, with changes in $N$ lagging around $0.8T_\infty$ behind those in $\beta ^2$ ($T_\infty$ is an integral time scale), confirming the common observation that vortices are spawned by strong upwelling events where $\beta ^2$ is large. These findings suggest that the rate of mass flux across the surface, being closely related to surface divergence, can be estimated remotely in some natural flows using visible free-surface dimples as proxy.

The transition to turbulence in conduits is among the longest-standing problems in fluid mechanics. Challenges in producing or saving energy hinge on understanding promotion or suppression of turbulence. While a global picture based on an intrinsically 3-D subcritical mechanism is emerging for 3-D turbulence, subcritical turbulence is yet to even be observed when flows approach two dimensions, e.g. under intense rotation or magnetic fields. Here, stability analysis and direct numerical simulations demonstrate a subcritical quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2-D) transition from laminar flow to turbulence, via a radically different 2-D mechanism to the 3-D case, driven by nonlinear Tollmien–Schlichting waves. This alternative scenario calls for a new line of thought on the transition to turbulence and should inspire new strategies to control transition in rotating devices and nuclear fusion reactor blankets.

In this note we provide an analytical proof of the zero helicity condition for systems governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The proof is based on the hydrodynamic interpretation of the GPE, and the direct use of Noether's theorem by applying Kleinert's multi-valued gauge theory. As a by-product we also demonstrate the conservation and quantization of the circulation for the GPE.

In homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, the relative contributions of different physical mechanisms to the energy cascade can be quantified by an exact decomposition of the energy flux (Johnson, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 124, 2020, 104501; J. Fluid Mech., vol. 922, 2021, A3). We extend the formalism to the transfer of kinetic helicity across scales, important in the presence of large-scale mirror‐breaking mechanisms, to identify physical processes resulting in helicity transfer and quantify their contributions to the mean flux in the inertial range. All subfluxes transfer helicity from large to small scales. Approximately 50 % of the mean flux is due to the scale-local vortex flattening and vortex twisting. We derive a new exact relation between these effects, similar to the Betchov relation for the energy flux, revealing that the mean contribution of the former is three times larger than that of the latter. Multi-scale effects account for the remaining 50 % of the mean flux, with approximate equipartition between multi-scale vortex flattening, twisting and entangling.

When surface waves interact with ambient turbulence, the two affect each other mutually. Turbulent eddies get redirected, intensified and periodically stretched and compressed, while the waves suffer directional scattering. We study these mutual interactions experimentally in the water channel laboratory at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Trondheim. Long groups of waves were propagated upstream on currents with identical mean flow but different turbulence properties, created by an active grid at the current inlet. The subsurface flow in the spanwise–vertical plane was measured with stereo particle-image velocimetry. Comparing the subsurface velocity fields before and after the passage of a wave group, a strong enhancement of streamwise vorticity is observed which increases rapidly towards the surface for $k_0z\gtrsim -0.3$ ($z$, vertical distance from still surface; $k_0$, carrier wavenumber) in qualitative agreement with theory. Next, we measure the broadening of the directional wave spectrum at increasing propagation distance. The rate of directional diffusion is greatest for the turbulent case with the highest energy at the longest length scales whereas the highest total turbulent kinetic energy overall did not produce the most scattering. The variance of directional spectra is found to increase linearly as a function of propagation time.

The interaction of supercritical turbulent flows with granular sediment beds is challenging to study both experimentally and numerically. This challenging task has hampered advances in understanding antidunes, the most characteristic bedform of supercritical flows. This article presents the first numerical attempt to simulate upstream-migrating antidunes with geometrically resolved particles and a liquid–gas interface. Our simulations provide data at a resolution higher than laboratory experiments, and they can therefore provide new insights into the mechanisms of antidune migration and contribute to a deeper understanding of the underlying physics. To manage the simulations’ computational costs and physical complexity, we employ the cumulant lattice Boltzmann method in conjunction with a discrete element method for particle interactions, as well as a volume-of-fluid scheme to track the deformable free surface of the fluid. By reproducing two flow configurations of previous experiments (Pascal et al., Earth Surf. Process. Landf., vol. 46, issue 9, 2021, pp. 1750–1765), we demonstrate that our approach is robust and accurately predicts the antidunes’ amplitude, wavelength and celerity. Furthermore, the simulated wall shear stress, a key parameter governing sediment transport, is in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements. The highly resolved data of fluid and particle motion from our simulation approach open new perspectives for detailed studies of morphodynamics in shallow supercritical flows.

We derive equations relating the pressure at a flat seabed and the free-surface profile for steady gravity waves with constant vorticity. The resulting set of nonlinear equations enables the recovery of the free surface from pressure measurements at the bed. Furthermore, the flow vorticity (unknown a priori) is determined solely from the bottom pressure as part of the recovery method. This approach is applicable even in the presence of stagnation points and its efficiency is illustrated via numerical examples.

Vortex rings are critical for thrust production underwater. In the ocean, self-propelled mesozooplankton generate vortices while swimming within a weakly stratified fluid. While large-scale biogenic transport has been observed during vertical migration in the wild and lab experiments, little focus has been given to the evolution of induced vortex rings as a function of their propagation direction relative to the density gradient. In this study, the evolution of an isolated vortex ring crossing the interface of a stable two-layer system is examined as a function of its translation direction with respect to gravity. The vortex ring size and position are visualized using planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) and the induced vorticity field derived from particle image velocimetry (PIV) is examined. It is found that the production of baroclinic vorticity significantly affects the propagation of vortex rings crossing the density interface. As a result, any expected symmetry between vortex rings travelling from dense to light fluids and from light to dense fluids breaks down. In turn, the maximum penetration depth of the vortex ring occurs in the case in which the vortex propagates against the density gradient due to the misalignment of the pressure and density gradients. Our results have far-reaching implications for the characterization of local ecosystems in marine environments.

To explore the direction of inter-scale transfer of scalar variance between subgrid scale (SGS) and resolved scalar fields, direct numerical simulation data obtained earlier from two complex-chemistry lean hydrogen–air flames are analysed by applying Helmholtz–Hodge decomposition (HHD) to the simulated velocity fields. Computed results show backscatter of scalar (combustion progress variable $c$) variance, i.e. its transfer from SGS to resolved scales, even in a highly turbulent flame characterized by a unity-order Damköhler number and a ratio of Kolmogorov length scale to thermal laminar flame thickness as low as 0.05. Analysis of scalar fluxes associated with the solenoidal and potential velocity fields yielded by HHD shows that the documented backscatter stems primarily from the potential velocity perturbations generated due to dilatation in instantaneous local flames, with the backscatter being substantially promoted by a close alignment of the spatial gradient of mean scalar progress variable and the potential-velocity contribution to the local SGS scalar flux. The alignment is associated with the fact that combustion-induced thermal expansion increases local velocity in the direction of $\boldsymbol {\nabla } c$. These results call for development of SGS models capable of predicting backscatter of scalar variance in turbulent flames in large eddy simulations.

A closed expression for the average pressure difference (often called the macroscopic dynamic capillary pressure in the literature) is proposed for two-phase, Newtonian, incompressible, isothermal and creeping flow in homogeneous porous media. This upscaled equation complements the average equations for mass and momentum transport derived in a previous article. Consistently with this work, the expression is derived employing a simplified version of the volume-averaging method that makes use of elements of the adjoint method and Green's formula. The resulting equation for the average pressure difference is novel, as it shows that this quantity is controlled by the pressure gradient (and body forces) in each phase, as well as interfacial effects, and is applicable to situations in which the fluid–fluid interface is not necessarily at its steady position. The effective-medium quantities associated with the sources are all obtained from the solution of a single adjoint (or closure) problem to be solved on a (periodic) unit cell representative of the process. The average pressure difference predicted by the derived expression is validated through excellent comparisons with direct numerical simulations performed in a model porous structure.

Recent studies of pressure-driven flows of dilute polymer solutions in straight channels demonstrated the existence of two-dimensional coherent structures that are disconnected from the laminar state and appear through a subcritical bifurcation from infinity. These travelling-wave solutions were suggested to organise the phase-space dynamics of purely elastic and elasto-inertial chaotic channel flows. Here, we consider a wide range of parameters, covering the purely elastic and elasto-inertial cases, and demonstrate that the two-dimensional travelling-wave solutions are unstable when embedded in sufficiently wide three-dimensional domains. Our work demonstrates that studies of purely elastic and elasto-inertial turbulence in straight channels require three-dimensional simulations, and no reliable conclusions can be drawn from studying strictly two-dimensional channel flows.

Analysis of satellite altimetry and Argo float data leads Ni et al. (J. Geophys. Res., 125, 2020, e2020JC016479) to argue that mesoscale dipoles are widespread features of the global ocean having a relatively uniform three-structure that can lead to strong vertical exchanges. Almost all the features of the composite dipole they construct can be derived from a model for multipoles in the surface quasi-geostrophic equations for which we present a straightforward novel solution in terms of an explicit linear algebraic eigenvalue problem, allowing simple evaluation of the higher radial modes that appear to be present in the observations and suggesting that mass conservation may explain the observed frontogenetic velocities.

Fast microjets can emerge out of liquid pools from the rebounding of drop-impact craters, or when a bubble bursts at its surface. The fastest jets are the narrowest and are a source of aerosols both from the ocean and from a glass of champagne, of importance to climate and the olfactory senses. The most singular jets, which we observe experimentally at a maximum velocity of $137\pm 4\ {\rm m}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$ and a diameter of $12\ \mathrm {\mu }{\rm m}$, under reduced ambient pressure, are produced when a small dimple forms at the crater bottom and rebounds without pinching off a small bubble. The radial collapse and rebounding of this dimple is purely inertial, but highly sensitive to initial conditions. High-resolution numerical simulations reveal a new focusing mechanism, which drives the fastest jet within a converging conical channel, where an entrained air sheet provides effective slip at the outer boundary of the conically converging flow into the jet. This configuration bypasses any viscous cutoff of the jetting speed and explains the extreme sensitivity to initial conditions observed in detailed experiments of the phenomenon.
