Based on a generalized local Kolmogorov–Hill equation expressing the evolution of kinetic energy integrated over spheres of size $\ell$ in the inertial range of fluid turbulence, we examine a possible definition of entropy and entropy generation for turbulence. Its measurement from direct numerical simulations in isotropic turbulence leads to confirmation of the validity of the fluctuation relation (FR) from non-equilibrium thermodynamics in the inertial range of turbulent flows. Specifically, the ratio of probability densities of forward and inverse cascade at scale $\ell$ is shown to follow exponential behaviour with the entropy generation rate if the latter is defined by including an appropriately defined notion of ‘temperature of turbulence’ proportional to the kinetic energy at scale $\ell$.

Many geological layers include cross bedding, which leads to different values for permeability along and across the bedding planes. We explore how such cross bedding impacts buoyancy-driven flow through an inclined aquifer. For each bedding angle and ratio of the permeability along and across the bedding, a free buoyancy-driven plume rises at a particular angle to the horizontal. If the angle of inclination of the aquifer to the horizontal is smaller than this angle, then the plume rises along the upper boundary, otherwise, somewhat surprisingly, the buoyant plume rises along the lower boundary of the aquifer. We present new laboratory experiments to support these predictions. We also test a model for the effective permeabilities which control the speed and the rate of spread of the plume along one or other boundary of the aquifer. We consider the impact of our results for modelling geological storage of ${\rm CO}_2$ or aquifer thermal energy storage.

We report an experimental and numerical study on Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a slender rectangular geometry with the aspect ratio $\varGamma$ varying from 0.05 to 0.3 and a Rayleigh number range of $10^5\leqslant Ra\leqslant 3\times 10^9$. The Prandtl number is fixed at $Pr=4.38$. It is found that the onset of convection is postponed when the convection domain approaches the quasi-one-dimensional limit. The onset Rayleigh number shows a $Ra_c=328\varGamma ^{-4.18}$ scaling for the experiment and a $Ra_c=810\varGamma ^{-3.95}$ scaling for the simulation, both consistent with a theoretical prediction of $Ra_c\sim \varGamma ^{-4}$. Moreover, the effective Nusselt–Rayleigh scaling exponent $\beta =\partial (\log Nu)/\partial (\log Ra)$ near the onset of convection also shows a rapid increase with decreasing $\varGamma$. Power-law fits to the experimental and numerical data yield $\beta =0.290\varGamma ^{-0.90}$ and $\beta =0.564\varGamma ^{-0.92}$, respectively. Near onset, the flow shows a stretched cell structure. In this regime, the velocity and temperature variations in a horizontal cross-section are found to be almost invariant with height in the core region of a slender domain. As the Rayleigh number increases, the system evolves from the viscous dominant regime to a plume-controlled one, a feature of which is enhancement in the heat transport efficiency. Upon further increase of $Ra$, the flow comes back to the classical boundary-layer-controlled regime, in which the quasi-one-dimensional geometry has no apparent effect on the global heat transfer.

This article presents a theoretical modelling framework for the previously unconsidered case of turbulent wall plumes that detrain continually with height in stably stratified environments. Built upon the classic turbulent plume model, our approach incorporates turbulent detrainment with a variable coefficient of detrainment. Based on a linear constitutive relationship between the ratio of the detrainment to entrainment coefficients and the ambient buoyancy gradient, it is found that for linear ambient stratifications, a dynamic quasi-equilibrium region, characterised by a near invariant local plume Richardson number, is achieved, downstream of which this equilibrium rapidly breaks down. With increasing ambient buoyancy gradient, while the plume becomes increasingly slender with weaker vertical motions, the level at which the plume breaks down to form a horizontal intrusion first decreases and then increases. Moreover, distinct from classic purely entraining plumes, a detraining wall plume can swell within the pre-equilibrium adjustment stage provided the local Richardson number is sufficiently low $({Ri\ll 6})$, behaviour which is in accordance with observations made in filling-box experiments.

Previous mathematical models of quasi-steady turbulent plumes and fountains have described the flow that results from a prescribed input of buoyancy. We offer a new perspective by asking, what input of buoyancy would give rise to a plume, or fountain, with given properties? Addressing this question by means of an analytical framework, we take a first step toward enabling a plume with specific characteristics, i.e. a synthetic plume, to be designed. We develop analytical solutions to the conservation equations that describe four kinds of turbulent flow: axisymmetric plume, starting fountain, line plume and wall plume. Crucially, our solutions do not require the buoyancy distribution to be specified, whether this be the source or off-source distribution. Key to our approach, we specify a function for the volume flux, $Q=f(z)$, and take advantage of the weak coupling between the conservation equations to uniquely express general solutions in terms of $f$. We show that any analytic function $f$ can form the basis for a set of solutions for the fluxes, local variables and local Richardson number, though $f/({\rm d}f/{\rm d}z)>0$ is a necessary condition for physically realistic solutions. As an example of plume synthesis, we show that an axisymmetric plume can have an invariant radius if there is an exponentially increasing input of buoyancy to the plume centreline. We also consider how plume synthesis could be achieved practically.

Inviscid, incompressible liquid is released from rest by a sudden dam break, accelerating under gravity over a uniformly sloping impermeable plane bed. The liquid flows downhill or up a beach. A linearised model is derived from Euler's equations for the early stage of motion, of duration $2\sqrt {H/g}$, where H is the depth scale and $g$ is the acceleration due to gravity. Initial pressure and acceleration fields are calculated in closed form, first for an isosceles right-angled triangle on a slope of $45^{\circ }$. Second, the triangle belongs to a class of finite-domain solutions with a curved front face. Third, an unbounded domain is treated, with a curved face resembling a steep-fronted breaking water wave flowing up a beach. The fluid goes uphill due to a nearshore pressure gradient. In all cases the free-surface-bed contact point is the most accelerated particle, exceeding the acceleration due to gravity. Physical consequences are discussed, and the pressure approximation of shallow water theory is found poor during this early stage, near the steep free surface exposed by a dam break.

Granular jumps commonly develop during granular flows over complex topographies or when hitting retaining structures. While this process has been well-studied for hydraulic flows, in granular flows such jumps remain to be fully explored, given the role of interparticle friction. Predicting the length of granular jumps is a challenging question, relevant to the design of protection dams against avalanches. In this study, we investigate the canonical case of standing jumps formed in granular flows down smooth inclines using extensive numerical simulations based on the discrete element method. We consider both two- and three-dimensional configurations and vary the chute bottom friction to account for the crucial interplay between the sliding along the smooth bottom and the shearing across the granular bulk above. By doing so, we derived a robust scaling law for the jump length that is valid over a wide range of Froude numbers and takes into account the influence of the packing density. The findings have potential implications on a number of situations encountered in industry as well as problems associated with natural hazards.

We present new numerical solutions for nonlinear standing water waves when the effects of both gravity and surface tension are considered. For small values of the surface tension parameter, solutions are shown to exhibit highly oscillatory capillary waves (parasitic ripples), which are both time- and space-periodic, and which lie on the surface of an underlying gravity-driven standing wave. Our numerical scheme combines a time-dependent conformal mapping together with a shooting method, for which the residual is minimised by Newton iteration. Previous numerical investigations typically clustered gridpoints near the wave crest, and thus lacked the fine detail across the domain required to capture this phenomenon of small-scale parasitic ripples. The amplitude of these ripples is shown to be exponentially small in the zero surface tension limit, and their behaviour is linked to (or explains) the generation of an elaborate bifurcation structure.

It is theoretically known that an isotropic chemically active particle in an unbounded solution undergoes symmetry breaking when the intrinsic Péclet number ${{Pe}}$ exceeds a finite critical value (Michelin et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 25, 2013, 061701). At that value, a transition takes place from a stationary state to spontaneous motion. In two dimensions, where no stationary state is possible in an unbounded domain, a linear stability analysis in a large bounded domain (Hu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 123, 2019, 238004) reveals that the critical ${{Pe}}$ value slowly diminishes as the domain size increases. Motivated by these findings, we here consider an unbounded domain from the outset, addressing the two-dimensional problem of steady self-propulsion with a focus on the limit ${{Pe}}\ll 1$. This singular limit is handled using matched asymptotic expansions, conceptually decomposing the fluid domain into a particle-scale region, where the leading-order solute transport is diffusive, and a remote region, where diffusion and advection are comparable. The expansion parameter is provided by the product of ${{Pe}}$ and $U$, the unknown particle speed (normalised by the standard autophoretic scale). The problem is unconventional in that the scaling of $U$ with ${{Pe}}$ must be determined in the course of the perturbation analysis. The resulting approximation, $U=4\exp ({-2/{Pe}-\gamma _{E}-1})/{{Pe}}$ ($\gamma _{E}$ being the Euler–Mascheroni constant), is in remarkable agreement with the numerical predictions of Hu et al. in the common interval of validity.

Buoyancy-driven turbulent convection leads to a fully compressible flow with a prominent top-down asymmetry of first- and second-order statistics when the adiabatic equilibrium profiles of temperature, density and pressure change very strongly across the convection layer. The growth of this asymmetry and the formation of an increasingly thicker stabilized sublayer with a slightly negative mean convective heat flux $J_c(z)$ at the top of the convection zone is reported here by a series of highly resolved three-dimensional direct numerical simulations beyond the Oberbeck–Boussinesq and anelastic limits for dimensionless dissipation numbers, $0.1 \le D\le 0.8$, at fixed Rayleigh number $Ra=10^6$ and superadiabaticity $\epsilon =0.1$. The highly stratified compressible convection regime appears for $D > D_{crit}\approx 0.65$, when density fluctuations collapse to those of pressure; it is characterized by an up to nearly 50 % reduced global turbulent heat transfer and a sparse network of focused thin and sheet-like thermal plumes falling through the top sublayer deep into the bulk.

The effects of surfactants on a mechanically generated plunging breaker are studied experimentally in a laboratory wave tank. Waves are generated using a dispersively focused wave packet with a characteristic wavelength of $\lambda _0 = 1.18$ m. Experiments are performed with two sets of surfactant solutions. In the first set, increasing amounts of the soluble surfactant Triton X-100 are mixed into the tank water, while in the second set filtered tap water is left undisturbed in the tank for wait times ranging from 15 min to 21 h. Increasing Triton X-100 concentrations and longer wait times lead to surfactant-induced changes in the dynamic properties of the free surface in the tank. It is found that low surface concentrations of surfactants can dramatically change the wave breaking process by changing the shape of the jet and breaking up the entrained air cavity at the time of jet impact. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of plunging breakers with constant surface tension are used to show that there is significant compression of the free surface near the plunging jet tip and dilatation elsewhere. To explore the effect of this compression/dilatation, the surface tension isotherm is measured in all experimental cases. The effects of surfactants on the plunging jet are shown to be primarily controlled by the surface tension gradient ($\Delta \mathcal {E}$) while the ambient surface tension of the undisturbed wave tank ($\sigma _0$) plays a secondary role.

An increased number of rogue waves, relative to standard distributions, can be induced by unidirectional waves passing over abrupt decreases in water depth. We investigate this phenomenon in a more general setting of multidirectional waves. We examine the influence of the directionality on the occurrence probability of rogue waves using laboratory experiments and fully nonlinear potential flow simulations. Based on the analysis of the statistics of random waves, we find that directional spreading reduces the formation probability of rogue waves relative to unidirectional seas. Nevertheless, for typical values of directional spreading in the ocean ($15^{\circ }\unicode{x2013}30^{\circ }$), our numerical results suggest that there is still a significant enhancement to the number of rogue waves just beyond the top of a depth discontinuity.

Separation induced by impinging shock is a fundamental feature in supersonic and hypersonic flows; however, it is difficult to predict the pressure plateau due to a limited theoretical understanding of the effect of impinging shock strength. In this study, the evolution of the separation configuration and pressure distribution with changes in impinging shock angle is examined, and a theoretical equation for predicting the pressure plateau based on minimum entropy production is proposed. For validation, an experimental device that can measure wall pressure in the separation region at high spatiotemporal resolution is developed, and schlieren visualization is employed to capture the flow structure. Accordingly, the fine characteristics of pressure distributions along the centreline of the separation region as well as the reattachment region induced by shock impingement at various angles ($8.5^\circ$ to $30.5^\circ$) are obtained in a flow of Mach number 5 and Reynolds number ${\approx }1.4\times 10^7\ {\rm m}^{-1}$. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical results; both indicate that the pressure distribution is strongly related to the impinging shock strength and that there is a critical flow deflection angle $\alpha ^\ast$ (${\approx }20.8^\circ$ for Mach 5). The pressure in the separation region grows nearly linearly with increasing impinging shock strength when the flow deflection angle of the impinging shock is less than $\alpha ^\ast$; the pressure stops growing and resides in a small range when the flow deflection angle is larger than $\alpha ^\ast$. Therefore, the impinging shock strength should be considered a main factor when predicting the pressure plateau.

We present a theoretical asymptotic solution for high-speed transient flow through microporous media in this work by addressing the inertia effect in the high-pressure-difference pulse-decay process. The capillaric model is adopted, in which a bundle of straight circular tubes with a high length–radius ratio is used to represent the internal flow paths of microporous media so that the flow is described by a simplified incompressible Navier–Stokes equation based on the mean density, capturing the major characteristics of mass flow rate. By order-of-magnitude analysis and asymptotic perturbation, the inertial solution with its dimensionless criterion for the high-pressure-difference pulse-decay process is derived. To be compared with experimental data, the theoretical solution involves all three related effects, including the inertia effect, the slippage effect and the compressibility effect. A self-built experimental platform is therefore established to measure the permeability of microporous media by both pulse-decay and steady-state methods to validate the theoretical solution. The results indicate that the relative difference between two methods is less than 30 % even for permeability at as low as $48.2$ nD $(10^{-21}\,{\rm m}^2)$, and the present theoretical solution can accurately capture the inertia effect in the high-pressure-difference pulse-decay process, which significantly accelerates the measurements for ultra-low-permeability samples.

Natural flyers are capable of producing excessive lift via a stabilized leading-edge vortex (LEV), which appears to linger above the wing for a longer duration than it could in an equivalent two-dimensional flow. Previous studies found this stabilization behaviour closely related to a spanwise flow along the LEV axis; however, it is still debatable how the spanwise flow influences the LEV stability. In this work, potential flow theory is adopted to model an LEV attached to a flat-plate wing. To account for the spanwise flow effect, we propose a finite-area sink (FAS) model which allows the dynamical interaction between co-located LEV and spanwise flow. Through linear stability analysis of the dynamical system associated with the LEV movement, we arrive at a stable spiral-sink type of equilibrium, which is the first mathematical evidence supporting LEV stabilization by spanwise flow. It is further concluded that the LEV stability can be enhanced by either increasing the strength or decreasing the cross-section area of the spanwise flow.

We consider the dynamics of a gravity current of viscous liquid propagating above a dense granular medium that obeys a $\mu (I)$-rheology. Initially, the pool of liquid depresses the granular layer to form levees at its edges. Next, these levees are pushed outwards by the gravity-driven slumping of the liquid, but the levees are not surmounted. In the third stage, the top of the levee is pushed out beyond the rest of the levee. This segregates the liquid into a pond trapped by the remnant of the original levees, and a slowly spreading thin film ahead of the levees. The trapped fraction of liquid depends on the extent of the early granular erosion, which in turn is controlled by the initial shape of the deposit and the yield criterion of the granular layer. The key physical ingredients that lead to such dynamics are inertia-less flow and a lower layer with a yield criterion. The latter gives rise to the all-important levees, which lead to the eventual trapping.

The presence of salt in seawater strongly affects the melt rate and the shape evolution of ice, both of utmost relevance in ice–ocean interactions and thus for the climate. To get a better quantitative understanding of the physical mechanics at play in ice melting in salty water, we numerically investigate the lateral melting of an ice block in stably stratified saline water. The developing ice shape from our numerical results shows good agreement with the experiments and theory from Huppert & Turner (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 100, 1980, pp. 367–384). Furthermore, we find that the melt rate of ice depends non-monotonically on the mean ambient salinity: it first decreases for increasing salt concentration until a local minimum is attained, and then increases again. This non-monotonic behaviour of the ice melt rate is due to the competition among salinity-driven buoyancy, temperature-driven buoyancy and salinity-induced stratification. We develop a theoretical model based on the force balance which gives a prediction of the salt concentration for which the melt rate is minimal, and is consistent with our data. Our findings give insight into the interplay between phase transitions and double-diffusive convective flows.

Attenuation and even freeze-out (amplitude growth stagnation) of the perturbation amplitude growth of a shocked SF$_6$–air interface are first realized in shock-tube experiments through reflected rarefaction waves, which produce reverse baroclinic vorticity offsetting the vorticity deposited by the shock. A theoretical model is constructed to predict the perturbation growth after the impact of rarefaction waves, and seven possibilities of amplitude growth are analysed. Experimentally, a planar air–helium interface is used to produce reflected rarefaction waves. Through changing the perturbation wavelength and the time interval of two impacts, five experiments with specific initial conditions are carried out, and three different possibilities of perturbation growth attenuation are realized.

We derive explicit formulae for the mean profiles of passive scalars (either temperature or concentration of a diffusing substance), and their respective wall fluxes (either heat or mass fluxes), in forced turbulent convection, as a function of the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. Direct numerical simulation data for turbulent flow within a smooth straight pipe of circular cross-section, at friction Reynolds number ${{Re}}_{\tau }=1140$, in the range of Prandtl numbers from ${{Pr}}=0.00625$ to ${{Pr}}=16$, are used to infer the proper analytical form of the eddy diffusivity. This is leveraged to derive accurate predictive formulae for the mean passive scalar profiles, and for the corresponding logarithmic offset function. Asymptotic scaling laws result for the thickness of the conductive (diffusive) layer, and for the Nusselt number, which significantly extend the predictive envelope of classical formulae.

The thermo-osmotic flow (TOF) of an electrolyte solution in a slit channel with a Navier slip condition at the channel walls is studied. An analytical expression for the TOF velocity profile, based on the long-wavelength and Debye–Hückel approximations, is derived and compared to numerical solutions based on the finite-element method. The TOF between graphene surfaces whose charge is created via polarization through an applied electric field is considered as a special case. Using the relationship between the surface charge and the slip length obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, a giant flow amplification is uncovered. Specifically, for such flow in a channel with a width of 10 nm, compared to the flow between no-slip walls, a flow velocity enhancement by a factor of up to 250 is predicted.
