Consider a two-component parallel system. There is a stockpile of n spares, spare i having lifetime Xi, exponentially distributed with rate µi. The system breaks down when neither component functions. Every time a spare expires it has to be replaced, to avoid system breakdown. We investigate the policies which maximize the expected lifetime of the system using these n spares.

Often in the study of reliability and its applications, the goal is to maximize or minimize certain reliability characteristics or some cost functions. For example, burn-in is a procedure used to improve the quality of products before they are used in the field. A natural question which arises is how long the burn-in procedure should last in order to maximize the mean residual life or the conditional survival probability. In the literature, an upper bound for the optimal burn-in time is obtained by assuming that the underlying distribution of the products has a bathtub-shaped failure rate function; however, no lower bound is available. A similar question arises in studying replacement policy, warranty policy, and inspection models. This article gives a lower bound for the optimal burn-in time, and lower and upper bounds for the optimal replacement and warranty policies, under the same bathtub-shape assumption.

The asymptotic behaviour of sequences of Markov processes whose finite distributions depend upon the sample paths ω of a positive recurrent Markov chain ξ is studied. The existence of such sequences depends upon the existence of a unique class of directed weighted circuits having a probabilistic interpretation in terms of the directed circuits occurring along the sample paths of ξ. An application to multiple Markov chains is given.

Consider N sources, each of which transmits signals according to a renewal process with a common, known, underlying distribution. Sequential point estimators for N, which are asymptotically efficient in comparison to the best fixed stopping strategy, are derived. Confidence statements for N, and applications to the problem of estimating finite populations are discussed.

The exact limiting distribution, and moments, of the stopping time we use, which was suggested by Starr, are derived.

A generalisation of the classical general stochastic epidemic within a closed, homogeneously mixing population is considered, in which the infectious periods of infectives follow i.i.d. random variables having an arbitrary but specified distribution. The asymptotic behaviour of the total size distribution for the epidemic as the initial numbers of susceptibles and infectives tend to infinity is investigated by generalising the construction of Sellke and reducing the problem to a boundary crossing problem for sums of independent random variables.

In this paper, transient characteristics related to excursions of the occupation process of M/M/∞ queues are studied, when the excursion level is large and close to the mean offered load. We show that the classical diffusion approximation by an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) process captures well the average values of the transient variables considered, while the asymptotic distributions of these variables depart from those corresponding to the OU process. They exhibit, however, equivalent tail behaviour at infinity and numerical evidence shows that they are amazingly close to each other over the whole half-line.

We further consider a two-dimensional stochastic process of binary variables previously discussed by Galbraith and Walley (1976). A method of estimating properties of the equilibrium distribution is described which considerably extends the region of probability space that can satisfactorily be explored.

In a branching process with random environments, the probability of ultimate extinction is a function of the environment sequence, and is therefore a random variable. Explicit results about the distribution of this random variable are difficult to obtain in general. Here we assume independent and identically distributed environments and use the special properties of fractional linear generating functions to derive some explicit distributions, which may be singular or absolutely continuous, depending on the values of certain parameters. We also consider briefly tail behaviour close to 1, and provide an extension to cases where probability generating functions are not fractional linear.

A classical result for the simple symmetric random walk with 2n steps is that the number of steps above the origin, the time of the last visit to the origin, and the time of the maximum height all have exactly the same distribution and converge when scaled to the arcsine law. Motivated by applications in genomics, we study the distributions of these statistics for the non-Markovian random walk generated from the ascents and descents of a uniform random permutation and a Mallows(q) permutation and show that they have the same asymptotic distributions as for the simple random walk. We also give an unexpected conjecture, along with numerical evidence and a partial proof in special cases, for the result that the number of steps above the origin by step 2n for the uniform permutation generated walk has exactly the same discrete arcsine distribution as for the simple random walk, even though the other statistics for these walks have very different laws. We also give explicit error bounds to the limit theorems using Stein’s method for the arcsine distribution, as well as functional central limit theorems and a strong embedding of the Mallows(q) permutation which is of independent interest.

In this paper we obtain the large deviation principle for scaled queue lengths at a multi-buffered resource, and simplify the corresponding variational problem in the case where the inputs are assumed to be independent.

Quasispecies theory predicts that there is a critical mutation probability above which a viral population will go extinct. Above this threshold the virus loses the ability to replicate the best-adapted genotype, leading to a population composed of low replicating mutants that is eventually doomed. We propose a new branching model that shows that this is not necessarily so. That is, a population composed of ever changing mutants may survive.

Let Si,j denote the joint ith binomial moment of mn(A) and jth binomial moment of mN(B), 0 ≤ i ≤ n, 0 ≤ j ≤ N. For fixed non-negative integers a and b, we establish both lower and upper bounds on the distribution P(mn(A) = r, mN(B) = u) by linear combinations of Si,j, 0 ≤ i ≤ a, 0 ≤ j ≤ b. When both a and b are even, all mentioned S¡,j are utilized in both the upper and the lower bound. In a set of remarks the results are analyzed and their relation to the existing literature, including the univariate case, is discussed.

Extended gamma processes have been seen as a flexible extension of standard gamma processes in the recent reliability literature, for the purpose of cumulative deterioration modeling. The probabilistic properties of the standard gamma process have been well explored since the 1970s, whereas those of its extension remain largely unexplored. In particular, stochastic comparisons between degradation levels modeled by standard gamma processes and ageing properties for the corresponding level-crossing times are now well understood. The aim of this paper is to explore similar properties for extended gamma processes and see which ones can be broadened to this new context. As a by-product, new stochastic comparisons for convolutions of gamma random variables are also obtained.

In ruin theory, the conjecture given in De Vylder and Goovaerts (2000) is an open problem about the comparison of the finite time ruin probability in a homogeneous risk model and the corresponding ruin probability evaluated in the associated model with equalized claim amounts. In this paper we consider a weaker version of the conjecture and show that the integrals of the ruin probabilities with respect to the initial risk reserve are uniformly comparable.

Kipnis and Varadhan (1986) showed that, for an additive functional, Sn say, of a reversible Markov chain, the condition E[Sn2] / n → κ ∈ (0, ∞) implies the convergence of the conditional distribution of Sn / √E[Sn2], given the starting point, to the standard normal distribution. We revisit this question under the weaker condition, E[Sn2] = nl(n), where l is a slowly varying function. It is shown by example that the conditional distributions of Sn / √E[Sn2] need not converge to the standard normal distribution in this case; and sufficient conditions for convergence to a (possibly nonstandard) normal distribution are developed.

The problem we consider here is a full-information best-choice problem in which n applicants appear sequentially, but each applicant refuses an offer independently of other applicants with known fixed probability 0≤q<1. The objective is to maximize the probability of choosing the best available applicant. Two models are distinguished according to when the availability can be ascertained; the availability is ascertained just after the arrival of the applicant (Model 1), whereas the availability can be ascertained only when an offer is made (Model 2). For Model 1, we can obtain the explicit expressions for the optimal stopping rule and the optimal probability for a given n. A remarkable feature of this model is that, asymptotically (i.e. n→∞), the optimal probability becomes insensitive to q and approaches 0.580 164. The planar Poisson process (PPP) model provides more insight into this phenomenon. For Model 2, the optimal stopping rule depends on the past history in a complicated way and seems to be intractable. We have not solved this model for a finite n but derive, via the PPP approach, a lower bound on the asymptotically optimal probability.

In this paper we establish the central limit theorem for a class of stochastic partial differential equations and as an application derive this theorem for two widely studied population models: super-Brownian motion and the Fleming-Viot process.

Consider a financial market in which an agent trades with utility-induced restrictions on wealth. For a utility function which satisfies the condition of reasonable asymptotic elasticity at -∞, we prove that the utility-based superreplication price of an unbounded (but sufficiently integrable) contingent claim is equal to the supremum of its discounted expectations under pricing measures with finite loss-entropy. For an agent whose utility function is unbounded from above, the set of pricing measures with finite loss-entropy can be slightly larger than the set of pricing measures with finite entropy. Indeed, the former set is the closure of the latter under a suitable weak topology. Central to our proof is a proof of the duality between the cone of utility-based superreplicable contingent claims and the cone generated by pricing measures with finite loss-entropy.
