We consider sequences of closed cycles of exponential single-server nodes with a single bottleneck. We study the cycle time and the successive sojourn times of a customer when the population sizes go to infinity. Starting from old results on the mean cycle times under heavy traffic conditions, we prove a central limit theorem for the cycle time distribution. This result is then utilised to prove a weak convergence characteristic of the vector of a customer's successive sojourn times during a cycle for a sequence of networks with population sizes going to infinity. The limiting picture is a composition of a central limit theorem for the bottleneck node and an exponential limit for the unscaled sequences of sojourn times for the nonbottleneck nodes.

Consider a bipartite random geometric graph on the union of two independent homogeneous Poisson point processes in d-space, with distance parameter r and intensities λ and μ. We show for d ≥ 2 that if λ is supercritical for the one-type random geometric graph with distance parameter 2r, there exists μ such that (λ, μ) is supercritical (this was previously known for d = 2). For d = 2, we also consider the restriction of this graph to points in the unit square. Taking μ = τ λ for fixed τ, we give a strong law of large numbers as λ → ∞ for the connectivity threshold of this graph.

We apply Stein's method for probabilistic approximation by a compound geometric distribution, with applications to Markov chain hitting times and sequence patterns. Bounds on our Stein operator are found using a complex analytical approach based on generating functions and Cauchy's formula.

In this paper we propose the asymptotic error distributions of the Euler scheme for a stochastic differential equation driven by Itô semimartingales. Jacod (2004) studied this problem for stochastic differential equations driven by pure jump Lévy processes and obtained quite sharp results. We extend his results to a more general pure jump Itô semimartingale.

We study the optimal liquidation strategy for a call spread in the case when an investor, who does not hedge, believes in a volatility that differs from the implied volatility. The liquidation problem is formulated as an optimal stopping problem, which we solve explicitly. We also provide a sensitivity analysis with respect to the model parameters.

We show that a branching random walk that is supercritical on is also supercritical, in a rather strong sense, when restricted to a large enough finite ball of This implies that the critical value of branching random walks on finite balls converges to the critical value of branching random walks on as the radius increases to infinity. Our main result also implies coexistence of an arbitrary finite number of species for an ecological model.

The recently introduced two-parameter infinitely-many-neutral-alleles model extends the celebrated one-parameter version (which is related to Kingman's distribution) to diffusive two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet frequencies. In this paper we investigate the dynamics driving the species heterogeneity underlying the two-parameter model. First we show that a suitable normalization of the number of species is driven by a critical continuous-state branching process with immigration. Secondly, we provide a finite-dimensional construction of the two-parameter model, obtained by means of a sequence of Feller diffusions of Wright-Fisher flavor which feature finitely many types and inhomogeneous mutation rates. Both results provide insight into the mathematical properties and biological interpretation of the two-parameter model, showing that it is structurally different from the one-parameter case in that the frequency dynamics are driven by state-dependent rather than constant quantities.

We introduce and study the notion of sure profits via flash strategies, consisting of a high-frequency limit of buy-and-hold trading strategies. In a fully general setting, without imposing any semimartingale restriction, we prove that there are no sure profits via flash strategies if and only if asset prices do not exhibit predictable jumps. This result relies on the general theory of processes and provides the most general formulation of the well-known fact that, in an arbitrage-free financial market, asset prices (including dividends) should not exhibit jumps of a predictable direction or magnitude at predictable times. We furthermore show that any price process is always right-continuous in the absence of sure profits. Our results are robust under small transaction costs and imply that, under minimal assumptions, price changes occurring at scheduled dates should only be due to unanticipated information releases.

In the theory of dams with Markovian inputs explicit results are not usually obtained, as the theory depends very heavily on the largest eigenvalue of the matrix (pijzj) where pij are the transition probabilities of the input process. In this paper we show that explicit results can be obtained if one considers an input process of a special form. The probability distribution of the time to first emptiness is obtained for both the finite and the infinite dam, as well as the stationary distribution of the dam content for the finite dam. Explicit results are given for the case where the stationary distribution of the input process has a geometric distribution.

Different Markov chains can be used for approximate sampling of a distribution given by an unnormalized density function with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The hit-and-run, (hybrid) slice sampler, and random walk Metropolis algorithm are popular tools to simulate such Markov chains. We develop a general approach to compare the efficiency of these sampling procedures by the use of a partial ordering of their Markov operators, the covariance ordering. In particular, we show that the hit-and-run and the simple slice sampler are more efficient than a hybrid slice sampler based on hit-and-run, which, itself, is more efficient than a (lazy) random walk Metropolis algorithm.

This paper deals with the first passage optimality and variance minimisation problems of discrete-time Markov decision processes (MDPs) with varying discount factors and unbounded rewards/costs. First, under suitable conditions slightly weaker than those in the previous literature on the standard (infinite horizon) discounted MDPs, we establish the existence and characterisation of the first passage expected-optimal stationary policies. Second, to further distinguish the expected-optimal stationary policies, we introduce the variance minimisation problem, prove that it is equivalent to a new first passage optimality problem of MDPs, and, thus, show the existence of a variance-optimal policy that minimises the variance over the set of all first passage expected-optimal stationary policies. Finally, we use a computable example to illustrate our main results and also to show the difference between the first passage optimality here and the standard discount optimality of MDPs in the previous literature.

Birth and death processes, i.e. Markov chains {X(t)}, 0 ≦ t ≦ ∞, taking values in the set I of non-negative integers, for which the infinitesimal transition probabilities are have found wide application in mathematical ecology . In order that the infinite system of differential Equations (1) should have solutions such that Pij(t) ≦ 0, all t and it is necessary and sufficient that . The conditions ensure that with probability one, the sample paths of X(t) have no discontinuities worse than jumps, and in this case the solution is unique. If (3) does not hold then for some t1 at least, there is a set of sample paths of positive probability, each of which has t1 as a limit point of jumps. For pure birth processes, (in which μj = 0) this clearly implies X(t) → ∞ as t → t1.

If X1, …, Xn obey a multivariate normal distribution with zero means, then the probability that Xi > a for all i = 1, …, n is often called a multivariate normal integral. Such integrals have been considered by various investigators, particularly when a = 0. (For a bibliography, see Gupta.)

We give an efficient method based on minimal deterministic finite automata for computing the exact distribution of the number of occurrences and coverage of clumps (maximal sets of overlapping words) of a collection of words. In addition, we compute probabilities for the number of h-clumps, word groupings where gaps of a maximal length h between occurrences of words are allowed. The method facilitates the computation of p-values for testing procedures. A word is allowed to contain other words of the collection, making the computation more general, but also more difficult. The underlying sequence is assumed to be Markovian of an arbitrary order.

An arbitrary number of competitors are presented with independent Poisson streams of offers consisting of independent and identically distributed random variables having the uniform distribution on [0, 1]. The players each wish to accept a single offer before a known time limit is reached and each aim to maximize the expected value of their offer. Rejected offers may not be recalled, but they are passed on to the other players according to a known transition matrix. This paper finds equilibrium points for two such games, and demonstrates a two-player game with an equilibrium point under which the player with the faster stream of offers has a lower expected reward than his opponent.

We derive the asymptotic behavior of the total, active, and inactive branch lengths of the seed bank coalescent when the initial sample size grows to infinity. These random variables have important applications for populations evolving under some seed bank effects, such as plants and bacteria, and for some cases of structured populations like metapopulations. The proof relies on the analysis of the tree at a stopping time corresponding to the first time a deactivated lineage is reactivated. We also give conditional sampling formulas for the random partition, and we study the system at the time of the first reactivation of a lineage. All these results provide a good picture of the different regimes and behaviors of the block-counting process of the seed bank coalescent.

An expression for the characteristic function of a stationary filtered renewal process with a two-sided impact function is derived, and formulae for the moments are obtained.

An annihilating process is an interacting particle system in which the only interaction is that a particle may kill a neighbouring particle. Since there is no birth and no movement, once a particle has no neighbours its site remains occupied for ever. It is shown that with initial configuration ℤ the distribution of particles at all times is a renewal process and that the probability that a site remains occupied for all time tends to 1/e. Time-dependent behaviour is also calculated for the tree 𝕋r.

We consider a large class of random walks on the discrete circle Z/(n), defined in terms of a piecewise Lipschitz function, and motivated by the ‘generation gap' process of Diaconis. For such walks, we show that the time until convergence to stationarity is bounded independently of n. Our techniques involve Fourier analysis and a comparison of the random walks on Z/(n) with a random walk on the continuous circle S1.

The questions of almost sure convergence of the sequence Xn defined below in (1) as well as that of to a finite limit are settled here. These sequences arise in a simple stochastic model for crop erosion considered by Todorovic and Gani (1987).
