The following new species have been found in material submitted from various sources for identification.

Glyphodes obscura, new species

Head, body and wings above moderately dark greyish brown, wings with a faint purplish sheen, hind wing a little paler and somewhat translucent in basal two-thirds. Markings very obscure. Fore wing above: antemedial band w-eakly fulvous. dark-bordered. somewhat oblique; discocellular patch obscure, quadrate; postmedial band weakly fulvous, dark-bordered, outwardly oblique to anal fold, then retracted to lower angle of cell and again outwardlyoblique to inner margin; an obscure dark subterminal line, almost parallel to margin; a narrow dark terminal line; fringe a little paler than an wing, with a dark midline. Hind wing above: a distinct dark dot at lower angle of cell; a very obscure, regular, postmedial band; traces of a dark, crenulated, subterminal line; terminal lineand fringe as on fore wing. Fore wing beneath: base and disc paler than above; ancerntdial line lacking; discocellular marking dark, geminate, joined posteriorly tn the inner end of postmedial line; the latter dark, roughly L-shaped, the part behind the discocellular patch obsolete; termen and fringe as above. Hind wing beneath: much ns above. but discocellular dot obscure and postmedial band dark, not fulvous. Female a little paler than male. Expanse 40 to 44 mm.

Oxydemeton-methyl, azinphosmethyl, dimethoate, and acephate were evaluated in Douglas-fir seed orchards for control of Douglas-fir cone gall midge, Contarinia oregonensis Foote, and Douglas-fir seed chalcid, Megastigmus spermotrophus Wachtl. Results varied with infestation levels and specific chemicals. There was no significant reduction of infestation levels of either insect with the application of acephate. Oxydemeton-methyl injections, oxydemeton-methyl spray, and dimethoate significantly reduced cone gall midge damage. All four chemicals were ineffective against the seed chalcid for infestations of less than 10% of extractable seed. Oxydemeton-methyl injections, azinphosmethyl, and dimethoate significantly reduced the incidence of seed chalcid when the infestation was high (61%). There was no statistically significant difference (α = 0.05) for pairwise comparisons between chemicals which significantly reduced the infestation levels of either insect.

On the 22nd June, 1901, I received from Mr. A. Kwiat, of Chicago, a batch of eggs of Arctia virguncula, Kirby. These eggs were laid on the 18th June and hatched on the 25th and 26th. The following notes on the early stages of the species were taken. A brief description of the mature larva was published by Mr. Coquillett, in the first number of Papilio, in 1881.

I am by no means certain that flavicornis Sm. can be considered distinct specifically from propinquilinea Grt. Originally described as Demas flavicornis from a New Jersey specimen in the Graef Collection (which should now be in the United States National Museum) it was probably considered distinct from Grote's species, described under Charadra, on generic characters.

Eurytoma vagabunda, n. sp.—♀. Length .10 inch. Deep black. Head and thorax coarsely punctate ; antennæ 8-jointed, black and pubescent; eyes black; thorax black, very coarsely punctate, collare transverse quadrate, parapsidal grooves indistinct, scutellum hardly separated from the praescutellum, convex, narrowing but rounded posteriorly ; metathorax coarsely punctate ; abdonmen black, smooth, and highly polished, peduncle short, a series of very fine punctures along the basal margin of 2nd, 3rd and 4th segments, only perceptible with a high power, tip pubescent ; wings hyaline, iridescent ; veins slightly yellowish, no stigmal spot ; legs reddish yellow, tibiæ slightly paler, feet pale.

The Oriental clusiine genus Phylloclusia Hendel, 1913 is redefined and revised, with four new species (P. hendelisp. nov., P. darlingisp. nov., P. nigroscutellumsp. nov., and P. lanceolasp. nov.) described from Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Phylloclusia is established as the sister genus to the Japanese, Afrotropical, and Australian Tetrameringia McAlpine, 1960 on the basis of newly recognized male and female genitalic synapomorphies. An identification key and illustrations for the six species of Phylloclusia are provided.

Males of Eucosma gloriola Heinrich (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) were caught in pheromone traps for about 5 weeks from 17 May to 21 June in 1996 in three 6-year-old plantations of jack pine, Pinus banksiana Lamb. (Pinaceae), located near Ramsey, Ontario. Peak flight occurred during the first week of June. Pheromone trap catch was greatest about 1 h before and after sunset (2130 hours EDT). Moth flight began when all jack pine pollen cones and vegetative shoots were still under bud scales, and when flights were nearly completed the pollen cones had completed shedding pollen and needle pairs were visible on the new shoots. Pheromone traps placed near the top of trees caught the most males, suggesting that males search for females at tree-top level and that some visual or chemical cue(s) of the host tree may enhance the response of males to pheromone-baited traps.

Weevils of the genus Sitophilus are known to harbour within them certain structures (supposedly micro-organisms) that seem, on present evidence, to supply the host weevil with beneficial but not essential nutrients: the phenomenon of either symbiosis or mutualism.

The micro-organisms occur in cells called “mycetocytes”. In the larval weevil the mycetocytes are clustered together to form a mycetome. During metamorphosis from larva to prepupa to pupa to adult the mycetome breaks up into its constituent mycetocytes. The mycetocytes are found in the midguts of male and female adults and in the gonads of female adults. From the female gonads they are passed to the eggs and thence to the next generation of weevils.

Larvae of Abagrotis orbis (Grote) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are climbing cutworms and can damage grapevines, Vitis vinifera L. (Vitaceae), in early spring by consuming expanding buds. A sex attractant would be useful for monitoring this insect in commercial vineyards. (Z)-7-Tetradecenyl acetate and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate were found in extracts of female abdominal tips. In multiple field experiments, male A. orbis were captured in traps baited with a combination of these two chemicals but not in traps baited with either chemical alone. Males were trapped from mid-September to early October in south-central Washington and south-central British Columbia. Other noctuid moths (Mamestra configurata Walker, Xestia c-nigrum (L.), and Feltia jaculifera (Guenée)) were also captured in traps baited with the A. orbis pheromone and may complicate the use of this lure to monitor A. orbis. Abagrotis discoidalis (Grote) was captured in traps baited with (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate but not in traps baited with the two chemicals together.

Euxoa antica, closely related to Euxoa terrena (Smith), is described from western United States. Adults and genitalia of both species are illustrated.

The form of the palpi is that of Anybia langiella St., as represented Ins. Brit., v.3, but the wings are a little longer than those of langiella are there represented, though the hinder pair have the same form. The neuration of the fore wings is that of L. epilobiella(fig'd loc. cit.) except that the apical vein is obsolete in the single specimen examined by me ; that of the hind wings also resembles that of epilobiella; indeed, if the dorsal and submedian veins were represented in the figure of epilobiella, and the sub-apical or discal branch was produced forwards into the cell,the neuration would be that of this species.

Three new species of fleas are described, two of the family HYSTRICHOPSYLLIDAE Tiraboschi 1904 (Nearctopsylla grahami n. sp. and Rhadinopsylla (Micropsylla) rauschi n. sp.) and one of the family CERATOPHYLLIDAE Dampf 1908 (Ceratophyllus calderwoodi n. sp,). N. grahami is known only from western Ontario where it has been collected from marten, Martes a. americana. R. (M.) rauschi was collected from deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus osgoodi, in southwestern Saskatchewan. C. calderwoodi was collected from a nest of cliff swallow, Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, in eastern New Brunswick.

Female. Frontal profile slightly arcuate, gently sloped, less than equal in length to the facial profile. Clypeus slightly depressed. Vibrissae strong, cruciate, just above the oral margin. Facial ridges bristled on much less than one-half their length.

Outside of pest control reports, little attention has been paid to interior ecosystems in high-latitude regions. Opportunistic sampling of live arthropods captured inside the University of Alaska Museum Fairbanks, Alaska, United States of America allowed us to describe and analyse one such interior ecosystem. We document a minimum of 77 arthropod species over 18 years. Beetles, spiders, and booklice represented 80% of the total abundance. Of those captured, synanthropes consisted primarily of fungivores and detritivores, seasonals consisted primarily of predators and omnivores, and transients consisted primarily of predators and had greater diet and species diversity than the synanthropes and transients. January was the most common month for capturing synanthropes, September for capturing seasonals, and July for capturing transients. Four synanthropic species not previously known from Alaska, which appear to have breeding populations inside the museum, were found: Dorypteryx domestica (Smithers, 1958) (Psocodea: Psyllipsocidae), Cartodere constricta (Gyllenhal, 1827), Dienerella filum (Aubé, 1850), and Corticaria serrata (Paykull 1800) (Coleoptera: Latridiidae). Three transient and one synanthrope species previously unreported from Alaska, with no evidence of breeding populations, were also found: the click beetle Danosoma obtectum (Say, 1839) (Coleoptera: Elateridae), a spider in the genus Phantyna, probably the species P. bicornis (Emerton, 1915) (Araneae: Dictynidae), two Colobopsis sp. ant specimens (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), and the synanthropic spider Oecobius cellariorum (Dugès, 1836) (Araneae: Oecobiidae).

The first-instar larvae of Delia radicum (L.) and Delia antiqua (Meigen) enter host plants to feed in galleries. These galleries can be filled by a liquid resulting from the putrefaction of the host. In this study, we show that D. radicum and D. antiqua larvae have a metapneustic respiratory system in the first instar and an amphipneustic respiratory system in the second instar, as observed in the majority of cyclorrhaphous Diptera. In addition, we observed four spatulate, ramified structures on the postabdominal spiracles in all three larval instars. We propose that these structures facilitate gas exchange (CO2 and O2), especially in the first-instar larvae when they feed in liquid-filled galleries.
