Estimation of the properties of particles embedded in a solid medium via observations on random plane sections is studied. The particular properties considered are those associated with steel inclusions, for example, projected area fraction, total caliper length per unit volume and elongation factor. The approach is general, and with the minimum of assumptions about the particle shape, formulae are obtained for suitable estimators and their variances. Generalised moment relations are derived for the case of given, arbitrary shapes. Estimations of the density of particle centres based upon reciprocal observations are shown to lack robustness to small changes in shape and a more reliable density estimator is discussed. Consideration is given to the case of particles with elliptical profiles and to the use of aggregated results which arise when using automatic scanning equipment. Results are given for the case when there is length-biassing of the intercept distribution due to edge-effects for finite sample areas. Finally, the implication of a positive lower resolution point is discussed.

This paper reviews a variety of results for genealogical (or line-of-descent) processes that arise in connection with the theory of some classical selectively neutral haploid population genetics models. While some new results and derivations are included, the principal aim of the paper is to demonstrate the central importance and simplicity of genealogical Markov chains in this theory. Considerable attention is given to ‘diffusion time scale’ approximations of such genealogical processes. A wide variety of results pertinent to (diffusion approximations of) the classical multi-allele single-locus WrightFisher model and its relatives are unified by this approach. Other examples where the genealogical process plays an explicit role (for example, the infinite-sites models) are discussed.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the maximum interpoint distance of random points in a d-dimensional ellipsoid with a unique major axis. Instead of investigating only a fixed number of n points as n tends to ∞, we consider the much more general setting in which the random points are the supports of appropriately defined Poisson processes. Our main result covers the case of uniformly distributed points.

Large deviation principles and related results are given for a class of Markov chains associated to the ‘leaves' in random recursive trees and preferential attachment random graphs, as well as the ‘cherries’ in Yule trees. In particular, the method of proof, combining analytic and Dupuis–Ellis-type path arguments, allows for an explicit computation of the large deviation pressure.

We consider immigration-branching processes constructable from an inhomogeneous Poisson process, a sequence of population probability distributions, and a homogeneous branching transition function. The set of types is arbitrary, and the process parameter is allowed to be discrete or continuous. For the branching part a weak form of positive regularity, criticality, and the existence of second moments are assumed. Varying the conditions on the immigration law, we obtain several results concerning asymptotic extinction, the rate of extinction, and limiting distribution functions of properly normalized, vector-valued counting processes associated with the immigration branching process. The proofs are based on the generating functional method.

An extension of the class of strict sense stationary processes is studied. The extended class represents the strict sense analogy of an extension of wide sense stationary processes considered in an earlier paper [9]. The relations between the various types of processes defined are investigated in the general and in the Gaussian case, and some examples are given. It is shown that associated with a process belonging to the extended class there is a strict sense stationary process. The associated strict sense stationary process is unique iff the original process is ergodic.

We note some interesting properties of the class of point processes which are Markov with respect to the ‘connected component’ relation. Results in the literature imply that this class is closed under random translation and independent cluster generation with almost surely non-empty clusters. We further prove that it is closed under superposition. A wide range of examples is also given.

In this paper we consider a classic problem concerning the high excursion probabilities of a Gaussian random field f living on a compact set T. We develop efficient computational methods for the tail probabilities ℙ{supTf(t) > b}. For each positive ε, we present Monte Carlo algorithms that run in constant time and compute the probabilities with relative error ε for arbitrarily large b. The efficiency results are applicable to a large class of Hölder continuous Gaussian random fields. Besides computations, the change of measure and its analysis techniques have several theoretical and practical indications in the asymptotic analysis of Gaussian random fields.

We give a finite form for the probability mass function of the wrapped Poisson distribution, together with a probabilistic proof. We also describe briefly its connection with existing results.

We consider a stochastic fluid queue served by a constant rate server and driven by a process which is the local time of a reflected Lévy process. Such a stochastic system can be used as a model in a priority service system, especially when the time scales involved are fast. The input (local time) in our model is typically (but not necessarily) singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure, a situation which, in view of the nonsmooth or bursty nature of several types of Internet traffic, is nowadays quite realistic. We first discuss how to rigorously construct the (necessarily) unique stationary version of the system under some natural stability conditions. We then consider the distribution of performance steady-state characteristics, namely, the buffer content, the idle period, and the busy period. These derivations are much based on the fact that the inverse of the local time of a Markov process is a Lévy process (a subordinator), hence making the theory of Lévy processes applicable. Another important ingredient in our approach is the use of Palm calculus for stationary random point processes and measures.

In this paper, we study the stationary distributions for reflected diffusions with jumps in the positive orthant. Under the assumption that the stationary distribution possesses a density in R+n that satisfies certain finiteness conditions, we characterize the Fokker-Planck equation. We then provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a product-form distribution for diffusions with oblique boundary reflections and jumps. To do so, we exploit a recent characterization of the boundary properties of such reflected processes. In particular, we show that the conditions generalize those for semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions and reflected Lévy processes. We provide explicit results for some models of interest.

When the search algorithm QuickSelect compares keys during its execution in order to find a key of target rank, it must operate on the keys' representations or internal structures, which were ignored by the previous studies that quantified the execution cost for the algorithm in terms of the number of required key comparisons. In this paper we analyze running costs for the algorithm that take into account not only the number of key comparisons, but also the cost of each key comparison. We suppose that keys are represented as sequences of symbols generated by various probabilistic sources and that QuickSelect operates on individual symbols in order to find the target key. We identify limiting distributions for the costs, and derive integral and series expressions for the expectations of the limiting distributions. These expressions are used to recapture previously obtained results on the number of key comparisons required by the algorithm.

We study a multiclass Markovian queueing network with switchover across a set of many-server stations. New arrivals to each station follow a nonstationary Poisson process. Each job waiting in queue may, after some exponentially distributed patience time, switch over to another station or leave the network following a probabilistic and state-dependent mechanism. We analyze the performance of such networks under the many-server heavy-traffic limiting regimes, including the critically loaded quality-and-efficiency-driven (QED) regime, and the overloaded efficiency-driven (ED) regime. We also study the limits corresponding to mixing the underloaded quality-driven (QD) regime with the QED and ED regimes. We establish fluid and diffusion limits of the queue-length processes in all regimes. The fluid limits are characterized by ordinary differential equations. The diffusion limits are characterized by stochastic differential equations, with a piecewise-linear drift term and a constant (QED) or time-varying (ED) covariance matrix. We investigate the load balancing effect of switchover in the mixed regimes, demonstrating the migration of workload from overloaded stations to underloaded stations and quantifying the load balancing impact of switchover probabilities.

‘Small worlds’ are large systems in which any given node has only a few connections to other points, but possessing the property that all pairs of points are connected by a short path, typically logarithmic in the number of nodes. The use of random walks for sampling a uniform element from a large state space is by now a classical technique; to prove that such a technique works for a given network, a bound on the mixing time is required. However, little detailed information is known about the behaviour of random walks on small-world networks, though many predictions can be found in the physics literature. The principal contribution of this paper is to show that for a famous small-world random graph model known as the Newman-Watts small-world model, the mixing time is of order log2n. This confirms a prediction of Richard Durrett [5, page 22], who proved a lower bound of order log2n and an upper bound of order log3n.

The Doss-Sussmann (DS) approach is used for uniform simulation of the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR) process. The DS formalism allows us to express trajectories of the CIR process through solutions of some ordinary differential equation (ODE) depending on realizations of a Wiener process involved. By simulating the first-passage times of the increments of the Wiener process to the boundary of an interval and solving the ODE, we uniformly approximate the trajectories of the CIR process. In this respect special attention is payed to simulation of trajectories near 0. From a conceptual point of view the proposed method gives a better quality of approximation (from a pathwise point of view) than standard, even exact, simulation of the stochastic differential equation at some deterministic time grid.

This paper presents the large-buffer asymptotics for a multiplexer which serves N types of heterogeneous sessions which have long-tailed session lengths. Specifically, the model considered is that sessions of type i ∈ {1,…,N} arrive as a Poisson process with rate λi. Each type of session (independently) remains active for a random duration, say τi, where P(τi > x) ~ αix-(1 + βi) for positive numbers αi and βi. While active, a session transmits at a rate ri. Under the assumption that the average load ρ = ∑Ni=1riλiE[τi] < C, where C denotes the server capacity, we show that both the tail distribution of the stationary buffer content and the loss asymptotics in finite buffers of size z behave approximately as z-κJ0, where κJ0 depends not only on the βi but also on the transmission rates ri; it is the ratio of βi to ri which determines κJ0. When specialized to the homogeneous case, i.e., when ri=r and βi = β for all i, the result coincides with results reported in the literature which have been shown under more restrictive hypotheses. Finally, it is a simple observation that light-tailed sessions only have the effect of reducing the available capacity for long-tailed sessions, but do not contribute otherwise to the definition of κJ0.

An urn contains balls of different colours, which are randomly drawn one at a time. After each draw the number of balls in the urn with the same colour as the ball last drawn is changed. Special cases are sampling with and without replacement, and Pólya sampling. The drawing stops when a given number of colours has been drawn a given number of times. The number of times the different colours have been drawn is studied in this paper by imbedding the urn scheme in birth processes. Both exact and asymptotic results are obtained. In particular, waiting times for sampling with and without replacement and for Pólya sampling are considered.

A single machine is available to process a collection of stochastic jobs preemptively. Rewards are received at job completions. We seek policies for machine allocation which maximize the total reward. Application areas point to the need to study such models for resource allocation when job processing requirements are dependent. To this end, models are developed in which the nature of such dependence is derived from various notions of positive and negative dependence in common usage in reliability. Optimal policies for resource allocation of simple structure are obtained for a variety of such models.
