In this study we examine the population biology of Brueelia apiastri, a chewing louse living on the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster). We investigate the relationships between parasite intensity of infestation, sex ratio, reproductive output, parasite size and their environment i.e. the morphology, condition, age and sex of the host. Chewing lice were collected, their sex and age (developmental stage) identified and parasite body size determined as a measure of parasite condition (larger individuals consume larger meals and larger females may produce larger clutches). The data show that there is variation in intensity as well as body size of B. apiastri between individual bee-eaters and this variation is independent of the sex of the birds. However, size, condition and age of the birds seem to influence the infestation rates with B. apiastri. The study suggested size-dependent depredation, since more, smaller chewing lice (usually nymphs) living on birds in better condition and birds having longer bills. Furthermore, more male chewing lice (males are smaller than females) live on older birds. Intraspecific competition between parasites seems to have a negative effect on female but not male body size but this result could be also explained by size-dependent depredation.

1. Different extracts of adult worms of S. mansoni and F. hepatica have been examined in the C.F.T. for bilharziasis. Extracts of S. mansoni worms in Coca's solution, alcohol-ether and absolute alcohol after acetone extraction possess high antigenic activity, the first being the most specific but less sensitive than the others. Extracts in Coca's solution of alcohol-ether insoluble residues still showed slight activity while acetone and polysaccharide (formamide) extracts showed none.

2. Using the Coca's extract of S. mansoni worms, the C.F.T. was positive in 83% of sera of untreated patients and 58% of treated. The figures using the alcohol-ether extract were 13 and 4% respectively and, for the alcoholic extract of acetone insoluble residue, 42 and 13%.

3. Extracts of F. hepatica worms showed the same general trend, but even in the two extracts to show activity (alcohol-ether and alcohol extract of acetone insoluble material) the titre was too low for use in the test.

4. Of rabbits immunized with three different fractions of S. mansoni worms only that given the Coca extract showed complement-fixing antibodies and then only with the homologous antigen. Skin tests on the rabbits were negative to each of the antigens used.

5. The nature of the antigen in the C.F.T. is discussed, and it is suggested that the active portion is lipo-protein in nature or more than one substance is involved. For use in clinical diagnosis, an extract of S. mansoni worms in Coca's solution is recommended.

The rickettsial bacterium Ehrlichia ruminantium is the causative agent of heartwater, a serious tick-borne disease in ruminants. The genetic diversity of organisms in the field will have implications for cross-protective capacities of any vaccine developed, and for an effective vaccine design strategy proper genotyping and understanding of existing genetic diversity in the field is necessary. We searched for variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) loci for use in a multi-locus VNTR analysis (MLVA). Sequencing analysis of 30 potential VNTRs using a panel of 17 reference strains from geographically diverse origins identified 12 VNTRs with allelic profiles differing between strains. Application of MLVA to 38 E. ruminantium-infected Amblyomma variegatum collected from indigenous cattle in 6 different districts of Uganda identified 21 MLVA types. The discriminatory power of MLVA was greater than that of map1 PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, with which only 6 genotypes were obtained. The high discriminatory power as well as cost- effective performance of MLVA provide the potential for this technique to be applied in the future with respect to optimizing vaccine trials by identifying local strain diversity, and also raise the possibility of exploring the association between E. ruminantium genotypes and phenotypes such as pathological outcome in the ruminant host.

The survival, growth and development of Onchocerca lienalis 3rd-stage (L3) larvae implanted into mice within micropore chambers has been studied with a view to developing a vaccination model for studies of protective immunity in onchocerciasis. The influence of host genetics on worm recoveries and development (growth and moulting rate) was analysed in a panel of inbred mice (CBA, BALB/c, DBA/2, SJL, 129J, C57BL/10 (B10), C3H/He and NIH), together with mice of BALB and B10 backgrounds with different major histocompatibility complex (H-2) genes (BALB/c, BALB.K, BALB.B and B10, B10.D2/n, B10.BR, B10.S). Parasite recoveries and development were similar in all mouse genotypes tested. They were unaffected by procedures designed to block or modulate phagocytic cell function with carbon or carrageenan, or to suppress inflammation by treatment with hydrocortisone acetate. A comparison of chambers sealed with membranes designed to admit (5·0 μm pore size) or exclude (0·2 μm pore size) host cells demonstrated no effect on the percentage recovery of living larvae, although dead larvae were more frequently retrieved when cells were excluded. Recoveries and rates of development of larvae implanted into immunodeficient scid mice and athymic Hooded rats were similar to those recorded in immunocompetent controls. We conclude that host genetic factors and immunocompetence are not significant determinants of survival, growth or development of O. lienalis larvae implanted within micropore chambers into naive mice. Despite its limitations, the use of this system merits further investigation as an approach to the study of protective immunity against developing larvae in onchocerciasis.

The diagnosis of the genus Polycliphora gen. nov. is based on the large number of haptoral clamps and on their skeleton. The systematic position of the parasite is discussed. Among the Diclidophoridae, Polycliphora nezumiae gen. et sp. nov., becomes the type of a new sub-family.

Fragmented habitats generally harbour small populations that are potentially more prone to local extinctions caused by biotic factors such as parasites. We evaluated the effects of botflies (Cuterebra apicalis) on naturally fragmented populations of the gracile mouse opossum (Gracilinanus agilis). We examined how sex, food supplementation experiment, season and daily climatic variables affected body condition and haemoglobin concentration in animals that were parasitized or not by botflies. Although parasitism did not affect body condition, haemoglobin concentrations were lower in parasitized animals. Among the non-parasitized individuals, haemoglobin concentration increased with the increase of maximum temperature and the decrease of relative humidity, a climatic pattern found at the peak of the dry season. However, among parasitized animals, the opposite relationship between haemoglobin concentration and relative humidity occurred, as a consequence of parasite-induced anaemia interacting with dehydration as an additional stressor. We conclude that it is critical to assess how climate affects animal health (through blood parameters) to understand the population consequences of parasitism on the survival of individuals and hence of small population viability.

Hubei Province is one of the endemic regions with severe schistosomiasis in China. To eliminate schistosomiasis in lake and marshland regions, this study detected hotspots of schistosomiasis cases both spatially and spatiotemporally on the basis of spatial autocorrelation; clustering and outlier, purely spatial and spatiotemporal cluster analyses at the village level from 2013 to 2017 in Hubei Province. The number of cases confirmed positive by an immunodiagnostic test and etiological diagnosis and advanced schistosomiasis cases dramatically declined during the study period. Significant global spatial autocorrelation of schistosomiasis patients was found at the village level in the whole province in 5 years. Clustering and outlier analysis showed that most HH villages were mainly concentrated along the Yangtze River, especially in Jianghan Plain. Spatial and spatiotemporal cluster analyses showed that significant clusters of the schistosomiasis cases were detected at the village level. In general, space and spatiotemporal clustering of schistosomiasis cases at the village level demonstrated a downward trend from 2013 from 2017 in Hubei Province. High-risk regions included Jianghan Plain along the middle reach of Yangtze River and Yangxin County in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in Hubei Province. To eliminate schistosomiasis, precise control and management of schistosomiasis cases should be strictly implemented. Moreover, comprehensive prevention and control measures should be continuously strengthened in these regions.

In this study, a microsporidian pathogen of the date moth (Apomyelois (Ectomyelois) ceratoniae, Zeller, 1839) also known as the carob moth, is described based on light microscopy, ultrastructural characteristics and comparative molecular analysis. The pathogen infects the gut and hemolymph of A. ceratoniae. All development stages are in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Fresh spores with nuclei arranged in a diplokaryon are oval and measured 3.29 ± 0.23 μm (4.18–3.03 μm, n = 200) in length and 1.91 ± 0.23 μm (2.98–1.66 μm, n = 200) in width. Spores stained with Giemsa's stain measured 3.11 ± 0.31 μm (3.72–2.41 μm, n = 150) in length and 1.76 ± 0.23 μm (2.16–1.25 μm, n = 150) in width. Spores have an isofilar polar filament with 10-12 coils. An 1110 bp long alignment of the current microsporidium showed an SSU rRNA gene difference of only 0.0009, corresponding to >99.91% sequence similarity with Nosema fumiferanae, while RPB1 gene sequences were 98.03% similar within an alignment of 969 bp. All morphological, ultrastructural and molecular features indicate that the microsporidian pathogen of A. ceratoniae is the new isolate of the N. fumiferanae and is named here as Nosema fumiferanae TY61.

Previous work has highlighted increased opportunities for the transmission of Syngamus trachea within pheasant release pens, due in part to high levels of environmental contamination around communal areas. Despite this, the distribution of adult worms within their definitive hosts is not significantly different from predicted distributions under Taylor's power law. Therefore, density-dependent processes are probably acting to regulate S. trachea population dynamics. Patterns of nematode fecundity were investigated in a semi-naturally occurring population of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) and a wild population of carrion crows (Corvus carone). Worm length was a reliable indicator of nematode fecundity, and a negative association between mean worm length and mean worm burden was identified within both the species. The stunting of worms at greater parasite densities was present in both immunologically naïve and previously exposed pheasants, so is unlikely to be a function of age-dependent acquired immunity. Interestingly, the effect of parasite crowding in the crow population explained more of the variation in mean worm length, apparently driven by a greater mean worm burden when compared with pheasants. The findings of the present study suggest that fecundity is a function of parasite density, i.e. parasite-mediated competition and not host-mediated heterogeneities in immunocompetence.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, which can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans, leading to toxoplasmosis. Currently, the effective treatment for human toxoplasmosis is the combination of sulphadiazine and pyrimethamine. However, both drugs have serious side-effects and toxicity in the host. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the discovery of new anti-T. gondii drugs with high potency and less or no side-effects. Our findings suggest that lumefantrine exerts activity against T. gondii by inhibiting its proliferation in Vero cells in vitro without being toxic to Vero cells (P ≤ 0.01). Lumefantrine prolonged mice infected with T. gondii from death for 3 days at the concentration of 50 μg L−1 than negative control (phosphate-buffered saline treated only), and reduced the parasite burden in mouse tissues in vivo (P ≤ 0.01; P ≤ 0.05). In addition, a significant increase in interferon gamma (IFN-γ) production was observed in high-dose lumefantrine-treated mice (P ≤ 0.01), whereas interleukin 10 (IL-10) and IL-4 levels increased in low-dose lumefantrine-treated mice (P ≤ 0.01). The results demonstrated that lumefantrine may be a promising agent to treat toxoplasmosis, and more experiments on the protective mechanism of lumefantrine should be undertaken in further studies.

A simple mathematical model of the dynamics of malaria invasion is proposed. The model is based on the hypothesis that replication slippage (slipped strand mispairing occurring in replicating DNAs), likely to take place within regular, low-complexity, regions of the plasmodium genome, is a significant mechanism of the ability for the parasite to escape the host immune defence. The model reconciles the conclusions of other formal approaches like periodic bursts of parasitaemia and, in particular, it predicts that antibody cross-reactivity affects the level and the time profile of malaria recrudescence. It also suggests that an efficient strategy for the parasite to escape host humoral immune defences is to express a single antigen. Linking local complexity to antigenic variability tentatively allows prediction of new potentially immunogenic sequences in the plasmodium genome.

Red blood cells from rats were labelled with 51Cr by in vitro incubation with labelled sodium chromate. After re-injection of autologous labelled red cells, rats, each infected with 5000 N. brasiliensis larvae, and non-infected controls were placed in individual metabolism cages. Twenty-four hour samples of faeces and urine from both groups were collected throughout the course of the infection. From a knowledge of the specific radioactivity of host blood, it was possible to express the radioactivity found in the faeces and urine in terms of volume of whole blood. A burden of approximately 1000 adult worms caused a blood loss of about 100 μl every 24 h during the period day 4 to day 14 after infection. This gastro-intestinal haemorrhage could provide a vehicle whereby antibody gains access to the worm. No radioactivity was found in adult worms isolated from infected rats killed at 2-day intervals throughout the course of the infection. Adult N. brasiliensis did not ingest an appreciable quantity of host blood.

Males of Nematodirus battus have a body wall composed of a longitudinally ridged cuticle made up of 8 layers, a hypodermis and a layer of longitudinal muscle cells which are divided into 4 sectors by the hypodermal cords. There is a characteristic cephalic inflation of the cuticle in both sexes. The structure of the body wall in the anterior half of the female is similar to that of the male. In the posterior half of the female the cuticle is not ridged and has 7 layers; the longitudinal muscles are reduced in number and the lateral hypodermal cords increasingly extend dorsally and ventrally along the length of the posterior part of the nematode and come to occupy most of the lateral sectors of the body. The possible significance of these modifications in the structure of the female nematode are discussed.

Turning sickness of cattle, a very fatal disease, long known in tropical East Africa, is characterised by circling or turning movements made by the affected animals. Recent observations prove that the malady occurs sporadically throughout Uganda and in the greater part of Kenya and Tanganyika where East Coast Fever is highly enzootic. It appears to occur mostly in hot dry periods of the year.

The material of the species to be described was found in a small collection of parasites from Zanzibar, placed at my disposal by Professor G. H. F. Nuttall, F.R.S., to whom I wish to express my thanks. As only a few cestodes have hitherto been recorded from East Africa and its helminth fauna is therefore largely unknown, a list of the forms identified is given at the end of the paper. I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Birmingham Natural History and Philosophical Society for a grant towards the expense of preparing the plates, both in this and the preceding paper (Parasitology, XIII. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx; EC 1.11.1.9) is an important antioxidant enzyme that catalyses the reduction of organic and inorganic hydroperoxides to water in oxygen-consuming organisms, using glutathione as an electron donor. Here, we report the characterization of a GPx of Cryptosporidium parvum (CpGPx). CpGPx contained a standard UGU codon for cysteine instead of a UGA opal codon for seleno-cysteine (SeCys) at the active site, and no SeCys insertion sequence (SECIS) motif was identified within the 3′-untranslated region (UTR) of CpGPx, which suggested its selenium-independent nature. In silico and biochemical analyses indicated that CpGPx is a cytosolic protein with a monomeric structure. Recombinant CpGPx was active over a wide pH range and was stable under physiological conditions. It showed a substrate preference against organic hydroperoxides, such as cumene hydroperoxide and t-butyl hydroperoxide, but it also showed activity against inorganic hydroperoxide, hydrogen peroxide. Recombinant CpGPx was not inhibited by potassium cyanide or by sodium azide. The enzyme effectively protected DNA and protein from oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide, and was functionally expressed in various developmental stages of C. parvum. These results collectively suggest the essential role of CpGPx for the parasite's antioxidant defence system.

Specimens of Stylops advarians were sampled by collecting foraging bees of Andrena milwaukeensis along the South Saskatchewan River within Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As the foraging season progressed from early May till late June over three consecutive years (2016–2018), most stylopized bees possessed endoparasitic adult (neotenic) females of S. advarians protruding from the bee gaster's dorsum. In contrast, very few adult bees stylopized by male puparia, and no free-living males, were encountered. Over the sampling period, prevalence remained around 22% each year; mean intensity was 1.2 (range of 1–3 female parasites per bee); and parasite abundance was 0.27. Also newly reported for Stylops is the occurrence of one bee bearing four Stylops (two neotenic females and two males with puparia), plus another bee with a male puparium extruded from its gaster's sternites. Around 2 May each year, a high proportion of the earliest captured female bees were stylopized. However, non-stylopized female bees typically were not encountered until about 10 days later, suggesting the parasites manipulate female bee hosts to emerge earlier, in close synchrony to male bee emergence. First-instar larvae of S. advarians appeared from 22–25 May, indicating that adults of S. advarians matured and mated at similar times each season.

Viktorocara acholonui sp.nov. is described from a babbler, Alcippe brunnea, from Taiwan. It differs from V. charadrii Belopolskaja, 1959, and V. guschanscoi Leonov, 1958, in having a longer pharynx and in shape of tip of left spicule, and from V. tenuis (Maplestone, 1932) in having 6 rather than 10–13 pairs of preanal papillae.

Smetaleksenema gen.nov. is proposed for Skrjabinobronema pileati Smetanina et Alekseev, 1968, which becomes Smetaleksenema pileati (Smetanina et Alekseev, 1968), comb.nov. It differs from Ancyracanthopsis Diesing, 1861, in having serrated cephalic processes. The species is redescribed.

Ornithostrongylus vetterlingi sp.nov. is described from emerald doves, Chalcophaps indica, from Borneo and Palawan. It differs from all other species in the shape of the gubernaculum and in possessing a striated, common spicule sheath which binds the spicules tightly together.
