Pre-natal infection of Schistosoma japonicum in pigs may prove to be a useful model in shedding light on human pre-natal schistosomiasis. This study describes the effects of immune colostrum on worm burdens, tissue egg counts, liver pathology and crude worm or egg antigen-specific IgG and IgA responses, in groups of pigs pre-natally, pre-natally+post-natally or post-natally exposed to S. japonicum. Results suggest that pre-natal exposure and immune colostrum did not affect the establishment of a post-natal challenge infection. However, immune colostrum seemed to increase the levels of septal fibrosis in pre-natally exposed pigs. These findings indicate that further investigations will prove valuable, elucidating the influence of the parasitological and immunological status of the sow, on pre-natally exposed pigs, and on the ability of these pigs to develop resistance against S. japonicum later in life.

Host specificity of a siphonostome copepod Ophiopsyllus reductus was confirmed by the results of an extensive survey of co-existing possible alternate host brittlestars. The parasite was found only on Ophiocomella ophiactoides. The ability to discriminate between potential hosts was tested experimentally. O. ophiactoides was always preferred and, in experiments with unrelated alternative hosts, the discrimination was absolute. When closely related species were the alternate host, discrimination was less complete. It is suggested that the discrimination is due to recognition of either tactile or chemical characteristics of the preferred host.

Iron is an essential element for the survival of trichomonads during host–parasite interaction. The availability of this metal modulates several metabolic pathways of the parasites and regulates the expression of virulence factors such as adhesins and proteolytic enzymes. In this study, we investigated the effect of iron depletion on the morphology and life cycle of Tritrichomonas foetus. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that depletion of iron from the culture medium (named TYM-DIP inducer medium) induces morphological transformation of typical pear-shaped trophozoites into spherical and non-motile pseudocysts. Remarkably, inoculation of pseudocysts into an iron-rich medium (standard TYM medium), or addition of FeSO4 to a TYM-DIP inducer medium reverted the morphological transformation process and typical trophozoites were recovered. These results show that pseudocysts are viable forms of the parasite and highlight the role of iron as a modulator of the parasite phenotype. Although iron is required for the survival of T. foetus, iron depletion does not cause a cellular collapse of pseudocysts, but instead induces phenotypic alterations, probably in order to allow the parasite to survive conditions of nutritional stress. Together, these findings support previous studies that suggest pseudocysts are a resistance form in the life cycle of T. foetus and enable new approaches to understanding the multifactorial role of iron in the cell biology of this protozoan parasite.

Parasite-mediated apparent competition occurs when one species affects another through the action of a shared parasite. One way of controlling the parasite in the more susceptible host is to manage the reservoir host. Culling can cause issues in terms of ethics and biodiversity impacts, therefore we ask: can treating, as compared to culling, a wildlife host protect a target species from the shared parasite? We used Susceptible Infected Recovered (SIR) models parameterized for the tick-borne louping ill virus (LIV) system. Deer are the key hosts of the vector (Ixodes ricinus) that transmits LIV to red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus, causing high mortality. The model was run under scenarios of varying acaricide efficacy and deer densities. The model predicted that treating deer can increase grouse density through controlling ticks and LIV, if acaricide efficacies are high and deer densities low. Comparing deer treated with 70% acaricide efficacy with a 70% cull rate suggested that treatment may be more effective than culling if initial deer densities are high. Our results will help inform tick control policies, optimize the targeting of control methods and identify conditions where host management is most likely to succeed. Our approach is applicable to other host-vector-pathogen systems.

Antigenic variation is a powerful survival strategy adapted by certain species of parasitic protozoa to allow them to survive in the immunized host. It is exemplified by the African trypanosomes, which provide far and away the best characterized and most studied system of this kind. Why have the trypanosomes developed antigenic variation to such a sophisticated level? Because the trypanosome lives its life in the bloodstream of its mammalian host and is therefore in continuous conflict with the host's immune system. Antigenic variation represents its whole survival strategy, with some help provided by its ability to immunosuppress the host. The importance of antigenic variation to the trypanosome is underscored by the estimate that up to 10% of the trypanosome genome may be devoted to variant antigen genes (Van der Ploeg et al. 1982). Most other parasitic protozoa prefer a less confrontational existence and usually adopt an intracellular home for at least a part of their life-cycle within the mammalian host. That being the case, do other parasitic protozoa need antigenic variation within their armorarium ? The answer seems to be yes, although the reasons why are by no means clear. For example, the stages in the life-cycle which exhibit antigenic variation might be expected to be those which are released free into the bloodstream – in malaria, sporozoites and merozoites, for example. Yet there seems to be no evidence for phenotypic variation at all in these stages. Rather, it is the intracellular stages which, in both Plasmodium and Babesia, seem to elaborate molecules which are expressed at the surface of the parasitized cell, and which are capable of both eliciting an immune response and of avoiding the con- sequences of such a response by phenotypic antigenic variation. Why are such antigens expressed, and what is their functional significance?

The male and female of Rhipicephalus reichenowi are re-described and the nymph and larva are described for the first time. The affinities of the species within the genus are discussed.

Its developmental periods under laboratory conditions are given and all known records of its hosts and distribution in the field are noted.

An anthelmintic test was carried out in lambs against fourth-stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus to determine whether a natural loss of worms from either untreated control animals or from animals treated with anthelmintic affected the estimated activity of the anthelmintic.

Thirty-two lambs were each infected with 1500 larvae of H. contortus on 4 consecutive days and divided into 4 groups of 8 animals. Two groups of lambs were treated with anthelmintic on day 7, the first group being slaughtered on day 9 and the second on day 29. An untreated control group was slaughtered 7 days after infection and a second control group was killed 29 days after infection.

The numbers of worms recovered indicated that in the untreated control lambs there was an estimated daily loss of about 7% of the parasite population between the first day of infection and day 29, and in the lambs given anthelmintic an estimated daily loss of about 2% of the worm population was indicated between days 9 and 29. If the rate of worm loss is not the same in the untreated control hosts and in the treated animals, the estimate of anthelmintic efficacy will vary according to the time of autopsy. To minimize the possibility of an incorrect result occurring in an anthelmintic trial due to a natural loss of worms, it is recommended that the untreated control and the treated lambs are slaughtered on the same day, and that the autopsy is carried out as soon as possible after anthelmintic therapy.

Definition. Oxyurinae—mouth with three small lips; cuticle with or without lateral flanges; vestibule absent; oesophagus with a posterior globular bulb containing a valvular apparatus and separated from the rest of the oesophagus by a slight constriction; excretory pore behind the oesophageal bulb; posterior extremity of the body in both sexes obliquely truncate ventrally at the level of the anus, rounded and prolonged as a long subulate tail which is provided with spines or smooth.

This review highlights published research on the principal entomogenous nematodes that have potential as biological control agents of insects. The life-cycles and status of promising members of the families Allantonematidae, Diplogasteridae, Heterorhabditidae, Mermithidae, Neotylenchidae, Rhabditidae, Sphaerulariidae, Steinernematidae and Tetradonematidae are discussed. Emphasis is placed on attempts to control insect populations with these nematodes. Mass propagation of the Steinernematidae and Mermithidae are also discussed, including current in vivo and in vitro rearing systems. A number of these nematodes show promise as biological control agents but commercial development has been slow because of environmental limitations, host specificity and inherent problems associated with manipulation of living organisms. Although some of these nematodes have been considered for commercial preparation, it appears that they will remain ‘on the shelf’ until the need for such biological control provides small businesses with the incentive to make them available for general use.

The object of this paper is the description of a dipterous larva based on the study of six specimens of larvae obtained by Mr R. A. Phillips from living specimens of the snail Vertigo genesii Gredler which he had caught at Cloanascragh Bog, near Taum, Co. Galway. Three larvae were received in October 1933 through Prof. Boycott, and three in September 1936 directly from Mr Phillips. In a letter accompanying the specimens Prof. Boycott makes the following remark:

“Considering that the whole snail shell is only about 2 mm. × 1 mm. the larvae seem very big.” In fact some of the shells are distinctly smaller than the adult larvae, which when mounted are 2·0–5·0 mm. long, and 0·3–1·5 mm. in diameter.

Evidence is presented of a periodicity of oogenesis and spermatogenesis in D. aegira. Pauses in oogenesis were detected between successions of oogonial divisions; in spermatogenesis, the intervals appeared to be longer and the pauses came before division of primary spermatocytes. Regulation of division rates was such that between two and three times as many spermatozoa as oocytes were produced.

Observations indicated that spermatozoa emerged from the axial cell soon after their formation and made contact with oocytes early, often before these were fully grown. Properties of the oocyte cell membrane evidently precluded precocious sperm entry and the penetration of more than one spermatozoon.

The consensus view of biomembrane structure is outlined. The present model is built upon a fluid lipid matrix, usually two molecules in length, into which the proteins are embedded. The lipid bilayer organization is discussed, such as their phase transition and fluid character and the effect of cholesterol upon the chain organization. The non-lamellar arrangement which some lipids adopt is described. The use of new physical techniques for obtaining information about the structure and dynamics of membrane proteins are described. These techniques include electron diffraction, electron microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. Models of the structures of the Ca2+–ATPase and the glucose transporter from erythrocytes are shown, indicating the putative helices embedded in the lipid bilayer and the groups of amino acids in the aqueous environment. These models are based upon biochemical methods to obtain amino acid sequences using DNA cloning techniques. Finally, an experimental method using triplet probes is described for the study of the rotational dynamics of membrane proteins. Labelled monoclonal antibodies for studying the dynamics of the glucose transporter have been used.

The following case of Intestinal Myiasis occurred in a boy about twelve years of age, in normal health, who brought to me in September 1909 what he took to be “worms” discharged with his faeces. He said he did not feel anything abnormal but saw a mass of the creatures upon and in his freshly-voided faeces. He called his mother, and she stated to me afterwards that the “worms were in a cluster like a swarm of bees,” they were crawling about the faecal mass which was loose in character, as had been the case for several days. They varied considerably in size, as did the specimens brought to me. The mass of creatures would have filled one or two tablespoons.

A method is described for producing unisexual infections of N. brasiliensis in rats; this method was used primarily to obtain populations of virgin adult females. Experiments were carried out in which male worms were introduced to virgin females in the rat small intestine. The worms were recovered after periods varying from 30 min to 22 h and the females were examined for fertile egg production or other evidence of insemination.

In some experiments a few females were inseminated within 30 min of being mixed with males, but for reliable results a period of over 1 h was necessary. Sperm were first deposited along the ventral wall of the vagina and there was evidence that a single insemination could fill the vagina. After 4·5 h the majority of females had been inseminated and this period was long enough for sperm to reach the seminal receptacle in one female. A minority of females had a few fertile eggs in the uterus by 5·5 h, and fertile eggs were being passed by 6·0 h after the introduction of males.

Small numbers of males were introduced to an excess of virgin females in order to obtain information on the sexual capacity of males. These experiments indicated that males could, on average, fertilize one female every 2 h during the first 15–20 h. This potential was shown to be greatly in excess of the minimum requirements for maintaining the maximum fertile egg output of females in normal infections.
