Wave turbulence provides a conceptual framework for weakly nonlinear interactions in dispersive media. Dating from five decades ago, applications of wave turbulence theory to oceanic internal waves assigned a leading-order role to interactions characterized by a near equivalence between the group velocity of high-frequency internal waves with the phase velocity of near-inertial waves. This scale-separated interaction leads to a Fokker–Planck (generalized diffusion) equation. More recently, starting four decades ago, this scale-separated paradigm has been investigated using ray tracing methods. These ray methods characterize spectral transport of energy by counting the amplitude and net velocity of wave packets in phase space past a high-wavenumber gate prior to ‘breaking’. This explicitly advective characterization is based on an intuitive assignment and lacks theoretical underpinning. When one takes an estimate of the net spectral drift from the wave turbulence derivation and makes the corresponding assessment, one obtains a prediction of spectral transport that is an order of magnitude larger than either observations or reported ray tracing estimates. Motivated by this contradiction, we report two parallel derivations for transport equations describing the refraction of high-frequency internal waves in a sea of random inertial waves. The first uses standard wave turbulence techniques and the second is an ensemble-averaged packet transport equation characterized by the dispersion of wave packets about a mean drift in the spectral domain. The ensemble-averaged transport equation for ray tracing differs in that it contains the intuitively motivated advective term. We conclude that the aforementioned contradiction between theory, numerics and observations needs to be taken at face value and present a pathway for resolving this contradiction.

The refraction of surface gravity waves by currents leads to spatial modulations in the wave field and, in particular, in the significant wave height. We examine this phenomenon in the case of waves scattered by a localised current feature, assuming (i) the smallness of the ratio between current velocity and wave group speed, and (ii) a swell-like, highly directional wave spectrum. We apply matched asymptotics to the equation governing the conservation of wave action in the four-dimensional position–wavenumber space. The resulting explicit formulas show that the modulations in wave action and significant wave height past the localised current are controlled by the vorticity of the current integrated along the primary direction of the swell. We assess the asymptotic predictions against numerical simulations using WAVEWATCH III for a Gaussian vortex. We also consider vortex dipoles to demonstrate the possibility of ‘vortex cloaking’ whereby certain currents have (asymptotically) no impact on the significant wave height. We discuss the role of the ratio of the two small parameters characterising assumptions (i) and (ii) above, and show that caustics are significant only for unrealistically large values of this ratio, corresponding to unrealistically narrow directional spectra.

We present the general analytical solution of the Riemann problem (decay of a jump discontinuity) for non-convex relativistic hydrodynamics. In convex dynamics, an elementary nonlinear wave, i.e. a rarefaction or a shock, originates at the discontinuity and travels towards one of the initial states. Between the left and right waves, an equilibrium state appears represented by a contact discontinuity. The exact solution to the Riemann problem in convex relativistic hydrodynamics was first addressed by Martí & Müller (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 258, 1994, pp. 317–333). In non-convex dynamics, two sequences of elementary nonlinear waves move towards the left and right initial states. Solving the Riemann problem involves determining the types of wave developing and the equilibrium state where they coincide. The procedure consists of constructing the wave curves associated with the nonlinear waves in the pressure–velocity phase space, where the intersection of the wave curves indicates the equilibrium state. We describe the relation between the wave curves, the explicit formulas for their calculation, and the outline of the process for a correct derivation and representation of the waves in the spatial domain. We present examples of the exact solution of a Riemann problem that illustrate the complex phenomena of non-convex dynamics by using the phenomenological non-convex equation of state proposed by Ibáñez et al. (Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc., vol. 476, 2017, pp. 1100–1110).

Using a multiple-scale analysis, Walker et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 944, 2022, R2) obtain the long-time behaviour of a shape-changing swimmer in a Poiseuille flow. They show that the behaviour falls into one of three categories: endless tumbling at increasing distance from the midline of the flow; preserved initial behaviour of the swimmer; or convergence to upstream rheotaxis, where the swimmer is situated at the midline of the flow. Furthermore, a single swimmer-dependent constant is identified that determines which of the three behaviours is realised.

In this paper, a high-level Green–Naghdi (HLGN) model for large-amplitude internal waves in a two-layer fluid system, where the upper-fluid layer is of finite depth and the lower-fluid layer is of infinite depth, is developed under the rigid-lid free-surface approximation. The equations of the present HLGN model follow Euler's equations under the sole assumption that the horizontal and vertical velocity distributions along the vertical column are presented by known shape functions for each layer. The linear dispersion relations of the HLGN model for different levels are presented and compared with those obtained by other strongly nonlinear models for deep water, including the fully nonlinear models that include the dispersion effects $O(\mu )$ (where $\mu$ is the ratio of the upper-fluid layer depth to a typical wavelength) derived by Choi & Camassa (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 77, 1996, pp. 1759–1762) and $O(\mu ^2)$ derived by Debsarma et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 654, 2010, pp. 281–303). It is shown that the HLGN model has a wider application range than other models. Solutions of travelling large-amplitude internal solitary waves in the absence and presence of background shear-current are then investigated by using the HLGN model. For the no-current cases, results obtained by the HLGN model show better agreement with Euler's solution on wave profile, velocity profile at the maximum interface displacement and wave speed compared with those obtained by other models. For the background shear-current cases, results obtained by the HLGN model also show good agreement with those obtained by solving the Dubreil-Jacotin–Long equation.

A surfactant-laden liquid film that lines the inside of an oscillating spherical cap is considered as a model of lung alveoli. Pulmonary surfactant solubility is described by Langmuir adsorption kinetics, modified by incorporating the intrinsic compressibility of the adsorbed monolayer. A novel boundary condition, supported by experimental data and scaling arguments, is applied at the rim. The condition enforces mass conservation of water and surfactant by matching the ‘large-scale’ dynamics of the alveolus to ‘small-scale’ equilibrium over mid-alveolar septa of small but finite thickness. Linear and weakly nonlinear analysis around the conditions in a non-oscillating cap indicates that the occurrence of shearing motion in the liquid is related to the non-zero film thickness over the rim, and shearing velocity at the interface is predicted an order-of-magnitude lower than the velocity of radial oscillation. Marangoni stresses dominate the interfacial dynamics, but capillary stresses affect significantly the interior flow field. In particular, they produce spatial modulations in flow rate, surface concentration of surfactant and wall shear stress, whose length scale varies with $Ca^{-1/3}$, i.e. is determined by a balance between capillary and viscous forces. Non-zero adsorption kinetics modifies at first order only the amplitude and phase of surface concentration, but affects all other variables at second order. In particular, it sets a steady drift of surfactant away from the alveolus and towards the rim. Finally, an attempt is made to relate the present predictions to physiological findings about air flow and particle deposition inside alveoli, and about shear stress-inflicted damage in diseased lungs.

We employ a linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations to study the characteristics of wall modes in thermal convection in a rectangular box under strong and inclined magnetic fields. The walls of the convection cell are electrically insulated. The stability analysis assumes periodicity in the spanwise direction perpendicular to the plane of a homogeneous magnetic field. Our study shows that for a fixed vertical magnetic field, the imposition of horizontal magnetic fields results in an increase of the critical Rayleigh number along with a decrease in the wavelength of the wall modes. The wall modes become tilted along the direction of the resulting magnetic fields and therefore extend further into the bulk as the horizontal magnetic field is increased. Once the modes localized on the opposite walls interact, the critical Rayleigh number decreases again and eventually drops below the value for onset with a purely vertical field. We find that for sufficiently strong horizontal magnetic fields, the steady wall modes occupy the entire bulk and therefore convection is no longer restricted to the sidewalls. The aforementioned results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the nonlinear evolution of magnetoconvection. The direct numerical simulation results also reveal that at least for large values of horizontal magnetic field, the wall-mode structures and the resulting heat transfer are dependent on the initial conditions.

The wall-attached structure characteristics of flow and dust concentration fields are investigated in this study based on high-Reynolds-number ($Re_{\tau } \sim O(10^{6})$) synchronous multiphase observations from the Qingtu Lake observation array site (recorded by Liu et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 957, 2023, A14). The results show that not only the particle-free flow field but also the particle-laden flow and dust concentration field contain wall-attached structures. The linear coherence spectrum, as a data-driven filter, is adopted to separate the wall-attached portions from the premultiplied spectra. The decomposed spectra for wall-attached structures in streamwise velocity fluctuations under particle-free and particle-laden conditions show obvious outer-scaling and wall-scaling at large-scale and medium-scale ranges, respectively, but the spectra of dust concentration exhibit only wall-scaling rather than outer-scaling. The streamwise length of the most significant wall-attached dust clustering structures in the logarithmic region is approximately five times the boundary layer thickness, and does not change significantly with height. Furthermore, the streamwise turbulence intensity for wall-attached portions follows the universal Townsend–Perry constant, without particle mass loading effect. Correspondingly, the wall-attached portions of the dust concentration also exhibit universal logarithmic decay slope. The remaining non-attached portions for the turbulent velocity and dust concentration have significant dependence on the particle mass loading.

We present data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the fully turbulent flow through nominally two-dimensional channels containing longitudinal, surface-mounted, rectangular ribs whose widths ($W$) are either one third of or equal to the gap ($S-W$) between consecutive ribs across the domain, where $S$ is the span (centre-to-centre spacing) of the ribs. A range of the ratio of channel half-height ($H$) to span ($S$) is considered, covering $0.25\le H/S\le 2.5$. In each case, a fixed rib height ($h$) of $0.1H$ was used, but a number of cases with much smaller heights, $h/H=0.025$ or 0.05, were also studied. The secondary flows resulting from the presence of the ribs are examined, along with their sources in terms of the axial vorticity transport equation, which highlights the effects of spanwise inhomogeneity in the Reynolds stresses. We show that the strength of the secondary flows depends strongly on $H/S$ (and, correspondingly, on $W/S$) and that the major sources of axial vorticity arise near the top corners of the ribs, with convection of that vorticity dominating its spread. We also show that for smaller ribs, the secondary flow strengths are similar to those predicted by Zampino et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 944, 2022, A4) using a linearised model of the Reynolds-averaged equations, which does not include the vorticity convection process; the behaviour of secondary flow topology and strength with varying $W/H$ is thus noticeably different.

Based on a generalized local Kolmogorov–Hill equation expressing the evolution of kinetic energy integrated over spheres of size $\ell$ in the inertial range of fluid turbulence, we examine a possible definition of entropy and entropy generation for turbulence. Its measurement from direct numerical simulations in isotropic turbulence leads to confirmation of the validity of the fluctuation relation (FR) from non-equilibrium thermodynamics in the inertial range of turbulent flows. Specifically, the ratio of probability densities of forward and inverse cascade at scale $\ell$ is shown to follow exponential behaviour with the entropy generation rate if the latter is defined by including an appropriately defined notion of ‘temperature of turbulence’ proportional to the kinetic energy at scale $\ell$.

Vertical convection is the fluid motion that is induced by the heating and cooling of two opposed vertical boundaries of a rectangular cavity (see e.g. Wang et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 917, 2021, A6). We consider the linear stability of the steady two-dimensional flow reached at Rayleigh numbers of O($10^8$). As a function of the Prandtl number, $Pr$, and the height-to-width aspect ratio of the domain, $A$, the base flow of each case is computed numerically and linear simulations are used to obtain the properties of the leading linear instability mode. Flow regimes depend on the presence of a circulation in the entire cavity, detachment of the thermal layer from the boundary or the corner regions and on the oscillation frequency relative to the natural frequency of oscillation in the stably temperature-stratified interior, allowing for the presence of internal waves or not. Accordingly, the regime is called slow or fast, respectively. Either the global circulation or internal waves in the interior may couple the top and bottom buoyancy currents, while their absence implies asymmetry in their perturbation amplitude. Six flow regimes are found in the range of $0.1 \leq Pr \leq 4$ and $0.5 \leq A \leq 2$. For $Pr \lessapprox 0.4$ and $A>1$, the base flow is driven by a large circulation in the entire cavity. For $Pr \gtrapprox 0.7$, the thermal boundary layers are thin and the instability is driven by the motion along the wall and the detached boundary layer. A transition between these regimes is marked by a dramatic change in oscillation frequency at $Pr = 0.55 \pm 0.15$ and $A <2$.

Gravitational sedimentation and the collision of particles play key roles in various natural and engineering processes. In practice, particles are often non-spherical in shape with non-uniform mass distribution. In this study we investigate how the mass eccentricity influences the settling and gravitational collision of non-spherical particles in a quiescent fluid. Firstly, we theoretically analyse the effect of mass centre offset on the settling motion of a single spheroid under the low-Reynolds-number assumption. We find that the competition of fluid-inertia torque and gravitational torque determines the terminal settling mode of the spheroid. As the mass centre offset increases from zero to a critical value, the orientation of a settling spheroid undergoes a transition from the broad-side-on to narrow-side-on alignment. With an intermediate mass centre offset, the settling spheroid prefers an oblique orientation with a horizontal drift. Secondly, we investigate the gravitational collision rate of settling spheroids. With the change of particle orientation, the collision kernel exhibits a non-monotonic variation with a maximum when particles settle with an intermediate oblique orientation. Therefore, adjusting the mass centre offset to alter particle orientation can indirectly affect the collision rate of settling spheroidal particles. In summary, our findings reveal the significance of the mass eccentricity on particle dynamics in fluid flows, and suggest a potential approach for manipulating the settling motion and collision rate of non-spherical particles by adjusting their mass centre position.

We determine the globally minimum time $T$ needed to translate a thin submerged flat plate a given distance parallel to its surface within a work budget. The Reynolds number for the flow is assumed to be large so that the drag on the plate arises from skin friction in a thin viscous boundary layer. The minimum is determined computationally using a steepest descent, where an adjoint formulation is used to compute the gradients. Because the equations governing fluid mechanics for this problem are nonlinear, multiple local minima could exist. Exploiting the quadratic nature of the objective function and the constraining differential equations, we derive and apply a ‘spectral condition’ to show the converged local optimum to be a global one. The condition states that the optimum is global if the Hessian of the Lagrangian in the state variables constructed using the converged adjoint field is positive semi-definite at every instance. The globally optimum kinematics of the plate starts from rest with speed $\propto t^{1/4}$ and comes to rest with speed $\propto (T-t)^{1/4}$ as a function of time $t$. For distances much longer than the plate, the work-minimizing kinematics consists of an optimum startup, a constant-speed cruising, and an optimum stopping.

We recently lost a valuable colleague and friend, Paul Steen, and the text below is a brief overview of his life.

We construct an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model consisting of the history and random effects for the streamwise velocity fluctuation in boundary-layer turbulence. The distance to the wall and the boundary-layer thickness determine the time step and the order of the ARMA model, respectively. Based on the autocorrelation's analytical expression of the ARMA model, we obtain a global analytical expression for the second-order structure function, which asymptotically captures the inertial, dynamic and large-scale ranges. Specifically, the exponential autocorrelation of the ARMA model arises from the autoregressive coefficients and is modified to logarithmic behaviour by the moving-average coefficients. The asymptotic expressions enable us to determine model coefficients by existing parameters, such as the Kolmogorov and the Townsend–Perry constants. A consequent double-log expression for the characteristic length scale is derived and is justified by direct numerical simulation data with $Re_\tau \approx 5200$ and field-measured neutral atmospheric surface layer data with $Re_\tau \sim O(10^6)$ from the Qingtu Lake Observation Array site. This relation is robust because it applies to $Re_\tau$ from $O(10^4)$ to $O(10^6)$, and even when the statistics of natural ASL deviate from those of canonical boundary-layer turbulence, e.g. in the case of imbalance in energy production and dissipation, and when the Townsend–Perry constant deviates from traditional values.

The classical Gill's problem, focusing on the stability of thermal buoyancy-driven convection in a vertical porous slab with impermeable isothermal boundaries, is studied from a different perspective by considering a triple-diffusive fluid system having different molecular diffusivities. The assessment of stability/instability of the basic flow entails a numerical solution of the governing equations for the disturbances as Gill's proof of linear stability falls short. The updated problem formulation is found to introduce instability in contrast to Gill's original set-up. A systematic examination of neutral stability curves is undertaken for KCl–NaCl–sucrose and heat–KCl–sucrose aqueous systems which are found to exhibit an anomalous behaviour on the stability of base flow. It is found that, in some cases, the KCl–NaCl–sucrose system necessitates the requirement of four critical values of the Darcy–Rayleigh number to specify the linear stability criteria ascribed to the existence of two isolated neutral curves positioned one below the other. Conversely, the heat–KCl–sucrose system demands only two critical values of the Darcy–Rayleigh number to decide the stability of the system. The stability boundaries are presented and the emergence of a travelling-wave mode supported back and forth with stationary modes is observed due to the introduction of a third diffusing component. In addition, some intriguing outcomes not recognized hitherto for double-diffusive fluid systems are manifested.
