Suspensions of microswimmers exhibit distinct characteristics as compared with those of passive particles because the internal particles are in a state of spontaneous motion. Although there have been many studies of microswimmer suspensions, not many have carefully considered the hydrodynamics. Hydrodynamics becomes particularly important when discussing non-dilute suspensions, because the lubrication flow generates a large force when the swimmers are in close proximity. This paper focuses on hydrodynamics and describes the transport phenomena of microswimmer suspensions, such as migration, collective motion, diffusion and rheology. The paper is structured to progressively scale up from a single microswimmer to collective motion to a macroscale continuum. At each scale, the discussion also evolves from dilute to concentrated suspensions. We first introduce natural swimming microorganisms, artificial microswimmers and mathematical models, as well as the fundamentals of fluid mechanics relevant to microswimmers. We then describe the migration of microswimmers by taxis, where microswimmers respond passively or actively to their hydrodynamic environment. Microswimmers exhibit collective motions, the mechanism of which is discussed in terms of hydrodynamics. The spreading of microswimmers is often diffusive, and the diffusion coefficient is much larger than for passive particles. Similarly, the mass diffusivity in microswimmer suspensions is higher due to their swimming activity. We explain these macroscopic diffusion properties. The viscosity of microswimmer suspensions can be higher or lower depending on the characteristics and orientation of the microswimmers. We describe the rheological properties of microswimmer suspensions in shear flow and Poiseuille flow. Finally, current issues and future research perspectives are discussed.

While we now have a relatively good understanding of low-Reynolds-number hydrodynamics, and elegant techniques to dissect it, one cannot truly say the same for yield-stress fluids. For these materials, the nonlinearity associated with the yield stress complicates analysis and prevents the use of many of the techniques used for slow viscous flow. Simultaneously, the presence of a yield stress introduces a range of new features into the problem beyond those of traditional Stokes flow. Accordingly, in this essay, we discuss the impact of a yield stress in the relatively simple setting of two-dimensional, steady, inertialess flow. The main goals are to establish intuition for the dramatically different features that can be introduced to the flow by the yield stress, and to outline the various tools available to the modeller to construct and interpret these flows.

The Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes (CHNS) partial differential equations (PDEs) provide a powerful framework for the study of the statistical mechanics and fluid dynamics of multiphase fluids. We provide an introduction to the equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of systems in which coexisting phases, distinguished from each other by scalar order parameters, are separated by an interface. We then introduce the coupled CHNS PDEs for two immiscible fluids and generalisations for (i) coexisting phases with different viscosities, (ii) CHNS with gravity, (iii) three-component fluids and (iv) the CHNS for active fluids. We discuss mathematical issues of the regularity of solutions of the CHNS PDEs. Finally we provide a survey of the rich variety of results that have been obtained by numerical studies of CHNS-type PDEs for diverse systems, including bubbles in turbulent flows, antibubbles, droplet and liquid-lens mergers, turbulence in the active-CHNS model and its generalisation that can lead to a self-propelled droplet.

In 1945–1949, Lars Onsager made an exact analysis of the high-Reynolds-number limit for individual turbulent flow realisations modelled by incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, motivated by experimental observations that dissipation of kinetic energy does not vanish. I review here developments spurred by his key idea that such flows are well described by distributional or ‘weak’ solutions of ideal Euler equations. 1/3 Hölder singularities of the velocity field were predicted by Onsager and since observed. His theory describes turbulent energy cascade without probabilistic assumptions and yields a local, deterministic version of the Kolmogorov $4/5$th law. The approach is closely related to renormalisation group methods in physics and envisages ‘conservation-law anomalies’, as discovered later in quantum field theory. There are also deep connections with large-eddy simulation modelling. More recently, dissipative Euler solutions of the type conjectured by Onsager have been constructed and his $1/3$ Hölder singularity proved to be the sharp threshold for anomalous dissipation. This progress has been achieved by an unexpected connection with work of John Nash on isometric embeddings of low regularity or ‘convex integration’ techniques. The dissipative Euler solutions yielded by this method are wildly non-unique for fixed initial data, suggesting ‘spontaneously stochastic’ behaviour of high-Reynolds-number solutions. I focus in particular on applications to wall-bounded turbulence, leading to novel concepts of spatial cascades of momentum, energy and vorticity to or from the wall as deterministic, space–time local phenomena. This theory thus makes testable predictions and offers new perspectives on large-eddy simulation in the presence of solid walls.

Turbulence is a complex nonlinear and multi-scale phenomenon. Although the fundamental underlying equations, the Navier–Stokes equations, have been known for two centuries, it remains extremely challenging to extract from them the statistical properties of turbulence. Therefore, for practical purposes, a sustained effort has been devoted to obtaining an effective description of turbulence, that we may call turbulence modelling, or statistical theory of turbulence. In this respect, the renormalisation group (RG) appears as a tool of choice, since it is precisely designed to provide effective theories from fundamental equations by performing in a systematic way the average over fluctuations. However, for Navier–Stokes turbulence, a suitable framework for the RG, allowing in particular for non-perturbative approximations, has been missing, which has thwarted RG applications for a long time. This framework is provided by the modern formulation of the RG called the functional renormalisation group (FRG). The use of the FRG has enabled important progress in the theoretical understanding of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. The major one is the rigorous derivation, from the Navier–Stokes equations, of an analytical expression for any Eulerian multi-point multi-time correlation function, which is exact in the limit of large wavenumbers. We propose in this JFM Perspectives article a survey of the FRG method for turbulence. We provide a basic introduction to the FRG and emphasise how the field-theoretical framework allows one to systematically and profoundly exploit the symmetries. We stress that the FRG enables one to describe fully developed turbulence forced at large scales, which was not accessible by perturbative means. We show that it yields the energy spectrum and second-order structure function with accurate estimates of the related constants, and also the behaviour of the spectrum in the near-dissipative range. Finally, we expound the derivation of the spatio-temporal behaviour of $n$-point correlation functions, and largely illustrate these results through the analysis of data from experiments and direct numerical simulations.

This article presents an overview of the dynamics of the human heart and the main goal is the discussion of its fluid mechanic features. We will see, however, that the flow in the heart can not be fully described without considering its electrophysiology and elastomechanics as well as the interaction with the systemic and pulmonary circulations with which it is strongly connected. Biologically, the human heart is similar to that of all warm-blooded mammals and it satisfies the same allometric laws. Since the Paleolithic Age, however, humans have improved their living conditions, have modified the environment to satisfy their needs and, more recently, have developed advanced medical knowledge which has allowed triple the number of heartbeats with respect to other mammals. In the last century, effective diagnostic tools, reliable surgical procedures and prosthetic devices have been developed and refined leading to substantial progress in cardiology and heart surgery with routine clinical practice which nowadays cures many disorders, once lethal. Pulse duplicators have been built to reproduce the pulsatile flow and ‘blood analogues’, have been realized. Heart phantoms, can attain deformations similar to the real heart although the active contraction and the tissue anisotropy still can not be replicated. Numerical models have also become a viable alternative for cardiovascular research: they do not suffer from limitations of material properties and device technologies, thus making possible the realization of truly digital twins. Unfortunately, a high-fidelity model for the whole heart consists of a system of coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations with a number of degrees of freedom of the order of a billion and computational costs become the bottleneck. An additional challenge comes from the inherent human variability and the uncertainty of the heart parameters whose statistical assessment requires a campaign of simulations rather than a single deterministic calculation; reduced and surrogate models can be employed to alleviate the huge computational burden and all possibilities are currently being pursued. In the era of big data and artificial intelligence, cardiovascular research is also advancing by exploiting the latest technologies: equation-based augmented reality, virtual surgery and computational prediction of disease progression are just a few examples among many that will become standard practice in the forthcoming years.

The mechanisms of destabilisation of the flow through soft-walled channels/tubes are qualitatively different from those in rigid-walled conduits. The stability depends on two dimensionless parameters, the Reynolds number $(\rho _f V_f h_f/ \mu _f)$ and $\varSigma = (\rho _f G h_f^{2}/\mu _f^{2})$, where $\rho _f$ and $\mu _f$ are the fluid density and viscosity, $h_f$ and $V_f$ are the fluid length and velocity scale and $G$ is the wall elasticity modulus. There is an instability at zero Reynolds number when the dimensionless parameter $\varGamma = (\mu _f V_f / h_f G)$ exceeds a critical value. The low-Reynolds-number instability of the Couette flow past a compliant surface is well understood, and has been confirmed in experiments, but that in a pressure-driven flow is not completely understood. Two modes of instability at high Reynolds number have been predicted: the inviscid mode with an internal viscous layer, for which the transition Reynolds number scales as ${Re}_t \propto \varSigma ^{1/2}$; and the wall mode instability with a viscous layer at the wall, for which ${Re}_t \propto \varSigma ^{3/4}$. The wall mode instability has been observed in experiments at Reynolds number as low as 300 in a soft-walled tube and as low as 100 in a channel with one compliant wall, though the scaling of the transition Reynolds number differs from the theoretical prediction due to substantial wall deformation. Though the flow after transition shares many of the characteristics of hard-wall turbulence, it differs in significant ways, suggesting that soft-wall turbulence is a separate class distinct from hard-wall turbulence.

An informal introduction is provided to a range of topics in fluid dynamics having a topological character. These topics include flows with boundary singularities, Lagrangian chaos, frozen-in fields, magnetohydrodynamic analogies, fast- and slow-dynamo mechanisms, magnetic relaxation, minimum-energy states, knotted flux tubes, vortex reconnection and the finite-time singularity problem. The paper concludes with a number of open questions concerning the above topics.

The generation of a magnetic field in an electrically conducting fluid generally involves the complicated nonlinear interaction of flow turbulence, rotation and field. This dynamo process is of great importance in geophysics, planetary science and astrophysics, since magnetic fields are known to play a key role in the dynamics of these systems. This paper gives an introduction to dynamo theory for the fluid dynamicist. It proceeds by laying the groundwork, introducing the equations and techniques that are at the heart of dynamo theory, before presenting some simple dynamo solutions. The problems currently exercising dynamo theorists are then introduced, along with the attempts to make progress. The paper concludes with the argument that progress in dynamo theory will be made in the future by utilising and advancing some of the current breakthroughs in neutral fluid turbulence such as those in transition, self-sustaining processes, turbulence/mean-flow interaction, statistical and data-driven methods and maintenance and loss of balance.

Capillarity is the familiar manifestation of the cohesion of liquids. Since Laplace (Traité de mécanique céleste, vol. IV, supplément au livre X: Sur l’action capillaire, 1805, pp. 1–65), we know that intense attractive forces between the molecules bridge the small with the large as they shape liquid/vapour interfaces at the macroscopic scale through the concept of surface tension (menisci, drops, bubbles, puddles, liquid rise in tubes, etc. …). We concentrate on situations where liquids ‘disgregate’, following the neologism of Clausius (Phil. Mag., vol. 24 (159), 1862, pp. 81–97), meaning that they fragment by the action of deformation stresses whose intensity competes with that of cohesion forces. Various examples, including explosions, blow-ups, hard and soft impacts and shears applied to liquid jets, sheets and drops are reviewed. They concern applications ranging from liquid propulsion, agricultural spraying, to the formation of ocean spray, raindrops and human exhalations by violent respiratory events. In spite of their diversity, the various modes of fragment production share an ultimate common phenomenology – the ligament dynamics – suggesting that the final stable droplet size distribution can be interpreted from elementary principles.

This article describes recent progress on premixed flame dynamics interacting with acoustic waves. Expressions are derived to determine the stability of combustors with respect to thermoacoustic oscillations. The validity of these expressions is general, but they are illustrated in laminar systems. Laminar burners are commonly used to elucidate the response of premixed flames to incoming flow perturbations, highlight the role of acoustic radiation in their stability, identify modes associated with thermoacoustic intrinsic instabilities and decipher the leading mechanisms in annular systems with multiple injectors. Many industrial devices also operate in a laminar premixed mode such as, for example, domestic gas boilers and heaters equipped with matrix burners for material processing in which unconfined flames are stabilized at one extremity of the system. This article proposes a systematic approach to determine the stability of all these systems with respect to thermoacoustic oscillations by highlighting the key role of the burner impedance and the flame transfer function (FTF). This transfer function links in frequency space incoming flow perturbations to heat release rate disturbances. This concept can be used in the turbulent flame case as well. Weakly nonlinear stability analysis can also easily be conducted by replacing the FTF by a flame describing function in the expressions derived in this work. The response of premixed flames to harmonic mixture compositions and flow-rate perturbations is then revisited and the main parameters controlling the FTF are described. A theoretical framework is finally developed to reduce the system thermoacoustic sensitivity by tailoring the FTF.

Surfactants – molecules and particles that preferentially adsorb to fluid interfaces – play a ubiquitous role in the fluids of industry, of nature and of life. Since most surfactants cannot be seen directly, their behaviour must be inferred from their impact on observed flows, like the buoyant rise of a bubble, or the thickness of a coating film. In so doing, however, a difficulty arises: physically distinct surfactant processes can affect measurable flows in qualitatively identical ways, raising the spectre of confusion or even misinterpretation. This Perspective describes, in one coherent piece, both the equilibrium properties and dynamic processes of surfactants, to better enable the fluid mechanics community to understand, interpret and design surfactant/fluid systems. Specifically, we treat the equilibrium thermodynamics of surfactants at interfaces, including surface pressure, isotherms of soluble and insoluble surfactants and surface dilatational moduli (Gibbs and Marangoni). We describe surfactant dynamics in fluid systems, including surfactant transport and interfacial stress boundary conditions, the competition between surface diffusion, advection and adsorption/desorption, Marangoni stresses and flows and surface-excess rheology. We discuss paradigmatic problems from fluid mechanics that are impacted by surfactants, including translating drops and bubbles, surfactant adsorption to clean and oscillating interfaces; capillary wave damping, thin-film dynamics, foam drainage and the dynamics of particles and probes at surfactant-laden interfaces. Finally, we discuss the additional richness and complexity that frequently arise in ‘real’ surfactants, including phase transitions, phase coexistence and polycrystalline phases within surfactant monolayers, and their impact on non-Newtonian surface rheology.
