Under the assumption of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) components, the problem of the stochastic comparison of a coherent system having used components and a used coherent system has been considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions on structure functions have been provided for the stochastic comparison of a coherent system having used/inactive i.i.d. components and a used/inactive coherent system. As a consequence, for r-out-of-n systems, it has been shown that systems having used i.i.d. components stochastically dominate used systems in the likelihood ratio ordering.

A scale-free tree with the parameter β is very close to a star if β is just a bit larger than −1, whereas it is close to a random recursive tree if β is very large. Through the Zagreb index, we consider the whole scene of the evolution of the scale-free trees model as β goes from −1 to + ∞. The critical values of β are shown to be the first several nonnegative integer numbers. We get the first two moments and the asymptotic behaviors of this index of a scale-free tree for all β. The generalized plane-oriented recursive trees model is also mentioned in passing, as well as the Gordon-Scantlebury and the Platt indices, which are closely related to the Zagreb index.

We introduce and analyze a random tree model associated to Hoppe's urn. The tree is built successively by adding nodes to the existing tree when starting with the single root node. In each step a node is added to the tree as a child of an existing node, where these parent nodes are chosen randomly with probabilities proportional to their weights. The root node has weight ϑ>0, a given fixed parameter, all other nodes have weight 1. This resembles the stochastic dynamic of Hoppe's urn. For ϑ=1, the resulting tree is the well-studied random recursive tree. We analyze the height, internal path length, and number of leaves of the Hoppe tree with n nodes as well as the depth of the last inserted node asymptotically as n→∞. Mainly expectations, variances, and asymptotic distributions of these parameters are derived.

Consider a random walk Sn = ∑i=0nXi with negative drift. This paper deals with upper bounds for the maximum M = maxn≥1Sn of this random walk in different settings of power moment existences. As is usual for deriving upper bounds, we truncate summands. Therefore, we use an approach of splitting the time axis by stopping times into intervals of random but finite length and then choose a level of truncation on each interval. Hereby, we can reduce the problem of finding upper bounds for M to the problem of finding upper bounds for Mτ = maxn≤τSn. In addition we test our inequalities in the heavy traffic regime in the case of regularly varying tails.

We study the array of point-to-point distances in random regular graphs equipped with exponential edge lengths. We consider the regime where the degree is kept fixed while the number of vertices tends to ∞. The marginal distribution of an individual entry is now well understood, thanks to the work of Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and Hooghiemstra (2010). The purpose of this note is to show that the whole array, suitably recentered, converges in the weak sense to an explicit infinite random array. Our proof consists in analyzing the invasion of the network by several mutually exclusive flows emanating from different sources and propagating simultaneously along the edges.

Gene conversion is a genetic mechanism by which one gene is ‘copied and pasted’ onto another gene, where the direction can be biased between the different types. In this paper, a stochastic model for biased gene conversion within a d-unlinked multigene family and its diffusion approximation are developed for a finite Moran population. A connection with a d-island model is made. A formula for the fixation probability in the absence of mutation is given. A two-timescale argument is applied in the case of the strong conversion limit. The dual process is generally shown to be a biased voter model, which generates an ancestral bias graph for a given sample. An importance sampling algorithm for computing the likelihood of the sample is deduced.

We consider a stochastic SIR (susceptible → infective → removed) epidemic on a random graph with specified degree distribution, constructed using the configuration model, and investigate the ‘acquaintance vaccination’ method for targeting individuals of high degree for vaccination. Branching process approximations are developed which yield a post-vaccination threshold parameter, and the asymptotic (large population) probability and final size of a major outbreak. We find that introducing an imperfect vaccine response into the present model for acquaintance vaccination leads to sibling dependence in the approximating branching processes, which may then require infinite type spaces for their analysis and are generally not amenable to numerical calculation. Thus, we propose and analyse an alternative model for acquaintance vaccination, which avoids these difficulties. The theory is illustrated by a brief numerical study, which suggests that the two models for acquaintance vaccination yield quantitatively very similar disease properties.

In this paper we study asymptotic consistency of law invariant convex risk measures and the corresponding risk averse stochastic programming problems for independent, identically distributed data. Under mild regularity conditions, we prove a law of large numbers and epiconvergence of the corresponding statistical estimators. This can be applied in a straightforward way to establish convergence with probability 1 of sample-based estimators of risk averse stochastic programming problems.

In this paper we derive limit theorems for the conditional distribution of X1 given Sn=sn as n→ ∞, where the Xi are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables, Sn=X1+··· +Xn, and sn/n converges or sn ≡ s is constant. We obtain convergence in total variation of PX1∣ Sn/n=s to a distribution associated to that of X1 and of PnX1∣ Sn=s to a gamma distribution. The case of stable distributions (to which the method of associated distributions cannot be applied) is studied in detail.

Let Xi,i ∈ ℕ, be independent and identically distributed random variables with values in ℕ0. We transform (‘prune’) the sequence {X1,…,Xn},n∈ ℕ, of discrete random samples into a sequence {0,1,2,…,Yn}, n∈ ℕ, of contiguous random sets by replacing Xn+1 with Yn +1 if Xn+1 >Yn. We consider the asymptotic behaviour of Yn as n→∞. Applications include path growth in digital search trees and the number of tables in Pitman's Chinese restaurant process if the latter is conditioned on its limit value.

Known results on the moments of the distribution generated by the two-locus Wright–Fisher diffusion model, and the duality between the diffusion process and the ancestral process with recombination are briefly summarized. A numerical method for computing moments using a Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation and a method to compute closed-form expressions of the moments are presented. By applying the duality argument, the properties of the ancestral recombination graph are studied in terms of the moments.

We study an urn model introduced in the paper of Chen and Wei (2005), where at each discrete time step m balls are drawn at random from the urn containing colors white and black. Balls are added to the urn according to the inspected colors, generalizing the well known Pólya-Eggenberger urn model, case m = 1. We provide exact expressions for the expectation and the variance of the number of white balls after n draws, and determine the structure of higher moments. Moreover, we discuss extensions to more than two colors. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss a new urn model where the sampling of the m balls is carried out in a step-by-step fashion, and also introduce a generalized Friedman's urn model.

We consider a large class of exponential random graph models and prove the existence of a region of parameter space corresponding to the emergent multipartite structure, separated by a phase transition from a region of disordered graphs. An essential feature is the formalism of graph limits as developed by Lovász et al. for dense random graphs.

Sequential order statistics can be used to describe the ordered lifetimes of components in a system, where the failure of a component may affect the performance of remaining components. In this paper mixture representations of the residual lifetime and the inactivity time of systems with such failure-dependent components are considered. Stochastic comparisons of differently structured systems are obtained and properties of the weights in the mixture representations are examined. Furthermore, corresponding representations of the residual lifetime and the inactivity time of a system given the additional information about a previous failure time are derived.

Using a characterizing equation for the beta distribution, Stein's method is applied to obtain bounds of the optimal order for the Wasserstein distance between the distribution of the scaled number of white balls drawn from a Pólya-Eggenberger urn and its limiting beta distribution. The bound is computed by making a direct comparison between characterizing operators of the target and the beta distribution, the former derived by extending Stein's density approach to discrete distributions. In addition, refinements are given to Döbler's (2012) result for the arcsine approximation for the fraction of time a simple random walk of even length spends positive, and so also to the distributions of its last return time to 0 and its first visit to its terminal point, by supplying explicit constants to the present Wasserstein bound and also demonstrating that its rate is of the optimal order.

In this note we find a new result concerning the asymptotic expected number of passages of a finite or infinite interval (x,x+h) as x→∞ for a random walk with increments having a positive expected value. If the increments are distributed like X then the limit for 0<h<∞ turns out to have the form Emin(|X|,h)/EX, which unexpectedly is independent of h for the special case where |X|≤b<∞ almost surely and h>b. When h=∞, the limit is Emax(X,0)/EX. For the case of a simple random walk, a more pedestrian derivation of the limit is given.

We consider a continuous-time, single-type, age-dependent Bellman-Harris branching process. We investigate the limit distribution of the point process A(t)={at,i: 1≤ i≤ Z(t)}, where at,i is the age of the ith individual alive at time t, 1≤ i≤ Z(t), and Z(t) is the population size of individuals alive at time t. Also, if Z(t)≥ k, k≥2, is a positive integer, we pick k individuals from those who are alive at time t by simple random sampling without replacement and trace their lines of descent backward in time until they meet for the first time. Let Dk(t) be the coalescence time (the death time of the last common ancestor) of these k random chosen individuals. We study the distribution of Dk(t) and its limit distribution as t→∞.

The asymptotic variance of the sample mean of a homogeneous Poisson marked point process has been studied in the literature, but confusion has arisen as to the correct expression due to some technical intricacies. This note sets the record straight with regards to the variance of the sample mean. In addition, a central limit theorem in the general d-dimensional case is also established.

Formulae for ζ(2n) and Lχ4(2n + 1) involving Euler and tangent numbers are derived using the hyperbolic secant probability distribution and its moment generating function. In particular, the Basel problem, where ζ(2) = π2 / 6, is considered. Euler's infinite product for the sine is also proved using the distribution of sums of independent hyperbolic secant random variables and a local limit theorem.
