For a random walk with both downward and upward jumps (increments), the joint distribution of the exit time across a given level and the undershoot or overshoot at crossing is determined through its generating function, when assuming that the distribution of the jump in the direction making the exit possible has a Laplace transform which is a rational function. The expected exit time is also determined and the paper concludes with exact distribution results concerning exits from bounded intervals. The proofs use simple martingale techniques together with some classical expansions of polynomials and Rouché's theorem from complex function theory.

In this paper a problem arising in queueing and dam theory is studied. We shall consider a G/G*/1 queueing model, i.e., a G/G/1 queueing model of which the service process is a separable centered process with stationary independent increments. This is a generalisation of the well-known G/G/1 model with constant service rate.

Several results concerning the amount of work done by the server, the busy cycles etc., are derived, mainly using the well-known method of Pollaczek. Emphasis is laid on the similarities and dissimilarities between the results of the ‘classical’ G/G/1 model and the G/G*/1 model.

In this article we consider a generalisation of conservative processes in which the usual transition rate parameters are replaced by time-dependent stochastic variables. The main result of the article shows that these generalised processes which we call conservative processes with stochastic rates have transition probabilities which can be characterised in terms of exchangeable random variables in a manner similar to the characterisation of conservative processes in terms of independent random variables given by Bartlett (1949). We use this characterisation to obtain general expressions for the transition probabilities and to examine some limiting aspects of the processes. The carrier-borne epidemic is treated as a particular case of these generalised processes.

Equations are derived for the distribution of the busy period of the GI/G/2 queue. The equations are analyzed for the M/G/2 queue, assuming that the service times have a density which is an arbitrary linear combination, with respect to both the number of stages and the rate parameter, of Erlang densities. The coefficients may be negative. Special cases and examples are studied.

We extend Goldie's implicit renewal theorem to the arithmetic case, which allows us to determine the tail behavior of the solution of various random fixed point equations. It turns out that the arithmetic and nonarithmetic cases are very different. Under appropriate conditions we obtain that the tail of the solution X of the fixed point equations X =DAX + B and X =DAX ∨ B is ℓ(x) q(x) x-κ, where q is a logarithmically periodic function q(x eh) = q(x), x > 0, with h being the span of the arithmetic distribution of log A, and ℓ is a slowly varying function. In particular, the tail is not necessarily regularly varying. We use the renewal theoretic approach developed by Grincevičius (1975) and Goldie (1991).

The paper establishes limit theorems for the total progeny of a simple branching process in which immigration is allowed whenever the population size reaches 0.

This paper addresses the asymptotic analysis of sojourn functionals of spatiotemporal Gaussian random fields with long-range dependence (LRD) in time, also known as long memory. Specifically, reduction theorems are derived for local functionals of nonlinear transformation of such fields, with Hermite rank $m\geq 1,$ under general covariance structures. These results are proven to hold, in particular, for a family of nonseparable covariance structures belonging to the Gneiting class. For $m=2,$ under separability of the spatiotemporal covariance function in space and time, the properly normalized Minkowski functional, involving the modulus of a Gaussian random field, converges in distribution to the Rosenblatt-type limiting distribution for a suitable range of values of the long-memory parameter.

It is proved that in a GI/G/s queue with the traffic intensity ρ < (S – m + l)/S, m ≧ 1, at least m servers are simultaneously idle infinitely often with probability one.

Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is frequently used when sampling from hidden populations. In RDS, sampled individuals pass on participation coupons to at most c of their acquaintances in the community (c = 3 being a common choice). If these individuals choose to participate, they in turn pass coupons on to their acquaintances, and so on. The process of recruiting is shown to behave like a new Reed–Frost-type network epidemic, in which 'becoming infected' corresponds to study participation. We calculate R0, the probability of a major 'outbreak', and the relative size of a major outbreak for c < ∞ in the limit of infinite population size and compare to the standard Reed–Frost epidemic. Our results indicate that c should often be chosen larger than in current practice.

We investigate the asymptotic sample path behaviour of a randomly perturbed discrete-time dynamical system. We consider the case where the trajectories of the non-perturbed dynamical system are attracted by a finite number of limit sets and characterize a case where this property remains valid for the perturbed dynamical system when the perturbation converges to zero. For this purpose, no further assumptions on the perturbation are needed and our main condition applies to the limit sets of the non-perturbed dynamical system. When the limit sets reduce to limit points we show that this main condition is more general than the usual assumption of the existence of a Lyapunov function for the non-perturbed dynamical system. An application to an epidemic model is given to illustrate our results.

Consider a population of distinct species Sj, j∈J, members of which are selected at different time points T1, T2,· ··, one at each time. Assume linear costs per unit of time and that a reward is earned at each discovery epoch of a new species. We treat the problem of finding a selection rule which maximizes the expected payoff. As the times between successive selections are supposed to be continuous random variables, we are dealing with a continuous-time optimal stopping problem which is the natural generalization of the one Rasmussen and Starr (1979) have investigated; namely, the corresponding problem with fixed times between successive selections. However, in contrast to their discrete-time setting the derivation of an optimal strategy appears to be much harder in our model as generally we are no longer in the monotone case.

This note gives a general point process formulation for this problem, leading in particular to an equivalent stopping problem via stochastic intensities which is easier to handle. Then we present a formal derivation of the optimal stopping time under the stronger assumption of i.i.d. (X1, A1) (X2, A2), · ·· where Xn gives the label (j for Sj) of the species selected at Tn and An denotes the time between the nth and (n – 1)th selection, i.e. An = Tn – Tn–1. In the case where even Xn and An are independent and An has an IFR (increasing failure rate) distribution, an explicit solution for the optimal strategy is derived as a simple consequence.

We observe a sequence {Xk}k≧1 of i.i.d. non-negative random variables one at a time. After each observation, we select or reject the observed variable. A variable that is rejected may not be recalled. We want to select N variables as soon as possible subject to the constraint that the sum of the N selected variables does not exceed some prescribed value C > 0. In this paper, we develop a sequential selection procedure that minimizes the expected number of observed variables, and we study some of its properties. We also consider the situation where N → ∞and C/N → α > 0. Some applications are briefly discussed.

The problem of estimating the exponent of a stable law is receiving an increasing amount of attention because Pareto's law (or Zipf's law) describes many biological phenomena very well (see e.g. Hill (1974)). This problem was first solved by Hill (1975), who proposed an estimate, and the convergence of that estimate to some positive and finite number was shown to be a characteristic of distribution functions belonging to the Fréchet domain of attraction (Mason (1982)). As a contribution to a complete theory of inference for the upper tail of a general distribution function, we give the asymptotic behavior (weak and strong) of Hill's estimate when the associated distribution function belongs to the Gumbel domain of attraction. Examples, applications and simulations are given.

For a spectrally negative Lévy process X, killed according to a rate that is a function ω of its position, we complement the recent findings of [12] by analysing (in greater generality) the exit probability of the one-sided upwards passage problem. When ω is strictly positive, this problem is related to the determination of the Laplace transform of the first passage time upwards for X that has been time-changed by the inverse of the additive functional $$\int_0^ \cdot \omega ({X_u}){\kern 1pt} {\rm{d}}u$$. In particular, our findings thus shed extra light on related results concerning first passage times downwards (resp. upwards) of continuous-state branching processes (resp. spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov processes).

It is well known that the number of renewals in the time interval [0, t] for an ordinary renewal process is approximately normally distributed under general conditions. We give a remainder term estimate for this normal distribution approximation.

The long-run average cost per unit time of operating a finite dam controlled by a policy (Lam Yeh (1985)) is determined when the cumulative input process is the integral of a Markov chain. A penalty cost which accrues continuously at a rate g(X(t)), where g is a bounded measurable function of the content, is also introduced. An example where the input rate is a two-state Markov chain is considered in detail to illustrate the computations.

Consider a population of fixed size consisting of N haploid individuals. Assume that this population evolves according to the two-allele neutral Moran model in mathematical genetics. Denote the two alleles by A1 and A2. Allow mutation from one type to another and let 0 < γ < 1 be the sum of mutation probabilities. All the information about the population is recorded by the Markov chain X = (X(t))t≥0 which counts the number of individuals of type A1. In this paper we study the time taken for the population to ‘reach’ stationarity (in the sense of separation and total variation distances) when initially all individuals are of one type. We show that after t∗ = Nγ-1logN + cN the separation distance between the law of X(t∗) and its stationary distribution converges to 1 - exp(-γe-γc) as N → ∞. For the total variation distance an asymptotic upper bound is obtained. The results depend on a particular duality, and couplings, between X and a genealogical process known as the lines of descent process.

A number of recent papers have exhibited classes of queueing networks, with batches of customers served and routed through the network, which have generalised product-form equilibrium distributions. In this paper we look at these from a new viewpoint. In particular we show that, under standard assumptions, for a network to possess an equilibrium distribution that factorises into a product form over the nodes of the network for all possible transition rates, it is necessary and sufficient that it be equivalent to a suitably-defined single-movement network. We consider also the form of the state space for such networks.

We study the asymptotics of the survival probability for the critical and decomposable branching processes in a random environment and prove Yaglom-type limit theorems for these processes. It is shown that such processes possess some properties having no analogues for the decomposable branching processes in a constant environment.

A class of non-negative alternating regenerative processes is considered, where the process stays at zero random time (waiting period), then it jumps to a random positive level and hits zero after some random period (life period), depending on the evolution of the process. It is assumed that the waiting time and the lifetime belong to the domain of attraction of stable laws with parameters in the interval (½,1]. An integral representation for the distribution functions of the regenerative process is obtained, using the spent time distributions of the corresponding alternating renewal process. Given the asymptotic behaviour of the process in the regenerative cycle, different types of limiting distributions are proved, applying some new results for the corresponding renewal process and two limit theorems for the convergence in distribution.
