We introduce a large and flexible class of discrete tempered stable distributions, and analyze the domains of attraction for both this class and the related class of positive tempered stable distributions. Our results suggest that these are natural models for sums of independent and identically distributed random variables with tempered heavy tails, i.e. tails that appear to be heavy up to a point, but ultimately decay faster.

The purpose of this paper is to provide explicit formulas for a variety of probabilistic quantities associated with an asymmetric random walk on a finite rectangular lattice with absorbing barriers. Quantities of interest include probabilities that a walker will exit the lattice onto some particular set of boundary states, the expected duration of the walk, and the expected number of visits to one state given a start in another. These quantities are shown to satisfy two-dimensional recurrence relations that are very similar in structure. In each case, the recurrence relations may be represented by matrix equations of the form X = AX + XB + C, where A and B are tridiagonal Toeplitz matrices. The spectral properties of A and B are investigated and used to provide solutions to this matrix equation. The solutions to the matrix equations then lead to solutions for the recurrence relations in very general cases.

We consider positive zero-sum stochastic games with countable state and action spaces. For each player, we provide a characterization of those strategies that are optimal in every subgame. These characterizations are used to prove two simplification results. We show that if player 2 has an optimal strategy then he/she also has a stationary optimal strategy, and prove the same for player 1 under the assumption that the state space and player 2's action space are finite.

In cell-size-dependent growth the probabilistic rate of division of a cell into daughter-cells and the rate of increase of its size depend on its size. In this paper the expected number of cells in the population at time t is calculated for a variety of models, and it is shown that population growths slower and faster than exponential are both possible. When the cell sizes are bounded conditions are given for exponential growth.

An infinite convergent sum of independent and identically distributed random variables discounted by a multiplicative random walk is called perpetuity, because of a possible actuarial application. We provide three disjoint groups of sufficient conditions which ensure that the right tail of a perpetuity ℙ{X > x} is asymptotic to axce-bx as x → ∞ for some a, b > 0, and c ∈ ℝ. Our results complement those of Denisov and Zwart (2007). As an auxiliary tool we provide criteria for the finiteness of the one-sided exponential moments of perpetuities. We give several examples in which the distributions of perpetuities are explicitly identified.

We consider a birth–death process {X(t),t≥0} on the positive integers for which the origin is an absorbing state with birth coefficients λn,n≥0, and death coefficients μn,n≥0. If we define A=∑n=1∞ 1/λnπn and S=∑n=1∞ (1/λnπn)∑i=n+1∞ πi, where {πn,n≥1} are the potential coefficients, it is a well-known fact (see van Doorn (1991)) that if A=∞ and S<∞, then λC>0 and there is precisely one quasistationary distribution, namely, {aj(λC)}, where λC is the decay parameter of {X(t),t≥0} in C={1,2,...} and aj(x)≡μ1-1πjxQj(x), j=1,2,.... In this paper we prove that there is a unique quasistationary distribution that attracts all initial distributions supported in C, if and only if the birth–death process {X(t),t≥0} satisfies bothA=∞ and S<∞. That is, for any probability measure M={mi, i=1,2,...}, we have limt→∞ℙM(X(t)=j∣ T>t)= aj(λC), j=1,2,..., where T=inf{t≥0 : X(t)=0} is the extinction time of {X(t),t≥0} if and only if the birth–death process {X(t),t≥0} satisfies both A=∞ and S<∞.

In a G/GI/c loss system with balking, reneging, or limited waiting space, deleting some of the arriving customers can either increase or decrease the fraction of the remaining arrivals who get served, depending on how customers are deleted. We present a model in which the random deletion of arrivals independently and with some fixed probability can never decrease the fraction of the remaining arrivals who get served.

Regular variation of distributional tails is known to be preserved by various linear transformations of some random structures. An inverse problem for regular variation aims at understanding whether the regular variation of a transformed random object is caused by regular variation of components of the original random structure. In this paper we build on previous work, and derive results in the multivariate case and in situations where regular variation is not restricted to one particular direction or quadrant.

This paper addresses the asymptotic analysis of sojourn functionals of spatiotemporal Gaussian random fields with long-range dependence (LRD) in time, also known as long memory. Specifically, reduction theorems are derived for local functionals of nonlinear transformation of such fields, with Hermite rank $m\geq 1,$ under general covariance structures. These results are proven to hold, in particular, for a family of nonseparable covariance structures belonging to the Gneiting class. For $m=2,$ under separability of the spatiotemporal covariance function in space and time, the properly normalized Minkowski functional, involving the modulus of a Gaussian random field, converges in distribution to the Rosenblatt-type limiting distribution for a suitable range of values of the long-memory parameter.

Molchan-Golosov fractional Lévy processes (MG-FLPs) are introduced by way of a multivariate componentwise Molchan-Golosov transformation based on an n-dimensional driving Lévy process. Using results of fractional calculus and infinitely divisible distributions, we are able to calculate the conditional characteristic function of integrals driven by MG-FLPs. This leads to important predictions concerning multivariate fractional Brownian motion, fractional subordinators, and general fractional stochastic differential equations. Examples are the fractional Lévy Ornstein-Uhlenbeck and Cox-Ingersoll-Ross models. As an application we present a fractional credit model with a long range dependent hazard rate and calculate bond prices.

Brown (1980), (1981) proved that the renewal function is concave if the interrenewal distribution is DFR (decreasing failure rate), and conjectured the converse. This note settles Brown's conjecture with a class of counterexamples. We also give a short proof of Shanthikumar's (1988) result that the DFR property is closed under geometric compounding.

In this paper we treat the general version of the semi-Markov storage model, introduced first by Senturia and Puri: transitions in the state of the system occur at a discrete sequence of time points, described by a two-state semi-Markov process. An input occurs at an instant of transition to state 1 and a demand for release occurs at an instant of transition to state 2.

Assuming general distributions for all the variables involved, we show that the dam contents just after the nth input converges properly in distribution as n →∞ under conditions of stability; likewise that after the nth demand. We also show that the demand lost due to shortage of stock, accumulated over instants of demand as well as over time, obeys a strong law and a central limit theorem.

Limit theorems for the thinning of renewal point processes according to two different schemes are studied. In the first scheme when a point is retained a random number of succeeding points are deleted. According to the second scheme a random number of points are deleted by an inhibitory Poisson process.

Using backward stochastic difference equations (BSDEs), this paper studies dynamic convex risk measures for risky positions in a simple discrete-time, binomial tree model. A relationship between BSDEs and dynamic convex risk measures is developed using nonlinear expectations. The time consistency of dynamic convex risk measures is discussed in the binomial tree framework. A relationship between prices and risks is also established. Two particular cases of dynamic convex risk measures, namely risk measures with stochastic distortions and entropic risk measures, and their mathematical properties are discussed.

The fluctuation of the counts of particles in m regions are used to yield an estimate of a fundamental motion parameter. The effect of varying m on the precision of the estimation method is considered. An exact analysis and simulation of the Fürth pedestrian vector process is presented.

The general stochastic epidemic model is used as a model for the spread of rumours. Recursive expressions are found for the mean of the final size of each generation of hearers. Simple expressions are found for the generation size and the asymptotic form of its final size in the deterministic model. An approximating process is presented.

The connection between the age distribution of a discrete-time Markov chain and a certain time-reversed Markov chain is exhibited. A method for finding properties of age distributions follows simply from this approach. The results, which have application in several areas in applied probability, are illustrated by examples from population genetics.

In this paper it is shown that the distribution of the instant of service of a customer is symmetric as between the distributions of service and interarrival time. Also U(t), the expected number of departures in (0, t), is a delayed renewal function for the GI/M/1 queue.

We establish an upper bound on the tails of a random variable that arises as a solution of a stochastic difference equation. In the nonnegative case our bound is similar to a lower bound obtained in Goldie and Grübel (1996).
