Introduction. Plant regeneration from in vitro culture of adult citrus tissue may help in early evaluation of important horticultural characteristics of genetic material from breeding programs, which incorporate biotechnological tools. Our research aimed to optimize in vitro culture conditions that could lead to the maximum plant regeneration through organogenesis of ‘Bahia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) in explants (internodes and foliar disc segments) collected from adult plants grown under greenhouse conditions. Materials and methods. Organogenesis was induced in internodes on DBA3 culture media supplemented with BAP at (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0) mg·L–1 combined with NAA (0.5 mg·L–1), and in foliar discs on culture media with BAP at (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) mg·L–1 combined or not with NAA (0.5 mg.L–1). Results and discussion. The concentrations of (1.0, 2.0 or 3.0) mg·L–1 of BAP combined with 0.5 mg·L–1 of NAA induced in vitro organogenesis in internodes of ‘Bahia’ sweet orange. The use of foliar discs was not efficient for adventitious organogenesis.

Introduction. Many shoots or bud-like structures are lost in the final stage of plant micropropagation because of being too short for handling. Yellow and red lights induce in vitro plant growth of some species, and blue light reduces it instead. Yellow cellophane film passes through from the yellow to red light spectrum but cuts off the blue one. Growth of banana in vitro shoots was thus compared with or without yellow-cellophane-film shading. Materials and methods. Field-grown banana normal and dwarf variant plants of Nanicão cv. (Musa sp., AAA group, Cavendish subgroup) derived from micropropagation were re-established in vitro. They were then transferred to MS medium without growth regulator in test tubes covered by yellow cellophane film under cool white fluorescent lamps at a light intensity of 46 μmol·m–2·s–1. Shoot growth was measured as height was evaluated after (20 and 30) days of culture. Results and discussion. The yellow-cellophane-film shading stimulated the growth of banana in vitro shoots. When cultured under the yellow-cellophane-film shading for 20 days, the normal true-to-type plants showed an increase of about 25% in shoot height compared with the plants cultured without cellophane film. Similar growth response was also observed on the in vitro shoots of the dwarf plants but the increment was only about 12%. This shading technique can aid shoot elongation and consequently reduction of plantlet loss at the final stage of plant micropropagation. The differing sensibility of the normal true-to-type plants and dwarf variants to the yellow-cellophane-film shading may be used for reduction of the dwarf variant population in banana micropropagation. Conclusion. Yellow-cellophane-film shading stimulates growth of banana in vitro shoots.

Introduction. Citrus canker, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, is a serious disease of most commercial citrus cultivars and some citrus relatives. Surveys were conducted in small-scale farms, commercial plantations, backyard orchards and nurseries in order to quantitatively study the occurrence and distribution of the disease and determine the intensity and field host range. Materials and methods. Seventeen locations in four regional states of Ethiopia were surveyed. Incidence on leaves was determined by counting total number of leaves and expressed as a proportion of leaves with at least one lesion. Incidence on fruits was determined on attached fruits, recorded as presence or absence of the symptoms. Severity was also measured on leaves and fruits. The identity of the pathogen was confirmed by morphological, biochemical and physiological characterization and detached leaf tests of representative isolates. Results. The surveys indicated the occurrence of citrus canker in Ethiopia. Overall incidence on leaves was 71.4% of leaves with at least one lesion and severity was 26.8% of leaf area infected. Incidence on fruits was 30% of fruits infected and severity was 21.25% fruit area infected. Morphological, biochemical and physiological characterization and detached leaf tests of isolates indicated characteristics similar to X. axonopodis pv. citri. The host range for citrus canker in Ethiopia was limited to Mexican lime (C. aurantifolia) and sour orange (C. aurantium). Based on the field host range and detached leaf tests, it appears that the X. axonopodis pv. citri variant that occurs in Ethiopia has similar host ranges to that of atypical Asiatic (Xac-A*) form. Canker severity significantly correlated with temperature but not with rainfall, elevation or tree age. Conclusion. This is the first confirmed report of the disease in Ethiopia.

Introduction. Les produits de l’agro-industrie représentent aujourd’hui une part importante et croissante des aliments consommés par l’homme. La transformation industrielle des productions agricoles réduit la densité nutritionnelle des produits transformés. Productions agricoles majeures. Les productions agricoles mondiales majeures sont pour une bonne part des matières premières pour l’agro-industrie. Ce sont principalement des céréales et les deux plantes sucrières majeures (canne à sucre et betterave). La disponibilité spatio-temporelle des produits transformés permet de répondre aux besoins caloriques et de lutter contre la faim. Or, pour l’entretien de la vie cellulaire et des équilibres physiologiques, il faut aussi consommer des micro-constituants dont les antioxydants, particulièrement communs et abondants dans les fruits et légumes. Fruits, légumes et santé. La consommation des fruits et légumes, sous des formes fraîches ou peu raffinées, est favorable à la protection de la santé du consommateur. Huiles, aromates et santé. Les oléagineux et les aromates contiennent aussi des substances pouvant contribuer à protéger la santé. Des connaissances sont à développer pour une meilleure intégration des huiles et aromates dans les préparations culinaires. Antioxydants et biodiversité. Leur connaissance peut être favorisée par l’essor et la mise en synergie des techniques et outils analytiques, de la physiologie du développement des végétaux, de la nutrition et de la physiologie humaine. La zone intertropicale américaine constitue une aire ressource particulièrement riche. Conclusion et perspectives. Il y a opportunité à rechercher, dans la biodiversité végétale, des espèces d’intérêt pour la protection de la santé du consommateur. Il faut réaliser une démarche intégrative allant de la ressource génétique aux produits transformés.

Introduction. Ricinodendron heudelotii Baill. est une essence forestière en voie de domestication au Cameroun où la plante est appréciée pour ses vertus alimentaires, écologiques et médicinales. Les dégâts causés par le psylle Diclidophlebia xuani Messi et al. aux jeunes plants, en pépinière ou après leur plantation, constituent l’une des principales contraintes à la domestication de l’espèce. La biologie de ce ravageur a donc été étudiée afin d’envisager son contrôle. Matériel et méthodes. Différents aspects de la biologie de D. xuani ont été abordés : processus d’accouplement, choix du site de ponte par la femelle, maturation sexuelle des imagos, fécondité des femelles, longévité des imagos, développement embryonnaire et larvaire, sex-ratio à l’émergence et spécificité alimentaire. Les expérimentations ont eu lieu dans la région de Yaoundé soit en champ, soit en milieu contrôlé durant les années 2001 et 2002. Résultats et discussion. Les mâles de D. xuani ont émergé avant les femelles et le rapprochement des sexes a eu lieu 15 min environ après la mue imaginale. La longévité des femelles a été de 29 jours en moyenne, celle des mâles, de 7 jours. La ponte a commencé 3 jours après l’émergence et s’est poursuivie jusqu’à la fin de la vie de la femelle. En période chaude (28 °C environ), une femelle a pondu en moyenne 532 œufs pendant toute sa vie ; en période de basses températures (24 °C à 26 °C environ), la fécondité moyenne a été de 758 œufs. Les œufs sont essentiellement déposés sur les étages foliaires les plus jeunes de R. heudelotii. Les développements embryonnaire et larvaire ont duré respectivement 7 jours et 22 jours environ. Le cycle de développement, d’œuf à œuf, a nécessité 32 jours en moyenne. Le sex-ratio a été proche de 1. Conclusion. D. xuani se développe entièrement et sans interruption sur R. heudelotii ; il n’a jamais été rencontré sur d’autres espèces de plantes. Il serait donc étroitement associé à cette plante.

Introduction. Les dommages provoqués par la cercosporiose des agrumes, dus à Phaeoramularia angolensis, sont à l'origine de pertes de récolte ou d'écarts de tri pouvant varier entre (50 et 100) % de la production. Or tous les organes attaqués par la maladie - pétales des fleurs, feuilles et surtout peau des fruits - renferment des huiles essentielles à haute valeur marchande. Une étude a été réalisée pour connaître l'influence des attaques de cette maladie sur le rendement d'extraction et la qualité des huiles essentielles de peau d'orange. Matériels et méthodes. L'extraction d'huile essentielle a été réalisée par hydrodistillation à partir de fruits récoltés à maturité et les extraits ont été analysés par chromatographie en phase gazeuse afin de déterminer leur composition chimique. Résultats et discussion. Le rendement d'extraction des huiles essentielles a diminué en fonction de la gravité des attaques (jusqu'à 40 % de baisse). Cette baisse n'a été significative que lorsque les attaques dépassaient deux lésions par fruit. Les extraits obtenus de fruits attaqués à divers degrés ont présenté quelques variations quantitatives de leurs constituants. Une diminution de certains composés dans les fruits malades s'est accompagnée d'une augmentation de leur forme oxygénée. L'augmentation de la quantité globale d'aldéhydes a été observée dans les fruits malades, ce qui pourrait se traduire par une amélioration de la qualité des huiles essentielles. Mais, en même temps, les oxydes caractéristiques de la dégradation de ces huiles essentielles ont augmenté. Conclusion. Ce travail qui doit être approfondi a permis d'acquérir de premières données sur les pertes de rendement et l'évolution de la composition des huiles essentielles de peau de fruits pouvant être attribuées aux attaques de la cercosporiose.

Introduction. Tejocote (Crataegus spp.) is an edible fruit species that some Mesoamerican cultures have cultivated since pre-Hispanic times in Mexico; however, this fruit crop has not undergone formal breeding. It is unknown whether morphological markers associated with fruit size exist to be used for indirect selection; this could be important, because this species has a large cycle. Our research aimed at studying phenotypic correlations between leaf and stomata characters with fruit weight; such correlations might be used as morphological markers for selection of superior germplasm for fruit weight. Materials and methods. Pearson’s correlation coefficients of 36 leaf variables and three leaf stomata variables with fruit weight were calculated in 94 genotypes of four different species. Results. As expected, the correlations calculated for each species and for the species pool differed. However, the number of veins in leaves of reproductive shoots was positively correlated with fruit weight (P ≤ 0.05) in the two most important horticultural species. On the other hand, C. mexicana was the best option for selecting superior germplasm, and the most significant variables correlated with fruit weight in this species were leaf major axis length of large vegetative shoots, leaf elongation ratio and number of veins of reproductive shoot leaves. Discussion. These variables could be good selection indices or morphological markers that can be used for early screening of germplasm for yield potential.

Introduction. L’anacardier (Anacardium occidentale L.) est surtout cultivé pour la production de l’amande ou noix de cajou mais aussi pour le pseudofruit. Les insectes nuisibles à cette plante ont été étudiés au Pérou où celui-ci est consommé. Matériel et méthodes. Des prélèvements ont été réalisés de 1998 à 2005 dans différentes localités du département de Loreto en Amazonie péruvienne afin d’identifier les insectes ravageurs de l’anarcadier. Des observations de terrain et des élevages au laboratoire ont permis de caractériser leurs dégâts et des éléments de la bio-écologie pour chacun de ces insectes. Résultats. Sept espèces d’insectes ont été identifiées, qui commettent des dommages notables : cinq espèces s’attaquent au pseudofruit : Acanthocephala parensis (Hemiptera : Coreidae), Anastrepha obliqua (Diptera : Tephritidae), Conotrachelus sp. (Coleoptera : Curculionidae), Trigona amalthea et T. amazonensis (Hymenoptera : Apidae). L’espèce Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera : Aphididae) infeste l’inflorescence ainsi que le fruit. Les larves de Macrocopturus cf. tristis (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) se développent dans les bourgeons et les jeunes rameaux. Trois espèces parmi celles qui ont été identifiées sont de nouveaux ravageurs qui n’avaient pas été encore signalés. Sept espèces d’importance secondaire ont également été observées. Conclusion. Compte-tenu du potentiel que représente la production de pomme cajou et du développement possible de la culture de l’anacardier en Amazonie péruvienne, une étude plus approfondie des insectes nuisibles à cette production est souhaitable.

Introduction. A recent laboratory study demonstrated a negative correlation between the ethylene production of fruit during ripening and the length of their commercial life. The aim of our work was to determine whether there is a putative relationship between ethylene production of fruit during ripening and the length of the growth period before ripening. A positive answer would make this an important parameter for early selection in breeding programs. Materials and Methods. Four banana varieties representing a broad range of growth period lengths were studied. Ethylene biosynthesis was examined through ethylene productionand content in free 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC)—the immediate precursor of the hormone—during fruit development and ripening. Fruit ripening was totally achieved on the plant. Results. Ethylene production started to be detected at the breaker stage. It peaked at the “fully dark-yellow–extremities included” stage for all varieties. Two varieties, i.e., Sowmuk and IDN 110, presented the highest production levels [(26 and 19) µL ethylene·h–1·kg–1 of fresh weight at peak, respectively). Galéo and Grande Naine had lower ethylene yields. The two most productive varieties also presented a drastic increase in free ACC at ripening onset. Conclusion. There is no relationship between ethylene production of bananas ripened on the plant and the length of the fruit growth period prior to ripening onset.

Introduction. La fermeté du fruit et la teneur en amidon de la pulpe sont deux critères physico-chimiques d’un grand intérêt pour un fruit climactérique comme la mangue. Ils constituent deux bons indicateurs de la maturité des fruits à la cueillette, et de leur degré de maturation en cours de conservation. À notre connaissance, peu d’études font le lien entre la teneur en amidon de la pulpe, composé majeur de la mangue au stade de la cueillette, et la fermeté du fruit. Matériel et méthodes. Deux méthodes d’évaluation de la fermeté du fruit entier ont été mises en œuvre : une méthode pénétrométrique destructive permettant d’accéder à la force développée pour pénétrer le fruit jusqu’à une profondeur de 5,5 mm (F5) et une méthode acoustique impulsionnelle non destructive permettant de déterminer un coefficient global d’élasticité (E) du fruit. La teneur en amidon a été déterminée sur un échantillon, représentatif de la pulpe entière du fruit, traité par hydrolyse acide puis enzymatique. Le glucose libéré a été dosé par chromatographie ionique. Les essais ont été réalisés sur 133 fruits au total, appartenant à deux populations de mangues des variétés Keitt et Amélie et couvrant une gamme étendue de maturité. Résultats et discussion. La teneur en amidon de la pulpe se révèle bien corrélée aux deux paramètres de fermeté F5 et E mesurés sur fruit entier. Les meilleurs coefficients de corrélation ont été obtenus pour la population de mangues Keitt (r = 0,89 pour E ; r = 0,88 pour F5) et pour la population rassemblant l’ensemble des fruits des deux variétés (r = 0,83 pour E ; r = 0,76 pour F5). La variété Amélie se distingue par un faible coefficient de corrélation entre la teneur en amidon et la fermeté pénétrométrique F5 (r = 0,60), le coefficient d’élasticité E demeurant encore relativement bien corrélé à la teneur en amidon (r = 0,75). Conclusion. La méthode acoustique impulsionnelle peut constituer un outil intéressant capable d’apprécier, de manière non destructive, le potentiel de conservation des fruits par l’évaluation concomitante de la fermeté globale du fruit et de la teneur résiduelle en amidon de sa pulpe. Le coefficient de corrélation observé entre le coefficient d’élasticité E et la teneur en amidon diffère selon la variété de mangue. Lorsque ce coefficient de corrélation est élevé, la technique acoustique impulsionnelle peut donner, indirectement, d’aussi bonnes informations sur le niveau de dégradation de l’amidon dans le fruit en cours de conservation qu’une méthode destructive comme celle du test à l’iode.

Introduction. The Tephritidae Ceratitis capitata is one of the most important agricultural pests in the world. Eradication programmes need as much genetic information as possible to be efficient. It is vital to know the genetic variation that exists in the areas thought to have been important in the expansion of the species, such as the Iberian Peninsula. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic structure of Spanish C. capitata populations and the relationships between them. Materials and methods. We studied the genetic variability of populations of C. capitata (eight wild samples and one laboratory strain) through the use of the horizontal starch gel electrophoresis technique and the assay of fifteen enzyme-coding loci chosen at random. Results. The quantity of variability detected in this polyphagous species was not high. Of the 15 loci studied, only four were clearly polymorphic. No significant differences were found in any comparison of populations collected from different hosts. Discussion. The distribution patterns of this variation seem to be the result of gene flow and selection in the form of agricultural practices.

Introduction. Shanxi province is one of the main walnut production areas in the North of China. The cultivated species mainly belong to a Chinese walnut tree population, named ‘Mian Hetao’ (Juglans regia L.), which reproduces from seedlings. Although the walnut apomixis characteristics were discovered very early and have an important breeding value, this variety has not yet been reported as an important breeding resource. Cultivar origin. ‘Qinquan 1’ is a new cultivar of walnut tree (Juglans regia L.), selected in 1982 from walnut seedling resources in the department of Shanxi, in the North of China. This cultivar is characterized by apomixis, the ratio of which can reach 24.7%. After more than 20 years of selection and many local experiments, its characteristics were given and the cultivar was certificated in March 2007. Cultivar characteristics. Characteristics of ‘Qinquan 1’ fruits, trees, development stages, production and the apomixis rate are given. Main cultural techniques. Many characteristics of this new cultivar are suitable for its growth in the middle or south Loess Highlands (China), where the annual average temperature is 9~13 °C and rainfall is above 450 mm. The cultivar is also cultivable in the North of China where the soil and climate conditions resemble those of the original area. Other recommendations are given for improving the ‘Qinquan 1’ tree growth.

Introduction. The techniques presented allow a long-term conservation of Cylindrocladium strains to preserve them from major morphological and physiological changes. The principle of the methods applied, key advantages, starting plant material, time required and expected results are presented. Materials and methods. The necessary laboratory materials, and details of the nine steps achieved for the monospore purification of Cylindrocladium strains, their long-term maintenance, and the production of conidia and microsclerotia are described. Results. When revived, purified strains generate actively growing colonies within 48–72 h. Such colonies can then be readily used for conidia or microsclerotia production.

Introduction. Rambutan is a tropical fruit species with recalcitrant seeds. Despite the expansion of exotic fruit cultivation in Brazil, lots of which fruit species, including rambutan, need basic information, especially in relation to propagation and storage of seeds, which are important for genetic improvement studies, maintenance of genetic sources and seedling production. Materials and methods. A completely randomized design was adopted with treatments distributed in a factorial arrangement, 3 × 4, referring to three seed storage conditions [room temperature conditions; a dry chamber with (18 ± 2) °C and 60% relative humidity; and a cold chamber with (10 ± 2) °C and 70% relative humidity] and four storage times (0, 7, 14 and 21 d). Each treatment of 10 seeds was replicated five times. Data on seedling emergence, emergence rate, plant height, number of leaves and length of main root were submitted to variance analysis and means were separated using Tukey’s test. Correlation analysis between seed moisture and seedling emergence was performed. Results and discussion. Our results indicated that dry chamber conditions promoted the statistically significantly highest seedling emergence after 7 d of storage. Cold chamber conditions promoted an extremely low seedling emergence independently of time. Conclusion. Rambutan seeds can be stored in a dry chamber for 7 d without losing viability; after 14 d of storage the loss of emergence is 60%.

Introduction. Aux Antilles, l’introduction de la jachère, dont l’utilité dans la maîtrise du parasitisme tellurique est avérée, est à l’ordre du jour du fait de l’explosion du parasitisme lié à la monoculture bananière. Comme cette pratique est soutenue par la recherche et les pouvoirs publics, l’étude entreprise a eu pour but d’analyser les écarts entre les préconisations portées par un dispositif institutionnel et les pratiques des agriculteurs afin d’identifier à quelles conditions les pratiques de jachère peuvent être mises en place. Méthodologie. Les déterminants et fonctions attribués aux jachères ainsi que les freins ont été abordés à partir d’enquêtes auprès d’exploitants. Celles-ci ont permis de recueillir entre autres les variables nécessaires à la caractérisation des règles de décision en matière de gestion des assolements et de contraintes endogènes à l’exploitation. Le choix des exploitations enquêtées nous a conduits à étudier les pratiques de jachères dans le cadre d’une typologie d’exploitation distinguant, parmi 42 exploitations étudiées, les types, « Diversifié », « Bananier familial » et « Bananier entrepreneurial ». Ces types sont représentatifs des exploitations de moins de 20 ha. Le cas de la jachère en Guadeloupe. Les résultats ont montré que la jachère est présente chez plus de la moitié des exploitants enquêtés. Sa situation varie avec les types d’exploitation ; elle est soit subie, soit intégrée dans les systèmes de culture. Les modes de conduites sont fonctions des objectifs des exploitants : assainissement, pâturage, gestion de la trésorerie, etc. Les freins au développement des jachères sont nombreux : manque de surface, difficulté de raisonner à long terme, manque à gagner sur une terre qui ne « produit » pas, etc. Cependant les calculs économiques sur des systèmes de culture incluant la jachère montrent que leurs marges brutes sont supérieures à celles trouvées pour des bananeraies continues et pérennes. La principale contrainte est rencontrée au moment du changement de système cultural lorsque l’exploitant doit faire face à une terre qui ne procurera un supplément de rendement que deux ans plus tard. Discussion et conclusion. Notre étude a mis en évidence que la multiplicité des pratiques de jachère, pertinentes au regard des objectifs des exploitants, n’est qu’en partie prise en compte dans les dispositifs institutionnels existants. Cela appelle une diversification des référentiels techniques.

Introduction. La tuberculose de l'olivier est une maladie bactérienne signalée pour la première fois au Maroc en 1960 ; elle y est maintenant répandue dans toutes les aires de culture de l'olivier. La maladie agit sur la croissance des repousses et elle affecte les organes reproducteurs. L'intensité des dégâts provoqués est fortement liée au nombre de tumeurs par arbre. Or, le comptage systématique des tumeurs sur tous les arbres, qui permet de décider du traitement d'un verger, est très difficilement réalisable. C'est pourquoi une technique fiable de prédiction du degré d'attaque à partir de l'observation d'un échantillon réduit d'arbres a été recherchée. Matériel et méthodes. Vingt arbres de la variété sensible `Meslala', âgés de 35 ans et de même phénotype ont été choisis au hasard. Le nombre de tumeurs par arbre a été systématiquement compté sur chacun de ces arbres, puis sur six unités structurales (us) par arbre. Les moyennes du nombre de tumeurs comptées sur 2, 3, 4 ou 5 (us) par arbre ont été ensuite successivement comparées deux à deux à la moyenne du nombre de tumeurs comptées sur les six (us) préalablement repérées sur l'arbre afin de définir le nombre minimal d'(us) utilisables pour les estimations. Une droite de régression correspondant à un modèle d'estimation du degré d'attaque des oliviers par la tuberculose a finalement été tracée à partir des comptages effectués. Résultats. Le modèle de régression linéaire déterminé permet d'estimer le degré d'attaque d'un verger donné en fonction de la moyenne du nombre de tumeurs dénombrées sur quatre (us) choisies par arbre parmi un lot de 20 arbres, et du nombre d'(us) comptés sur chacun de ces 20 arbres. Discussion et conclusion. Le modèle de régression défini constitue une technique fiable pour évaluer les dégâts de la tuberculose à l'échelle d'un champ d'oliviers sans avoir recours au comptage systématique des tumeurs sur tous les arbres du verger.

Introduction. Mango producers of two important growing areas of the states of Guerrero and Michoacán, Mexico, reported extensive damage in mango trees caused by an abundant mycelial growth covering most diseased panicles of mango trees cv. Haden. Materials and methods. The fungus was isolated from panicles of mango. Pathogenicity was evaluated in the orchard by inoculating 20 inflorescences protected by cellophane paper bags. In vitro characterization was evaluated on monosporic cultures; conidial morphology and rate of growth were determined. A molecular characterization by DNA extraction was carried out to identify the microorganism. Results. Cladosporium tenuissimum caused necrosis of flowers, pedicels and small fruits on inoculated mango panicles cv. Haden in the long coast of Guerrero and Michoacan States of Mexico. The affected organs were covered with grey cottony mycelia and an olivaceous, green to grey sporulation. In vitro, young colonies were also olive green and velvety, turning dark green to grey with a whitish outer margin. The growth rate of colonies was 0.46 cm·day–1. Conidia were subspherical, lime-shaped and fusiform, olivaceous in color with visible scars and denticle-like extensions. The mean size of conidia was (5.85 × 2.93) µm with variations of 3.2–23 µm × 1.98–5.47 µm. The molecular characteristics rendered C. tenuissimum after identification. Symptoms of inoculated or naturally infected tree organs were similar. A diagrammatic scale was developed for the evaluation of disease severity, which varied from 69% to 100% in infected panicles. The organs were susceptible from blooming to fruit set. Discussion. Further research is proposed to evaluate the geographical distribution of C. tenuissimum in the production areas of mango with the concomitant evaluations of strategies of control.

Introduction. This protocol aims at detecting Cylindrocladium spp. in root and soil samples from banana fields and at quantifying the inoculum. The principle of the two methods applied [Root Slice Plating Method (RSPM) and Soil Isolation Method (SIM)], the key advantages of these methods, starting plant and soil materials, the time required and the expected results are presented. Materials and methods. Necessary laboratory materials, and details of the six steps achieved for the use of the two methods are described. Results. When using the RSPM, typical Cylindrocladium colonies are isolated in petri dishes. When using the SIM, typical Cylindrocladium colonies originate from microsclerotia embedded or not in banana root tissue. The inoculum density can be calculated.

Introduction. Camu-camu is a native Amazonian fruit mainly known for its high vitamin C content. Its composition confers high antioxidant capacity on this fruit and makes it a potential source of antioxidant products. The use of spray-drying with the aid of a carrier agent is a technique that has been applied for the preservation of important components of foods and drugs. The objective of our work was to evaluate the influence of those agents used as shell material on the vitamin content and total phenolic compounds of camu-camu powder juice obtained by spray-drying. Materials and methods. A commercial frozen camu-camu pulp was the raw material; maltodextrin and gum arabic were the selected carrier agents. Processes were performed in a mini-spray-dryer with inlet and outlet air temperatures of 180 °C and 85 °C, respectively, and a drying air flow rate of 700 L·h–1. Laser diffraction was used to determine the particle size distribution of the samples, and sorption isotherms of spray-dried camu-camu were measured using a static gravimetric method. Total phenolic compounds and vitamin C were determined in the raw pulp and in the powders obtained. Results. When using gum arabic and maltodextrin as the carrier agents, the moisture results obtained for the spray-dried camu-camu powders were 2.8% and 3.2%, respectively; the process yield was 84% and 72%, respectively. The spray-dried powder produced using gum arabic presented higher contents of vitamin C [(15,363 ± 226) mg·100 g–1] and phenolic compounds [(6,654 ± 596) mg GAE·100 g–1] than the powder obtained with maltodextrin, respectively (11,258 ± 298) mg·100 g–1 and (5,912 ± 582) mg GAE·100 g–1. Conclusions. The concentration factors for the vitamin C and phenolic compounds in camu-camu powder reveal the effectiveness of spray-drying to preserve the antioxidant capacity of this fruit. Gum arabic was a more effective barrier than maltodextrin for bioactive compound retention.
