Introduction. Les agrumes sont sensibles à la salinité. Notre étude a cherché à sélectionner, chez le citrange Troyer, des lignées cellulaires tolérantes à NaCl, à évaluer l’effet du sel sur la croissance des cals et à doser les solutés susceptibles d’être impliqués dans leur réponse au stress salin. Matériel et méthodes. Des cals ont été cultivés sur un milieu de culture contenant du NaCl dont la concentration a été augmentée progressivement jusqu’à atteindre 8 g NaCl·L–1. Ils ont ensuite été transférés sur un milieu sans NaCl pour tester leur indépendance vis-à-vis du sel, puis remis en présence de 8 g NaCl·L–1 pour tester leur stabilité. Des dosages de solutés (Na+, K+, proline et sucres solubles) contenus dans les cals ont été effectués à la fin de l’expérimentation. Résultats et discussion. La salinité a ralenti la croissance et provoqué le brunissement de la plupart des explants (cals sensibles). Les cals tolérants ont présenté une croissance comparable à celle des témoins. Le transfert de ces cals sur un milieu sans NaCl suivi de leur remise en culture sur milieu salin a démontré l’indépendance et la stabilité du caractère de tolérance sélectionné. La teneur en K+ des cals tolérants a été voisine de celle des cals témoins, mais plus élevée que celle des cals sensibles. En revanche, la teneur en ions Na+ des cals tolérants et sensibles a été relativement plus élevée que celle des témoins. Le sodium s’accumulerait donc à deux niveaux cellulaires selon le type de cals : envahissement du cytosol (effet toxique) pour les cals sensibles ou compartimentage vacuolaire pour les cals tolérants. La salinité a provoqué l’accumulation de proline et de sucres solubles dans les cals tolérants mais pas dans les cals sensibles. Conclusions. Des lignées cellulaires stables et tolérantes au NaCl ont été obtenues à partir d’embryons de citrange Troyer. Cette tolérance pourrait être liée à des changements dans les propriétés de transport des ions et dans la capacité de régulation et de compartimentage ionique. L’accumulation de solutés organiques constitue un caractère métabolique à valeur adaptative qui pourrait être un indicateur de tolérance au stress salin des cals.

Introduction. Sclerocarya birrea (Anacardiaceae) est une espèce dont les fruits font l’objet d’un important commerce au Sahel. Son amélioration à travers les programmes d’hybridation est entravée par l’absence d’informations sur sa stratégie de reproduction. Nos travaux ont étudié l’anatomie florale de l’espèce au sein d’un essai de quatre provenances ouest-africaines mis en place dans la forêt de Gonsé (Burkina Faso). Matériel et méthode. L’échantillonnage a porté sur 100 fleurs de chaque provenance. Nous avons observé la morphologie des fleurs mâles et des fleurs hermaphrodites à la loupe binoculaire, compté les différentes formes du pistil en fonction des diverses provenances et étudié, par coloration à la fushine, la viabilité in vitro des grains de pollen issus d’individus mâles et d’individus hermaphrodites. Résultats. Les populations sahéliennes de Sclerocarya birrea se sont révélées androdioïques. Les fleurs hermaphrodites montrent un ovaire volumineux surmonté de un, deux ou trois stigmates distincts à style court. Leurs grains de pollen sont viables in vitro et ils ont les mêmes caractéristiques morphologiques que ceux des fleurs mâles. Discussion et conclusion. L’androdioécie morphologique mise en évidence pourrait avoir une fonction adaptative en palliant l’insuffisance de pollinisation. Elle pourrait être exploitée pour des programmes d’hybridation et pour la conception des plans d’aménagement.

Introduction. Fruit and vegetable consumption is now more than ever before understood, along with physical exercise, to be among the factors ensuring well-being. Cross-cultural epidemiological studies reveal a preventive effect of this consumption on certain human pathologies, whence the emergence of preventive nutrition. Changes in biodiversity dietary intake. Industrially-processed products, undergoing a greater or lesser degree of refinement, were developed during the last century; they focused on a few productive species and varieties. The concept of high-calorie foods, an energy source, which has been prevalent in dietetics over the past few decades, had minimised the role of fruit and vegetables in the diet, due to their low calorie content. Plant biodiversity in foodstuffs originating from the American tropics. There are few cultivated major species and varieties in terms of biodiversity. 40% of the edible plant species in the world today originate from the American tropics. Of the planet's 250 000 estimated plant species, 100 000 are believed to be from the Americas. Preserving the beneficial properties of processed products. To improve recovery of the properties of the fresh resource for the consumer, innovation in the processing methods is required, with unit operations ensuring the best possible preservation of the healthy compounds. Conclusion and prospects. Communication on fruit and vegetables has not enjoyed the same research and publicity resources as many processed products. Knowledge of and information on food resources, diet and health have become a major challenge. The relative wealth of the plant biodiversity from the American tropics represents a heritage we need to reharness.

Introduction. This protocol applies to the characterization of genome structure and evolution of M. acuminata and M. balbisiana genomes; construction of physical maps around markers of interest and QTLs; comparative genomic studies with other monocot species; and study of banana streak virus (BSV) integration patterns in banana nuclear genomes. The principle, key advantages, starting plant material, time required and expected results are presented. Materials and methods. This part describes the required materials, and the protocols for isolation and lysis of banana nuclei; high-molecular-weight (HMW) DNA Hind III digestion and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis; large-scale HMW DNA Hind III digestion and ligation to the pINDIGOBAC–5 vector; and analysis of recombinant BAC clones. It mentions the main problems which can occur. Results. The described protocols will enable the efficient construction of BAC libraries from Musa species. These libraries can be used to construct physical maps and select specific genomic regions to be sequenced.

Introduction. Notre étude a porté sur l’identification des insectes nuisibles des fruits de jujubiers indiens introduits au Burkina Faso. Notre objectif a été de faire l’inventaire de ces insectes ravageurs inféodés à ces nouveaux cultivars de jujubiers et de tester diverses techniques pour leur piégeage. Après identification des insectes dont la plante hôte est le jujubier, nous avons déterminé ceux qui accomplissent leur cycle de reproduction sur les jujubes. Matériel et méthodes. Nous avons utilisé des appâts alimentaires avec des pièges de fabrication industrielle renfermant du torula et du terpinyl acétate et testé l’efficacité de complexes [pièges artisanaux / attractifs naturels] par rapport aux pièges à torula. Ensuite, nous avons mis en incubation des fruits attaqués afin d’identifier les insectes qui en émergeraient. La fluctuation des populations de Tephritidae a été suivie à partir de relevés hebdomadaires dans les pièges à torula. Simultanément l’évolution de la production fruitière a été étudiée. Résultats. L’inventaire effectué en verger de jujubiers indiens a révélé la présence de plusieurs familles appartenant à l’ordre des diptères parmi lesquelles figurent dix espèces de mouches de fruits réparties dans quatre genres (Bactrocera, Dacus, Ceratitis et Carpomya) ; une noctuelle de l’ordre des lépidoptères (genre Agrotis) a également été identifiée. Les espèces les plus représentées dans les collectes effectuées par pièges ont été Carpomya incompleta (44,86 %), Bactrocera invadens (21,58 %) et Bactrocera cucurbitae (18,49 %). Le taux d’émergence après incubation des jujubes attaqués a été de 50 %. Deux espèces seulement ont émergé de ces fruits : C. incompleta (84 %) et Agrostis sp. (16 %). Parmi les appâts alimentaires naturels testés, seul le mélange [bière locale + banane] a permis de piéger des Tephritidae (Bactrocera invadens) et la noctuelle Agrotis sp. Cependant, deux autres appâts naturels (fruits en putréfaction et lait concentré) ont permis de capturer Agrotis sp. Discussion et conclusion. Nos résultats ont mis en évidence les deux ravageurs potentiels des jujubiers indiens au Burkina Faso. Des études complémentaires sur l’identification de l’espèce d’Agrotis, et sur la biologie, l’écologie et le comportement des ravageurs incriminés seront nécessaires pour la définition de méthodes de lutte en plantations de jujubiers au Burkina.

Introduction. The jabuticaba tree (Myrciaria jabuticaba) belongs to the Myrtaceae family and produces a small fruit, native to central, southern and southeastern Brazil. Materials and methods. Fruits of 25 progenies of the jabuticaba tree, grown in a tropical highland climate, were evaluated as to physical, physicochemical and chemical characteristics: weight, longitudinal and transverse diameters, pulp and peel yields, seed mass, number of seeds per fruit, pulp and peel moisture, soluble solids, titratable acidity, [soluble solids/titratable acidity] ratio, pH, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. The experimental design was completely randomized, the treatments being the 25 jabuticaba tree progenies. Results. A significant effect among progenies was observed for all characteristics evaluated. The chemical composition showed that the jabuticaba peel has a high phenolic compound content, and considerable flavonoid content. These results indicate that there is variability for the characteristics analyzed, enabling the economic exploitation of jabuticaba tree fruits for in natura consumption and processing. Conclusions. The physical and chemical characteristics combined can be proposed as excellent tools to select superior progenies. The fruits of five progenies showed desirable characteristics for the in natura market, while fruits of five other progenies hold high concentrations of natural antioxidants and may be listed as excellent options for the food industry.

Introduction. This protocol aims at evaluating (a) the efficacy of new fungicides for the control of post-harvest diseases, (b) the efficacy of various application methods for the chemical control of post-harvest diseases, and (c) the quality of the fungicide solution during the same packing day where this solution is recycled. The principle, key advantages, starting plant material, time required and expected results are presented. Materials and methods. Materials required and details of the eighteen steps of the protocol (fruit sampling and inoculum preparation, wound anthracnose study, quiescent anthracnose study, and crown-rot study) are described. Results. Comparison between untreated control bananas and bananas treated with fungicide allows the calculation of the fungicide treatment efficacy.

Introduction. Bacterial canker, caused by Pseudomonassyringae pv. syringae, is a damaging disease of stone fruitworldwide. The effects of rootstock, temperature and incubation duration on bacterialcanker in peach were assessed using both field and laboratory inoculation assays.Materials and methods. Both field and laboratory experiments were conductedto study the effects of rootstock, temperature and incubation duration on disease severityin peach. All inoculations were achieved with P. syringae pv.syringae strain B3A. Bacterial inoculations were applied to 1-year-oldshoots of peach trees [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch]. After inoculation,the inoculated shoots were allowed to incubate either under field conditions or in a coldroom at different temperatures [constantly at 0 °C, constantly at 14.4 °C, and in afluctuating temperature regime of 12 h at 0 °C (night) and 12 h at 14.4 °C (day)] forexcised shoots. The lesions were determined 1 to 6 weeks after inoculation to determinethe effect of incubation duration. Results and discussion. The fieldexperiment using peach grafted on three rootstocks (Nemaguard, K119-50 and P30-135) showedthat shoots on Nemaguard developed the longest lesions and shoots on K119-50 the shortestamong all three rootstocks. Shoots on Nemaguard had significantly lower bark calcium andhigher nitrogen concentrations than those on K119-50 and P30-135. A negative correlationwas found between lesion length and bark calcium concentration and the [calcium/ nitrogen] ratio. Laboratory experiments with excised shoots on Nemaguard, K119-50,P30-135, Lovell and Guardian rootstocks growing in a second orchard showed inconsistentresults. Shoots from Nemaguard developed significantly smaller lesions than those onK119-50 and P30-135. Shoots on Guardian and Lovell also developed significantly smallerlesions than those of shoots on K119-50 and P30-135. Temperature fluctuation duringincubation (0 °C to 14.4 °C) had no effect on shoot lesion length compared with thoseincubated constantly at 14.4 °C, but produced significantly longer lesions than shootsincubated constantly at 0 °C. These inconsistent results suggest that, in the absence ofmajor predisposing factors (i.e., ring nematodes or low soil pH),rootstocks may play a minor role in peach susceptibility to bacterial canker even underfavorable disease development conditions.

Introduction. Jusqu'à présent, les recherches entreprises en Algérie pour contrôler P. citrella Stainton ou mineuse des agrumes, parasite responsable de nombreux dégâts sur agrumes, ont été très limitées. Une étude sur la dynamique des populations du parasite et l'impact de son complexe parasitaire a été entreprise pendant trois années, dans l'Est de la Mitidja en Algérie. Matériel et méthodes. Des échantillonnages ont été effectués, de 1996 à 1998, deux fois par mois sur deux vergers, l'un de citronniers, l'autre d'orangers. Des dénombrements aléatoires ont été faits sur 500 feuilles par prélèvement. Au laboratoire, les différents stades de développement de la mineuse et leur état (vivants, morts ou parasités) ont été notés par face foliaire et par orientation des rameaux échantillonnés. Résultats et discussion. Une forte contamination par P. citrella a été observée en été et au début de l'automne. Les pousses printanières ont été partiellement contaminées en 1996 et 1997 et pratiquement indemnes en 1998. Le taux de mortalité des populations a été très important en 1997 : 53 % sur orangers et 46,48 % sur citronniers. Quelle que soit l'année, le deuxième stade larvaire a été le plus affecté. Les sex-ratios ont été de 0,12 (citronniers) et 0,11 (orangers). Trois parasitoïdes locaux ont été identifiés : Cirrospilus pictus, C. vittatus et Pnigalio mediterraneus. En 1996, ils ont donné lieu à des taux de parasitisme maximaux de 22 % à 29 % sur citronniers et 26 % et 30 % sur orangers. Ces taux ont augmenté en 1997 et 1998, du fait de l'introduction de Semielacher petiolatus. Conclusion. Pour renforcer l'activité des auxiliaires locaux, il faudrait tout d'abord procéder à des élevages et des lâchers importants de S. petiolatus, tenter à nouveau d'élever et de lâcher l'espèce A. citricola, enfin d'introduire d'autres parasitoïdes performants.

Introduction. Brazil cherry or grumichama is a little-known, underutilized fruit species of the Myrtaceae family; this tree forms part of CATIE’s field collection of tropical fruits. It is native to southern Brazil and cultivated on a small scale in Brazil, Paraguay, Florida and Hawaii. Materials and methods. Fruit traits were assessed among 12 seedling trees of the same source of origin, and the potential of fresh fruit and derived products was surveyed among employees and students. Results and discussion. Fruit traits (total soluble solids, fruit weight, fruit diameter, flesh weight, seed weight and number of seeds per fruit) differed significantly among the 12 trees. Survey respondents rated derived products such as yellow jam, (red grumichama  +  citrus) jam and (red grumichama  +  mocha) jam higher than fresh fruit, red jam, grumichama wine and juice. Conclusion. Grown in home gardens as an ornamental or as a fruit-bearing tree, or planted as a living fence or windbreak, this fruit crop merits a place in tropical and subtropical settings due to the attractiveness of the tree, its foliage and bloom, its tasty fruit, its contribution to agricultural biodiversity, and the possibility of generating value-added products at the farm, household or community level. For fruit production, vegetative propagation is recommended to retain high quality traits

Introduction. The introduction of the elite variety of black mulberry under saline conditions could have a significant long-term impact on development in the impoverished rural areas. Materials and methods. Plants of the Pakistan mulberry cultivar were propagated by budding on Japanese mulberry seedlings. Trees were cultivated under saline soil conditions in Egypt. Results and discussion. Trees successfully bloomed and produced fruits after 2 years of budding. Intensive flowering and fruiting occurred in the third seasons. Four to six catkins developed on each branch or spur. Each catkin consisted of an average of 315 flowerlets, stacked on a peduncle. Fruits were found to be parthenocarpic. During ripening, fruits changed from the green stage to the ruby-red stage, then to the dark-purple stage. Fruit ripening began in the second week of March and extended to the third week of April. Ripe fruit ranged from (7.3 to 11.8) cm in length and from (1.3 to 1.5) cm in diameter. Fruit weight ranged from (8.3 to 10.2) g. TSS of the fruit juice ranged from (13.0 to 17.5) °Brix, while pH ranged from 3.1 to 3.36. Fruits contained 10.2% carbohydrates, 1.4% protein and 1.2% fibers. Fruits were found to be a good source of iron, potassium, calcium and phosphorus. Fruits contained a medium level of vitamin C. Average crop production per tree in the second and third seasons was (51 and 96) kg, respectively. Ripe fruits could not survive more than 5 days’ storage at room temperature, but survived 3 weeks of cold storage.

Introduction. En Tunisie, la biologie de la forme hivernale du psylle du poirier a été jusqu'à présent très peu étudiée malgré son importance pour le déclenchement du traitement d'hiver nécessaire au développement d'une protection intégrée en vergers de poiriers. Matériel et méthodes. L'étude de la forme hivernale de C. pyri a eu lieu au cours des années 1998, 1999 et 2000 sur des poiriers de la variété locale Radsi. Des collectes d'adultes ont été effectuées par la méthode du frappage hebdomadaire, sur une toile blanche. Puis, la structure de la population imaginale récoltée a été analysée. Des femelles capturées ont été disséquées afin de déterminer leur état physiologique. Résultats. En Tunisie, la forme d'hiver apparaît à la fin du mois d'octobre et la population devient à 100 % du type hivernal en début décembre. Cette forme passe par une phase migratoire en dehors du verger, au cours de laquelle s'accomplit très lentement une partie du développement ovarien. Le retour des psylles au verger en février coïncide en général avec le début de leur maturation sexuelle qui s'achève fin février avec le début des pontes. Conclusion. Dans les conditions tunisiennes, le traitement d'hiver visant les femelles de C. pyri gravides avant le dépôt des pontes doit être effectué à partir de la mi-février.

introduction. Le bananier plantain contribue à la sécurité alimentaire et aux revenus des populations de l’Afrique sub-saharienne. La qualité sanitaire du matériel végétal utilisé en bananeraies est un gage de leur pérennisation. Pour lever cette contrainte, les techniques de multiplication rapide du matériel végétal utilisent des méthodes de multiplication horticole in vivo ou de micropropagation in vitro. La micropropagation par bourgeonnement in vitro, qui permet une production massive de plants de bonne qualité sanitaire, ne fait appel habituellement qu’au bourgeon apical (bap) ou terminal du rejet, alors que celui-ci possède également des bourgeons axillaires (bax) dont nous avons évalué les potentialités. Matériel et méthodes. Nos expérimentations ont porté sur le cultivar Big Ebanga (groupe génomique AAB, sous-groupe des plantains, type faux-corne). Nous avons comparé, au cours de l’acclimatation en ombrière et en champ, les paramètres de croissance et de développement de vitroplants issus des deux types d’explants bax et bap. Des plants issus de rejets ont été utilisés comme témoins. Résultats. Les paramètres mesurés sur les plants issus de bax n’ont pas présenté de différences significatives à la fin de l’acclimatation par rapport aux plants issus des bap, hormis le rapport foliaire. De même, les paramètres de croissance végétative en champ et ceux liés au rendement n’ont pas été significativement différents entre les deux types de plants bax et bap. Les pourcentages de réversion du type « faux corne » vers le type « french » ont été de 0,6 % pour les plants bap et 1,2 % pour plants bax. Discussion et conclusion. Les plants issus de bap et bax se sont comportés de la même manière pendant l’acclimatation en ombrière et en champ. L’utilisation de bax permet d’augmenter les potentialités de production in vitro d’un matériel végétal de qualité. Le taux de réversion des plants bax a été faible. Les bax peuvent donc être utilisés comme explants pour la micropropagation du bananier. Des expérimentations effectuées sur d’autres cultivars appartenant à d’autres groupes génomiques permettront de confirmer ou infirmer ces résultats.

Introduction. Les structures de première mise en marché tentent de planifier les plantations de leurs apporteurs pour faciliter l'adéquation, au moment des récoltes, entre l'offre en produits et les demandes de leurs clients. L'objectif de l'article est d'analyser les dispositifs de planification des plantations sur deux espèces, la salade et la pêche, et de montrer comment ils tiennent compte des contraintes agronomiques propres à chaque espèce et des débouchés des structures de mise en marché. Dispositif d'étude. Des enquêtes ont été réalisées auprès des techniciens de neuf structures de mise en marché du sud-est de la France, ainsi que d'agriculteurs approvisionnant ces structures. Résultats. Dans le cas de la salade, toutes les structures enquêtées influent sur le choix des sous-espèces et des dates de plantation. Cela leur permet de contrôler l'étalement des récoltes et la variabilité des lots de produits, mais avec des degrés variables suivant les structures et leurs débouchés. Dans le cas de la pêche, elles tentent d'influencer les arboriculteurs sur le choix des sous-espèces et des variétés, mais, concrètement, cela se traduit presque essentiellement par une réduction du nombre de variétés cultivées. Discussion et conclusion. L'étude permet de comparer la planification des plantations pour une espèce annuelle et une espèce pérenne : intérêt, degré d'efficacité tant économique qu'agronomique, difficultés rencontrées par les agriculteurs dans leurs exploitations.

Introduction. This protocol aims at detecting and evaluating sensitivity shifts in Pseudocercospora musae (teleomorph: Mycosphaerella musicola) populations towards fungicides that are currently sprayed to control Sigatoka disease of banana. The principle, key advantages, starting plant material, time required and expected results are presented. Materials and methods. Necessary laboratory materials, and details of the seven steps of the protocol achieved during four days of experiments are described. Results. The protocol results in the observation of conidial germination of P. musae (pattern or germ tube elongation) according to the sensitivity to fungicides.

Introduction. Pentaclethra macrophylla, Mimosaceae, is the only species of the genus present in West Africa. The plant's diseases are not well known. The numerous uses of the plant's seeds and pods aroused our interest in investigating its pests and mycoflora, which would constitute a drawback to the plant's production, value and use. Materials and method. Mature pods of P. macrophylla were collected from different locations in Nigeria and tree-top observations were also made for studying the pests present. Isolation, characterization and identification of the mycoflora were done by plating washings from pods, skin and seeds on different media and incubating for 2 to 3 days at 28 °C. Control plating was done with sterile peptone water. Streptomycin was incorporated in the test and control media to avoid bacteria. Some pods and seeds were also stored before being treated as above. A pathogenicity test was also carried out. Results and discussion. Many insect species and pathogens were found to attack the pods and seeds of the plant. The major insect pests identified were Cossus cadaribae, Sitophilus spp., Spodoptera exempta and silkworms. The major fungal pathogens included Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer, Cladosporium herbarum, Penicillium sp., Botryodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium sp. Some of the insect pests skeletonize the green pods, depriving them of photosynthetic surfaces; some bore into the pods, eating up and damaging the seeds' fleshy cotyledons; others lacerate the pods, causing lesions of varying sizes and shapes, thereby creating portals for the penetration of fungal and bacterial pathogens which invade and rot the predisposed seeds. Conclusion. Our study established many pests and mycoflora which attack P. macrophylla pods and seeds. They might have been the cause of the observed symptoms and damage, and the cause of the reduction in the crops planted, reported by previous authors.

Introduction. In Cameroon, plantain plays a major role in food security. An increase in production is necessary to satisfy the demand. Since April 2002, CARBAP has supported a monitory centre of plantain production. The main objective is to prioritise studies of production constraints and characterise commercialisation strategies, in order to improve profitability for small-scale farmers. Materials and methods. Eighteen plots were identified within farms that represent the agro-ecological and socio-economic diversity of the region. Plots were considered as the sampling unit for agronomic and pathogenic constraints analysis. Farms were considered as the sampling unit used in the socio-economic constraint analysis. For each plot, a regular survey of 50 banana plants and agronomic practices was carried out. A survey of each farm was also set for the observation of production conditions thanks to the participation of smallholders. Results. It is possible to distinguish smallholders with different levels of diversification towards plantain production. Agronomic results in the plots surveyed were judged thanks to parameters of growth, yield and pest infestation. Good/bad results on young/older plots were basically distinguished. These divisions of individuals are influenced by initial factors (varieties available for planting, former crops in the plot), means available (inputs) and technical skills in plantain cultivation. Conclusion. This method allows the detection of indicators of diversification towards plantain cultivation and allows one to check the sustainability of such strategies. It is possible to propose improved technical practices. They will be used for further local studies aimed at improving the plantain production.

Introduction. Brazil is a majorproducer of mangoes, but the export volume is still small becauseof the short shelf life of this fruit. The objectives of our workwere to evaluate the effect of modifying the storage atmosphereusing plastic film and temperature, according to different periodsof storage, on the characteristics of Espada mango grown organically. Material and methods. Seven treatments were appliedto the fruits after their harvest: fruits stored at room temperature;at 12 °C / 80–90% relative humidity (RH); washed and stored at roomtemperature; washed and stored at 12 °C / 80–90% RH; washed, packedin PVC and stored at room temperature; washed, packaged in PVC andstored at 12 °C / 80–90% RH; and fruits harvested on the same dayof evaluations, at (5, 9, 13, 16 and 21) days of storage. Resultsand discussion. Storage at 12 °C and 80–90% RH was more efficientin delaying fruit ripening, with minor evolution of peel and pulpcolor and soluble solids contents; this treatment also delayed thedevelopment of anthracnose. Fruits packed in PVC and stored at roomtemperature kept the peel and pulp color for 13 days, compared with9 days for non-packaged fruits. The ideal time to harvest the Espadavariety occurs at 165 days after the onset of flowering, with an indexof “3” for skin color (equal amounts of green and yellow) and pulp color(yellow pulp), and soluble solids of 8.5 °Brix. The low severityof anthracnose found at different evaluation times indicates theprobable tolerance of the Espada variety to the pathogen.

Introduction. The aim of ourresearch was to optimize the number of young mango (Mangiferaindica L. cv. ‘Arumanis’) fruits that could be maintainedper panicle and to improve the criteria for the selection of fruitto be maintained in loco to allow a high yieldto be achieved. Materials and methods. The factors investigatedwere the number of young fruits maintained per panicle (either 2,4 or 6), while the criteria of young fruits to be maintained were:the number of biggest fruit, fruits attached at the base of thepanicle, and fruits distributed evenly from the base to the topof the panicle. Results. Our study shows that maintainingsix young fruits per panicle gave the highest weight of harvestedmango fruits per plant (33 kg) and the lowest weight per fruit (466 g).Maintaining the biggest mango fruit on the panicle resulted in thehighest weight per fruit (496 g). Conclusion. Increasingthe number of young fruits maintained per panicle from 2 to 6 linearlyincreased the weight of fruits per plant, although it decreasedthe weight per fruit linearly.
