Let denote the q-shifted factorial, and set Recently, Gasper [7] showed that some bibasic summation formulas derived by Carlitz [5], Al-Salam and Verma [1], and Wm. Gosper could be extended to the indefinite bibasic summation formula where p and q are independent bases and a, b, c are arbitrary parameters.

In this paper we study a codimension 3 form of the 1:2 resonance. It was first noted by Arnold [3] that the study of bifurcations of symmetric vector fields under a rotation of order q yields information about Hopf bifurcation for a fixed point of a planar diffeomorphism F with eigenvalues . The map Fq can be identified to arbitrarily high order with the flow map of a symmetric vector field having a double-zero eigenvalue ([3], [4], [10], [23]). The resonance of order 2 (also called 1:2 resonance) considered here is the case of a pair of eigenvalues —1 with a Jordan block of order 2. The diffeomorphism then has normal form around the origin given by [4]:

(2) Under what conditions on (an) is Pα (considered as a sequence ordered in a way to be subsequently defined) uniformly distributed modulo 1 for every irrational α?

In [5], Roggenkamp and Scott gave an affirmative answer to the isomorphism problem for integral group rings of finite p-groups G and H, i.e. to the question whether ZG ⥲ ZH implies G ⥲ H (in this case, G is said to be characterized by its integral group ring). Progress on the analogous question with Z replaced by the field Fp of p elements has been very little during the last couple of years; and the most far reaching result in this area in a certain sense - due to Passi and Sehgal, see [8] - may be compared to the integral case, where the group G is of nilpotency class 2.

If λ = (λ1,…, λm) where λ1,…,λm are nonnegative integers with λ1 ≥…≥ λm, then λ is a partition of |λ| = λ1 + …+λm, and we write λ⊢ |λ|. The non-zero λi's are the parts of λ, so λ1 is the largest part, and ℓ(λ) is the number of parts of λ. Two partitions with the same parts, so they differ only in number of zeros, are the same. Throughout this paper, all rings have the identity 1 and ring homomorphisms are assumed to preserve 1. We use p to denote a prime integer and F to denote a field of characteristic p. For an element α in F, we set

Moreover, by D and R, we denote the derivation of A induced by the ordinary derivation of F[ϰ] and the skew polynomial ring A[X,D] where aX = Xa+D(a) (a ∈ A), respectively (cf. [2]).

In [3], R. W. Gilmer determined all the B-automorphisms of B[X] for any commutative ring B. Since then, some extensions or generalizations of his results have been obtained ([1], [2] and [5]). As to the characterization of automorphisms of skew polynomial rings, M. Rimmer [5] established a thorough result in case of automorphism type, while M. Ferrero and K. Kishimoto [2], among others, have made some progress in case of derivation type.

Let B be a Boolean algebra and G a group of automorphisms of B. Define an equivalence relation ∼ on B by letting x ∼ y if there are x1, x2,…,xn, y1, y2, …yn in B such that x is the disjoint union of the xi, y is the disjoint union of the yi, and for each i there is a member of G taking xi to yi. The equivalence classes under ∼ are called equidecomposability types. Addition of equidecomposability types is given by (x) + (y) = (x V y) provided x ∧ y = 0. An example is given of a complete Boolean algebra B and a group G of automorphisms of B with X, Y ∊ B such that (X) + (X) = (Y) + (Y) but (X) ≠ (Y), answering a question of Wagon (see [5 p. 231 problem 14]). Moreover B may be taken to be the algebra of Borel subsets of Cantor space modulo sets of the first category. It is also remarked that in this case equidecomposability types do not form a weak cardinal algebra.

Totality of a category as introduced by Street and Walters [17] is known to be a strong cocompleteness property (cf. also [21]) which goes far beyond ordinary (small) cocompleteness. It implies compactness in the sense of Isbell [11] and therefore hypercompleteness [7], that is: the existence of limits of all those (not necessarily small) diagrams which are not prevented from having a limit merely from size-considerations with respect to the homsets. In particular, arbitrary intersections of monomorphisms exist in a total category; which is part of Street's [16] characterization of totality and is used in establishing the interrelationship with topoi (cf. also [15]).

A recent survey article by J. Fournier and J. Stewart (Bull.AMS 13 (1985), 1-21) explains how amalgams of Lp with lq (as function spaces over any locally compact abelian group G) can be used as an effective tool for the treatment of various problems in harmonic analysis. The present article may be seen as a complement to this survey, indicating further advantages that arise if one works with generalized amalgams (introduced in 1980 under the name of Wiener-type spaces by the author [10]). The main difference between amalgams and these more general spaces is the fact that they allow a more precise description of the local behavior of functions (or distributions) by rather arbitrary norms and that the conditions on the global behavior (of the quantity obtained using that chosen local norm) is described in a way that includes both growth and integrability conditions (not only lq-summability).

This paper is concerned with a combinatorial construction which mysteriously “mimics” or “models” the decomposition of certain reducible representations of orthogonal groups. Although no knowledge of representation theory is needed to understand the body of this paper, a little familiarity is necessary to understand the representation theoretic motivation given in the introduction. Details of the proofs will most easily be understood by people who have had some exposure to Schensted's algorithm or jeu de tacquin.

Let X be a compact Hausdorff space, let C(X) be the algebra of complex-valued continuous functions on X, and let A be a uniform algebra on X. Fix a nonzero complex homomorphism τ on A and a representing measure m for τ on X. The abstract Hardy space Hp = Hp(m), 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, determined by A is defined to the closure of Lp = Lp(m) when p is finite and to be the weak*-closure of A in L∞ = L∞(m) p = ∞.

This paper is a continuation of [3] which initiated a systematic study of sufficient conditions for the weighted interpolation inequality of sum form, 1.1 to hold. Here ϕ, θ are non-negative functions of m, j, p, q, r, Ω is a bounded or unbounded domain in Rn, ∊ belongs to an interval Γ=(0, ∊0), u is in a certain Banach space E(Ω), and N, W, P are measurable real functions satisfying N≧ 0, W, P > 0, as well as additional conditions stated below. Finally the constant K does not depend on u although it may depend on the other parameters.

The most usual diameters in the world are those of a sphere and they all contain its centre. More generally, a chord of a convex body in Rd is called a diameter if there are two parallel supporting hyperplanes at the two endpoints of the chord.

It is easily seen that there are points on at least two diameters. From a result of Kosiński [6] proved in a more general setting it follows that every convex body has a point lying on at least three diameters. Does a typical convex body behave like a sphere and contain a point on infinitely or even uncountably many diameters?

But what is a typical convex body? The space 𝒦 of all convex bodies (d-dimensional compact convex sets) in Rd, equipped with the Hausdorff metric, is a Baire space.

The main result of this paper establishes the existence and uniqueness of integral representations of KMS functionals on nuclear *- algebras. Our first result is about representations of *-algebras by means of operators having a common dense domain in a Hilbert space. We show, under certain regularity conditions, that (Powers) self-adjoint representations of a nuclear *-algebra, which admit a direct integral decomposition, disintegrate into representations which are almost all self-adjoint. We then define and study the class of self-derivative algebras. All algebras with an identity are in this class and many other examples are given. We show that if is a self-derivative algebra with an equicontinuous approximate identity, the cone of all positive forms on is isomorphic to the cone of all positive invariant kernels on These in turn correspond bijectively to the invariant Hilbert subspaces of the dual space This shows that if is a nuclear -space, the positive cone of has bounded order intervals, which implies that each positive form on has an integral representation in terms of the extreme generators of the cone. Given a continuous exponentially bounded one-parameter group of *-automorphisms of we can define the subcone of all invariant positive forms satisfying the KMS condition. Central functionals can be viewed as KMS functionals with respect to a trivial group action. Assuming that is a self-derivative algebra with an equicontinuous approximate identity, we show that the face generated by a self-adjoint KMS functional is a lattice. If is moreover a nuclear *-algebra the previous results together imply that each self-adjoint KMS functional has a unique integral representation by means of extreme KMS functionals almost all of which are self-adjoint.

Let k be any field, A a central simple k-algebra of degree m (i.e., dimk A = m2). Several methods of constructing the generic splitting fields for A are proposed and Saltman proves that these methods result in almost the same generic splitting field [8, Theorems 4.2 and 4.4]. In fact, the generic splitting field constructed by Roquette [7] is the function field of the Brauer- Severi variety Vm(A) while the generic splitting field constructed by Heuser and Saltman [4 and 8] is the function field of the norm surface W(A). In this paper, to avoid possible confusion about the dimension, we shall call it the norm hypersurface instead of the norm surface.

R also induces the sectional curvature function K on 2-planes in is an orthonormal basis of the 2-plane π.

The Ramanujan-Bailey identity that establishes a symmetric relation between two hypergeometric series 3F2 is extended to a symmetric relation between two hypergeometric series 4F3. We also give a symmetric model that makes this symmetry evident.

We are concerned here with the problem of describing the direct integral decomposition of a unitary representation obtained by restriction from a larger group. This is the dual problem to the more commonly investigated problem of decomposing induced representations. In this paper we work in the context of completely solvable Lie groups—more general than nilpotent, but less general than exponential solvable. Moreover, the groups involved are simply connected. The restriction problem was considered originally in [2] and in [6] for nilpotent groups.

This article fully characterizes categorically universal varieties of (0, 1)-lattices (that is, lattices with a least element 0 and a greatest element 1 regarded as nullary operations), thereby concluding a series of partial results [3, 5, 8, 10, also 14] which originated with the proof of categorical universality for the variety of all (0, 1)-lattices by Grätzer and Sichler [6].

A category C of algebras of a given type is universal if every category of algebras (and equivalently, according to Hedrlín and Pultr [7 or 14], also the category of all graphs) is isomorphic to a full subcategory of C. The universality of C is thus equivalent to the existence of a full embedding Φ : G→C of the category G of all graphs and their compatible mappings into C. When Φ assigns a finite algebra to every finite graph, we say that C is finite-to-finite universal.
