The larvae of 11 species of the genus Stenoporpia (Geometridae: Lepidoptera) from Arizona are described, figured, and keyed. On the basis of the known larvae, Stenoporpia can be divided into four very distinct species-groups, one feeding on species of oak, and the other three on conifers. Temporal displacement was found in four species of Stenoporpia feeding on ponderosa pine at the Fort Valley Experimental Forest near Flagstaff, Ariz. The sensory papillae of the maxillary palpi are investigated as a taxonomic character. A list of all of the known foodplants of the species of the genus is given.

Shirtly after the appearance of my earlier paper (Munroe, 1951) on Chauliodes disjunctus, Prof. G. J. Spencer, of the University of British Columbia, wrote to me that he had two kinds of chauliodine males, one agreeing with what I described as the male of disjunctus, and another which he considered to be the true male of that species.

The alfalfa leafcutter bee, Megachile rotundata (F.), is the primary pollinator of commercially grown seed alfalfa in Canada. Chalkbrood is a fungal disease, caused by a complex of Ascosphaerales species (Skou and King 1984) that infect the larvae of many species of bees. One species, Ascosphaera aggregata Skou (Skou 1975), is a severe problem in leafcutter bees in the United States and in some cases has caused losses of more than 65% (Stephen et al. 1981). Mode of dispersal, infestation of bee larvae, sporulation, and associated symptomatology of this pathogen have been described (Vandenberg et al. 1980; Vandenberg and Stephen 1982; McManus and Youssef 1984).

Seven species of Nabicula Kirby occur in Canada: N. americolimbata (Carayon), N. flavomarginata (Scholtz), N. limbata (Dahlbom), N. nigrovittata nearctica (Kerzhner), N. propinqua (Reuter), N. subcoleoptrata Kirby, and N. vanduzeei (Kirkaldy), of which N. limbata is officially recorded for the first time for North America. A faunistic review of the species, key to all taxa, generic diagnosis, and characters distinguishing male and female last-instar nymphs are presented. As appropriate for each species, die following are provided: synonymy, description of adult, wing polymorphism, taxonomic comments, detailed geographical distribution, bioecology, and illustration of important structural characters and nymphal instars. The last-instar nymphs of N. americolimbata, N. nigrovittata nearctica, N. propinqua, N. subcoleoptrata, and N. vanduzeei are described and illustrated for the first time. The biogeography of Nabicula is considered with regard to species diversity patterns, ecological assemblages, species distribution patterns, and relationships between macroptery and geographical distribution.

The female-produced sex pheromone blend of the pandora moth, Coloradia pandora pandora Blake, a pest responsible for periodic defoliation of pine forests in the western United States, has been identified. The pheromone consisted of a mixture of E10,Z12-hexadecadienal, E10,Z12-hexadecadienyl acetate, and E10,E12-hexadecadienyl acetate. All three components were essential for optimal attraction. E10,Z12-Hexadecadienol, tentatively identified in trace amounts in pheromone gland extracts, elicited strong responses from male antennae in coupled gas chromatography – electroantennogram analyses but had no apparent effect as a pheromone component at physiologically relevant levels. Hexadecanal, octadecanal, and hexadecyl acetate also were identified in extracts of female pheromone glands but elicited no responses from male antennae, nor did they appear to be components of the attractant blend. In field trials, each trap baited with the optimized three-component blend of E10,Z12-hexadecadienal, E10,Z12-hexadecadienyl acetate, and E10,E12-hexadecadienyl acetate captured an average of more than 40 male moths per night.

We reported previously (Steck et al. 1977) that equal-parts mixtures of (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald) and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac) attract male Crymodes devastator (Brace) moths to field traps, and that attraction is enhanced by incorporation of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac) in the lure. During subsequent studies with sex lures for this species we discovered that (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Zll-16:OH) is much more effective than Z7-12:Ac as a trapping synergist.

During 1978 many structural analogs of the sex attractant components were tested as lure synergists by adding 20% of each analog to a basic 2:l Z11-16:Ald + Z11-16:Ac lure, using numbers of males trapped as the criterion of effect. Z5- and Z7-10:Ac; Z5-, Z7-, and Z9-12:Ac; Z5-, Z7-, Z9-, and Z11-14:Ac; Z5-, Z7-, and Z9-16:Ac were tested in this way, as were the corresponding alcohols and aldehydes and Zll-16:OH. The (E) isomers of these along with Ell-16:Ald and E11-16:Ac were finally tested.

A sequential sampling system for early-instar Douglas-fir tussock moth larvae based on beating 3 lower branches from each of a number of trees is described. The relationship between lower- and mid-crown insect densities is given. The number of samples required to assess moderate insect densities using a fixed level of precision and at low insect densities using a critical density level is presented. The system is designed to be used during the early stages of an outbreak in stands not previously defoliated.

Following the lead set by Dr. George M. Stirrett, (Canadian Entomologist, July, 1952), the following records of Mallophaga from avian hosts taken in the province of Quebec have been assembled. It is hoped that others will record collections made in their respective provinces, so that eventually records and the distribution of species may be available for the Dominion.

The following species were largely collected by the author, with some assistance from the late Dr. W. E, Swales. The specimens form part of the Macdonald College Collection.

This paper completes a review and revision of the tribe Anemadini in North America, covering the subtribe Eocatopina (new for North America), with the genus Neoeocatopsgen. nov. containing one species, and the subtribe Nemadina, with the genus Nemadus Thomson containing 12 species. Species are forest inhabitants feeding on carrion and other decaying materials, may occur in caves, or are myrmecophiles occupying the nests of formicine ants, mostly of the genera Formica L. and Camponotus Mayr. The following new synonyms are recognized: N. ellipticus Jeannel, 1936 = N. horni Hatch, 1933 and N. obliquus Fall, 1937 = N. triangulum Jeannel, 1936. Lectotypes are designated for Catops brachyderus LeConte, 1863, Catopspusio LeConte, 1859, and Choleva decipiens Horn, 1880. New species are Nemadus browni Peck and Cook, sp. nov., N. criddlei Peck and Cook, sp. nov., and N. falli Peck and Cook, sp. nov.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with the life-histories of a number of insects attacking the black sage, Cordia macrostachya, in the West Indies, where search is being made for suitable species to use in an attempt at the biological control of the weed in Mauritius (Simmonds 1949).

Schematiza, like Physonota alutacea, is a leaf-eating beetle, sometimes occurring in relatively large numbers on Cordia. It is very heavily parasitized in Trinidad, and as it appeared to be very suitable for introduction into Mauritius it was investigated in detail, both in the field and in the laboratory.

Ctenolepisma (C.) electrans sp.n., from the Dominican amber, is described and compared with the closest living species. The new taxon is the only Lepismatidae known so far in the Dominican Republic amber and corresponds to the only known fossil Ctenolepisma.

The influence of diet on oviposition and survival of Forficula senegalensis Serville was studied in laboratory conditions using four different regimens: millet leaves and stems, lepidopteran eggs and larvae, millet pollen, and no food at all. Four parameters were monitored: female weight, survival time, time to oviposition, and number of eggs produced. Starving females and females fed millet leaves and stems lost weight and survived for an average of 30–40 days without any of them laying eggs. Females fed millet pollen or lepidopteran eggs and larvae gained weight and survived for more than 60 days. Forty percent of the females fed pollen laid an average of 49 eggs the first time, and 50% of those fed lepidopteran eggs and larvae produced an average of 67.5 eggs. In both cases, less than 2% of the females oviposited a second time (average of 30 eggs). Earwigs fed lepidopteran eggs and larvae oviposited sooner. A diet of millet leaves is insufficient for oviposition in F. senegalensis; females need a richer diet based on pollen or animal preys in order to lay eggs.

Two forms of Hybomitra typhus (Whitney) flying together have been collected from Ontario bogs. The two forms have been clearly segregated by size and colour characters and also by differences in the appearance of esterase isozymes shown by electrophoresis. The combined data indicate that insects recorded as H. typhus comprise more than one species.

Translucent fluorescent yellow flight traps were significantly more attractive to citrus blackfly, Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, than opaque yellow and clear traps. Significant correlations were obtained between trap catches of adult A. woglumi and foliar densities of adults and sedentary immature stages. The biological interpretation of such correlations and potential use of flight traps to monitor population trends of A. woglumi are discussed.

This report constitutes the first mention of Chlamisus cribripennis (Lec.) in Nova Scotia and its first mention as an economically important pest of blueberries in Canada. Also included are observations on the life history, parasitism, and laboratory rearing of this species.

Adult emergence curves of the Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock), and 27 members of its parasitoid complex were compared for four generations in the Georgia piedmont. Based on numbers of emerging adults, parasitism of the three 1975 R. frustrana generations was 42%. Two parasitoids, Lixophaga mediocris Aldrich and Compoplex frustranae Cushman, comprised 45 and 23% of all parasitoids, respectively.

Emergence curves of R. frustrana and parasitoids showed considerable overlap. It appears unlikely that foliar applications of broad spectrum insecticides for control of R. frustrana can be timed to prevent heavy parasitoid mortality.

Eleven species of parasitoids were reared directly from host larvae or pupae. Examination of host remains showed that some species of parasitoids may be either primary or secondary. The habits of Haltichella rhyacionae Gahan and Spilochalcis flavopicta Cresson were found to be more diverse than previously reported and include internal secondary and primary parasitism, respectively.

A very simple model of normalized growth rates of temperate pasture legumes and grasses in response to temperature and moisture developed by Fitzpatrick and Nix for Australia was modified and used to examine the favorability of weather for the build-up of eight species of aphids in southeastern Australia. The work takes a physiological approach to describing the condition favorable for aphid population development.

The Nearctic species of the genus Trichacis are revised. Nine out of 15 species recognized are new to science: T. alticola (New Mexico, Colorado), T. bison (Ontario, Florida, Louisiana, Illinois, Texas), T. celticola (Mississippi, Ontario, Louisiana, Texas), T. dracula (Illinois), T. elongata (Missouri), T. huberi (California), T. mandibulata (Illinois), T. pyramidalis (Ontario), and T. striata (Florida). Six previously described Nearctic species are redescribed, viz. T. arizonensis (Ashmead), T. cornicola (Ashmead), T. cornuta Fouts, T. rufipes Ashmead, T. texana Fouts, and T. virginiensis Ashmead. The males of T. arizonensis, T. texana, and T. virginiensis are described for the first time. A generic diagnosis of Trichacis and keys to Nearctic species are given. The higher classification, bionomics, world distribution, and character states of Trichacis species are discussed.

Although the species of Ophiogomphus are well defined in the adult stage their nymphs are extremely uniform in structure and are difficult to separate. This is perhaps not remarkable in view of the similarity of their habitats, all the species being shallow burrowers in running streams, usually clear, with a sandy or pebbly bottom, where they occupy the edges of currents, gentle riffles, or pools at the foot of rapids.
