The taxonomy and biology of New World species of Chrysolampinae are reviewed with diagnoses given for the subfamily, genera, and species. A key to the species of Chrysolampus and a summary of geographic distribution and information on host and floral associations are presented. Three new species are described from North America (Chrysolampus improcerus, C. luridus and C. elegans); Chrysolampus lycti Crawford is transferred to Perilampus and synonymized with the European species P. micans Dalman. The genus Chrysomalla is recorded in the New World for the first time based on the new species Chrysomalla hesperis. An explanation of the historical biogeography of the genera is proposed that is consistent with Late Cretaceous and Tertiary geological, botanical, and climatic information. It is suggested that the extant species are descendents of elements of a widely distributed arid biota.

Experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions to determine the influence of the relative sizes of predator and prey, temperature, presence of refugia, size of the search area, and host-plant species on the predation performance of Podisus maculiventris (Say) nymphs against viburnum leaf beetle, Pyrrhalta viburni (Paykull), a new landscape pest in North America that feeds on the foliage of species of Viburnum L. (Caprifoliaceae). Predator handling time was positively correlated with body mass of the prey for all instars of P. maculiventris, but the rate of increase of handling time relative to prey mass decreased as predator age increased. Temperature was positively correlated with predation rates, but the presence of refugia did not have an impact on predation. The influence of host-plant species and size of the search area was tested on southern arrowwood (Viburnum dentatum L.) and American cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus L. var. americanum Aiton). There was a significant interaction between plant species and size of the search area, the species effect becoming significant as leaf surface area increased. In the case of southern arrowwood a negative correlation between size of the search area and predation rate was also detected. The identification of these factors adds valuable knowledge for using P. maculiventris as a biological-control agent against P. viburni.

A theory for the population behavior of the eastern blackheaded budworm is presented. The qualitative properties and key processes of the system are identified and a description of the theory as a simulation model is given. Two domains of stability exist for the insect; one is caused by bird predation, the second by the effects of food limitation. The model predicts that the budworm’s cyclical population fluctuations are produced by the disappearance and reappearance of these stable domains and consequent movement of densities to new levels. Parasitism is identified as the principal mechanism causing this behavior. A qualitative comparison of model behavior with historical behavior is made and a critical field experiment to test the validity of the theory is proposed. Finally it is suggested that the population behavior of many forest defoliators may be explained using this theory.

It is now twenty years since the lamented Jules Lichtenstein published the first—and, unfortunately, last—part of his proposed monograph of the Aphidæ (a). This instalment contained a list, without references, of the genera and species known to Lichtenstein, but, as will be seen from the following pages, a large number of names was omitted and some were misapplied, so that a new list of genera should be useful, having reard to the interest and importance of the family.

Several authors (Charmillot and Baggiolini 1975; Proverbs et al. 1975; Roelofs et al. 1976; MacLellan 1976) have stated that mass-trapping male codling moths with sex pheromones did not provide economic control of this pest. MacLellan (1976), however, reported suppression of codling moth populations in unsprayed orchards 2-3 ha in size and Madsen et al. (1976) obtained similar results in orchards in which sprays were not applied specifically for codling moth control. In 1975 and 1976 similar studies were undertaken in three 0.5–0.75 ha plots (A, B, C) of mature apple trees at Vineland (Hagley 1970). Plots A and B had not received insecticide sprays from 1969 to 1974 and had relatively high codling moth infestation levels (Table I). Plot C had been on a pest management program since 1971.

The relationship between the fate of cocoons of the larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii (Htg.), and distance from small-mammal tunnels was studied during 1958 in the Whiteshell Forest Reserve of eastern Manitoba. The objects were to determine the distance that small mammals can detect cocoons and to observe possible effects of the interactions of small-mammal predation and other natural mortality factors of the insect. Additional analyses of the data provided information on the behaviour of the predators and the ecology of the prey insect.

The behavior of adults of clerid beetle Thanasimus dubius (F.) preying upon adult southern pine beetles, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman, in an arena in the laboratory is described by classifying the acts according to their consequences. A sequence of five stereotyped acts is performed by the predator: either searching or ambush, seizure of prey, alignment of prey, consumption of prey, and grooming. Handling time by the predator consists of the sums of the durations of the four acts of seizure through grooming, which was not significantly different for male and female predators, but was significantly longer for male prey (13.81 min) than for female prey (10.49 min). Consumption of prey (8–9 min) is the major component of handling time. Predators searched or waited in ambush an average of 5.8 mm before seizing a prey, and captured prey with an efficiency of 72%. Blinding predators had no significant effect on their efficiency at capturing prey. Maxillary and labial palpectomy alone or in combination significantly reduced efficiency of capture, and reduced numbers of prey consumed.

In 1947 and 1948 brown foliage on arborvitae trees caused by leaf miners became increasingly noticeable in New Brunswick. Since the literature contained little information on the miners this study was undertaken in 1950 to obtain information on their biology, control, and effect on the host tree. Part of the study dealing with the separation of the four species of leaf miners, Argyresthia thuiella (Pack.), A. freyella Wlshm., A. aureoargentella Brower, and Recurvaria thujaella Kft., is being published as a separate paper (7). This paper is concerned with the life-history and associated studies.

The phylogenetic position of the family Cupedidae (Cupesidae or Cupidae of some authors) has been the subject of much controversy. As studies have been made for the most part on the eastern genus Cupes, I was pleased to have an opportunity to study the western species Priacma serrata (Lec.) (Atkins, 1957). Several hundred males were collected near Lumky, B.C. during springin 1956 and 1957. Many of these were dissected in order to study those features of the internal and external morphology on which much of the following discussion is based.

Arctic ecosystems are characterised by a mosaic of distinct microhabitats, which play a key role in structuring biodiversity. Understanding species diversity in relation to these microhabitats, and how communities are structured seasonally, is imperative to properly conserve, monitor, and manage northern biodiversity. Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) are dominant arthropod predators in the Arctic, yet the seasonal change in their communities in relation to microhabitat variation is relatively unknown. This research quantified how spider assemblages are structured seasonally and by microhabitat, near Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada. In 2014, spiders were collected in 240 pan and pitfall traps placed in common microhabitat types (two wet and two dry) from 3 July to 11 August, the active season in the high Arctic. In total, 10 353 spiders from 22 species and four families were collected. Non-metric multidimensional scaling ordinations revealed that spider assemblages from wet habitats were distinct from those occurring in drier habitats, but that differences within each of those habitats were not evident. Abundance and diversity was highest in wet habitats and differed significantly from dry habitats; both these variables decreased seasonally. Spider assemblages in the north are structured strongly along moisture gradients, and such data informs planning for future ecological monitoring in the Arctic.

Two soil sampling techniques were used over a 2 year period to examine the distribution of carabid beetles in a pest management apple orchard in southern Ontario. Soil coring was the most suitable technique for investigating temporal and vertical distribution patterns. Horizontal distribution of individual carabid species was best examined by sampling the rhizosphere of the cover crop only. Comparison of the soil sampling results with those obtained from pitfall traps showed that in late summer carabid larvae are subterranean in habit, as are adults of Bradycellus rupestris Say and Amara spp. Carabid density was highest (289.1 m−2) in late summer and fall, and lowest in late winter. In most samples carabid density was greatest in the rhizosphere of the cover crop and decreased rapidly with increasing depth: few beetles were found at depths greater than 30 cm. In August, densities of the commonest adult carabids were greatest close to trees in the orchard and decreased with increasing distance from trees. The distribution of carabid larvae was not related to distance from the tree, but densities of larvae were higher to the south of trees, and lower to the north.

Descriptions are presented for 74 new Lonchaeidae as follows: Dasiops Rondani, 60 species: 37 from North America, 12 from South America, 8 from Africa, and 3 from Australia; Lamprolonchaea Bezzi, 14 species: 3 from Caroline Islds., 3 from Mariana Islds., 2 from New Hebrides Islds., 2 from Samoa, and one from each of the following: China, Fiji, India, Marshall Islds., and West Australia.

Larvae, and male and female adults, of Acalyptonotus neoviolaceus n. sp., and male and female adults of A. pacificus n. sp., are described from western North America. A revised diagnosis of Acalyptonotus is proposed based upon larvae and adults, and the phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic status of Acalyptonotidae are discussed.

Nineteen species of carabid beetles are added to the list of those found in agricultural lands near Belleville in 1959–62, and eight previously determined to genus only are herein identified to species. Notiophilus intermedins Lth. is reported from Ontario for the first time, and a second record is made of Bembidion obtusum Ser., a European species doubtfully established in North America.

All codling moth larvae, Laspeyresia pomonella (L.), in 100,000 infested apples were killed by fumigation with 32 g/m3 methyl bromide for 2 h at about 17 °C followed by 31–35 days of storage at −0.5 °C. The apples were harvested into bins, fumigated, and placed in a standard cold storage room of a grower’s packinghouse as would be done under commercial conditions. Standard cold storage killed all first and second, and some third, instar larvae in nonfumigated fruit. Cursory sampling indicated that fumigation alone, without subsequent cold storage, could kill all stages. The fumigation and storage treatment did not injure Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Spartan, Jonathan, or Newtown apples.

The lodgepole needle miner, Recurvaria milleri Busck, was discovered in 1903 in the Yosemite National Park, California, and was described as a new species by Busck (1914). The infestation has persisted in that area, with irregular periods of abundance and scarcity. The latest heavy infestation was reported (G. R. Struble, in litt.) to have started in 1947, and has continued to intensify. The history of the outbreak to 1919 was reported by Patterson (1921).

In 1942 a second important infestation was reported in the Banff National Park, Alberta. Details concerning the area of infestation and life-history notes were given by Hopping (1946). This infestation has continued to spread and has reached Yoho, Kootenay, and Revelstoke National parks.

A new genus of Otopheidomeninae is described, keyed, and based on a new species, Nabiseius duplicisetus. Larvae, nymphs, and females of this mite were found on the abdominal dorsum of a nabid bug, where presumably they are ectoparasitic, as with related species.

In the 69th Annual Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario (1938), pages 56 and 57, the writer compares the Rhagoletis reared from dogwood (Cornus Amomum Mill.) with the morphologically similar apple maggot from apple and hawthorn.

LC50 and LT50 values for two multicapsid nuclear polyhedrosis viruses isolated from the alfalfa looper, Autographa californica (Speyer), and a mint looper, Rachiplusia ou (Guenée), were determined against black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), neonate larvae, 1-day-old larvae reared at 15 °C before testing, and 1-day-old larvae reared at 27 °C before testing. The results showed that black cutworm larvae have low to moderate susceptibility to these viruses. As the larvae developed, their susceptibility to the viruses rapidly declined. Initial growth of larvae surviving sublethal dosages of these viruses was reduced, but pupal weights of these larvae were not significantly different from untreated controls.
