In [5] Doeblin considered some classes of finite non-homogeneous Markov chains and gave without proofs several results concerning their asymptotic behaviour. In the present paper we first attempt to make Doeblin's results precise and try to reconstruct his arguments. Subsequently we investigate more general situations, where a state space decomposition is provided by the sets occurring in the representation of the atomic sets of the tail σ-field. We show that Doeblin's notion of an associated chain, as well as considerations regarding the tail σ-field structure of the chain, can be used to solve such cases.

By using an adaptation of the radial generation method, we give an integral formula for the proportion of triangles in a Poisson-Voronoi tessellation, which gives a value of 0.0112354 to 7 decimal places. We also obtain the first four moments of some characteristics of triangles.

We consider a stationary germ-grain model Ξ with convex and compact grains and the distance r(x) from x ε ℝd to Ξ. For almost all points x ε ℝd there exists a unique point p(x) in the boundary of Ξ such that r(x) is the length of the vector x-p(x), which is called the spherical contact vector at x. In this paper we relate the distribution of the spherical contact vector to the times it takes a typical boundary point of Ξ to hit another grain if all grains start growing at the same time and at the same speed. The notion of a typical point is made precise by using the generalized curvature measures of Ξ. The result generalizes a well known formula for the Boolean model. Specific examples are discussed in detail.

In this paper, we introduce a family of processes with values on the nonnegative integers that describes the dynamics of populations where individuals are allowed to have different types of interactions. The types of interactions that we consider include pairwise interactions, such as competition, annihilation, and cooperation; and interactions among several individuals that can be viewed as catastrophes. We call such families of processes branching processes with interactions. Our aim is to study their long-term behaviour under a specific regime of the pairwise interaction parameters that we introduce as the subcritical cooperative regime. Under such a regime, we prove that a process in this class comes down from infinity and has a moment dual which turns out to be a jump-diffusion that can be thought as the evolution of the frequency of a trait or phenotype, and whose parameters have a classical interpretation in terms of population genetics. The moment dual is an important tool for characterizing the stationary distribution of branching processes with interactions whenever such a distribution exists; it is also an interesting object in its own right.

The problem of finding the probability distribution of the first hitting time of a double integral process (DIP) such as the integrated Wiener process (IWP) has been an important and difficult endeavor in stochastic calculus. It has applications in many fields of physics (first exit time of a particle in a noisy force field) or in biology and neuroscience (spike time distribution of an integrate-and-fire neuron with exponentially decaying synaptic current). The only results available are an approximation of the stationary mean crossing time and the distribution of the first hitting time of the IWP to a constant boundary. We generalize these results and find an analytical formula for the first hitting time of the IWP to a continuous piecewise-cubic boundary. We use this formula to approximate the law of the first hitting time of a general DIP to a smooth curved boundary, and we provide an estimation of the convergence of this method. The accuracy of the approximation is computed in the general case for the IWP and the effective calculation of the crossing probability can be carried out through a Monte Carlo method.

Preferential attachment is a widely adopted paradigm for understanding the dynamics of social networks. Formal statistical inference, for instance GLM techniques, and model-verification methods will require knowing test statistics are asymptotically normal even though node- or count-based network data are nothing like classical data from independently replicated experiments. We therefore study asymptotic normality of degree counts for a sequence of growing simple undirected preferential attachment graphs. The methods of proof rely on identifying martingales and then exploiting the martingale central limit theorems.

We observe the frog model, an infinite system of interacting random walks, on ℤ with an asymmetric underlying random walk. For certain initial frog distributions we construct an explicit formula for the moments of the leftmost visited site, as well as their asymptotic scaling limits as the drift of the underlying random walk vanishes. We also provide conditions in which the lower bound can be scaled to converge in probability to the degenerate distribution at 1 as the drift vanishes.

Empirical Paretian distributions play an important role in urban demography, size distributions of firms and income distributions; hence the addition of Paretian random variables is of interest. First, we give the asymptotic behavior (for large values of the variable) of the density function of a sum of n independently distributed Paretian variables. We then obtain the limiting distribution of an infinite sum of (i.i.d) Paretian variables and link our results with the theory of stable distributions.

Useful approximations have been developed along the years to predict the precision of systematic sampling for measurable functions of a bounded support in ℝd. Recently, the theory of systematic sampling on ℝ has received a thrust. In geometric sampling, design based unbiased estimators exist, however, which imply systematic sampling on the circle (𝕊1) and the semicircle (ℍ1); the planimeter estimator of an area, or the Buffon-Steinhaus estimator of curve length in the plane constitute popular examples. Over the last two decades, many other estimators of geometric measures have been obtained which imply systematic sampling also on the sphere (𝕊2). In this paper we adapt the theory available for non-periodic functions of bounded support on ℝ to periodic functions, and thereby to 𝕊1 and ℍ1, and we obtain new estimators of the corresponding variance approximations. Further we consider - we believe for the first time - the problem of predicting the precision of systematic sampling in 𝕊2. The paper starts with a historical perspective, and ends with suggestions for further research.

We consider the uniqueness and extinction properties of the interacting branching collision process (IBCP), which consists of two strongly interacting components: an ordinary Markov branching process and a collision branching process. We establish that there is a unique IBCP, and derive necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be nonexplosive that are easily checked. Explicit expressions are obtained for the extinction probabilities for both regular and irregular cases. The associated expected hitting times are also considered. Examples are provided to illustrate our results.

For the Ek/G/1 queue with finite waiting room the phase technique is used to analyse the Markov chain imbedded in the queueing process at successive instants at which customers complete service, and the distribution of queue length is obtained. The limit as the size of the waiting room becomes infinite is found.

This paper is concerned with a model for the spread of an epidemic in a closed, homogeneously mixing population in which new infections occur at rate f(x, y) and removals occur at rate g(x, y), where x and y are the numbers of susceptible and infective individuals, respectively, and f and g are arbitrary but specified positive real-valued functions. Sequences of such epidemics, indexed by the initial number of susceptibles n, are considered and conditions are derived under which the epidemic processes converge almost surely to a birth and death process as n tends to infinity. Thus a threshold theorem for such an epidemic model is obtained. The results are extended to models which incorporate immigration and emigration of susceptibles. The theory is illustrated by several examples of models taken from the epidemic literature. Generalizations to multipopulation epidemics are discussed briefly.

We present two forms of weak majorization, namely, very weak majorization and p-weak majorization that can be used as sample path criteria in the analysis of queueing systems. We demonstrate how these two criteria can be used in making comparisons among the joint queue lengths of queueing systems with blocking and/or multiple classes, by capturing an interesting interaction between state and performance descriptors. As a result, stochastic orderings on performance measures such as the cumulative number of losses can be derived. We describe applications that involve the determination of optimal policies in the context of load-balancing and scheduling.

In 1990, Ramaswami proved that, given a Markov renewal process of M/G/1 type, it is possible to construct a Markov renewal process of GI/M/1 type such that the matrix transforms G(z, s) for the M/G/1-type process and R(z, s) for the GI/M/1-type process satisfy a duality relationship. In his 1996 PhD thesis, Bright used time reversal arguments to show that it is possible to define a different dual for positive-recurrent and transient processes of M/G/1 type and GI/M/1 type. Here we compare the properties of the Ramaswami and Bright dual processes and show that the Bright dual has desirable properties that can be exploited in the design of algorithms for the analysis of Markov chains of GI/M/1 type and M/G/1 type.

The typical cell of a stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation in the d-dimensional Euclidean space is called the Poisson polytope, and the cell containing the origin is called the Poisson 0-polytope. The intention of the paper is to show that the cells of the anisotropic tessellations are in some sense larger than those of the isotropic tessellations. Under the condition of equal intensities, it is proved that the moments of order n = 1, 2, … for the volume of the Poisson 0-polytope in the anisotropic case are not smaller than the corresponding moments in the isotropic case. Similar results are derived for the Poisson polytope. Finally, generalizations are mentioned.

Let Yk(ω) (k ≥ 0) be the number of vertices of a Galton-Watson tree ω that have k children, so that Z(ω) := ∑k≥0Yk(ω) is the total progeny of ω. In this paper, we will prove various statistical properties of Z and Yk. We first show, under a mild condition, an asymptotic expansion of P(Z = n) as n → ∞, improving the theorem of Otter (1949). Next, we show that Yk(ω) := ∑j=0kYj(ω) is the total progeny of a new Galton-Watson tree that is hidden in the original tree ω. We then proceed to study the joint probability distribution of Z and Ykk, and show that, as n → ∞, Yk/nk is asymptotically Gaussian under the conditional distribution P(· | Z = n).

Limit theorems of Berman involve the total time spent by Brownian motion with negative drift above a fixed or exponentially distributed negative level. We give explicitly the probability densities and distribution functions, obtained via an equivalence of laws.

Optimization problems in cancer radiation therapy are considered, with the efficiency functional defined as the difference between expected survival probabilities for normal and neoplastic tissues. Precise upper bounds of the efficiency functional over natural classes of cellular response functions are found. The ‘Lipschitz' upper bound gives rise to a new family of probability metrics. In the framework of the ‘m hit-one target' model of irradiated cell survival the problem of optimal fractionation of the given total dose into n fractions is treated. For m = 1, n arbitrary, and n = 1, 2, m arbitrary, complete solution is obtained. In other cases an approximation procedure is constructed. Stability of extremal values and upper bounds of the efficiency functional with respect to perturbation of radiosensitivity distributions for normal and tumor tissues is demonstrated.

We propose an approximation for the inverse first passage time problem. It is similar in spirit and method to the tangent approximation for the original first passage time problem. We provide evidence that the technique is quite accurate in many cases. We also identify some cases where the approximation performs poorly.

We consider discrete-time Markov chains with Polish state space. The large deviations principle for empirical measures of a Markov chain can equivalently be stated in Laplace principle form, which builds on the convex dual pair of relative entropy (or Kullback– Leibler divergence) and cumulant generating functional f ↦ ln ʃ exp (f). Following the approach by Lacker (2016) in the independent and identically distributed case, we generalize the Laplace principle to a greater class of convex dual pairs. We present in depth one application arising from this extension, which includes large deviation results and a weak law of large numbers for certain robust Markov chains—similar to Markov set chains—where we model robustness via the first Wasserstein distance. The setting and proof of the extended Laplace principle are based on the weak convergence approach to large deviations by Dupuis and Ellis (2011).
