Preservation of stochastic orders through the system signature has captured the attention of researchers in recent years. Signature-based comparisons have been made for the usual stochastic order, hazard rate order, and likelihood ratio orders. However, for the mean residual life (MRL) order, it has recently been proved that the preservation result does not hold true in general, but rather holds for a particular class of distributions. In this paper, we study whether or not a similar preservation result holds for the mean inactivity time (MIT) order. We prove that the MIT order is not preserved from signatures to system lifetimes with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) components, but holds for special classes of distributions. The relationship between these classes and the order statistics is also highlighted. Furthermore, the distribution-free comparison of the performance of coherent systems with dependent and identically distributed (d.i.d.) components is studied under the MIT ordering, using diagonal-dependent copulas and distorted distributions.

Consider a decision-maker who is in charge of a number of activities. At each of a sequence of decision points in time, he selects—on the basis of their performance—the set of activities to be continued further and allocates his limited resources among them. Activities receiving larger allocations tend to improve their performance, while others receiving smaller allocations tend to deteriorate. We present a controlled random walk model for the progress of these activities. The problem of maximizing the net infinite horizon discounted return is formulated in the framework of Markov decision theory, and existence of optimal strategies established. It is shown that both the optimal selection and allocation strategies exhibit a ‘favoring the leaders' behavior. Finally, explicit solutions to certain special cases are obtained illustrating these results.

A star-like circuit-switching network with multistage service is considered. Likelihood ratio ordering is used to show that there exists an optimal threshold for the mean number of messages processed through the network as a function of the input traffic intensity.

The ‘coupon collection problem’ refers to a class of occupancy problems in which j identical items are distributed, independently and at random, to n cells, with no restrictions on multiple occupancy. Identifying the cells as coupons, a coupon is ‘collected’ if the cell is occupied by one or more of the distributed items; thus, some coupons may never be collected, whereas others may be collected once or twice or more. We call the number of coupons collected exactly r times coupons of type r. The coupon collection model we consider is general, in that a random number of purchases occurs at each stage of collecting a large number of coupons; the sample sizes at each stage are independent and identically distributed according to a sampling distribution. The joint behavior of the various types is an intricate problem. In fact, there is a variety of joint central limit theorems (and other limit laws) that arise according to the interrelation between the mean, variance, and range of the sampling distribution, and of course the phase (how far we are in the collection processes). According to an appropriate combination of the mean of the sampling distribution and the number of available coupons, the phase is sublinear, linear, or superlinear. In the sublinear phase, the normalization that produces a Gaussian limit law for uncollected coupons can be used to obtain a multivariate central limit law for at most two other types — depending on the rates of growth of the mean and variance of the sampling distribution, we may have a joint central limit theorem between types 0 and 1, or between types 0, 1, and 2. In the linear phase we have a multivariate central limit theorem among the types 0, 1,…, k for any fixed k.

This paper presents a powerful characterisation for the structure of internal vertices of the STIT's I-segments. The characterisation allows certain mathematical analyses to be performed easily. We demonstrate this by deriving new results for various topological properties of the tessellation: for example, the numbers of various types of edge and cell side within the typical I-segment. The characterisation also provides a tool for the calculations of metric properties of the tessellation; many new length distributions and frame-coverage results are given.

In [1], a deterministic counting rate condition is shown to be necessary and sufficient for a counting process induced on a Markov step process Z to be multivariate Poisson. We show here that the result continues to hold without Z being a Markov step process.

The interpretation of the ‘standard’ Palm version of a stationary random measure ξ is that it behaves like ξ conditioned on containing the origin in its mass. The interpretation of the ‘modified’ Palm version is that it behaves like ξ seen from a typical location in its mass. In this paper we shall focus on the modified Palm version, comparing it with the standard version in the transparent case of mixed biased coin tosses, and then establishing a limit theorem that motivates the above interpretation in the case of random measures on locally compact second countable Abelian groups possessing Følner averaging sets.

The IFR property of the stochastic process governing a one-component system supported by an inactive standby and a repair facility when the lifetime of one component and the repair time of the other component are dependent, is established. We solve the problem of selecting repair rates to maximize the steady-state availability for given component failure rates when a lower bound for the MTBF and upper bounds for the steady-state expected number of repairs of the components per unit time and expected number of failures of the system per unit time are given.

Consider the following migration process based on a closed network of N queues with $K_N$ customers. Each station is a $\cdot$/M/$\infty$ queue with service (or migration) rate $\mu$. Upon departure, a customer is routed independently and uniformly at random to another station. In addition to migration, these customers are subject to a susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) dynamics. That is, customers are in one of two states: I for infected, or S for susceptible. Customers can swap their state either from I to S or from S to I only in stations. More precisely, at any station, each susceptible customer becomes infected with the instantaneous rate $\alpha Y$ if there are Y infected customers in the station, whereas each infected customer recovers and becomes susceptible with rate $\beta$. We let N tend to infinity and assume that $\lim_{N\to \infty} K_N/N= \eta $, where $\eta$ is a positive constant representing the customer density. The main problem of interest concerns the set of parameters of such a system for which there exists a stationary regime where the epidemic survives in the limiting system. The latter limit will be referred to as the thermodynamic limit. We use coupling and stochastic monotonicity arguments to establish key properties of the associated Markov processes, which in turn allow us to give the structure of the phase transition diagram of this thermodynamic limit with respect to $\eta$. The analysis of the Kolmogorov equations of this SIS model reduces to that of a wave-type PDE for which we have found no explicit solution. This plain SIS model is one among several companion stochastic processes that exhibit both random migration and contagion. Two of them are discussed in the present paper as they provide variants to the plain SIS model as well as some bounds and approximations. These two variants are the departure-on-change-of-state (DOCS) model and the averaged-infection-rate (AIR) model, which both admit closed-form solutions. The AIR system is a classical mean-field model where the infection mechanism based on the actual population of infected customers is replaced by a mechanism based on some empirical average of the number of infected customers in all stations. The latter admits a product-form solution. DOCS features accelerated migration in that each change of SIS state implies an immediate departure. This model leads to another wave-type PDE that admits a closed-form solution. In this text, the main focus is on the closed stochastic networks and their limits. The open systems consisting of a single station with Poisson input are instrumental in the analysis of the thermodynamic limits and are also of independent interest. This class of SIS dynamics has incarnations in virtually all queueing networks of the literature.

We study the large-volume asymptotics of the sum of power-weighted edge lengths $\sum_{e \in E}|e|^\alpha$ in Poisson-based spatial random networks. In the regime $\alpha > d$, we provide a set of sufficient conditions under which the upper-large-deviation asymptotics are characterized by a condensation phenomenon, meaning that the excess is caused by a negligible portion of Poisson points. Moreover, the rate function can be expressed through a concrete optimization problem. This framework encompasses in particular directed, bidirected, and undirected variants of the k-nearest-neighbor graph, as well as suitable $\beta$-skeletons.

This paper deals with censoring of infinite-state banded Markov chains. Censoring involves reducing the time spent in states outside a certain set of states to 0 without affecting the number of visits within this set. We show that, if all states are transient, there is, besides the standard censored Markov chain, a nonstandard censored Markov chain which is stochastic. Both the stochastic and the substochastic solutions are found by censoring a sequence of finite transition matrices. If all matrices in the sequence are stochastic, the stochastic solution arises in the limit, whereas the substochastic solution arises if the matrices in the sequence are substochastic. We also show that, if the Markov chain is recurrent, the only solution is the stochastic solution. Censoring is particularly fruitful when applied to quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes. It turns out that key matrices in such processes are not unique, a fact that has been observed by several authors. We note that the stochastic solution is important for the analysis of finite queues.

A conjecture due to Block et al. (1989), concerning the number of critical connection vectors to the various performance levels of a discrete L-superadditive structure function, is proved. When the components of the discrete L-superadditive structure function are further assumed to satisfy a certain relevance condition due to Griffith (1980), it is shown that there is exactly one critical connection vector to each performance level.

Suppose that m drivers each choose a preferred parking space in a linear car park with n spots. In order, each driver goes to their chosen spot and parks there if possible, and otherwise takes the next available spot if it exists. If all drivers park successfully, the sequence of choices is called a parking function. Classical parking functions correspond to the case $m=n$.

We investigate various probabilistic properties of a uniform parking function. Through a combinatorial construction termed a parking function multi-shuffle, we give a formula for the law of multiple coordinates in the generic situation $m \lesssim n$. We further deduce all possible covariances: between two coordinates, between a coordinate and an unattempted spot, and between two unattempted spots. This asymptotic scenario in the generic situation $m \lesssim n$ is in sharp contrast with that of the special situation $m=n$.

A generalization of parking functions called interval parking functions is also studied, in which each driver is willing to park only in a fixed interval of spots. We construct a family of bijections between interval parking functions with n cars and n spots and edge-labeled spanning trees with $n+1$ vertices and a specified root.

We analyse the jigsaw percolation process, which may be seen as a measure of whether two graphs on the same vertex set are ‘jointly connected’. Bollobás, Riordan, Slivken, and Smith (2017) proved that, when the two graphs are independent binomial random graphs, whether the jigsaw process percolates undergoes a phase transition when the product of the two probabilities is $\Theta({1}/{(n\ln n)})$. We show that this threshold is sharp, and that it lies at ${1}/{(4n\ln n)}$.

The asymptotic behavior is studied for an interacting particle system that involves independent motion and random sampling. For a fixed sampling rate, the empirical process of the particle system converges to the Fleming-Viot process when the number of particles approaches ∞. If the sampling rate approaches 0 as the number of particles becomes large, the corresponding empirical process will converge to the deterministic flow of the motion. In the main results of this paper, we study the corresponding central limit theorems and large deviations. Both the Gaussian limits and the large deviations depend on the sampling scales explicitly.
