We present a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for the time to absorption of Λ-coalescents with dust started from n blocks, as n→∞. The proofs rely on an approximation of the logarithm of the block-counting process by means of a drifted subordinator.

In this paper we present results on the concentration properties of the smoothing and filtering distributions of some partially observed chaotic dynamical systems. We show that, rather surprisingly, for the geometric model of the Lorenz equations, as well as some other chaotic dynamical systems, the smoothing and filtering distributions do not concentrate around the true position of the signal, as the number of observations tends to ∞. Instead, under various assumptions on the observation noise, we show that the expected value of the diameter of the support of the smoothing and filtering distributions remains lower bounded by a constant multiplied by the standard deviation of the noise, independently of the number of observations. Conversely, under rather general conditions, the diameter of the support of the smoothing and filtering distributions are upper bounded by a constant multiplied by the standard deviation of the noise. To some extent, applications to the three-dimensional Lorenz 63 model and to the Lorenz 96 model of arbitrarily large dimension are considered.

We study the stochastic comparison of interacting particle systems where the state space of each particle is a finite set endowed with a partial order, and several particles may change their value at a time. For these processes we give local conditions, on the rates of change, that assure their comparability. We also analyze the case where one of the processes does not have any changes that involve several particles, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for their comparability. The proofs are based on the explicit construction of an order-preserving Markovian coupling. We show the applicability of our results by studying the stochastic comparison of infinite-station Jackson networks and batch-arrival, batch-service, and assemble-transfer queueing networks.

A method originating from statistical mechanics (low-density and high-temperature expansions) is used to prove the existence and uniqueness of a stationary regime for switching networks on finite or infinite graphs. The main assumption is that the message (customer) flows circulating through the network are ‘localized' in the sense that, for any message, the probability of having a long path is rapidly decreasing (and, moreover, a path of a ‘typical' message consists of one line). The switching rule combines message-switching and circuit-switching principles. The stationary regime for the network under consideration may be treated as a ‘small perturbation' of the ‘idealized' regime in the totally decoupled network where all the messages have single line paths.

The wind exerts a sorting effect on particles of sands and, under certain stable conditions that occur frequently but whose nature is little understood, the sorting results in log-size distributions of the hyperbolic form, first noted by R. A. Bagnold. Here, for wind-tunnel experiments a stochastic model is constructed which exhibits a sorting effect deriving from the dependence of distance travelled on the size of the single particle. Under rather specific, experimentally testable assumptions the model reproduces log-size distributions which are of the hyperbolic type and show a variation with distance along the wind tunnel that accords with experimental findings of R. A. Bagnold.

In this paper, the behavior of a Gaussian random field near an ‘upcrossing' of a fixed level is investigated by strengthening the results of Wilson and Adler (1982) to full weak convergence in the space of functions which have continuous derivatives up to order 2. In Section 1, weak convergence and model processes are briefly discussed. The model field of Wilson and Adler (1982) is constructed in Section 2 using full weak convergence. Some of its properties are also investigated. Section 3 contains asymptotic results for the model field, including the asymptotic distributions of the Lebesgue measure of a particular excursion set and the maximum of the model field as the level becomes arbitrarily high.

Let be a real-valued, homogeneous, and isotropic random field indexed in . When restricted to those indices with , the Euclidean length of , equal to r (a positive constant), then the random field resides on the surface of a sphere of radius r. Using a modified stratified spherical sampling plan (Brown (1993a)) on the sphere, define to be a realization of the random process and to be the cardinality of . A bootstrap algorithm is presented and conditions for strong uniform consistency of the bootstrap cumulative distribution function of the standardized sample mean, , are given. We illustrate the bootstrap algorithm with global land-area data.

Recent research at Sheffield, which is briefly described below, has been concerned with chain-binomial models, and stochastic path integrals under infective curves.

In Weil (2001) formulae were proved for stationary Boolean models Z in ℝd with convex or polyconvex grains, which express the densities (specific mean values) of mixed volumes of Z in terms of related mean values of the underlying Poisson particle process X. These formulae were then used to show that in dimensions 2 and 3 the densities of mixed volumes of Z determine the intensity γ of X. For d = 4, a corresponding result was also stated, but the proof given was incomplete, since in the formula for the density of the Euler characteristic V̅0(Z) of Z a term $\overline V^{(0)}_{2,2}(X,X)$ was missing. This was pointed out in Goodey and Weil (2002), where it was also explained that a new decomposition result for mixed volumes and mixed translative functionals would be needed to complete the proof. Such a general decomposition result has recently been proved by Hug, Rataj, and Weil (2013), (2018) and is based on flag measures of the convex bodies involved. Here, we show that such flag representations not only lead to a correct derivation of the four-dimensional result, but even yield a corresponding uniqueness theorem in all dimensions. In the proof of the latter we make use of Alesker’s representation theorem for translation invariant valuations. We also discuss which shape information can be obtained in this way and comment on the situation in the nonstationary case.

The Marcinkiewicz strong law, limn→∞(1 / n1/p)∑k=1n(Dk - D) = 0 almost surely with p ∈ (1, 2), is studied for outer products Dk = {XkX̅kT}, where {Xk} and {X̅k} are both two-sided (multivariate) linear processes (with coefficient matrices (Cl), (C̅l) and independent and identically distributed zero-mean innovations {Ξ} and {Ξ̅}). Matrix sequences Cl and C ̅l can decay slowly enough (as |l| → ∞) that {Xk,X ̅k} have long-range dependence, while {Dk} can have heavy tails. In particular, the heavy-tail and long-range-dependence phenomena for {Dk} are handled simultaneously and a new decoupling property is proved that shows the convergence rate is determined by the worst of the heavy tails or the long-range dependence, but not the combination. The main result is applied to obtain a Marcinkiewicz strong law of large numbers for stochastic approximation, nonlinear function forms, and autocovariances.

A simple model of a neuron is proposed, not intended to be biologically faithful, but to incorporate dynamic and stochastic features which seem to be realistic for both the natural and the artificial case. It is shown that the use of feedback for assemblies of such neurons can produce bistable behaviour and sharpen the discrimination of the assembly to the level of input. Particular attention is paid to bistable devices which are to serve as bit-stores (and so constitute components of a memory) and which suffer a disturbing input due to mutual interference. Approximate expressions are obtained for the equilibrium distribution of the excitation level for such assemblies and for the expected escape time of such an assembly from a metastable excitation level.
