We consider a Yule process until the total population reaches size n ≫ 1, and assume that neutral mutations occur with high probability 1 - p (in the sense that each child is a new mutant with probability 1 - p, independently of the other children), where p = pn ≪ 1. We establish a general strategy for obtaining Poisson limit laws and a weak law of large numbers for the number of subpopulations exceeding a given size and apply this to some mutation regimes of particular interest. Finally, we give an application to subcritical Bernoulli bond percolation on random recursive trees with percolation parameter pn tending to 0.

Motivated by recent studies of big samples, this work aims to construct a parametric model which is characterized by the following features: (i) a ‘local’ reinforcement, i.e. a reinforcement mechanism mainly based on the last observations, (ii) a random persistent fluctuation of the predictive mean, and (iii) a long-term almost sure convergence of the empirical mean to a deterministic limit, together with a chi-squared goodness-of-fit result for the limit probabilities. This triple purpose is achieved by the introduction of a new variant of the Eggenberger–Pólya urn, which we call the rescaled Pólya urn. We provide a complete asymptotic characterization of this model, pointing out that, for a certain choice of the parameters, it has properties different from the ones typically exhibited by the other urn models in the literature. Therefore, beyond the possible statistical application, this work could be interesting for those who are concerned with stochastic processes with reinforcement.

This second meeting in the series was organised principally by Denis Mollison and Eric Renshaw with the help of their respective departments and a grant from the Royal Society. The fifty or so participants were drawn from various backgrounds, both theoretical and applied, and a diverse programme of twelve papers was presented, embracing both the development of mathematical theory and the collection and analysis of field data. Many of the non-speakers contributed to the lively discussion which prevailed. Short abstracts of the papers are appended, and the authors would be happy to answer requests for further information.

This paper describes the early and final properties of a general S–I–R epidemic process in which the infectives behave independently, each infective has a random number of contacts with the others in the population, and individuals vary in their susceptibility to infection. For the case of a large initial number of susceptibles and a small (finite) initial number of infectives, we derive the threshold behavior and the limiting distribution for the final state of the epidemic. Also, we show strong convergence of the epidemic process over any finite time interval to a birth and death process, extending the results of Ball (1983). These complement some results due to Butler (1994), who considers the case of a large initial number of infectives.

From the point of view of practical usefulness, the results of modelling exercises should not be too sensitive to the detailed assumptions built into the model. Consequently, it is a great advantage if structural assumptions are kept to a minimum.

We consider a feed-forward network with a single-server station serving jobs with multiple levels of priority. The service discipline is preemptive in that the server always serves a job with the current highest level of priority. For this system with discontinuous dynamics, we establish the sample path large deviation principle using a weak convergence argument. In the special case where jobs have two different levels of priority, we also explicitly identify the exponential decay rate of the total population overflow probabilities by examining the geometry of the zero-level sets of the system Hamiltonians.

We consider a constant rate traffic which shares a buffer with a random cross traffic. A first come first served or priority service discipline is applied at the buffer. After service at the first buffer the constant rate traffic moves to a play-out buffer. Both buffers provide service at constant rate and infinite waiting room. We investigate logarithmic large and moderate deviation asymptotics for the tail probabilities of the steady-state queue length distribution at the play-out buffer for long-range dependent cross traffic in critical loading. We characterize the asymptotic behavior of the cross traffic which leads to a large queue length at the play-out buffer and compare it to the one for renewal cross traffic.

We study a class of tenable, irreducible, nondegenerate zero-balanced Pólya urn schemes. We give a full characterization of the class by sufficient and necessary conditions. Only forms with a certain cyclic structure in their replacement matrix are admissible. The scheme has a steady state into proportions governed by the principal (left) eigenvector of the average replacement matrix. We study the gradual change for any such urn containing n → ∞ balls from the initial condition to the steady state. We look at the status of an urn starting with an asymptotically positive proportion of each color after jn draws. We identify three phases of jn: the growing sublinear, the linear, and the superlinear. In the growing sublinear phase the number of balls of different colors has an asymptotic joint multivariate normal distribution, with mean and covariance structure that are influenced by the initial conditions. In the linear phase a different multivariate normal distribution kicks in, in which the influence of the initial conditions is attenuated. The steady state is not a good approximation until a certain superlinear amount of time has elapsed. We give interpretations for how the results in different phases conjoin at the ‘seam lines’. In fact, these Gaussian phases are all manifestations of one master theorem. The results are obtained via multivariate martingale theory. We conclude with some illustrating examples.

Known results for the two-sex birth-death population process are extended to the case where immigration of females is allowed. It is shown that the methods used follow those for the standard birth, death and immigration process.

We establish recurrence and transience criteria for critical branching processes in random environments with immigration. These results are then applied to the recurrence and transience of a recurrent random walk in a random environment on ℤ disturbed by cookies inducing a drift to the right of strength 1.

In this paper we develop a constructive approach to studying continuously and discretely sampled functionals of Lévy processes. Estimates for the rate of convergence of the discretely sampled functionals to the continuously sampled functionals are derived, reducing the study of the latter to that of the former. Laguerre reduction series for the discretely sampled functionals are developed, reducing their study to that of the moment generating function of the pertinent Lévy processes and to that of the moments of these processes in particular. The results are applied to questions of contingent claim valuation, such as the explicit valuation of Asian options, and illustrated in the case of generalized inverse Gaussian Lévy processes.

The Palm version of a stationary random subset of a d-dimensional grid is contructed using the two-step change-of-origin and change-of-measure method. An elementary proof is given of the fact that the Palm version is characterized by point-stationarity (distributional invariance under bijective shifts of the origin from a point of the set to another point of the set).

In this paper we consider the beta(2 − α, α)-coalescents with 1 < α < 2 and study the moments of external branches, in particular, the total external branch length of an initial sample of n individuals. For this class of coalescents, it has been proved that nα-1T(n) →DT, where T(n) is the length of an external branch chosen at random and T is a known nonnegative random variable. For beta(2 − α, α)-coalescents with 1 < α < 2, we obtain limn→+∞n3α-5 𝔼(Lext(n) − n2-α𝔼T)2 = ((α − 1)Γ(α + 1))2Γ(4 − α) / ((3 − α)Γ(4 − 2α)).

We investigate the impact of Knightian uncertainty on the optimal timing policy of an ambiguity-averse decision-maker in the case where the underlying factor dynamics follow a multidimensional Brownian motion and the exercise payoff depends on either a linear combination of the factors or the radial part of the driving factor dynamics. We present a general characterization of the value of the optimal timing policy and the worst-case measure in terms of a family of explicitly identified excessive functions generating an appropriate class of supermartingales. In line with previous findings based on linear diffusions, we find that ambiguity accelerates timing in comparison with the unambiguous setting. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that ambiguity may lead to stationarity in models which typically do not possess stationary behavior. In this way, our results indicate that ambiguity may act as a stabilizing mechanism.

An occupancy problem with an infinite number of bins and a random probability vector for the locations of the balls is considered. The respective sizes of the bins are related to the split times of a Yule process. The asymptotic behavior of the landscape of the first empty bins, i.e. the set of corresponding indices represented by point processes, is analyzed and convergences in distribution to mixed Poisson processes are established. Additionally, the influence of the random environment, the random probability vector, is analyzed. It is represented by two main components: an independent, identically distributed sequence and a fixed random variable. Each of these components has a specific impact on the qualitative behavior of the stochastic model. It is shown in particular that, for some values of the parameters, some rare events, which are identified, determine the asymptotic behavior of the average values of the number of empty bins in some regions.

For a typical cell of a homogeneous Poisson-Voronoi tessellation in ℝd, it is shown that the variance of the volume of the intersection of the typical cell with any measurable subset of ℝd is bounded by the variance of the volume of the typical cell. It is also shown that the variance of the volume of the intersection of the typical cell with a translation of itself is bounded by four times the variance of the volume of the typical cell. These bounds are applied to show large-dimensional volume degeneracy as d tends to ∞. An extension to the kth nearest-point Poisson-Voronoi tessellation for k ≥ 2 is also considered.

In this paper we estimate the expectation of the size of the largest component in a supercritical random geometric graph; the expectation tends to a polynomial on a rate of exponential decay. We sharpen the expectation's asymptotic result using the central limit theorem. Similar results can be obtained for the size of the biggest open cluster, and for the number of open clusters of percolation on a box, and so on.

We introduce a new class of spatial-temporal point processes based on Voronoi tessellations. At each step of such a process, a point is chosen at random according to a distribution determined by the associated Voronoi cells. The point is then removed, and a new random point is added to the configuration. The dynamics are simple and intuitive and could be applied to modelling natural phenomena. We prove ergodicity of these processes under wide conditions.

A general way to look at kernel estimates of densities is to regard them as stochastic integrals with respect to a spatial point process. Under regularity conditions these behave asymptotically as if the point process were Poisson. However, this Poisson approximation may not work well if the data exhibits a lot of clustering. In this paper a more refined approximation to the characteristic functions of the integrals is developed. For clustered data, a ‘Gauss–Poisson’ approximation works better than the Poisson.
