Defining Hybrid Heroes: The Leadership Spectrum from Scoundrel to Saint defines the hero (and his or her journey) from a hybrid perspective, exploring the spectrum from scoundrel to saint. It utilizes a more dynamic and situational outlook, regarding heroism not only as a personal characteristic, but also as a series of heroic acts within a given situation.
The book examines the hybrid hero from several distinctive points of view, e.g. through lenses dominated by fiction, business, politics and psychology, and paints a new, more complex portrait that takes full advantage of the authors' varied backgrounds. Inge Brokerhof has an academic background in psychology and has studied the impact of narrative fiction on workplace variables, such as career identity, employability and moral leadership. The world is increasingly complex and ever changing. One of these changes involves the increasing trans-nationalization by diverse sociopolitical groups/institutions, including the state, the corporate, as well as different transnational communities, including professionalized social groups. Such groups also include transnational communities with migrant-refugee history and background. These communities often link their local host environments with their homeland origins in multiple ways. They often do such activities through diversified, transnationally situational and context-based sociopolitical engagements and mobilizations toward and with multiple social, political, and economic actors. Their main aim and purpose is to achieve and maintain recognition and dignified lives as individuals, groups, as well as communities. Through resisting exclusion and trying to help the excluded, they often approach transnational issues with cautious responsibility and cooperation as well as collaboration with multiple public, civic, and private actors.

What is culture? The history of our discipline - whether we call it ethnology or social anthropology - shows that there is not a constant answer to this question or even a constant object of study. How can we search for a unifying answer to what makes us human even as we observe how immensely varied we are? And how can we explain that such difference is the very core of what makes us similarly human?
This book explores the idea of ethnography as a method for understanding cultural flow in particular contexts and suggests that anthropology can do its most important work by tracing the history of social formations. Nothing about culture is static, yet something best-called culture sustains itself over time. At the heart of anthropology is the attempt to understand the concept of culture, even as we continue to challenge its definition in our field.
This short volume presents the Jensen Memorial Lectures delivered at the Frobenius Institute for Research in Cultural Anthropology at Goethe University, Frankfurt, in 2019. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British literature, Scandinavia emerged as a setting for Gothic terror. This book explores the extensive use of Nordic superstition as it provided a vocabulary for Gothic texts, examining the cultural significance these references held for writers exploring Britain's northern heritage. In Gothic publications, Nordic superstition sometimes parallels the representations of Catholicism, allowing writers to gloat at its phantasms and delusions. Thus, runic spells, incantations, and necromantic communications (of which Norse tradition afforded many examples) could replace practices usually assigned to Catholic superstition. Yet Nordic lore did more than merely supplant hackneyed Gothic formulas; it presented readers with an alternative conception of 'Otherness'. Nordic texts - chiefly based on the Edda and the supernatural Scandinavian ballad tradition - were seen as pre-Christian beliefs of the Gothic (i.e., Germanic) peoples, including the Anglo-Saxons. The book traces the development of this Nordic Gothic, situating it within wider literary, historical, political, and cultural contexts.
This book uses several case studies to demonstrate current problems with international extradition. These include political issues, time delays, jurisdictional problems, and conflict between surrender and the human rights of extraditees. The normative assumptions underpinning extradition ensure these procedures are more likely to prioritise international comity between nation states, rather than individual human rights protections. This creates a system with limited judicial relief for extraditees that require extensive proof of high human rights thresholds, as well as a prominent rule of non-inquiry, restrictive evidence regulations, and deference to the executive. The book argues that a defendant-centred approach to extradition reform is needed that prioritises a right to fairness as a core value for promoting global justice. This includes considering changes to enable greater post-extradition monitoring of extradited people and broadening rules for extraditees to submit evidence to support a claim against surrender. New and more viable extradition alternatives also involve transferring evidence to shift the trial to the location where most of the offending activity occurred and sentencing in the extraditee's home jurisdiction. These proposals aim to counter the current unequal levels of authority that favour the power of both the requesting and requested state over the rights of the individual.
China has made nationalism central as the country seeks to achieve a 'rejuvenation of the Chinese nation'. The new wave of consumer nationalism in China reached a fever pitch in recent years. This book will be the first book that systematically analyzes the different waves of consumer nationalism in China, the types of its nationalistic consumer actions, and the critical impact of the new wave which has increased the possibility of a consumer base that could turn hostile at any moment.
It argues that the outbursts of nationalist consumer outrage have become an increasing risk for businesses in China or businesses dealing with Chinese markets and that as China faces growing diplomatic challenges abroad, multinational companies need to enhance focus and strategic planning in communication operations when dealing with the world's second-largest economy.
Theory Does Not Exist: Comparative Ancient and Modern Explorations in Psychoanalysis, Deconstruction, and Rhetoric is a collection of essays that makes a strong case for a comparative approach to what we term 'theory' today. This book seeks to identify the main threads of a resolutely complex course of thought which has contributed greatly to sociology. Although he founded no 'school,' Raymond Boudon certainly made original contributions to the discipline in his own time, including his theory of rationality, his interpretation of the work of the founders of sociology, and his explanation of educational inequalities. He also presented convincing arguments about how the overly narrow utilitarianism of mainstream economists was incomplete and betrayed major theoretical gaps. It is true in any case that his thought laid the groundwork for many theoretical and empirical social studies. Through an analysis of the most important parts of this thought, each of the chapters will not merely demonstrate the scientific rigor which can be associated to his work, but also show how it remains relevant to our understanding of contemporary society and how it can hence be used for future research projects.
There can be no doubt, Boudon's thought has for various reasons undergone new assessments. Chapters included in this book hence reflect a variety of points of view on how his work can be understood, criticized, and used for future research endeavors.
The present collection of essays includes contributors from no fewer than two or three generations of social scientists whose thinking is rooted in many different intellectual traditions. Yet, these scholars all share in common a special concern for how Boudon's work can be seen as being of great importance for the proper understanding of social phenomena.
Taxidermy and the Gothic: The Horror of Still Life is the first extended study of the Gothic's collusion with taxidermy. It tells the story of the emergence in the long nineteenth century of the twin golden ages of the Gothic genre and the practice of taxidermy, and their shared rhetorical and narratological strategies, anxieties, and sensibilities. It follows the thread into twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture, including recent horror film, fiction, television, and visual arts. Like late Victorian Walter Potter's infamous taxidermied two-headed kitten, the Gothic and taxidermy are two discursive bodies, stuffed and stitched together. Moving beyond the well-worn path that treats taxidermy as a sentimental art or art of mourning, this book takes readers down a new dark trail, finding an overlooked but rich tradition in the Gothic that aligns it with the affective and corporeal work of horror and the unsettling aesthetics, experiences, and pleasures that come with it. Over the course of four chapters, it argues that in addition to entwined origins, taxidermy's uncanny appearance in Gothic and horror texts is a driving force in generating fear. The core argument of the book is that taxidermy embodies the phenomenological horror of stuckness, of being-there. Taxidermy often sits, presiding over characters in critical moments in Gothic texts, sometimes foreshadowing their own fate, but most frequently taxidermy works to amplify the affect of horror, generating anxiety over what will be forever preserved and never escaped: the violence of life.
The use of smartphones displays many facets of contemporary mobility. Smartphones and those applications downloaded to the device enhance connectivity in regard to socialisation, entertainment, transactions, networking, activism, and mobilisation. While the device and applications help community building and boost a sense of belonging, they also generate alienation, exclusion and marginalisation. Such online mobility of capital, commodity, idea and emotion visualised on smartphones cannot take place without the parallel existence of technological, sociopolitical and economic infrastructure that is established in the physical world offline. In this light, this book argues that the use of smartphones, and the constant switch between online and offline, has meshed virtual, social and physical mobilities together. However, such inseparability is yet to break down the boundary that marks their distinctive and discrete existence. Interrogating what causes these obstructions will highlight the indispensable role played by the material and social infrastructure in this meshed mobility as well as the embedded structural constraints. It is equally important to look at migration and mobility beyond the points of departure and destination and trace the process in between. Thus, this book offers an insight into the compression and tension between online and offline and the interlaced modes of mobility. On the whole, the articles included in this book aim to answer two critical questions: (1) How does the use of smartphones by migrants and the people connected with them generate new modes of mobility? (2) How do online activities and offline infrastructure interact and result in this compression?
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic imposed immobility on large sectors of the world's population, with confinement becoming for several years an everyday reality. The lives of those who previously enjoyed the privileges of being 'fast castes' ground to a halt, while at the same time the displacement of more vulnerable populations along well-established migration corridors has been radically reduced. The result has been a recalibration of the scale of journeying, with travellers slowing down and readjusting their relationship to the proximate and nearby. This situation has provided an opportunity for those who study travel and travel writing to rethink their object of study. This volume explores and historicizes the phenomenon of 'microtravel', designating slower journeys within a limited radius which allow, and sometimes necessitate, new forms of experiencing the world.
The contributors reveal how these practices are far from new and are indeed evident across numerous examples of journey narratives from earlier periods. The volume considers a diverse range of forms, including fictional texts. It also includes ficto-critical writing, allowing a fuller exploration of new approaches to microtravel in the twenty-first century. Sometimes deceleration is reduced to immobility, with the traditional horizontal axis of travel replaced by a burrowing down into time, place and space.
This scholarly biography traces the life and art of Lebanese-American neo-expressionist, Nabil Kanso (1940-2019). It explores key moments across the artist's transnational career by foregrounding his longest-running, internationally toured exhibition, the Journey of Art for Peace (1985-1993). More specifically, it traces the historical trajectory of his 10 × 28 mural-scale painting, Lebanon, from the circumstances of its production at the height of the Lebanese Civil War in 1983, through its short-lived exhibition history with the Split of Life series in the few years that followed. The book scaffolds an understanding of the artist as an activist and works toward offering distinctly spatial readings of his painterly practice, of which the act of bearing witness is highlighted as permeating the entirety of his oeuvre. It concludes with a contemporary recontextualization of Lebanon in the country's current social, political, and cultural climate, and emphasizes the artist's work as essential to the theorization of larger traditions of political and protest art.
The first of its kind and the result of a research fellowship wherein the author was invited to be the first to work through the artist's unpublished archive, this book lays the groundwork for scholarship on the art of Nabil Kanso. It draws extensively on primary source material, including personal notes, diaries, sketchbooks, correspondences, paintings, watercolors, photographs, recorded interviews, and the like.
Journalism has been in a state of disruption since the development of the Internet. The Metaverse is likely to fuel even further disruption in journalism. Digital platforms and journalism enterprises are already investing substantial resources into the Metaverse, or its likely components of artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality. Although research shows most of the public has little knowledge of the Metaverse, many are keenly interested in what it or its components may bring. Gartner (2022) predicts that a quarter of the public will spend at least one hour per day in the Metaverse by 2026. Journalism may be an important part of this future.
This book will critically examine the nature of the Metaverse and its implications for journalism. In particular, the book will examine how the advance of a broadband, interactive and immersive Internet called the Metaverse may change the content and format of news, the nature of journalistic work, who or what is a journalist, the nature and structure of the new industry and how it is funded, as well as the fundamental role of journalism in a digital society.
This book builds on a vision of the Metaverse as an immersive and interactive virtual world, a key development in the next generation of the broadband, publicly accessible Internet. It will examine the implications of the Metaverse for journalism in four broad domains, including content, how journalists work, structural and systemic considerations, and user and public engagement with news.
The poems, novels and novellas that draw from paramythic forms and tropes draw from its symbolic power and its performative function, and often use it subversively to speak the unspeakable. They often merge incommensurate forms and include foreign words and registers or dialects, which lead to the need for translation, as well as the possibilities for what Apter calls the 'untranslatable'. Foreign words and strange customs as well as oral story-telling forms may be untranslatable to outsiders - but their usefulness is tied to what Apter refers to as a 'linguistic form of creative failure with homeopathic uses'. So, when the paramythic voice, forms and tropes are located, translated, compared and interpreted in works by Australian writers having a Greek heritage, we have a new way to read Australian literature. We no longer read these texts in isolation given an affiliation with an ethnic minority group, but instead we see these as works that, as Gunew says, 'share a world', works that include and converse with other neo-cosmopolitan writers with double or multiple cultural perspectives.
Do translation theorists observe what translators do and develop theories based on that? Do translators gain ideas and tools from studying theories? Or does it go both ways? Or is it neither, and translation scholars are completely separated from practising translators?
In my own translation practice, academic work, and teaching, I find that translation theories, far from being scary and distant from what I do as a translator on a day-to-day basis, actually provide beneficial concepts and strategies that can help me make translatorial decisions. The work of translators like me, in turn, comes to influence the way academics understand and write about what translators do.
I summarise a wide range of translation theories, from across different time periods and parts of the world, and I then follow this by suggesting ideas that stem from these theoretical concepts and that can be of practical use to translators.
This book explores the existing inequities within the U.S. healthcare system and their impacts on individuals and in particular Black women, who seek life-saving healthcare. As a social scientist interested in examining the matter of health inequities, the author was particularly interested in documenting the impact of racial and ethnic inequities on the quest for critical health care in the context of a major health care crisis. More poignantly, as a healthcare consumer recently plunged into the marketplace for life-saving health care, the author systematically explored and documented the process of obtaining care as an African American woman against the backdrop of an emerging global pandemic. This book recounts some of these experiences by showing specific instances where the ogre of race intruded and influenced her access to life-saving care. Among other things, this book argues for increased formal and informal support structures within the health care system that are specifically focused on Black women's survival, well-being and quality of life.
Many Americans believe that current observations of health disparities reflecting increased vulnerability among communities of color are attributable primarily to poor decisions and failure to consult or comply with healthcare professionals. In reality, there are an array of other reasons for the observed vulnerabilities of people of color who must navigate the healthcare system that results from deeply held stereotypes about them and a range of formal and informal institutional practices that do not have their best interests at heart.
Boundaries, borders and margins are related concepts and realities, and each of these can be conceptualized and organized in closed or open ways - with degrees of closure or openness. The logics of stasis and closure, as well as cults of exclusivist and exclusionary sovereignty, are reflected and embodied in the closed xenophobic conceptualization and organization of boundaries, borders and margins. But, an open conceptualization of the borderlands, where mixing and hybridity take place at a rapid, even dizzying, pace, gives rise to Creolization - at the threshold of sovereignties, which can also be imagined. At present, our border zones are spaces of anxiety-ridden security arrangements, violence and death. The existing politics of boundary maintenance is wedded to a cult of sovereignty at various levels, which produces bare lives, bodies and lands. We need the new art of border-crossing to be defined by the notion of camaraderie and shared sovereignties and non-sovereignties. Border zones can also be zones of meetings, communication, transcendence and festive celebration of the limits of our identities. Thus, we need a new art and politics of boundary transmutation, transformation and transcendence, in the broadest possible sense, that entails the production of spatial, scalar, somatic, cognitive, affective and spiritual transitions.
