A 2-yr field study was conducted at Fayetteville, AR, to determine the effect of Palmer amaranth interference on soybean growth and yield. Palmer amaranth density had little effect on soybean height, but soybean canopy width ranged from 77 cm in the weed-free check to 35 cm in plots with 10 plants m–1 of row 12 wk after emergence. Soybean yield reduction was highly correlated to Palmer amaranth biomass at 8 wk after emergence and maturity, soybean biomass at 8 wk after emergence, and Palmer amaranth density. Soybean yield reduction was 17, 27, 32, 48, 64, and 68%, respectively, for Palmer amaranth densities of 033, 0.66, 1, 2, 333, and 10 plants m–1 of row. Soybean yield reduction and Palmer amaranth biomass were linear to approximately 2 Palmer amaranth m–1 of row, suggesting intraspecific interference between adjacent Palmer amaranth is initiated at Palmer amaranth densities between 2 and 3.33 plants m–1 of row.

An in vivo shikimate accumulation assay with excised leaf tissue was developed to provide a fast and reliable method for identifying glyphosate-resistant plants. The assay is based on glyphosate-induced accumulation of shikimate. There was a linear accumulation of shikimate in excised leaf discs of soybean and canola treated with 250 μM glyphosate for 48 h. The IC50 for the accumulation of shikimate in soybean and corn leaf discs was 34 and 87 μM, respectively. Leaf discs excised from glyphosate-resistant corn or soybean did not accumulate shikimate when treated with 500 μM glyphosate. Leaf discs taken from a number of field-grown plants accumulated shikimate in a glyphosate dose–dependent manner. The accumulation of shikimate was dependent on light and the age of the leaf from which the disc was taken. The assay worked either in 96-well microtiter plates or in vials, and it clearly differentiated between glyphosate-resistant and -susceptible crops in which the resistance is due to an alteration of the target site for glyphosate. The assay was simple and robust and has the potential to be used as a high throughput assay to detect glyphosate resistance in weeds.

The continuous use of glyphosate has resulted in the selection of glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotypes in 13 weed species. Decreased translocation of glyphosate to the meristematic tissue is the primary mechanism of resistance in horseweed, hairy fleabane, rigid ryegrass, and Italian ryegrass, and the resistance is inherited as a single, semidominant nuclear trait. The question is: What role does decreased translocation play in glyphosate resistance, and what is the actual mechanism(s)? The enzyme 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), the target site of glyphosate, preferentially accumulates in the active meristems of plants. Inhibition of EPSPS results in the accumulation of shikimate. Leaf disc assays across a number of species show that the maximum accumulation of shikimate occurs in young, rapidly expanding tissue. Gene expression studies have also shown that the gene encoding EPSPS is maximally expressed in meristems. Thus, glyphosate needs to translocate to the growing points of plants to be effective. In some GR weed biotypes, glyphosate moves in the treated leaf via the transpiration stream; but instead of being loaded into the phloem, it is trapped in the distal portion of the leaf. These results suggest that there is some type of inhibition of glyphosate-loading into the phloem in GR plants. However, this mechanism may involve uptake of glyphosate at the cellular level. Shikimate accumulation in isolated leaf discs occurs at high glyphosate concentrations in both susceptible and GR biotypes of horseweed and Italian ryegrass; but at low concentrations, shikimate accumulation occurs only in susceptible biotypes. Decreased cellular uptake of glyphosate might occur by one of four mechanisms: (1) the active uptake system no longer recognizes glyphosate, (2) an active efflux system pumps glyphosate out of the cell into the apoplast, (3) an active efflux system pumps glyphosate out of the chloroplast into the cytoplasm, or (4) glyphosate is pumped into the vacuole and sequestered in the cell.

Several studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of different tillage systems on the vertical seed distribution, seedling recruitment pattern, and persistence of the rigid ryegrass seed bank. Experiments were conducted in South Australia at two locations (Roseworthy Campus and Minlaton, a site on the Yorke Peninsula) in 2003 and 2005. The distribution of surface seeds through the soil profile was associated with the level of soil disturbance. The low–soil-disturbance tillage systems left more seed on the soil surface, whereas the high–soil-disturbance systems buried most of the seeds. The seedling recruitment of rigid ryegrass was lower under the low–soil-disturbance tillage systems than under the high–soil-disturbance tillage systems at both locations. The seedling recruitment was two- to fourfold greater under minimum tillage than under no-till. Not only was the seedling recruitment lower under the low–soil-disturbance tillage systems, biomass accumulation by rigid ryegrass seedlings was also lower under these systems. The carryover of residual viable seeds from one season to the next was similar between the tillage systems. However, seed decay under no-till (48 to 60%) was much greater than under minimum tillage (12 to 39%).

The effects of caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, t-cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 5-sulfosalicylic acid, vanillic acid, and vanillin on growth, photosynthesis, water relations, and chlorophyll content of 3-week-old soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Tracy’] grown in aerated nutrient solution were determined. At concentrations of 10−3 M, caffeic, t-cinnamic, p-coumaric, ferulic, gallic, and vanillic acids significantly reduced dry matter production, leaf expansion, height, leaf production, net assimilation rate (rate of dry matter production per unit leaf area), and leaf area duration (total leaf area present during treatment interval). Chlorogenic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 5-sulfosalicylic acid, and vanillin at 10−3 M did not inhibit growth. None of the 10 compounds at 10−4 M inhibited growth. At concentrations of 10−3 M, caffeic, t-cinnamic, p-coumaric, ferulic, gallic, and vanillic acids severely reduced net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of single, fully expanded leaves. These same compounds also caused marked reductions in leaf chlorophyll content, with net losses of chlorophyll occurring over an 86-h period after treatment.

Saflufenacil (Kixor™) is a new herbicide of the pyrimidinedione chemical class for preplant burndown and selective preemergence dicot weed control in multiple crops, including corn. In this study, the mode of action of saflufenacil was investigated. For initial characterization, a series of biotests was used in a physionomics approach for comprehensive physiological profiling of saflufenacil effects. With the use of treated duckweed plants, metabolite profiling was performed based on quantification of metabolite changes, relative to untreated controls. Physiological and metabolite profiling suggested a mode of action similar to inhibitors of protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO) in tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway. Saflufenacil inhibited PPO enzyme activity in vitro with 50% inhibition of 0.4 nM for the enzymes isolated from black nightshade, velvetleaf, and corn. PPO inhibition by saflufenacil caused accumulations of protoporphyrin IX (Proto) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in leaf tissue of black nightshade and velvetleaf. In corn, only slight increases in Proto and H2O2 were found, which reflects in planta tolerance of this crop. The results show that saflufenacil is a new PPO-inhibiting, peroxidizing herbicide.

Auxinic herbicides are widely used for control of broadleaf weeds in cereal crops and turfgrass. These herbicides are structurally similar to the natural plant hormone auxin, and induce several of the same physiological and biochemical responses at low concentrations. After several decades of research to understand the auxin signal transduction pathway, the receptors for auxin binding and resultant biochemical and physiological responses have recently been discovered in plants. However, the precise mode of action for the auxinic herbicides is not completely understood despite their extensive use in agriculture for over six decades. Auxinic herbicide-resistant weed biotypes offer excellent model species for uncovering the mode of action as well as resistance to these compounds. Compared with other herbicide families, the incidence of resistance to auxinic herbicides is relatively low, with only 29 auxinic herbicide-resistant weed species discovered to date. The relatively low incidence of resistance to auxinic herbicides has been attributed to the presence of rare alleles imparting resistance in natural weed populations, the potential for fitness penalties due to mutations conferring resistance in weeds, and the complex mode of action of auxinic herbicides in sensitive dicot plants. This review discusses recent advances in the auxin signal transduction pathway and its relation to auxinic herbicide mode of action. Furthermore, comprehensive information about the genetics and inheritance of auxinic herbicide resistance and case studies examining mechanisms of resistance in auxinic herbicide-resistant broadleaf weed biotypes are provided. Within the context of recent findings pertaining to auxin biology and mechanisms of resistance to auxinic herbicides, agronomic implications of the evolution of resistance to these herbicides are discussed in light of new auxinic herbicide-resistant crops that will be commercialized in the near future.

The influence of environmental factors on germination and emergence of horseweed was examined in growth chamber experiments. Germination was highest (61%) under 24/20 C day/night temperature under light. Horseweed seed germination was observed under both light (13 h photoperiod) and complete darkness (24 h), but germination under continuous darkness was only 0 to 15% compared with 0 to 61% under light. All other experiments were conducted under 24/20 C and 13-h light conditions. Germination was 19 to 36% over a pH range from 4 to 10, with a trend toward higher germination under neutral-to-alkaline conditions. Horseweed germination was > 20% at < 40 mM NaCl concentration and lowest (4%) at 160 mM NaCl. These data suggest that even at high soil salinity conditions, horseweed can germinate. Germination of horseweed decreased from 25% to 2% as osmotic potential increased from 0 (distilled water) to −0.8 MPa, indicating that germination can still occur under moderate water stress conditions. Horseweed seedling emergence was at its maximum on the soil surface, and no seedlings emerged from seeds placed at a depth of 0.5 cm or higher.

Glyphosate is the world's most widely used herbicide. It is nonselective and has been used to control a broad range of weed species for the past 20 yr, without the appearance of resistant weed biotypes. However, a biotype of Lolium rigidum from a field in Northern Victoria, Australia, in which glyphosate had been used for the past 15 yr, failed to be controlled by label recommended rates. Based on LD50 values from pot dose-response experiments, this biotype exhibited resistance to glyphosate and was nearly 10-fold more resistant compared to the susceptible biotypes tested. The biotype was resistant to three different salts of glyphosate. The biotype was also nearly threefold more resistant to diclofop-methyl but was susceptible to other commonly used selective and broad-spectrum herbicides. Between the two-leaf and tillering stages of development, a susceptible biotype exhibited a small but significant decrease in tolerance to glyphosate, whereas tolerance of the resistant biotype remained unchanged with age. The resistant phenotype was verified in experiments in which seed was germinated in the presence of glyphosate. Observations on shoot and root growth of seedlings in these experiments suggested that the resistance mechanism might be associated more with the shoot than with the root.

Echinochloa oryzoides and E. phyllopogon have become the most serious weeds in California Oryza sativa since continuous flooding was used to suppress E. crus-galli. Continuous use of a limited number of available graminicides and an increasing number of control failures led to the investigation of herbicide resistance in E. oryzoides and E. phyllopogon. Greenhouse dose-response studies with postemergence (POST) applications of molinate, thiobencarb, fenoxaprop-ethyl, and bispyribac-sodium estimating GR50 (herbicide dose to inhibit growth by 50%) values suggested resistance to all herbicides in two E. phyllopogon accessions and to molinate and thiobencarb in one E. oryzoides accession when compared with susceptible E. phyllopogon and E. oryzoides controls, respectively. No resistance was detected in dose-response studies with propanil. Minimum and maximum ratios (R/S) of the GR50 values of resistant to susceptible E. phyllopogon plants (in two experiments involving two resistant accessions) were 7.8 and >13.3 for thiobencarb, 2.2 and 4.3 for molinate, 16.5 and 428.7 for fenoxaprop-ethyl, and 2.0 and 12.0 for bispyribac-sodium. Minimum and maximum E. oryzoides R/S ratios (average of two experiments) were 21.9 and 4.6 for thiobencarb and molinate, respectively. A resistant E. phyllopogon (one accession tested) and the susceptible control were killed by POST applications of glyphosate, glufosinate, and clomazone, and by a preemergence application of pendimethalin. Thus, the repeated use of the few available grass herbicides in the predominantly monocultured O. sativa of California has selected for herbicide resistance in E. oryzoides and E. phyllopogon. The introduction of herbicides with new mechanisms of action will be useful to manage herbicide-resistant E. oryzoides and E. phyllopogon. However, cross- and multiple resistance emphasize the need to integrate herbicide use with nonchemical means of weed management.

Artemisinin (qinghaosu), a sesquiterpenoid lactone peroxide constituent of annual wormwood (Artemisia annua L. # ARTAN) that is used as an antimalarial drug, was tested for phytotoxic properties. It inhibited germination of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and annual wormwood, and growth of roots and shoots of lettuce, redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L. # AMARE), pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L. # IPOLA), annual wormwood, and common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L. # POROL) was inhibited at 33 μM. No effects of 33 μM artemisinin were detected on growth of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik. # ABUTH) and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.]. Chlorophyll content was not affected in lettuce, and chlorosis was not observed in any species tested. The probable biosynthetic precursors of artemisinin, arteannuin B and qinghao acid, had no effect on growth or chlorophyll content of lettuce; however, they inhibited lettuce seed germination. Artemisinin and cinmethylin {exo-1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-2-[(2-methylphenyl)methoxy]-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] heptane} were equally effective in reducing growth of lettuce; however, cinmethylin had no effect on germination. Respiration of lettuce roots or cotyledons was not inhibited by artemisinin. Artemisinin only marginally increased the mitotic index of lettuce root tips at 33 μM. At the ultrastructural level, however, chromosomes were less condensed during mitosis in artemisinin-treated than control meristematic cells. The growth-inhibiting ability of artemisinin could not be reduced by feeding the plants with hydrolyzed protein or treatment with putrescine. Artemisinin is a selective phytotoxin that reduces growth by a mechanism other than mitotic disruption or inhibition of protein synthesis.

Interest in planting mixtures of cover crop species has grown in recent years as farmers seek to increase the breadth of ecosystem services cover crops provide. As part of a multidisciplinary project, we quantified the degree to which monocultures and mixtures of cover crops suppress weeds during the fall-to-spring cover crop growing period. Weed-suppressive cover crop stands can limit weed seed rain from summer- and winter-annual species, reducing weed population growth and ultimately weed pressure in future cash crop stands. We established monocultures and mixtures of two legumes (medium red clover and Austrian winter pea), two grasses (cereal rye and oats), and two brassicas (forage radish and canola) in a long fall growing window following winter wheat harvest and in a shorter window following silage corn harvest. In fall of the long window, grass cover crops and mixtures were the most weed suppressive, whereas legume cover crops were the least weed suppressive. All mixtures also effectively suppressed weeds. This was likely primarily due to the presence of fast-growing grass species, which were effective even when they were seeded at only 20% of their monoculture rate. In spring, weed biomass was low in all treatments due to winter kill of summer-annual weeds and low germination of winter annuals. In the short window following silage corn, biomass accumulation by cover crops and weeds in the fall was more than an order of magnitude lower than in the longer window. However, there was substantial weed seed production in the spring in all treatments not containing cereal rye (monoculture or mixture). Our results suggest that cover crop mixtures require only low seeding rates of aggressive grass species to provide weed suppression. This creates an opportunity for other species to deliver additional ecosystem services, though careful species selection may be required to maintain mixture diversity and avoid dominance of winter-hardy cover crop grasses in the spring.

Recent changes in technology, governmental regulation and scrutiny, and public opinion have motivated the agricultural community to examine current management practices from the perspective of how they fit into a sustainable agricultural framework. One aspect which can be incorporated into many existing farming systems is plant residue management (e.g., reduced tillage, cover crops). Many residue management systems are designed to enhance accumulation of plant residue at the soil surface. The plant residue covering the soil surface provides many benefits, including protection from soil erosion, soil moisture conservation by acting as a barrier against evaporation, improved soil tilth, and inhibition of weed emergence. This review summarizes recent literature (ca. last 25 yr) concerning the effects of plant residue management on the soil environment and how those changes impact herbicide interactions.

The intensification of crop management in the U.K. over the past 60 years has resulted in the decline of the populations of a number of annual plant species adapted to arable habitats. In contrast, other species continue to be common as arable weeds. A community assembly approach was taken to explain these recent changes in the weed flora using databases of plant functional traits, a pot experiment, and weed surveys of the Broadbalk long-term experiment. The hypothesis was tested that species that have been selected against by increased fertilizer inputs and herbicide use share an adverse combination of traits. An analysis comparing the combination of maximum height, seed weight, and time of first flowering of 29 common and 32 rare or threatened U.K. autumn weeds established that rare or threatened species occupied an area of trait space that was distinct from the common species. A rare weed trait syndrome of short stature, large seed, and late flowering was identified. The theory that species with a trait syndrome that is currently unfavorable are better adapted for less fertile environments was supported by the pot experiment. Species with a combination of short stature and large seed had a relatively greater competitive ability in low compared to high fertility treatments. Analysis of survey data from the Broadbalk long-term experiment confirmed that, as N inputs increased, the abundance of the two functional groups that contained only common species remained stable or increased; whereas, the groups dominated by rare or threatened species declined as fertility increased. An understanding of the response traits of arable plants to management filters, including fertilizer inputs and herbicide, is valuable for designing conservation strategies for rare species or predicting future shifts in the functional diversity of weed communities including the potential for invasive species to establish.

A physicochemical approach to understanding phloem transport of xenobiotics requires that similarities in transport processes in different plant species far outweigh any differences. There is now evidence that this is so, though additional factors such as rate of cuticular penetration, metabolism, and phytotoxicity may differ among plant species and thus may influence distribution patterns. Most herbicides that are translocated in phloem are weak acids, and their transport behavior can now be explained, at least in part, in terms of accumulation and retention in phloem. These processes can, in turn, be explained reasonably well by considering the polarity and acid strength of each compound. Specific carrier processes do not appear to be involved in the transport of most phloem-mobile herbicides. Phloem transport of herbicides has been assessed using the castor bean plant. For acids of pKa <4, intermediate lipophilicity is required for good phloem transport, while weaker acids of pKa >5 and nonionized compounds need to be more polar in order to move well.

Changes in the weed flora of cropping systems reflect the impacts of factors that create safe sites for weed establishment and facilitate the influx and losses to and from the soil seedbank. This analysis of the annual surveys of the Southern Weed Science Society documents changes in the weed flora of the 14 contiguous southern states since the advent of transgenic, herbicide-resistant crops. In 1994 and 2009, the top five weeds in corn were morningglories, Texas millet, broadleaf signalgrass, johnsongrass, and sicklepod; in this same period Palmer amaranth, smartweeds, and goosegrass had the greatest increases in importance in corn. In cotton, morningglories and nutsedges were among the top five most troublesome weeds in 1995 and 2009. Palmer amaranth, pigweeds, and Florida pusley were also among the five most troublesome species in 2009; the weeds with the largest increases in importance in cotton were common ragweed and two species with tolerance to glyphosate, Benghal dayflower and Florida pusley. In soybean, morningglories, nutsedges, and sicklepod were among the top five weed species in 1995 and 2009. Two species with glyphosate resistance, Palmer amaranth and horseweed, were the second and fourth most troublesome weeds of soybean in 2009. In wheat, the top four weeds in 2008 were the same as those in 1994 and included Italian ryegrass, wild garlic, wild radish, and henbit. Crop production in the southern region is a mosaic of various crop rotations, soil types, and types of tillage. During the interval between the surveys, the predominant change in weed management practices in the region and the nation was the onset and rapid dominance of the use of glyphosate in herbicide-resistant cultivars of corn, cotton, and soybean. Because of the correspondence between the effects of glyphosate on the respective weed species and the observed changes in the weed flora of the crops, it is likely the very broad use of glyphosate was a key component shaping the changes in weed flora. Only eight of the top 15 most troublesome weeds of cotton and soybean, the crops with the greatest use of glyphosate, were the same in 1995 and 2009. In contrast, in corn and wheat where adoption of glyphosate-resistant cultivars lags or is absent, 12 of the 15 most troublesome weeds were the same in 1994 and 2008. These findings show on a regional scale that weeds adapt to recurrent selection from herbicides, currently the predominant weed management tool. Future research should seek methods to hinder the rapid spread of herbicide-tolerant and evolution of herbicide-resistant weed species. As new tools are developed, research should focus on ways to preserve the efficacy of those tools through improved stewardship.

Sodium alginate was used to prepare pelletized formulations for each of five fungi. Aqueous mixtures of 1.0% (w/v) sodium alginate and homogenized mycelia of Alternaria cassiae Jurair & Khan, Alternaria macrospora Zimm., Fusarium lateritium Nees ex Fr., Colletotrichum malvarum (A. Braun & Casp.) Southworth, or a Phyllosticta sp. were pelletized by dropwise additions of each mycelial-alginate mixture into 0.25 M CaCl2. Abundant conidia were produced on the pellets 24 to 48 h after the pellets were spread into trays and exposed 10 min/12 h to 275-W sunlamps. These conidia germinated readily (90 to 100%) and readily infected the respective host plants. Each liter of mycelium plus growth medium from submerged liquid cultures produced 4 L of the mycelial-alginate mixture. Each liter of the mycelial-alginate mixture produced approximately 18 g of air-dried formulation. When 10% (w/v) clay was incorporated into the pellets, each liter of the mycelial-alginate mixture produced approximately 118 g of air-dried formulation. The pelletized fungi sporulated readily following storage at 4 or 25 C for 6 to 8 months. This method of pelletization is potentially useful for the formulation of inoculum of fungi used as mycoherbicides, for the mass production of pycnidium-forming fungi, and for the production of inoculum for host-plant resistance studies.

Seedbanks and seedling emergence of annual weeds were examined in arable fields at eight locations in the Corn Belt. Seed densities were estimated by direct seed extraction from each of several soil cores in each sampled plot. Average total seedbank densities ranged from 600 to 162 000 viable seed m-2 among locations. Coefficients of variation (CV) typically exceeded 50%. CV for seed densities of individual species usually exceeded 100%, indicating strongly aggregated distributions. CV were lower for species with dense seed populations than those with sparse seed populations. Variance of total seedbank densities was unstable when < 10 cores were examined per plot, but stabilized at all locations when ≥ 15 cores were analyzed, despite a 12-fold difference in plot size and 270-fold difference in seed density among locations. Percentage viable seed that emerged as seedlings in field plots ranged from < 1% for yellow rocket to 30% for giant foxtail. Redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters were the most frequently encountered species. Emergence percentages of these species were related inversely to rainfall or air temperatures in April or May, presumably because anoxia and/or high temperatures induced secondary dormancy in nondormant seed. From 50 to 90% of total seed in the seedbank were dead. This information can be employed by bioeconomic weed management models, which currently use coarse estimates of emergence percentages to customize recommendations for weed control.

The competitive effects of common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr.) on soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Lee 68′] were studied on Dundee silty clay loam soil from 1970 to 1972. Full-season competition by common cocklebur at 3,300, 6,600, 13,000, and 26,000 plants/ha reduced the 2-year average soybean seed yields 10, 28, 43, and 52%, respectively. Competition from common cocklebur at 100,000 plants/ha for 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 16 weeks after soybean emergence reduced soybean seed yields 10, 36, 40, 60, 80, and 80%, respectively. A reduction in soybean stand occurred after 12 or more weeks competition, and an increase in soybean plant height occurred after 10 or more weeks competition. When common cockleburs were removed during the first 4 weeks after soybean emergence, no further removal was required to obtain maximum soybean yield. Bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-(4)3H-one 2,2-dioxide] at 1.1 to 2.2 kg/ha applied over-the-top of common cockleburs and soybeans was as effective as hand removal in terminating competition provided common cocklebur plants were not flowering.

Three thousand accessions of the U.S. Dep. Agric. World Collection of Avena sp. germ plasm were screened for their ability to exude scopoletin (6-methoxy-7-hydroxy coumarin), a naturally occurring compound shown to have root growth inhibiting properties. Twenty-five accessions exuded more blue-fluorescing materials than a standard oat cultivar (Avena sativa L. ‘Garry’). Analysis of the exuded materials revealed that four accessions exuded up to three times as much scopoletin as ‘Garry’. When PI 266281 was grown with wild mustard [Brassica kaber (D.C.) L.C. Wheeler var. pinnatifida (Stokes) L.C. Wheeler] for 16 days in sand culture, the growth of the wild mustard was significantly less than that obtained when the weed was grown with ‘Garry’. Wild mustard plants grown in close association with PI 266281 exhibited severe chlorosis, stunting, and twisting which appeared indicative of chemical or allelopathic effects rather than simple competition. Analysis of the culture solution indicated that levels of scopoletin were too low to cause the observed effects and it is postulated that the final toxic effects were possibly due to the exudation of scopoletin and other allelopathic compounds.
