This review summarizes the astrophysical evidence for the existence of black holes provided by their gravitational influence on nearby matter. Two classes of accreting black holes have now been observationally verified: supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei, and stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries (XRBs). With the recent re-discovery of ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) sources, fresh evidence has also emerged for the existence of a third class of accreting black holes: intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). The properties of the three classes of accreting black holes are briefly discussed.

Gravitational lensing can magnify a distant source, revealing structural detail which is normally unresolvable. Recovering this detail through an inversion of the influence of gravitational lensing, however, requires optimisation of not only lens parameters, but also of the surface brightness distribution of the source. This paper outlines a new approach to this inversion, utilising genetic algorithms to reconstruct the source profile. In this initial study, the effects of image degradation due to instrumental and atmospheric effects are neglected and it is assumed that the lens model is accurately known, but the genetic algorithm approach can be incorporated into more general optimisation techniques, allowing the optimisation of both the parameters for a lensing model and the surface brightness of the source.

In this paper we present simulations of the extragalactic radio sky at 151, 325, and 1400 MHz based on number density predictions from models of the evolution of the radio luminosity function. From these simulations we predict typical source distributions, allowing us to estimate the natural confusion limit to faint flux density limits. The results are relevant to the science and design goals of future radio facilities, namely the Square Kilometre Array, the low-frequency array, and their demonstrator projects.

We present the proceedings from a two-day workshop held at Swinburne University on 2005 May 24–25. The workshop participants highlighted current Australian research on both theoretical and observational aspects of galaxy groups. These proceedings include short one-page summaries of a number of the talks presented at the workshop. The talks presented ranged from reconciling N-body simulations with observations, to the Hı content of galaxies in groups and the existence of ‘dark galaxies’. The formation and existence of ultra-compact dwarfs in groups, and a new supergroup in Eridanus were also discussed.

In this paper we discuss abundance ratios and their relation to stellar nucleosynthesis and other parameters of chemical evolution models, reviewing and clarifying the correct use of the observed abundance ratios in several astrophysical contexts. In particular, we start from the well-known fact that abundance ratios depend on stellar yields, initial mass function, and stellar lifetimes, and we show, by means of specific examples, that in some cases it is not correct to infer constraints on the contributions from different supernovae types (Ia, II), and particularly on different sets of yields, in the absence of a complete chemical evolution model taking into account stellar lifetimes. In spite of the fact that some of these results should be well known, we believe that it is useful to discuss the meaning of abundance ratios in the light of several recent claims based upon an incorrect interpretation of observed abundance ratios. In particular, the procedure, often used in the recent literature, of directly deriving conclusions about stellar nucleosynthesis just by relating abundance ratios to yield ratios implicitly assumes the instantaneous recycling approximation. This approximation is clearly not correct when one analyses the contributions of supernovae type Ia relative to supernovae type II as functions of cosmic time. In this paper we show that the uncertainty which arises from adopting this oversimplified procedure in a variety of astrophysical objects, such as elliptical galaxies, the intracluster medium, and high redshift objects, does not allow us to draw any firm conclusion, and that the differences between abundance ratios predicted by models with the instantaneous recycling approximation and models with detailed stellar lifetimes is of the same order as the differences between different sets of yields. On the other hand, if one is interested only in establishing the global metal production (e.g. galaxies plus intracluster medium) over the lifetime of the Universe, then the adoption of simplified arguments can be justified.

The cold, dry, and stable air above the summits of the Antarctic plateau provides the best ground-based observing conditions from optical to sub-millimetre wavelengths to be found on the Earth. Pathfinder for an International Large Optical Telescope (PILOT) is a proposed 2 m telescope, to be built at Dome C in Antarctica, able to exploit these conditions for conducting astronomy at optical and infrared wavelengths. While PILOT is intended as a pathfinder towards the construction of future grand-design facilities, it will also be able to undertake a range of fundamental science investigations in its own right. This paper provides the performance specifications for PILOT, including its instrumentation. It then describes the kinds of projects that it could best conduct. These range from planetary science to the search for other solar systems, from star formation within the Galaxy to the star formation history of the Universe, and from gravitational lensing caused by exo-planets to that produced by the cosmic web of dark matter. PILOT would be particularly powerful for wide-field imaging at infrared wavelengths, achieving near diffraction-limited performance with simple tip–tilt wavefront correction. PILOT would also be capable of near diffraction-limited performance in the optical wavebands, as well be able to open new wavebands for regular ground-based observation, in the mid-IR from 17 to 40 μm and in the sub-millimetre at 200 μm.

Filaments of galaxies are the dominant feature of modern large-scale redshift surveys. They can account for up to perhaps half of the baryonic mass budget of the Universe and their distribution and abundance can help constrain cosmological models. However, there remains no single, definitive way in which to detect, describe, and define what filaments are and their extent. This work examines a number of physically motivated, as well as statistical, methods that can be used to define filaments and examines their relative merits.

There are three distinct types of ‘coherent emission’ in astrophysical plasmas: plasma emission (e.g. in solar radio bursts), electron cyclotron maser emission (e.g. in Jupiter's radio bursts), and pulsar radio emission. The development and current status of our understanding of coherent emission is reviewed, concentrating on plasma emission and electron cyclotron maser emission for which there is direct information on the distributions of electrons that produce the radiation. A generic model for a coherent emission process involves a maser generating radiation in a natural mode of the ambient plasma, and operating near marginal stability. A specific coherent emission mechanism involves the form of free energy to drive the maser, a pump that provides the free energy, and the plasma instability that leads to wave growth. The nature of coherence and its measurement through higher order intensity correlations are discussed.

Compton scattering in the bulk accretion flow of the accretion column in magnetic cataclysmic variables can significantly shift photon energies in the X-ray emission lines resulting from accretion shocks. In particular, Compton recoil can potentially broaden the 6.7 and 6.97 keV Fe Kα emission lines produced in the post-shock region, and contaminate the fluorescent 6.4 keV neutral Fe Kα line reflected off the white dwarf surface. We present nonlinear Monte Carlo simulations demonstrating these effects, and we discuss the interpretation of observed Fe Kα linewidths in magnetic cataclysmic variables in light of these new results. The implications for other accreting compact objects are also discussed.

We investigate the role of asymmetries in the line spread function of the 2-degree field (2dF) spectrograph and the variations in these asymmetries with the CCD, the plate, the time of observation, and the fibre. A data-reduction pipeline is developed that takes these deformations into account for the calibration and cross-correlation of the spectra. We show that, using the emission lines of calibration lamp observations, we can fit the line spread function with the sum of two Gaussian functions representing the theoretical signal and a perturbation of the system. This model is then used to calibrate the spectra and generate templates by downgrading high-resolution spectra. Thus, we can cross-correlate the observed spectra with templates degraded in the same way. Our reduction pipeline is tested on real observations and provides a significant improvement in the accuracy of the radial velocities obtained. In particular, the systematic errors that were as high as ∼20 km s−1 when applying the AAO reduction package 2DFDR are now reduced to ∼5 km s−1. Even though the 2dF spectrograph is to be decommissioned at the end of 2005, the analysis of archival data and previous studies could be improved by the reduction procedure we propose here.

We study the contents of an apparent void in the distribution of Lyα emitting galaxies at redshift 2.38. We show that this void is not empty, but contains a damped Lyα absorption-line system, seen in absorption against background QSO 2138-4427. Imaging does not reveal any galaxy associated with this absorption-line system, but it contains metals (Fe/H ∼ −1.3), and its large velocity range (∼180 km s−1) implies a significant mass.

A test of a new Bayesian approach to solar flare prediction is presented. The approach uses the past history of flaring together with phenomenological rules of flare statistics to make a prediction for the probability of occurrence of a large flare within an interval of time, or to refine an initial prediction (which may incorporate other information). The test of the method is based on data from the Geostationary Observational Environmental Satellites, and involves whole-Sun prediction of soft X-ray flares for 1976–2003. The results show that the method somewhat over-predicts the probability of all events above a moderate size, but performs well in predicting large events.

We present data characterising the performance of the Mopra Radio Telescope during the period 2000–2004, including measurements of the beam size and shape, as well as the overall beam efficiency of the telescope. In 2004 the full width half maximum of the beam was measured to be 36 ± 3″ at 86 GHz, falling to 33 ± 2″ at 115 GHz. Based on our observations of Jupiter we measured the beam efficiency of the Gaussian main beam to be 0.49 ± 0.03 at 86 GHz and 0.42 ± 0.02 at 115 GHz. Sources with angular sizes of ∼80″ couple well to the main beam, while sources with angular sizes between ∼80″ and ∼160″ couple to the both the main beam and inner error beam. Measurements indicate that the inner error beam contains approximately one-third the power of the main beam. We also compare efficiency corrected spectra to measurements made at similar facilities and present standard spectra taken towards the molecular clouds Orion-KL and M17-SW.

To maximise data output from single-shot astronomical images, the rejection of cosmic rays is important. We present the results of a benchmark trial comparing various cosmic ray rejection algorithms. The procedures assess relative performances and characteristics of the processes in cosmic ray detection, rates of false detections of true objects, and the quality of image cleaning and reconstruction. The cosmic ray rejection algorithms developed by Rhoads (2000, PASP, 112, 703), van Dokkum (2001, PASP, 113, 1420), Pych (2004, PASP, 116, 148), and the IRAF task XZAP by Dickinson are tested using both simulated and real data. It is found that detection efficiency is independent of the density of cosmic rays in an image, being more strongly affected by the density of real objects in the field. As expected, spurious detections and alterations to real data in the cleaning process are also significantly increased by high object densities. We find the Rhoads' linear filtering method to produce the best performance in the detection of cosmic ray events; however, the popular van Dokkum algorithm exhibits the highest overall performance in terms of detection and cleaning.

Pulsars may be born with a short rotation period of milliseconds with the magnetic field amplified through dynamo processes up to ∼1015–1016 G. Such millisecond magnetars spin down rapidly, emitting bursts of high-energy neutrinos and gamma rays. Specifically, acceleration of ions in both the polar gap (as in a normal pulsar) and the relativistic magnetar wind is considered. In both cases ions can be accelerated to ultra-high energies and these energetic ions can lead to production of high-energy neutrinos and gamma rays through interaction with thermal radiation from the hot neutron star or the heated inner boundary region of the stellar envelope as the result of the deposition of energy by the magnetar wind. The detectability of the neutrino flux by a kilometre-scale neutrino detector such as the planned IceCube neutrino observatory is discussed.

The efficiency with which a charge-coupled device (CCD) detects photons depends, amongst other factors, on where within a pixel the photon hits. To explore this effect we have made detailed scans across a pixel for a front-illuminated three-phase EEV05-20 CCD using the standard astronomical B, V, R, and I colour filters. Pixel response functions and photometric sensitivity maps are derived from the scan images. Nonlinear charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) effects were observed and corrected for. The resulting images clearly show the intra-pixel sensitivity variations (IPSVs) due to the CCD electrode structure, and its dependence on wavelength. We briefly comment on the implications of IPSVs and CTI for high-precision photometry and astrometry.

In the search for tidal structure in Galactic satellite systems, we have conducted a photometric survey over a 10 deg2 area centred on the Fornax dSph galaxy. The survey was made in two colours, and the resulting colour–magnitude data were used as a mask to select candidate Fornax RGB stars, thereby increasing the contrast of Fornax stars to background sources in the outer regions. Previously, we reported the presence of a shell (age 2 Gyr) located towards the centre of Fornax. In this contribution we reveal a second shell, significantly larger than the first, located 1.3° north-west from the centre of Fornax, outside the nominal tidal radius. Moreover, the distribution of Fornax RGB stars reveals two lobes extending to the spatial limit of our survey, and aligned with the minor axis and with the two shells. These results support the hypothesis of a merger between Fornax and a gas-rich companion approximately 2 Gyr ago.

If the voids that we see today in the distribution of galaxies existed at recombination, they will leave an imprint on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). On the other hand, if these voids formed much later, their effect on the CMB will be negligible and will not be observed with the current generation of experiments. In this paper, presented at the 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia, we discuss our ongoing investigations into voids of primordial origin. We show that if voids in the cold dark matter distribution existed at the epoch of decoupling, they could contribute significantly to the apparent rise in CMB power on small scales detected by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) Deep Field. Here we present our improved method for predicting the effects of primordial voids on the CMB in which we treat a void as an external source in the cold dark matter (CDM) distribution employing a Boltzmann solver. Our improved predictions include the effects of a cosmological constant (Λ) and acoustic oscillations generated by voids at early times. We find that models with relatively large voids on the last scattering surface predict too much CMB power in an Einstein–de Sitter background cosmology but could be consistent with the current CMB observations in a ΛCDM universe.
