Leishmaniasis is a set of clinically distinct infectious diseases caused by Leishmania, a genus of flagellated protozoan parasites, that affects ∼12 million people worldwide, with ∼2 million new infections annually. Plants are known to produce substances to defend themselves against pathogens and predators. In the genus Lycopersicon, which includes the tomato, L. esculentum, the main antimicrobial compound is the steroidal glycoalkaloid α-tomatine. The loss of the saccharide side-chain of tomatine yields the aglycone tomatidine. In the present study, we investigated the effects of tomatidine on the growth, mitochondrial membrane potential, sterol metabolism, and ultrastructure of Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes. Tomatidine (0·1 to 5 μM) inhibited parasite growth in a dose-dependent manner (IC50=124±59 nM). Transmission electron microscopy revealed lesions in the mitochondrial ultrastructure and the presence of large vacuoles and lipid storage bodies in the cytoplasm. These structural changes in the mitochondria were accompanied by an effective loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and a decrease in ATP levels. An analysis of the neutral lipid content revealed a large depletion of endogenous 24-alkylated sterols such as 24-methylene-cholesta-5, 7-dien-3β-ol (5-dehydroepisterol), with a concomitant accumulation of cholesta-8, 24-dien-3β-ol (zymosterol), which implied a perturbation in the cellular lipid content. These results are consistent with an inhibition of 24-sterol methyltransferase, an important enzyme responsible for the methylation of sterols at the 24 position, which is an essential step in the production of ergosterol and other 24-methyl sterols.

Previously it has been shown that eggs of the skin-parasitic monogenean Entobdella soleae, maintained free of host contamination at constant temperature (12 °C) and exposed to alternating 12 h periods of light and darkness, hatch during the first few hours of each period of illumination as a result of endogenous processes in the larva in conjunction with the illumination cycle. Washings, prepared by immersing the parasite's host (the common sole, Solea solea) for 1 h in seawater (just sufficient to cover the body), enhance this ‘morning’ hatching. Furthermore, the application of host washings during the latter half of the period of illumination or during the dark period also stimulates hatching. Experiments have shown that the hatching factor is present in sole skin mucus, is not destroyed by boiling for 5 min or by freezing and is produced by small soles measuring 4–5 cm in length as well as by larger soles (15–21 cm long).

When eggs are incubated at about 12°C in the absence of fish washings, hatching begins about 30 days after laying, but there is evidence that some of the larvae inside their shells are fully developed and capable of hatching in response to host hatching factor 1–3 days earlier.

When fish washings are added to eggs which range in age from 25 to more than 30 days (at 12 °C) many eggs are stimulated to hatch (in addition to ‘morning’ hatching as a result of endogenous rhythmical processes and the illumination cycle) and others fail to hatch. These remaining unhatched eggs, in the absence of further treatment with host hatching factor, will complete their development and subsequently will hatch during the ‘morning’ hours in response to the illumination cycle. Further contact with host hatching factor is likely to stimulate the hatching of some of these remaining eggs.

The host hatching factor is not specific to S. solea; washings from plaice, dab, halibut, whiting and ray induce hatching in E. soleae. In experiments in which oncomiracidia were offered scales from dab and sole, most of the attached larvae were found on sole skin, irrespective of whether the hatching stimulant had been provided by dab or by sole.

The relationship between the behaviour of the common sole and hatching phenomena in the skin parasite is discussed; hatching rhythms and the use of host hatching factors adapt the parasite to take advantage of most opportunities to infect the host.

The number of episodes of diseases caused by bacterial contamination of food has shown a real increase by about threefold in the last decade in the U.K. The numbers for 1992 are estimated to be 2 million. The causes are multifactorial and complex, and 4 representative pathogens are reviewed. The main increase in diseases due to salmonella has been caused by Salmonella enteritidis, especially from eggs. The commonest bacterial food pathogen is Campylobacter, which causes an illness with specific season peaks in May and June. This may be related to the activities of birds and mammals. Both these bacteria cause common diseases that are rarely fatal. In contrast, Listeria and E. coli are ubiquitous but rarely produce disease; however, the consequences of any such illness are often dire. Procedures and techniques are available for the control of most of these diseases, but society does not seem determined to implement them.

Stochastic processes play a vital role in the early stages of the evolution of drug-resistant malaria. We present a simple and flexible method for investigating these processes and understanding how they affect the emergence of drug-resistant malaria. Qualitatively different predictions can be made depending on the biological and epidemiological factors which prevail in the field. Intense intra-host competition between co-infecting clones, low numbers of genes required to encode resistance, and high drug usage all encourage the emergence of drug resistance. Drug-resistant forms present at the time drug application starts are less likely to survive than those which arise subsequently; survival of the former largely depends on how rapidly malaria population size stabilizes after drug application. In particular, whether resistance is more likely to emerge in areas of high or low transmission depends on malaria intra-host dynamics, the level of drug usage, the population regulation of malaria, and the number of genes required to encode resistance. These factors are discussed in relation to the practical implementation of drug control programmes.

A total of 41 ticks were collected from 15 quokkas on Bald Island and 2 ticks from a Gilbert's potoroo from Two Peoples Bay. Three species of Ixodid ticks Ixodes australiensis, Ixodes hirsti and Ixodes myrmecobii were identified on the quokkas known to have a high prevalence of Trypanosoma copemani. Tick faeces from ticks isolated from 8 individual quokkas and a Gilbert's potoroo were examined with one identified as positive for trypanosomes. Faecal examination revealed trypanosomes similar to in vitro life-cycle stages of T. copemani. In total 12 ticks were dissected and trypanosomes found in sections of their midgut and haemolymph, 49 and 117 days after collection. Tick faeces, salivary glands and midguts from I. australiensis were screened using an 18S rRNA PCR with amplification seen only from the midguts. Sequencing showed 100% homology to T. copemani (genotype A) and 99·9% homology to the wombat (AII) isolate of T. copemani. Trypanosomes were only detected in I. australiensis as neither I. hirsti nor I. myrmecobii survived the initial 30-day storage conditions. We therefore identify a vector for T. copemani as I. australiensis and, given the detection of trypanosomes in the faeces, suggest that transmission is via the faecal-oral route.

Engorged Ixodes ricinus nymphs collected from sheep resident in an upland UK field site were significantly lighter than nymphs that engorged on previously tick-naïve sheep, indicating that site-resident sheep continually exposed to ticks acquired anti-tick resistance. The weights of engorged nymphs that fed on naturally tick-resistant sheep increased significantly, however, when increasingly high numbers of adult female ticks fed on the sheep during seasonal peaks of tick activity. This relationship was unaffected by variations in nymph weight amongst individual sheep, between seasons and years, and potential effects of sheep infection with Ehrlichia phagocytophila; this suggests that high adult tick infestations may directly inhibit the expression of acquired anti-tick resistance by sheep. The length, width and weight of adult ticks and the scutum length of adult females were linearly related to their weight as an engorged nymph. The mean scutum length of adult female ticks feeding on sheep in the field site was greater than that of adult females obtained from engorged nymphs collected from sheep of the same site. This suggests that larger ticks have a survival advantage and that I. ricinus ticks exhibit density-dependent intraspecific facilitation at high infestation levels with potential consequences for the transmission of tick-borne diseases.

The encapsulation of Trichinella spiralis larvae in host striated muscle was studied.

Capsule formation starts at 13 days post-infection. Between days 20–50 p.i. the largest increase in capsule formation was observed. The capsule is exclusively, or almost exclusively, formed from and by the infected muscle fibre, as might be concluded from the presence of the sarcolemmal basal lamina surrounding the capsule substance during the initial stages of capsule formation. A collagen nature of the capsule cannot be excluded.

Sequences of the first internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) and the D1-D3 domains of the large subunit (LSU) of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were determined for multiple specimens of 4 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of the monogenean, Pseudorhabdosynochus lantauensis. OTUs were defined based on their collecting localities, host and/or morphological characteristics. All P. lantauensis specimens of one group (OTUs 1 and 3) differed in their sequences of the ITS-1 and partial LSU rDNA when compared with specimens of a second group (OTUs 2 and 4) by 12% and 2%, respectively. Results of the phylogenetic analyses of the LSU rDNA sequence data showed total (100%) bootstrap support for the separation of P. lantauensis into 2 distinct clades. At least 11 of the 18 nucleotide differences in the LSU sequence between the two P. lantauensis clades were derived (i.e. autapomorphic) characters when the morphologically distinct species, P. epinepheli and P. coioidesis, were used as outgroups. Furthermore, there were several autapomorphic character states for each P. lantauensis clade. This provides sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis that P. lantauensis represents a single species. Morphological and morphometric differences between these two clades provided additional strong support for the separation of P. lantauensis into two species. These two parasite species were found to co-exist on one of the two species of serranid fish (i.e. Epinephelus coioides) examined in the South China Sea (Guangdong Province, China).

Tsetse flies were infected with 5 different variable antigen types (VATs) or with a mixture of VATs of the AnTAR 1 serodeme of Trypanosoma brucei. Metacyclic forms from the salivary glands of infected flies were used to initiate infections in mice. Immunofluorescence and trypanolysis reactions employing 24 monospecific antisera were used to analyse the VATs present in the mice following cyclical transmission. Regardless of the VAT used to infect tsetse flies, the first VATs detectable in the bloodstream were those previously identified as metacyclic VATs (M-VATs). These were present until at least 5 days after infection, at which time lytic antibodies against at least 2 of the M-VATs were detectable in the blood of infected mice. In mice immunosuppressed by X-irradiation the M-VATs were detectable in the bloodstream for longer periods, but the percentage of the population labelled with anti-metacyclic sera showed a decrease on day 5 as in non-irradiated animals. The VAT ingested by the tsetse was always detectable early during the first parasitaemia following cyclical transmission and was usually the first VAT detected after the M-VATs. Neutralization of selected M-VATs before infecting mice resulted in elimination of the neutralized M-VAT from the first parasitaemia but had no effect on the expression of other VATs in the early infection.

1. An account is given of the development of strains of Trypanosom gambiense in Glossina tachinoides.

Complete development with infection of salivary glands and hypopharynx occupies from 12 to 40 days and upwards, according to the strain of trypanosome used and the temperature conditions during development.

2. It is shown that the first or intestinal phase of development is passed within the extra-peritrophic space and that the lumen or intra-peritrophic space of the gut is not involved.

3. The importance of the proventricular infection as an index of maturing infections is stressed, and it is shown that filamentar crithidia are always present in this organ in the later stages of infection when infection of salivary glands is taking place. It has been proved that these filamentar crithidia may constitute up to 20 per cent. of flagellates in the proventriculus and are partly responsible for the further migration to the salivary glands.

4. An account is given of the infectivity to G. tachinoides of twenty-six strains of T. gambiense from epidemic and endemic sleeping sickness areas in Northern Nigeria. None of the twenty-six was proved to be non-transmissible and twenty-five of the strains gave Total Infectivity Rates in the tsetse of from 0·9–10·5, the Cyclical Developmental Rates ranging from 0·6–9·8.

5. No evidence has been obtained that strains of T. gambiense from chronic cases of human trypanosomiasis in endemic areas are less transmissible by tsetse than strains originating in epidemic areas.

6. An account is given of experiments in which G. tachinoides infected with T. gambiense were exposed to 37° C. for varying lengths of time. The effect of high temperature during the infecting period is seen in a marked and constant increase in the proportion of tsetse infected. In the case of one strain a total infection rate of 77·8 per cent. was obtained with true cyclical development in 73·5 per cent. of the tsetse used.

7. It is suggested that the temperatures at which experimental tsetse are infected in the laboratory with T. gambiense are excessively low, and an investigation is to be made into the optimum climatic conditions for development of the trypanosome in the fly with a parallel attempt to correlate this with the climatic conditions under which wild tsetse become infected in nature.

Physical habitat structure can influence the distribution and abundance of organisms. In rivers, stream drift, a common process originating from the unidirectional water flow, favours the displacement and downstream dispersion of invertebrates. This process could also generate a gradient in infection levels, leading to decreasing numbers of parasites per host as one moves upstream from the river mouth. We tested this hypothesis using 4 trematode species infecting the fish Gobiomorphus breviceps in the Manuherikia River (New Zealand). We analysed the abundance of each trematode infrapopulation as a function of distance from the river junction and fish size by generalized linear models. Our results supported the existence of a longitudinal gradient in trematode abundance along the river with a decreasing downstream-to-upstream continuum. This applied to 3 out of the 4 trematode species studied, suggesting that this might be a common pattern in river populations. Thus, the unidirectional river flow and a major process like drift in lotic systems, that influences the dynamics and distribution of invertebrate hosts, can also affect trematodes. Host properties like habitat preference, and parasite traits, particularly those related to transmission mode can influence the strength of the observed gradient, as may other environmental and biotic factors.

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is prevalent worldwide and can infect a remarkably wide range of hosts despite felids being the only definitive host. As cats play a major role in transmission to secondary mammalian hosts, the interaction between cats and these hosts should be a major factor determining final prevalence in the secondary host. This study investigates the prevalence of T. gondii in a natural population of Apodemus sylvaticus collected from an area with low cat density (<2·5 cats/km2). A surprisingly high prevalence of 40·78% (95% CI: 34·07%–47·79%) was observed despite this. A comparable level of prevalence was observed in a previously published study using the same approaches where a prevalence of 59% (95% CI: 50·13%–67·87%) was observed in a natural population of Mus domesticus from an area with high cat density (>500 cats/km2). Detection of infected foetuses from pregnant dams in both populations suggests that congenital transmission may enable persistence of infection in the absence of cats. The prevalences of the related parasite, Neospora caninum were found to be low in both populations (A. sylvaticus: 3·39% (95% CI: 0·12%–6·66%); M. domesticus: 3·08% (95% CI: 0·11%–6·05%)). These results suggest that cat density may have a lower than expected effect on final prevalence in these ecosystems.

Genetic influences upon host variation in eosinophilia and resistance to helminth infection, and the relationship between these parameters, were investigated in 7 inbred and 1 hybrid strains of mice infected with Trichinella spiralis. Clear strain-dependent variations were observed in the maximum peripheral blood, bone marrow and spleen eosinophilia attained in infected animals. SWR, NIH and SJL strains of mice all gave high responses to infection; four congenic strains sharing the B10 background (C57BL10 [B10], B10.S, B10.G and B10.BR) were low responders. Some of the genes for high responsiveness appeared to be dominant, as F1 hybrids from high- and low-response phenotype parental strains showed intermediate to high responses to infection. Intestinal eosinophilia showed no correlation with either peripheral blood or bone marrow responses (NIH and B10 strains having similar levels of eosinophil response in gut tissue) and was unrelated to the level of resistance to infection. Whereas NIH were highly resistant, with adult worm burdens at 13 days post-infection and muscle larval burdens at 35 days post-infection significantly lower than all other strains, B10 were quite susceptible, retaining substantial worm burdens at day 13 and harbouring large numbers of muscle larvae. Measurements of the level of the eosinophilopoietic cytokine IL-5 in sera during infection showed that the two strains differed in the kinetics of release but not in their absolute capacity to produce this cytokine. NIH mice released high levels during a primary infection, B10 released high levels during a secondary infection. The relationship between eosinophilia and resistance and the differences seen between responses in different body compartments are discussed in terms of genetically determined influences operating at the levels of T helper cell populations, T cell cytokines and bone-marrow precursor cell populations.

1. Oviposition by L. sericata has been induced on a moist clipped fleece by incorporating ammonium carbonate and indole, hence attraction is not completely dependent on some factor produced by the living animal.

2. Chemistry of attractants. A new method for determining small amounts of hydrogen sulphide is described. Larval excreta contains hydrogen sulphide but no indole or skatole. Following incubation the ammonia and sulphydryl contents of various natural attractants are markedly increased.

3. Field trials on sheep. 0·002% ethyl mercaptan in conjunction with 0·1% ammonium carbonate was able to induce oviposition by L. sericata. The mercaptan concentration could be reduced to 0·001%, providing 0·0001% hydrogen sulphide was present. 0·01% mercaptan and aqueous solutions of hydrogen sulphide alone are not attractive.

4. The results obtained support the hypothesis that attraction is the result of the breakdown of cystine, with the production of sulphur compounds, coupled with the presence of ammonium carbonate (or of some putrefactive material).

5. Chemical baits. During the period 17 August–21 September 1943, various combinations of ammonium carbonate, hydrogen sulphide and indole in conjunction with sheep wool proved to be attractants for females of L. caesar.

The immune response of European sea bass after intracaelomic immunization with Sphaerospora dicentrarchi was studied. Fish were injected with S. dicentrarchi spores (DIC), with spores plus adjuvant (DIC+FCA), with adjuvant alone (FCA) or with PBS. Several parameters of the immune response were measured. Serum lysozyme increased significantly in DIC fish 1 week after immunization (p.i.) and it remained significantly higher in DIC+FCA fish 4 weeks p.i., and in DIC fish 8 weeks p.i. than in PBS-injected fish. The number of nitroblue tetrazolium-positive blood cells was significantly higher in DIC+FCA fish 1, 4 and 8 weeks p.i, but the highest values were detected 1 week p.i. The highest stimulation index was detected in phagocytes from DIC+FCA fish. The number of S. dicentrarchi antibody-secreting cells was significantly higher in DIC+FCA fish than in DIC fish. Serum from DIC and DIC+FCA fish, stained the polar capsules and the valves of S. dicentrarchi spores in immunohistochemistry. Serum antibodies could not be detected using immunoblot assay. All these results show that immunization with S. dicentrarchi resulted in the activation of the non-specific immune response, mainly 7 days p.i. A specific humoral response against the parasite was also demonstrated but it had a low magnitude.

Populations of Schofield strain, random-bred mice were shown to have a bimodal variation in ability to bring about immune expulsion of the nematode Trichuris muris. This variation was genetically determined and independent of the size of infection experienced. The proportion of mice unable to achieve worm expulsion (non-responders) was relatively constant in various populations of the strain but was increased by selective breeding from mice of known status. Crosses made between non-responder and responder mice produced progeny that were almost all (92%) of responder phenotype, showing that the ability to achieve worm expulsion was inherited as a dominant characteristic. It is suggested that the genetic control involves a small number of genes; the possible immunological mechanisms by which control is mediated are briefly discussed.

1. It is shown that Ornithomyia avicularia L. (Diptera, Hippoboscidae) is a vector of Trypanosoma avium in this country.

2. The metacyclic trypanosomes develop in the insect's hind-gut, and infect birds by penetrating the membranes of buccal cavity and/or oesophagus and crop.

3. The opportunity for infection to take place occurs when birds ingest infected insects.

4. The significance of this finding in connexion with other reports of (a) vectors of avian trypanosomes, and (b) trypanosomes transmitted by hippoboscids, is discussed.

5. Attempts to obtain development of T. avium in a few nymphs of Rhodnius prolixus and one adult Culex molestus, failed. Mites from an infected bird were examined for the presence of flagellates, with negative results.

The protonephridium of platyhelminths including Schistosoma mansoni plays a pivotal role in their survival by excretion of metabolic wastes as well as xenobiotics, and can be revealed in the living adult parasite by certain fluorescent compounds which are concentrated in excretory tubules and collecting ducts. To determine the presence of the multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) as a possible transporter in protonephridial epithelium, adult schistosomes were exposed to a fluorescent Ca2+ indicator, fluo-3 acetyloxymethyl ester, which is a potential substrate of mammalian MRP. Specific fluorescence related to fluo-3/Ca2+ chelate delineated the whole length of the protonephridial system. Simultaneously, a fluorescent substance was accumulated in the posterior part of collecting ducts and the excretory bladder. Similarly, when other fluorogenic substrates for mammalian MRP such as monoclorobimane, fluorescein diacetate, and 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate were applied to adult schistosomes, these fluorescent markers were observed in the excretory tubules through to the excretory bladder. The excretory system of mechanically-transformed schistosomula was not labelled with any of these 4 fluorescent markers. These findings suggest that the protonephridial epithelium of adult schistosomes, but not schistosomula, might express the homologue of the mammalian MRP transporting organic anionic conjugates with glutathione, glucuronate or sulphate as well as unconjugated amphiphilic organic anions.

We assessed the distribution of Trypanosoma cruzi Discrete Typing Units (DTUs) in domestic and peridomestic Triatoma infestans and Triatoma sordida specimens collected in a well-defined rural area in Pampa del Indio, northeastern Argentina. Microscopically-positive bugs were randomly selected with a multi-level sampling design, and DTUs were identified using direct PCR strategies. TcVI predominated in 61% of 69 T. infestans and in 56% of 9 T. sordida. TcV was the secondary DTU in T. infestans (16%) and was found in 1 T. sordida specimen (11%). Three T. sordida (33%) were found infected with TcI, a DTU also identified in local Didelphis albiventris opossums. Mixed DTU infections occurred rarely (5%) and were detected both directly from the bugs' rectal ampoule and parasite cultures. The identified DTUs and bug collection sites of T. infestans were significantly associated. Bugs infected with TcV were almost exclusively captured in domiciles whereas those with TcVI were found similarly in domiciles and peridomiciles. All mixed infections occurred in domiciles. TcV-infected bugs fed more often on humans than on dogs, whereas TcVI-infected bugs showed the reverse pattern. T. sordida is a probable sylvatic vector of TcI linked to D. albiventris, and could represent a secondary vector of TcVI and TcV in the domestic/peridomestic cycle.

Of the unicellular eukaryotes, formerly Protozoa, now considered to belong to five separate phyla, only the neogregarines and microsporidia are serious contenders for a role in biological control of invertebrate pests. Ciliates of the genus Lambornella, which penetrate their hosts via cuticular cysts, have potential in mosquito control but have not been investigated in depth.

‘Protozoa’ generally kill their hosts by overwhelming numbers, destroying the normal function of organs or depleting the host of essential reserves. Because they are slow-acting pathogens they cannot be used on their own when pests have already reached a high level of abundance nor can they be relied upon when the damage threshold of pests is low. Their principal use will be as the slow-acting component of a 2-pathogen or pathogen-plus-chemical formulation, which can be used when a degree of damage is tolerable.

A comparison is made between two microsporidia in lepidopteran hosts, Vairimorpha necatrix and Nosema pyrausta. The former causes high mortality in a wide range of hosts, when bacterial septicaemia ensues after disruption of the gut wall by the microsporidian invasion process. Some larvae may survive this period and live to damage crops, but none survives to adulthood. There is no transovarial transmission and the parasite is rarely found in natural populations. V. necatrix could be used as a microbial pesticide for short-term control. N. pyrausta is restricted to a single host, the European corn borer. It has low pathogenicity, causing some larval mortality especially under conditions of environmental stress. Most hosts survive to adults but show reduced longevity and fecundity. The parasite is transmitted transovarially and is highly prevalent in the field. It is not considered pathogenic enough to be used as a microbial pesticide but is an important factor in regulating natural populations. These examples illustrate the inverse relationship between pathogenicity and prevalence and show how cycles of host population abundance may be driven by pathogens of moderate to low pathogenicity.

Two kinds of transovarial transmission mechanisms are discussed. With the microsporidia of winter moth, vegetative stages and spores, even when abundant in egg yolk, do not gain access to larval tissues but are confined to the meconium in larvae just before eclosion. Larvae are not infected when they hatch but the spores are carried over in the eggs to the next period of larval feeding activity. In contrast, some genera of microsporidia in haematophagous diptera, e.g. Amblysopora in mosquitoes, actually infect the cells of developing larvae, which are already infected when they hatch.

The prospects for biological control with ‘Protozoa’ are reviewed for vectors of medical importance and for pests of pasture, field crops, forests and stored products. Particular attention is given to the use of microsporidia in combination with low concentrations of compatible chemical insecticides and with other pathogens (e.g. viruses).

Spores for field application can be produced in natural or experimental hosts by feeding or intrahaemocoelic inoculation. Yields vary according to the species of parasite and host. Examples are Nosema locustae in Melanoplus bivittatus yielding 3·9 × 109 spores/grasshopper enough to treat more than 1 hectare of rangeland, and Vairimorpha necatrix in Heliothis zea, yielding 1·67 × 109 spores per larva, with 2·5 × 1012 spores/hectare required for field application. In vitro culture is at present a laboratory tool only, with yields too low for economic returns.

Spores can be stored, according to species, dry or in distilled water with antibiotics at 4 °C. This gives good survival for months or years. In field applications feeding-bait formulations are more efficacious than sprays because they concentrate the spores for uptake by the target species and give the spores some protection from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Pheromone lures have been used for the introduction of spores by males into pest infestations in stored grain. Males are lured to sites dusted with spores and return to the grain after removal of the lure, to contaminate females and larvae. The use of these lures, first as traps to monitor pest population increases, then to effect a controlled pest growth curve by introduction of pathogens, is an attractive innovation. Protozoa are considered safe for field application on the limited evidence available.
