Cet article prsente une application de la recherche de forme aux gilets de sauvetagegonflables. La recherche de forme est le nom gnrique dsignant le processus de conceptionde la forme globale des structures lgres instables telles que les structures gonflables.L’tat d’quilibre statique des gilets gonflables est recherch pour analyser leur forme, levolume contenu et la localisation des zones de plis. La mthode de relaxation dynamiqueavec amortissement cintique permet d’viter le problme de singularit de la matrice deraideur et le problme d’instabilit locale dans les zones de plis. Sa rapidit deconvergence est trs dpendante de la formulation de la matrice des masses. Dans cetarticle, plusieurs expressions des masses sont testes et leurs performances compares entreelles sur un cas de gilet de sauvetage gonflable.

Les prothèses de hanche en biocéramique sont résistantes à l'usure mais, du fait de leur fragilité intrinsèque, sont susceptibles de se rompre. Le phénomène de décoaptation, séparation de faible amplitude de la tête et de la cupule, a été mis en évidence lors de la marche, et le choc mécanique en résultant peut fortement augmenter les risques de rupture. Un modèle par éléments-finis a été développé et les résultats ont été exploités afin de simuler l'évolution de la probabilité de rupture de cupules en zircone au cours du temps. Les résultats s'accordent bien avec l'expérience, même si des améliorations sont nécessaires afin de prendre en compte l'érosion des surfaces de contact.

An international benchmark has been organized by EDF R&D during 2008–2010, gathering 11 partners. Its main objective is to quantify the confidence in numericalmodels. The built-up dynamical system considered is a pump actually in service in powerplants, considered in its work environment. Blind eigenfrequency numerical values relativeto the pump assembly fixed in concrete present a larger variability than the 5% roughvariability concerning the separate parts, essentially due to the modeling of the boundaryconditions and interfaces at macro level. For the nine first eigenmodes considered, experimental-numerical correlation shows a frequency error less than 15% for the freesub-structures and nearly 30% for the free five-component system. Though the first overallmodes are correctly identified, the frequency error is significantly larger for theclamped pump assembly, with however MAC coefficients higher than 0.9 for two modes; butthe frequency error can be reduced to less than 9% for the four first modes after updatingprocedure. A lesson to draw is that measurement information is needed to improve thequality of theoretical built-up structure. After this benchmark, a more ambitious researchprogram will follow as a FUI project, gathering the observation of numerical andexperimental variabilities, updating model improvement and numerical quantification of thetotal uncertainty.

Cet article représente une synthèse des études menées au CEA/SRMA, en collaboration avec l'ENSMP, sur la fissuration en relaxation (F.E.R.) des aciers inoxydables austénitiques. Initialement, l'étude a porté sur l'endommagement des Zones Affectées (Z.A.) des soudures en aciers stabilisés au titane de type AISI 321. Une démarche de simulation expérimentale de Z.A. par des traitements thermo-mécaniques a été mise en place. Un essai de relaxation sur éprouvette CT a également été mis au point afin de reproduire en laboratoire ce type de fissuration. Outre la validation de cette démarche, il a été montré que l'écrouissage joue un rôle prépondérant sur la fragilisation intergranulaire et que le vieillissement atténue cette fragilisation contrairement à ce qui est couramment admis dans la littérature.Cette remise en cause du rôle premier de la précipitation des carbonitrures de titane permet d'élargir le champ d'investigation aux aciers non stabilisés pour lesquels il existe un certain nombre de cas de fissuration similaires à ceux attribués à la F.E.R. En appliquant la démarche précédente à des aciers de type AISI 316 et AISI 304, on montre aussi que l'écrouissage est un facteur de fragilisation intergranulaire.Parallèlement, on établit, par approche locale de la rupture, un modèle d'endommagement intergranulaire utilisable pour l'évaluation du risque de fissuration sur des composants réels.

Il est proposé,dans ce travail,un modèle de comportement mécanique anisotrope des alliages de titane de type α (structure hexagonale compacte). Le modèle élasto-plastique choisi se compose d’unécrouissage cinématique et isotrope et d’un critère de plasticité non quadratique anisotrope de type Cazacu et al. (Orthotropic yield criterion for hexagonal closed packed metals,Int. J. Plasticity 22 (2006) 1171–1194) adapté à ces matériaux à structure hexagonale compacte. L’implémentation de celui-ci dans un logicieléléments-finis intègre deux repères de travail,dont celui des axes d’anisotropie réactualisé par le gradient de la transformation au cours de la mise en forme. Les paramètres des lois de comportement sont identifiés à partir d’essais de traction uniaxiale dans différentes directions. Des simulations,notamment de traction,de gonflage elliptique et d’emboutissage,ont permis de valider ce modèle. Une comparaison avec des cartographies de déformations,issues de mesure de champs,montre la bonne corrélation entre la simulation numérique et les tests expérimentaux pour les essais de gonflage elliptique.

Nous étudions expérimentalement la dynamique de mousses élastiques (mousse ouverteflexible en polyuréthane) plongées dans un fluide visqueux. La mousse est initialementcomprimée dans une direction puis brutalement relâchée. Le champ de vitesse de la mousseet la pression du fluide interstitiel (pression de pore) sont mesurés au cours de ladécompaction du système. Pour des petites compactions initiales, on observe que la mousserelaxe exponentiellement vers son état d’équilibre, avec une dynamique diffusive en accordquantitatif avec les théories classiques de consolidation des sols. En revanche, pour desgrandes compactions initiales, la dynamique de relaxation est inhomogène et se déroule àtravers un front de décompaction. Un modèle diphasique simple permet de prédiresemi-quantitativement les observations et relie l’existence du front au caractèrefortement non-linéaire de la réponse mécanique de la mousse.

Le présent travail concerne la détermination des propriétés mécaniques des âmes nids d'abeilles de forme hexagonale et de leurs versions sur-expansées rectangulaires. Ces âmes en papiers Nomex® sont présentes sur les voiliers multicoques de courses océaniques entièrement réalisés à partir de sandwichs à peaux de tissus carbones. Les caractéristiques mécaniques élastiques de ces âmes sont déterminées par modélisation tridimensionnelle à partir de la théorie de l'homogénéisation des milieux périodiques mise en œuvre dans le cadre de la méthode des éléments finis. L'étude confirme que les symétries des Volumes Élémentaires Représentatifs (VER) conduisent à des propriétés mécaniques homogénéisées orthotropes. Enfin, l'étude des modes de flambement des VERs permet de déterminer les contraintes ultimes de rupture du matériau homogène équivalent. Les techniques d'homogénéisation périodique développées dans cette étude ont été implantées dans le code de calcul éléments finis Cast3M-CEA. Les propriétés mécaniques et les limites à rupture des âmes en nids d'abeilles sont utilisées pour l'étude du renforcement des structures sandwichs proposées sur les trimarans océaniques de 60 pieds.

Due to their stability under high mechanical and thermal loads nickel-based alloys generate high cutting forces and temperatures during machining which adversely affect tool life. Especially in broaching with form shaped tools, deviations from the original tool geometry cause an inacceptable product quality. In aero engine industry, where quality standards for machining of safety critical parts are very high, this cannot be tolerated. Because of its tool geometry broaching is different from other machining processes: due to the high ratio between cutting edge radius and chipping thickness, the influence of the tool wear at the cutting edge is strong, especially for the finishing section. In order to guarantee stable machining processes in production, monitoring methods are desired that are capable to recognize changes in cutting conditions. The EU funded ACCENT project focuses on this challenge: the goal is to use process monitoring to make conclusions about the product quality during machining and, if necessary make adjustments to process input parameters to keep the quality measures in a defined window.

The bearing is one of the most important components of rotating machines. Nevertheless,in normal conditions of use, it is subject to fatigue which creates a defect called arolling fatigue spalling. In this work, we present a follow-up of the thrust bearingfatigue on a test bench. Vibration analysis is a method used to characterize the defect.In order to obtain the fatigue curve more adjusted, we have studied the vibration levelaccording to statistical indicators: the Root Mean Square value (RMS value), which is oneof the best indicators to show the evolution of the bearing degradation. The approachfollows the working of the bearing until the degradation with an on line acquisition ofvibration statements in form of time signals. With the signal treatment, we obtain thevalues of the vibration amplitudes which characterize the vibration state of the bearing.Consequently, these values allow us to plot the fatigue curves. During our experimentalwork, this operation is applied for a batch of thrust bearings for which we have obtainedsimilar fatigue curves where the evolution trend follows a regression model from thedetection of the onset of the first spall. The result of this work will contribute topredict the working residual time before failure.

This paper presents thermohydrodynamic solutions for a finite-width journal bearing withsingle axial groove on the crown by considering turbulent effects in lubricant film.Appropriate governing equations and boundary conditions are used for the fluid flow andheat transfer process occurring in finite full journal bearings. A general computerprogram is developed to numerically solve the set of governing equations. Results areprovided for THD characteristics of journal bearing in terms of Reynolds number, clearanceratio and eccentricity ratio. Good agreement with published experimental results wasachieved. The results indicate that the bearing temperature field and pressure field areconsiderably influenced by the journal bearing parameters.

Herein we develop a creep test method for characterizing nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour of an elastomer through weak deformation. This approach is based on an expanded Schapery model. Short term creep tests at various stress levels were performed upon specimens composed of a synthetic elastomer. A method to predict the long term creep behaviour using short term creep tests is presented. Experimental results and theoretical predictions are compared.

This paper synthesizes a whole of work carried out on the spiral bevel gears fromquasi-static and dynamic models viewpoint. A sophisticated quasi-static model makes itpossible to calculate the tooth loads, the pressures, the instant mesh stiffness, and thedeflections on the flanks of spiral bevel gears. Based on these results, twothree-dimensional lumped parameter dynamic models are presented. The mechanical systemunder consideration comprises: a spiral bevel pinion and gear connected by a time-varyingnon-linear mesh stiffness function, and mounted on two shafts simulated by Timoshenko’sbeams supported by bearings. Two variants are considered which rely on different contactstiffness simulations: (a) using an averaged mesh stiffness function acting at thecentroid of the loaded areas on tooth flanks and (b) a more local approach based on adiscrete distribution of the local mesh stiffness, elements over the contact areas. Anumber of results are presented and commented which illustrate the interest of thesedynamic models.

The main objective of this article is to study the effect of 2D coupled mode freeconvection with surface radiation on the fluid flow behavior in an air filled partitionedand shallow cavity subjected to isothermal or insulated boundary conditions. Thedimensionless governing equations under Boussinesq approximation are coupled with aradiative model through the boundaries conditions and solved by the finite volume method.The numerical results are discussed in terms of streamlines, isotherms, convective andradiative Nusselt numbers along the cover plate for various aspect ratios (a, b and c), emissivities andRayleigh number. These results highlighted the condition of the enclosure performance andrevealed among other that isothermal boundaries induce better convective heat exchangecompared to adiabatic cases. Also, it is noticed that varying aspect ratio(a) causesstrong influence on both Nusselt numbers compared to the aspect ratios (b) and (c). The increase of(ϵo) raisesNuconvand decreases Nuradslightly. Whereas, an increase of (ϵC) leads to minorchanges in Nuradwhen (b) or(c) vary,this effect becomes appreciable with increasing (a).

L'étude en convection forcée de la condensation en film laminaire d'une vapeur pure et saturée sur une plaque poreuse inclinée par rapport à la verticale, est présentée. Le modèle de Darcy-Brinkman est utilisé pour décrire l'écoulement dans le milieu poreux, tandis que les équations classiques de la couche limite ont été exploitées dans le liquide pur en tenant compte des termes d'inertie et de convection d'enthalpie. Le problème posé a été résolu par voies analytique et numérique. Les résultats sont essentiellement présentés sous forme de l'épaisseur adimensionnelle du film liquide, des profils de vitesse et de température et des coefficients d'échanges thermiques représentés par le nombre de Nusselt. Les résultats obtenus ont été comparés à ceux expérimentaux de Renken et al. [1]. Les effets de différents paramètres influents tels que : l'inclinaison (ϕ), la viscosité effective (nombre de Reynolds ReK), l'épaisseur adimensionnelle du substrat poreux H* et la conductivité thermique adimensionnelle k*, sur l'écoulement et les transferts thermiques sont illustrés.

This work deals with the application of the fuzzy logic to automate diagnosis of bearing defects in rotating machines based on vibration signals. The classification tool used is a fuzzy inference system (FIS) of Mamdani type. The vector form of input contains parameters extracted from the signals collected from the test bench studied. The output vector contains the classes for the different operating modes of the experimental study. The results show that; pretreatment data (filtering, decimation,...), the choice of parameters of fuzzy inference system (input variables and output, types and parameters of membership functions associated with different input and output variables of the system, the generation of fuzzy inference rules,...) are of major importance for the performance of fuzzy inference system used as a tool for fault diagnosis of rotating machinery.

This paper is based on additional treatments of the experimental results obtained by L. Bodelot, L. Sabatier, E. Charkaluk, P. Dufrénoy [Experimental setup for fully coupled kinematic and thermal measurements at the microstructure scale of an AISI 316l steel, Mater. Sci. Eng. A 501 (2009) 52–60]. In order to perform inter- and intragranular thermomechanical analyses in a metallic polycrystal at the grain scale, a crystallography-based projection technique of the thermal and displacement fields on a polynomial basis is proposed. It enables intragranular coupled analysis of strain and temperature full-field data consistent with the plastic slip activation observed on specimen surface after the test.

Les câbles actuellement utilisés en génie civil, notamment sur les ponts à haubans ou suspendus, sont constitués de fils d'acier cylindriques de diamètre compris entre 3 et 7 mm. Ils sont en acier non ou peu allié de composition proche de l'eutectoïde et sont obtenus par tréfilage à froid. Ils ont une résistance à la traction élevée (supérieure à 1900 MPa) et une faible ductilité.De par leur constitution, les câbles présentent une bonne robustesse en traction et une faible rigidité à la flexion. Cependant, les études conduites ces dernières années ont montré que les principales causes de détérioration des câbles sont liées à la corrosion et aux frottements interfilaires induits par la fatigue.Ces mécanismes de dégradation des câbles sont décrits dans cet article. Les différents moyens de protection des câbles du génie civil ont été initialement développés pour lutter contre la corrosion. Ils se présentent sous la forme de revêtements de type peinture, galvanisation, galfanisation, associées à une lubrification. Certains peuvent cependant avoir aussi des effets sur la fatigue.Les résultats expérimentaux et numériques obtenus sur fils unitaires, présentés dans cet article, montrent clairement l'effet bénéfique de la galvanisation et de la lubrification en termes de durée de vie en fretting fatigue. Cependant, les mécanismes de dégradation dus au fretting fatigue en présence de corrosion ne sont pas totalement connus et font l'objet actuellement d'une étude approfondie.

Floods through inundated urban environments constitute a hazard to the population andinfrastructure. A series of field measurements were performed in an inundated section ofthe City of Brisbane (Australia) during a major flood in January 2011. Using an acousticDoppler velocimeter (ADV), detailed velocity and suspended sediment concentrationmeasurements were conducted about the peak of the flood. The results are discussed with afocus on the safety of individuals in floodwaters and the sediment deposition during theflood recession. The force of the floodwaters in Gardens Point Road was deemed unsafe forindividual evacuation. A comparison with past laboratory results suggested that previousrecommendations could be inappropriate and unsafe in real flood flows.

In this paper, a subspace fitting method is proposed to update, in the time domain, thefinite element model of a rotating machine. The procedure is achieved by minimizing anerror norm, leading to the comparison between experimental and theoretical observabilitymatrices. Experimental observability matrix is obtained through a MOESP subspaceidentification algorithm, by projecting the output signal onto some appropriate subspaces,resulting in a cancellation of input excitations and noises. The theoretical observabilitymatrix is obtained from modal parameters of a finite element model of the structure. Theminimization procedure is carried out through a Gauss-Newton algorithm. The method isapplied to determine the foundation stiffness of an experimental rotating machine subjectto a random noise.

The present work fosters experimental measurements and mathematical modelling techniquesto primarily determine the thermal and the relative humidity characteristics in theair-conditioned surgical operating room. The present work also demonstrates the effect ofthe various designs of surgical operating rooms and operational parameters on the flowpattern and temperatures characteristics. This study is a part of a more comprehensiveinvestigation of the more important factors affecting the air environments in surgicaloperating room. Measured and predicted temperatures and relative humidity profiles areshown to be in good agreement. The present paper introduces several recommendationsregarding the optimum design requirements of operating rooms to provide hygiene andcomfort environment. Low humidity affects comfort and health. The present work offersexamples of measured relative humidity profiles in an operating room in (New Kasr El-AiniTeaching Hospital – 1200 beds – Cairo University – Egypt). These experimental results werecarried out to verify the proposed numerical procedure and particularly in the vicinity ofthe supply outlets and operating table.
