The British Institute for Libyan and Northern African Studies
The British Institute for Libyan and Northern African Studies (BILNAS), founded in 1969, under its original name, The Society for Libyan Studies, is established as a British International Research Institute (BIRI, affiliated to the British Academy), and a Registered Charity No. 259262. Its aims are to support and undertake research relating to the history, antiquities, culture, languages, literature, art, institutions and customs of Libya and Northern Africa. It also aims to foster and develop relations between British and Northern African scholars, and others working in the wider region. The BILNAS webpage address is: https://www.bilnas.org/
Membership and Subscriptions
Those who wish to join BILNAS can apply online through the membership page of the website, which also details payment methods, including credit card payments, or by contacting the General Secretary by email at: gensec@bilnas.org.
The subscription rate is £30 per annum for those based in Britain or resident overseas. Members have access to Libyan Studies online, current and previous issues, can attend lectures and other events and are
entitled to use the BILNAS Library at SOAS at no charge as well as the Archive.
Meetings
BILNAS presents virtual and in-person lectures throughout the year. The Annual General Meeting takes place in June. Details of all meetings are circulated in advance to all members and are also available on the website.
The Library and Archive
The BILNAS Library has a considerable collection of books on Libyan and related Northern African studies. The collection is unique in Britain, and many items are rare and unavailable elsewhere. The Library is housed at the School of Oriental and African Studies Library, University of London, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WClH OXG. The General Secretary will provide a letter of introduction for members of BILNAS who wish to obtain a membership card granting access to the Library.
The BILNAS Archive is hosted at the University of Leicester, and the catalogue is currently being put online, https://www.bilnas.org/resources/archive/. It may be accessed in person, by members of BILNAS and researchers by arrangement with the General Secretary.
Publications
The BILNAS academic journal, Libyan Studies, is published in November each year. It includes articles, reports, notes and reviews relating to current research on Libya, Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Guidelines for contributors are available online through the BILNAS webpage, and intending contributors should consult the Editor, Libyan Studies, publications@bilnas.org. Contributions can be sent throughout the year. Please contact the General Secretary if you have a book for review. All enquiries for the current issue or for back-numbers of Libyan Studies should be addressed to Cambridge University Press, University Printing House, Shaftesbury Road, Cambridge CB2 8BS, UK.
BILNAS publishes academic monographs, a series in collaboration with Cambridge University Press, and, under the Silphium Press imprint, popular works on Northern Africa including its series of Libya Archaeological Guides. BILNAS also produces e-books for all new publications and most of the volumes in the backlist are also available in Open Access through the BILNAS website as well as through our partners JSTOR, OAPEN, and Unglue.it. All publications are listed on the BILNAS website and may be ordered from the General Secretary by members with discounts of 25% or more.
Orders from non-members should be addressed to our distributor, details on our website.
Grants in Aid of Research
BILNAS offers grants for researchers to undertake research projects, or research programmes, upon Libya and the wider Northern African region. Our remit covers the broad range of the Humanities and the Social Sciences (as addressed by the British Academy). Details of how to apply for a research grant are found on the BILNAS website.
