Thin-walled orthotropic shells of arbitrary form reinforced from the concave side by a cross-sectional stiffening system oriented in parallel to coordinate lines are examined. Geometrical nonlinearity and transverse shears are taken into account, but it is presumed that a shell is shallow.

Mixed-form equations are more simplified equations of a shell theory as compared to displacement equations, but they are more convenient for some types of fixing of the shell edges (for example, for movable pin fixing).

Forces are expressed using a stress function in a middle surface of a shell in such a way that the first two equilibrium equations are satisfied identically. Shell deformation is also expressed using this function.

The third equation of strain compatibility is used to form one of the mixed-form equations. Curvature and torsion change functions for this equation are written in the same way as for the Kirchhoff–Love model, though also taking into account transverse shears.

The study attempted to observe the surface characteristics of the flank lock type precision locknut which was assembled in a vertical type and operates under different tightening speed. The speed setting was in according with the specifications of 4rpm, 6rpm and 8rpm conditions to set up this experiment. A type of 2TML lubricant was used. The experiment investigated the surface characteristics of a locknut, including contact surface flatness, contact surface roughness, and thread surface roughness before and after the designed test. According to the contact surface flatness of the locknut obtained from this study, it was found that the surface of the locknut contacting with the bearing resulted into a deterioration of the surface flatness and surface roughness during the tests. Furthermore, the thread surface roughness has been changed at different thread for different tightening speed during the test, especially at threads 1, 2, 7 and 8. The study found that some of variations occurred in the values of Ra, Rz and Rmax at different thread of a locknut. The variation of Rmax is the most among them.

There has been wide-spread use of plane wave theory in muffler design in industry. However, This has led to an underestimation of acoustical performances at higher frequencies. To overcome the above drawback, the finite element and boundary element methods have been developed. Nevertheless, the time consumed in calculating the noise level is unacceptable. Moreover, considering the acoustical effect and necessity of space-constrained situation in industry, a compact design of reverse mufflers which may improve the acoustical efficiency is then proposed.

In this paper, a numerical assessment of rectangular mufflers hybridized with straight/reverse chambers using eigen function, four-pole matrix, and genetic algorithm under limited space is developed. Before the optimization is performed, an accuracy check of the mathematical models for the muffler will be carried out. Results reveal that the noise reduction will increase when the number of chambers increases. In addition, the acoustical performance of the mufflers is reversely proportional to the diameter of the inlet/outlet tubes. Also, the TL of the mufflers will be improved when using more number of target tones in the objective function. Consequently, a successful approach in searching optimal shaped rectangular straight/reverse mufflers using an eigen function and a genetic algorithm method within a constrained space has been demonstrated.

A highly efficient parallelization scheme of direct numerical simulation (DNS) for two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection is presented. By introducing the parallel diagonal dominant (PDD) algorithm to solve the pressure Poisson equation and adjusting the domain decomposition accordingly, all-to-all communication as the usual obstacle to parallel computing can be eliminated. Excellent strong scaling and weak scaling for the parallel efficiency are achieved. Numerical results show that very complex structures in flow exist at very high Ra numbers. The required high resolution both in space and in time can be obtained by the present method at low parallel overhead.

This article focus on the rigid-liquid coupling dynamics of the spacecraft with arbitrary axisymmetrical tanks with curved walls and top. The carrier velocity potential function was obtained according to the motion equations of a representative point in the tank of spacecraft, and the relative velocity potential function can be expressed as Gauss hypergeometric series. The Hamilton's variational principle was applied to derive the governing equations of liquid sloshing based on the profile of hydrostatic shape of free liquid surface. The dynamic equations of modal coordinates were established through the Galerkin method. The state equations of coupled motion of main rigid platform of the spacecraft were deduced by using the Lagrange's equations in term of general quasi-coordinates. Thruster firing was actuated to the coupled system to analyze the rigid-liquid coupled dynamic behaviors. Computer numerical simulations was carried out to confirm the validity of the method developed in this paper.

The study investigates three-dimensional kinematics of lower limb for female Chinese population during normal squatting activity. 25 young female and 25 elder female Chinese subjects were recruited. With each subject's data collected, the means of three-dimensional rotation angles of knee, hip, and ankle joints of those two groups were calculated and analyzed. Measured results showed that the maximal eccentric range of hip flexion/extension of 128.6° for the young female group (P < 0.05) was compared with that of 158.8° for the elder female group. Thus, the elder female undergoes more hip flexion/extension angles than the young female in the posture of squatting. The mean range of motion (ROM) of knee flexion/extension was 140.2° for the young female group and 138.7° (significant level P > 0.05) for the elder female group. The mean ROM of ankle flexion/extension was 47.90° for the young female group and 31.9° (P > 0.05) for the elder female group. The ROMs obtained in the experiment during squatting were greater than the reported ones achieved after joint arthroplasty. These data may be invaluable in providing designers of lower limb prosthesis with basic mechanical parameters, and assessing the effect of kinematics of low limb on rehabilitation for the Chinese population.

The transient impact hypothesis was extended, and the oblique collision model was established by considering the tangential slip. In order to solve this problem, the oblique-impact equations for cam-follower were transformed into a linear complementarity problem. Impulsive control method was employed to control or anti-control the nonlinear responses. The simulation results show that the cam-follower system performs very complex nonlinear characteristics, such as period, quasi-period and chaos responses. Using the impulsive control method, the nonlinear responses of the cam-follower system can be controlled to P(n, n) and P(∞, n) or anti-controlled to chaos.

The effective lifetimes of electronic packages are affected by various thermos-mechanical deformations. Creep is considered the most salient mechanism in the failure of solder joints. Many researchers have conducted reasonable studies to portray the behavior of creep deformation using numerical models and further extended their research scope to forecast the lifetimes of packages with the results obtained from creep models. Many studies have identified particular creep and lifetime models to be nominal based on experimental data.

In this study, the characteristics of familiar creep models were examined in detail, and their significance was made known. Lifetime prediction models that seem prominent among researchers were discussed in detail. Finite element analysis of a wafer level chip-scale package (WLCSP) used to figure out the engagement of different creep models and their capability of materializing creep deformation was investigated via simulation. The results from the simulation were applied to different lifetime prediction models, and their predictions were examined carefully. After considering the various factors that affected the reliability study of the solders, the Garofalo-Arrhenius creep model and modified strain energy density model seemed to be convincingly productive for studying the reliability of various electronic packages.

It has demonstrated to exploit various layout effects of advanced strained engineering to enhanced the performance of nano-scaled transistors. In actual fabrications, the gate framework usually protrudes out to the channel area even over the spuriously diffused active region, over the soft shallow trench isolation region. The foregoing device feature is interesting and critical when enhancing and managing mobility gain are taken into account by used mechanics and induced strained silicon technology in narrow scale channel widths devices. Thus, a silicon-based 22 nm p-type MOSFET combined stressors of a source/drain Si75Ge25 alloy and a -2 GPa compressive contact etch stop layer with different protrudent gate widths to investigate this issue. The fabricated oriented stress simulation extracted stress component within the device channel to estimate and analyze the performance of mobility gain and stress contours for the concerned nanoscale device.

With the aid of the Green's function method and complex function method, the scattering problem of SH-wave by a circular inclusion near the two symmetrically permeable interfacial cracks in the piezoelectric bi-material half -space is considered to obtain the steady state response. Firstly, by means of the image method, the essential function of Green's function is constructed, which satisfies the stress free and electric insulation conditions on the horizontal boundaries in a right-angle space including a circular inclusion and bearing a harmonic out-plane line source force on the vertical boundary. Secondly, the bi-material media is divided into two parts along the vertical boundary. According to continuity condition, the first kind of Fredholm integral equations containing undetermined anti-plane forces are established by “the conjunction method” and “the crack-division technology”, then the integral equations are reduced to the algebraic equations including finite items by effective truncation. Finally, the dynamic stress concentration factor around the edge of circular inclusion and dynamic stress intensity factor at the crack tip are calculated, then the influences of the frequency of incident wave, the length of crack, the position of the crack, the position of circular inclusion, etc. on the dynamic stress concentration factor and dynamic stress intensity factor are discussed.

We numerically verify better fluid mixing efficiency can be achieved by alternating injection scheme in a heterogeneous porous medium, whose permeability heterogeneity is characterized by two statistical parameters, i.e., the variance s and the correlation length l. Nevertheless, the fingering pattern is strongly affected by permeability distribution to result in similar fingering interface on each of injected layer of less viscous fluids. Instead of randomly chaotic fingering interaction in a homogeneous condition, more orderly channeling interaction occurs in a heterogeneous medium. As a result, higher Peclet number Pe (relative measure of advection and diffusion effects) generally leads to worse mixing efficiency in a heterogeneous medium, which might contradict the result found in a homogeneous case. By the same token, in the cases which strong chaotic fingering interaction already exists in homogeneous conditions, e.g., sufficiently short alternating injection interval Δt, large viscosity contrast A and high Pe, the presence of permeability heterogeneity would constrain the randomly chaotic fingering interaction and favors the more orderly channeling interaction, so that mixing efficiency is deteriorated compared with the corresponding homogeneous case.

The insert groove geometry is an important part of turning tool design. In this article, a systematic design approach is presented for the chip breaker design in turning. The chip breaking ability of various groove geometry of a turning insert is investigated. The ratio of chip thickness to chip curl radius is taken as the index of chip breaking performance. Taguchi method is applied to analyze the contribution to chip breaking performance of each geometric parameter. Response surface methodology is then used to construct a predictive model evaluating the effect of turning conditions and groove geometry on chip breaking performance. The result of this study shows that the feed rate significantly affects chip breaking performance, and that insert with larger land angle, higher back wall and smaller groove is more effective in chip breaking. Among the parameters of the insert groove, the width of the groove has the greatest contribution to chip breaking than the others. The simulation results and predictions are validated by turning experiments.

In engineering industries, composite laminates have been widely applied for various applications. This work presents an efficient analysis of the interlaminar stresses in three-dimensional thin layered anisotropic composites by the boundary element method (BEM). Due to the nearly singular integrals in the boundary integral equation, the conventional BEM approach cannot be applied to analyze the composite layers that are very thin. The present work employs the self-regularization scheme to analyze the interlaminar stresses in thin anisotropic composites. In the end, a few benchmark examples are presented to show the applicability of the present approach.

This study investigated the effects of considering surface and nonlocal energy parameters on the buckling analysis of double piezoelectric nanoplate (DPNP) embedded in elastic foundations and thermal environments. Both in-phase and out-of-phase modes of buckling and various boundary conditions are studied and compared with each other. The governing equations were derived by drawing on the principle of virtual work and then solved by employing the finite difference method. Finite difference solution was validated using Navier's method and journal references. A parametric study was also launched in order to investigate the effects of the external electric voltage, nonlocal parameters, different boundary conditions, elastic foundations and thermal environments on the surface effect of DPNP buckling. The obtained numerical results showed that the influence of surface stress on in-phase and out-of-phase modes of buckling of the DPNP was enhanced by augmenting the nonlocal parameters and external electric voltage; on the other hand, it was found to be decreased by increasing elastic foundations and temperature changes. In addition, the value of surface stress effects for the in-phase mode was higher than that of the out-of-phase one.

The present paper is focused on the delamination fracture in a multilayered two-dimensional functionally graded beam configuration which exhibits non-linear behavior of the material. The beam is loaded by two longitudinal forces applied at the beam free ends. The beam contains a delamination crack which is located symmetrically with respect to the beam mid-span. The delamination is studied analytically in terms of the strain energy release rate. The J-integral approach is applied for verification of the analysis of the strain energy release rate. The solution derived is valid for a beam made of an arbitrary number of layers. It is assumed that each layer has individual thickness and material properties. Also, the material is two-dimensional functionally graded in the cross-section of each layer. The solution obtained can be applied for a delamination crack located arbitrary along the height of the beam cross-section. It is shown that the solution is very convenient for investigating the influences of material gradients and crack location on the delamination fracture behavior. The results obtained can be used for optimization of multilayered two-dimensional functionally graded structural members and components with respect to their delamination fracture performance.

A simple numerical method is proposed in the paper for fluid flow around a moving boundary of irregular shape. The unsteady term is discretized with the implicit scheme such that large time step is allowed. All of the computations are performed on non-staggered Cartesian grid system. Fine Cartesian patch grid system covering the moving object is employed to resolve the solution around the solid body. A closed curve defined by connecting the solid grid points adjacent to the solid-liquid interface is referred to as virtual boundary. The narrow irregular strip of solid between the virtual boundary and the actual solid-fluid interface is called pseudo-fluid. The general fluid region consisting of both fluid and pseudo-fluid is a regular domain that can be efficiently solved with conventional numerical method. In this connection, external force is imposed at each fluid grid point adjacent to the solid-fluid interface to compensate for the numerical error arising from the assumption of pseudo-fluid. The solution procedure is iterated until the required external force converges. Accuracy of the new numerical method is validated through three test problems. The numerical method then is used to investigate the flow induced by the flapping wings of a tethered dragonfly in literature. The corresponding CFL numbers of the four examples are infinity, 20, 100, and 3.29.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is an important physical phenomenon as one design a riser or a cylindrical structure in ocean. As the riser or the cylindrical structure is adjacent to a seabed, the boundary effect on VIV is not fully understood yet. The direct-forcing immersed boundary (DFIB) method is used to investigate a two-degree-of-freedom VIV of a flexible supported circular cylinder adjacent to a plane boundary in this study. Furthermore, the effect of the VIV of cylinder on skin friction of the plane boundary is investigated. The effects of varying reduced velocity and gap ratio on VIV are discussed. Only a single vortex street is found when the cylinder is close to plane boundary. Hydrodynamic coefficients of the freely vibrating cylinder are analyzed in time and spectral domains. Furthermore, nearly round oval-shaped motion is observed as the so-called lock-in phenomenon occurs. The skin friction of the plane boundary is predicted by the DFIB model. Results show that the vibrating cylinder in the boundary layer flow can reduce the friction effectively. This proposed DFIB model can be useful for the investigation of VIV of the structures under the plane boundary effect even for a small gap between the cylinder and the boundary.

In the recent years, the development of wind turbines has been so hectic in Taiwan. The design of the turbine blades directly impacts power effectiveness. In this study, the effects of manufacturing parameters and environmental factors on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites that are used in turbine blades are discussed. Parameters of the manufacturing process affect the mechanical properties. Carbon composites made by a different numbers of layers are tested on various aspects of performance such as mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

The study aims to estimate the stress-strain constitutive behavior of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) observed in a solder interconnect from experimental nanoindentation responses through a modified analysis procedure for improved solution robustness based on Cheng and Cheng's and Dao et al.'s models. On the basis of parametric finite element nanoindentation simulation and dimensional analysis together with the concept of representative strain, a set of universal dimensionless functions are established, by which a forward and reverse analysis algorithm are created to predict nanoindentation responses from given elastoplastic properties and vice versa, respectively. The proposed analysis procedure is validated through comparison with the experimental nanoindentation responses and limited literature data. The results show that the proposed analysis procedure is an effective means for plastic property characterization of micro/nanoscale IMCs. The representative strain is found to be 0.056, which differs from the Dao et al.'s and Giannakopoulos and Suresh's estimate. Besides, though generally brittle and hard in nature, the IMCs in a micro/nanoscale thickness show high plasticity, and comprise a yield strength surpassing most typical engineering metals.
