A class of games for finding a leader among a group of candidates is studied in detail. This class covers games based on coin tossing and rock-paper-scissors as special cases and its complexity exhibits similar stochastic behaviors: either of logarithmic mean and bounded variance or of exponential mean and exponential variance. Many applications are also discussed.

The (conditional or unconditional) distribution of the continuous scan statistic in a one-dimensional Poisson process may be approximated by that of a discrete analogue via time discretization (to be referred to as the discrete approximation). Using a change of measure argument, we derive the first-order term of the discrete approximation which involves some functionals of the Poisson process. Richardson's extrapolation is then applied to yield a corrected (second-order) approximation. Numerical results are presented to compare various approximations.

Consider a finite or infinite collection of urns, each with capacity r, and balls randomly distributed among them. An overflow is the number of balls that are assigned to urns that already contain r balls. When $r=1$ , this is the number of balls landing in non-empty urns, which has been studied in the past. Our aim here is to use martingale methods to study the asymptotics of the overflow in the general situation, i.e. for arbitrary r. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for both Poissonian and normal asymptotics.

The multitype discrete time indecomposable branching process with immigration is considered. Using a martingale approach a limit theorem is proved for such processes when the totality of immigrating individuals at a given time depends on evolution of the processes generating by previously immigrated individuals. Corollaries of the limit theorem are obtained for the cases of finite and infinite second moments of offspring distribution in critical processes.

The motion of electrons through a gas of particles is modelled as a two-state process: an electron is alternatingly moving and being held captive by a non-moving particle, during exponentially distributed periods.

The model contains a parameter p, the probability that collision of an electron with a gas particle does not lead to its capture but produces an extra electron.

The quantity of interest is the current C(t) produced by the moving electrons, as a function of time.

We show that the supremum of the successive percentages of red balls in Pólya's urn model is almost surely rational, give the set of values that are taken with positive probability, and derive several exact distributional results for the all-time maximal percentage.

A new upper bound on the stationary waiting-time distribution of a GI/G/1 queue is derived following Kingman's martingale approach. This bound is generally stronger than Kingman's upper bound and is sometimes stronger than an upper bound derived by Ross.

Looking at a large branching population we determine along which path the population that started at 1 at time 0 ended up in B at time N. The result describes the density process, that is, population numbers divided by the initial number K (where K is assumed to be large). The model considered is that of a Galton-Watson process. It is found that in some cases population paths exhibit the strange feature that population numbers go down and then increase. This phenomenon requires further investigation. The technique uses large deviations, and the rate function based on Cramer's theorem is given. It also involves analysis of existence of solutions of a certain algebraic equation.

The model Y(t) = s(t | θ) + ε(t) is studied in the case that observations are made at scattered points τ j in a subset of Rp and θ is a finite-dimensional parameter. The particular cases of 0 = (α, β) and (α, β, ω) are considered in detail. Consistency and asymptotic normality results are developed assuming that the spatial series ε(·) and the point process {τ j} are independent, stationary and mixing. The estimates considered are equivalent to least squares asymptotically and are not generally asymptotically efficient.

Contributions of the paper include: study of the Rp case, management of irregularly placed observations, allowance for abnormal domains of observation and the discovery that aliasing complications do not arise when the point process {τ j} is mixing. There is a brief discussion of the construction and properties of maximum likelihood estimates for the spatial-temporal case.

A branching process is described which contains some better-known simple branching processes as special cases. Variables examined are the rate of development, the number of individuals currently alive, and the duration of the process. The apparent dynamics of collapsing supercritical realisations are isolated.

The paper considers an extension to the reversible counters system of Lampard [1]. In Lampard's model the input processes are two independent Poisson processes; this results in a gamma Markov sequence for the time-interval between successive output pulses and a negative binomial Markov sequence for the counts at the times of out-put pulses. We consider the input process to be a bivariate Poisson process and show that the first out-put process given above is not affected, while the second out-put-process becomes of a type studied in the theory of branching processes.

In this paper we relate the set of structure-preserving equivalent martingale measures ℳsp for financial models driven by semimartingales with conditionally independent increments to a set of measurable and integrable functions 𝒴. More precisely, we prove that ℳsp ≠ ∅ if and only if 𝒴 ≠ ∅, and connect the sets ℳsp and 𝒴 to the semimartingale characteristics of the driving process. As examples we consider integrated Lévy models with independent stochastic factors and time-changed Lévy models and derive mild conditions for ℳsp ≠ ∅.

We consider a multiple regression model in which the regressors are Fourier cosine vectors. These regressors are intended as approximations to ‘slowly changing' regressors of the kind often found in time series regression applications. The errors in the model are assumed to be generated by a special type of autoregressive model defined so that the regressors are eigenvectors of the quadratic forms occurring in the exponent of the probability density of the errors. This autoregression is intended as an approximation to the usual stationary autoregression. Both approximations are adopted for the sake of mathematical convenience.

Student's t-statistics are constructed for the autoregressive coefficients in a manner analogous to ordinary regression. It is shown that these statistics are distributed as Student's t to the first order of approximation, that is with errors in the density of order T−1/2, where T is the sample size, while the squares of the statistics are distributed as the square of Student's t to the second order of approximation, that is with errors in the density of order Τ–1.

The classical one-compartment model with no input or pure death process is shown to be a limiting case of a ‘binomial cascade' model which has the same mean and in which particles exit the compartment in binomial clusters. The transition probabilities of the binomial cascade process are derived in closed form. The model is easily modified to allow Poisson input into the compartment. Distributional results are given for this model also. In particular, it is shown that the M/M/∞ queue is a limiting case.

We consider a continuous Gaussian random field living on a compact set $T\subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ . We are interested in designing an asymptotically efficient estimator of the probability that the integral of the exponential of the Gaussian process over T exceeds a large threshold u. We propose an Asmussen–Kroese conditional Monte Carlo type estimator and discuss its asymptotic properties according to the assumptions on the first and second moments of the Gaussian random field. We also provide a simulation study to illustrate its effectiveness and compare its performance with the importance sampling type estimator of Liu and Xu (2014a).

We consider a multivariate Lévy process where the first coordinate is a Lévy process with no negative jumps which is not a subordinator and the others are non-decreasing. We determine the Laplace–Stieltjes transform of the steady-state buffer content vector of an associated system of parallel queues. The special structure of this transform allows us to rewrite it as a product of joint Laplace–Stieltjes transforms. We are thus able to interpret the buffer content vector as a sum of independent random vectors.

Hoeffding's inequality can be used in conjunction with the declared parameters of a traffic source, such as its peak rate, to obtain confidence intervals for measurements of the traffic's effective bandwidth. We describe a variety of interval-estimation procedures based on this idea, designed to provide differing degrees of robustness against non-stationarity. We also discuss how to compute confidence intervals for the effective bandwidth of an aggregate of traffic sources.

We study the uncertain dichotomous choice model. In this model, a group of expert decision makers is required to select one of two alternatives. The applications of this model are relevant to a wide variety of areas. A decision rule translates the individual opinions of the members into a group decision, and is optimal if it maximizes the probability of the group making a correct choice. In this paper, we assume the correctness probabilities of the experts to be independent random variables selected from some given distribution. Moreover, the ranking of the members in the group is (at least partly) known. Thus, one can follow rules based on this ranking. The extremes are the expert rule and the majority rule. The probabilities of the two extreme rules being optimal were compared in a series of early papers, for a variety of distributions. In most cases, the asymptotic behaviours of the probabilities of the two extreme rules followed the same patterns. Do these patterns hold in general? If not, what are the ranges of possible asymptotic behaviours of the probabilities of the two extreme rules being optimal? In this paper, we provide satisfactory answers to these questions.

A large deviations principle (LDP), demonstrated for occupancy problems with indistinguishable balls, is generalized to the case in which balls are distinguished by a finite number of colors. The colors of the balls are chosen independently from the occupancy process itself. There are r balls thrown into n urns with the probability of a ball entering a given urn being 1/n (i.e. Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics). The LDP applies with the scale parameter, n, tending to infinity and r increasing proportionally. The LDP holds under mild restrictions, the key one being that the coloring process by itself satisfies an LDP. This includes the important special cases of deterministic coloring patterns and colors chosen with fixed probabilities independently for each ball.
