For stationary Poisson or Poisson cluster processes ξ on R2 we study the distribution of the interpoint distances using the interpoint distance function and the nearest-neighbor indicator function . Here Sr (x) is the interior of a circle of radius r having center x, I(t) is that subset of D which has x ∊ D and St(x) ⊂ D and χ is the usual indicator function. We show that if the region D ⊂ R2 is large, then these functions are approximately distributed as Poisson processes indexed by and , where µ(D) is the Lebesgue measure of D.

If an n × n stochastic matrix has a column with no zeros, one can immediately conclude that the chain is ergodic and the state corresponding to that column is persistent and aperiodic. In this paper it is shown that it is decidable whether or not some power of a finite stochastic matrix has a positive column. Some problems regarding positive columns in infinite stochastic matrices are also considered.

The class of inverses of a p-thinned renewal process is considered. It is shown that this class consists of renewal processes. It consists of Cox and renewal processes if and only if the given thinned process is Cox and renewal. In the non-Cox case, there exists a unique top renewal process, which by thinning generates all the possible inverses. Conditions for a renewal process to be a top process are given. Finally, a gamma renewal process is shown to be a top process when α > 1, where α is the shape parameter of the gamma distribution.

The purpose of this note is two-fold. First, to introduce the mathematical reader to a group of problems in the study of language change which has received little attention from mathematicians and probabilists. Secondly, to introduce a birth and death process, arising naturally out of this group of problems, which has received little attention in the literature. This process can be solved using the standard methods and the solution is exhibited here.

We consider a system of particles in birth and death on a Brownian flow. The system includes a particle process tracking the spatial configuration of live particles on the flow. The particle process is a Markov process on the space of counting measures. The system depends on a handful of parameters including a rate of drift, diffusion, birth, and killing. We exhibit a Girsanov formula for the absolutely continuous change of particle system by way of a change of drift, birth, and killing rates. We can only allow for a restrictive change of drift on the flow, but for fairly unrestrictive change of birth and death rates. The result is therefore of some interest in problems of statistical inference from passive transport of transient tracers.

One-dimensional, periodic and annihilating systems of Brownian motions and random walks are defined and interpreted in terms of sizeless particles which vanish on contact. The generating function and moments of the number pairs of particles which have vanished, given an arbitrary initial arrangement, are derived in terms of known two-particle survival probabilities. Three important special cases are considered: Brownian motion with the particles initially (i) uniformly distributed and (ii) equally spaced on a circle and (iii) random walk on a lattice with initially each site occupied. Results are also given for the infinite annihilating particle systems obtained in the limit as the number of particles and the size of the circle or lattice increase. Application of the results to the theory of diffusion-limited reactions is discussed.

Scaling of proposals for Metropolis algorithms is an important practical problem in Markov chain Monte Carlo implementation. Analyses of the random walk Metropolis for high-dimensional targets with specific functional forms have shown that in many cases the optimal scaling is achieved when the acceptance rate is approximately 0.234, but that there are exceptions. We present a general set of sufficient conditions which are invariant to orthonormal transformation of the coordinate axes and which ensure that the limiting optimal acceptance rate is 0.234. The criteria are shown to hold for the joint distribution of successive elements of a stationary pth-order multivariate Markov process.

Suppose that n persons each know a different piece of information, and that, whenever a pair of them talk on the telephone, each tells the other all the information he knows at that time. If the calls are made at random, we show that the expected number of calls required for everyone to know all n pieces of information is asymptotically 1.5 n log n + O(n). This sharpens an earlier result of D. W. Boyd and J. M. Steele. Some numerical comparisons are given.

In this paper we derive the distribution of the total downtime of a repairable system during a given time interval. We allow dependence of the failure time and the repair time. The results are presented in the form of Laplace transforms which can be inverted numerically. We also discuss asymptotic properties of the total downtime.

The paper examines multivariate delayed marked renewal processes, of which one component is formed by a delayed compound Poisson process observed at epochs of some point process. In addition, the values of these observations (and other components) are watched when crossing their respective thresholds and the value of the original Poisson process at any moment of time, past the first passage time, is the objective of this investigation. The results (which are imperative for classes of semiregenerative processes) are given in closed analytical forms and illustrated on various stochastic models.

This paper investigates the ordering properties of largest claim amounts in heterogeneous insurance portfolios in the sense of some transform orders, including the convex transform order and the star order. It is shown that the largest claim amount from a set of independent and heterogeneous exponential claims is more skewed than that from a set of independent and homogeneous exponential claims in the sense of the convex transform order. As a result, a lower bound for the coefficient of variation of the largest claim amount is established without any restrictions on the parameters of the distributions of claim severities. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are presented to compare the skewness of the largest claim amounts from two sets of independent multiple-outlier scaled claims according to the star order. Some comparison results are also developed for the multiple-outlier proportional hazard rates claims. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate these theoretical results.

Weak local linear approximations have played a prominent role in the construction of effective inference methods and numerical integrators for stochastic differential equations. In this note two weak local linear approximations for stochastic differential equations with jumps are introduced as a generalization of previous ones. Their respective order of convergence is obtained as well.

We consider some linear regression models Y = Σα lfl(z) + X, where X is an autoregressive (AR) process. The residuals estimate the i.i.d. innovations sequence which drives the AR process. We then consider the partial sum process of the residuals and show they converge to Brownian bridges in certain cases. Some remarks are also made on similar processes when differencing is first applied to remove trends. When an AR process is differenced the residual partial sum can be asymptotically a random polynomial.

We consider a polling system with two queues, exhaustive service, no switchover times, and exponential service times with rate µ in each queue. The waiting cost depends on the position of the queue relative to the server: it costs a customer c per time unit to wait in the busy queue (where the server is) and d per time unit in the idle queue (where there is no server). Customers arrive according to a Poisson process with rate λ. We study the control problem of how arrivals should be routed to the two queues in order to minimize the expected waiting costs and characterize individually and socially optimal routeing policies under three scenarios of available information at decision epochs: no, partial, and complete information. In the complete information case, we develop a new iterative algorithm to determine individually optimal policies (which are symmetric Nash equilibria), and show that such policies can be described by a switching curve. We use Markov decision processes to compute the socially optimal policies. We observe numerically that the socially optimal policy is well approximated by a linear switching curve. We prove that the control policy described by this linear switching curve is indeed optimal for the fluid version of the two-queue polling system.

By applying a perturbation method to the structured coalescent process in population genetics theory, we obtain the approximate solutions of the moment generating functions for the total coalescence time, the number of segregating sites among sampled DNA sequences and the number of allele types in a sample in the case of strong migration.

The present paper provides simple inequalities for the number of lost customers during a busy period of a GI/M/1/n queueing system.

Classical extreme value theory for stationary sequences of random variables can to a large extent be paraphrased as the study of exceedances over a high threshold. A special role within the description of the temporal dependence between such exceedances is played by the extremal index. Parts of this theory can be generalized not only to random variables on an arbitrary state space hitting certain failure sets, but even to a triangular array of rare events on an abstract probability space. In the case of M4 (maxima of multivariate moving maxima) processes, the arguments take a simple and direct form.

In this paper we study a generalized coupon collector problem, which consists of analyzing the time needed to collect a given number of distinct coupons that are drawn from a set of coupons with an arbitrary probability distribution. We suppose that a special coupon called the null coupon can be drawn but never belongs to any collection. In this context, we prove that the almost uniform distribution, for which all the nonnull coupons have the same drawing probability, is the distribution which stochastically minimizes the time needed to collect a fixed number of distinct coupons. Moreover, we show that in a given closed subset of probability distributions, the distribution with all its entries, but one, equal to the smallest possible value is the one which stochastically maximizes the time needed to collect a fixed number of distinct coupons.

The present paper deals with continuous-time Markov branching processes allowing immigration. The immigration rate is allowed to be random and time-dependent where randomness may stem from an external source or from state-dependence. Unlike the traditional approach, we base the analysis of these processes on the theory of multivariate point processes. Using the tools of this theory, asymptotic results on parametric inference are derived for the subcritical case. In particular, the limit distributions of some parametric estimators and of Pearson-type statistics for testing simple and composite hypotheses are established.

The water level in a reservoir is modelled as a controlled diffusion process on a compact interval of the real line. The problem is to control the water discharge rate so as to minimise the expected costs, which depend upon the histories of the water levels and release rates. The form of the optimal control is studied for two general classes of reservoir control problems.
