In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association included Internet Gaming Disorder in the appendix of the 5th edition of the DSM-5, suggesting more research is necessary for the condition to be officially accepted as mental disorder. Criticisms have emerged as to the viability, validity and reliability of the proposed condition, and researchers have pointed out that the subsuming of Internet addiction under the umbrella term of Internet Gaming Disorder (as is the case in the DSM-5) is highly problematic.

The objective of this talk is to provide a comprehensive and inclusive analysis of clinical research of Internet-use related addictions from a holistic perspective, given the ambiguity of previous research in the field.

A systematic literature review was conducted using the database Web of Science, and a total of 44 empirical and clinically relevant studies were identified.

Results indicated that the published clinical research studies can be categorized into four areas, including (i) treatment seeker characteristics, (ii) psychopharmacotherapy, (iii), psychological therapy, and (iv) combined treatment, each of which will be discussed.

At the present day, both diagnosis and research of Internet-use disorders appears rather broad. Furthermore, there appears a need for developing a gold standard of clinical assessment. This will support the establishment of efficacious and effective treatments which need to be tailored to the individual help seekers’ needs.

Psychiatric disorders are often characterised by cognitive impairment. The Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP) was developed for routine screening of psychiatric patients and is available in several languages.

Using the German version (SCIP-G), 3 studies were conducted: 1. feasibility, reliability, and validity of the SCIP-G were investigated [Sachs et al. Schizophr. Res. Cogn. 2021: 25, 100197], 2. a confirmatory factor analysis was performed [Sachs et al. Schizophr. Res. Cogn. 2022: 29, 100259], and 3. patients with psychotic, bipolar affective, and depressive disorders were assessed before and after standard inpatient treatment including cognitive remediation.

Study 1 included patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective psychosis and thirty healthy controls matched for sex, age, and education. Data were collected at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In studies 2 and 3, patients from the Klinik Hietzing, 1st Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine, Vienna, Austria, were studied. In study 3, all patients received modern pharmacotherapy plus cognitive remediation using the COGPACK® software package version 6.06; based on the ICD-10 criteria for research, 54 patients received an F2 diagnosis (schizophrenia, schizotypal, and delusional disorders), 39 patients met criteria for bipolar disorder (F30 and F31), and 50 for depression (F32 and F33).

In Study 1, significant differences in cognitive performance were found between patients and healthy controls on both versions of the SCIP. The SCIP effectively discriminated between patients and the control group. In Study 2, a two-factor solution in which the Verbal Learning Test-Immediate Recall subtests, Delayed Recall Test of the VLT, and Working Memory Test loaded on the first factor and the Verbal Fluency Test and Psychomotor Speed Test subtests loaded on the second factor yielded good model fit (χ² = 6.7, df = 3, p = .08, χ²/df = 2.2). In Study 3, SCIP total score showed significant improvement after treatment in all three diagnostic groups (p < .001), with no statistically significant interaction between SCIP total score and diagnostic groups (p = .860).

Our data indicate that the SCIP-G is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing cognitive impairment. Good model fit can be achieved with a two-factor solution for the SCIP. Our study is the first to perform a confirmatory factor analysis with the German SCIP version and to test its dimensional structure with a hypothesis-testing approach. Inpatient treatment consisting of pharmacotherapy and cognitive remediation improved cognitive deficits. This improvement in cognitive performance was observed to a similar extent in patients with psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, and depression.

To investigate the relationship between adaptive, maladaptive, and pathological Internet use and mental health problems, in particular depression, self-harm and suicidal behavior among a representative sample of adolescents from different European countries.

A total of 7.000 students from different European countries were recruited for the SEYLE study, a European school-based intervention study, and completed a self-report questionnaire for baseline assessment. Internet behaviors were evaluated by the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire, depression by the BDI-II, self-harm by the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory and suicidal behavior by the Paykel Suicide Scale.

Pathological Internet users, who met the criteria for Internet addiction, showed significantly higher rates of depression, self-harm and suicidal behavior compared to students with adaptive Internet use. Remarkably, there were no significant differences in depression as well as self-harm and suicidal behavior between students suffering from Internet addiction and students presenting maladaptive Internet behaviors.

These results clearly demonstrate that students presenting either Internet addiction as well as maladaptive Internet use are more likely to suffer from depression as well as self-harm and suicidal behaviour. However, the group of students with Internet addiction and the students presenting maladaptive Internet use did not significantly differ from each other. These results suggest that not only Internet addiction, but also maladaptive Internet use, is associated with symptoms of depression, self-harm and suicidal behavior. Therefore, more attention should be paid to adolescents with maladaptive Internet use in order to early recognize depression, self-harm and suicidality in adolescence.

The aim of this study was to examine the the effectiveness of psycho-education delivered via a printed booklet for Schizophrenia patients and their primary caregivers’ in Jordan. It was hypothesised that treatment as usual and psycho-education delivered by a booklet would improve patients’ and primary caregivers’ knowledge of schizophrenia, improve patients’ positive and negative symptoms and reduce their relapse rates, and improve primary caregivers’ burden of care and quality of life better than treatment as usual alone.

A single blind parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted between September 2012 and September 2013 at four mental outpatient clinics in Amman, Jordan. 121 patients with their primary caregivers were allocated randomly to an experimental (Psycho-educational intervention plus TAU in outpatient clinic) group (n = 58) or control (TAU alone) group (n = 63).

Outcomes, measured prior randomization (pre-test), immediately post-intervention and at three months after intervention were patients and primary caregivers’ knowledge of schizophrenia, patients’ positive and negative symptoms and relapse rates, primary caregivers burden of care and quality of life.

Participants receiving psycho-education and treatment as usual had better knowledge of schizophrenia at both post-tests, reduced positive and negative symptoms at post-test 1 and further reduction at post-test 2 compared with participants in control group. Patients hospitalisation and caregivers outcomes had reduced burden of care and better quality of life (P<0.001, all outcomes).

Psycho-education delivered via printed booklets improves outcomes patients and their primary caregivers in Jordan better than treatment as usual. Our hypothesis is supported.

Audit of ADHD caseload identified an open case prevalence of ADHD as 0.2% and 0.6% in Specialist Tier 2 and 3 CAMHS across 2 metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester, as opposed to national prevalence of 1–3%.

We carried out a survey of CAMHS clinicians to identify and address any internal factors that could contribute towards such an under-representation.

A Survey questionnaire was designed to look at staff perceptions, knowledge and training needs in identification and management of ADHD.

Questionnaires were distributed to 50 CAMHS professionals working across these two Specialist CAMHS, which were completed anonymously and returned yielding a response rate of 84%.

1 in 10 CAMHS clinicians did not believe in giving children and young people diagnosis of ADHD and a third believed ADHD was medicalization of behavioural problems rather than neurobiological disorder. Only half of CAMHS clinicians were aware of co-morbidities such as conduct disorder and other developmental disorders.

Although ADHD is a professionally well established condition, scepticism amongst significant number of CAMHS clinicians about the validity of diagnosis, relative risks and benefits of diagnosis continues to exist. This may result in under diagnosis of children who are referred to CAMHS with behavioural difficulties. This has an impact on quality and appropriateness of service provided.

Specific training on ADHD is especially important among CAMHS teams, with clinicians from a multidisciplinary background and differing attitudes towards ADHD.

We anticipate this will help identify missed ADHD cases and improve the quality of care.

Chronic tics and Tourette syndrome (TS) can be comorbid with several neuropsychiatric conditions and may add to the complexity of children's clinical presentation and need for inpatient input.

To review the clinical notes of all children admitted to a National Children's Inpatient Unit (aged up to 12 years) over a 5-year period and analyse their demographic and clinical characteristics including the presence of chronic tics/TS.

To assess the clinical correlates of comorbid chronic tics/TS in an inpatient preadolescent population.

A retrospective naturalistic study of all patients admitted to our unit from 2009 to 2014 was conducted. Children with and without chronic tics/TS were compared in terms of age, gender, family history of mental illness, history of neurodevelopmental problems in siblings, medication on admission and at discharge, length of admission and functional outcomes using Chi2 and t-tests for categorical and continuous data respectively.

A total of 133 children (mean age = 11.2 years) were included. Twenty-five (18.8%) were diagnosed with chronic tics/TS. Autism spectrum disorder was the most commonly comorbid diagnosis (84%), with the second most common being an anxiety disorder/OCD (52%). Statistically significant higher percentages of learning disability, neurodevelopmental problems in siblings, medication at discharge and longer inpatient admissions were identified in children with tics compared with the rest of the sample. No other differences were found.

The prevalence of chronic tics/TS in children needing inpatient treatment is significant. In our sample, chronic tics/TS seem to represent a marker of increased neurodevelopmental deviance and overall symptom severity.

Falls of the elderly to a degree been associated with poor mental health, poor social support and poor physical health.

The current study used purposive sampling compromised from 48 people that visited the emergency department at the Patras University Hospital in 2016. The inclusion criterion for participation was age (> 65 years). Data was collected using WHO's questionnaire, the WHOQUOL-BREF. Finally, data was analyzed using the test t test for independent samples.

The sample constituted by 39.6% of male and 61.4% of female. The average age of the sample was M = 75.89 years. In relation to mental health, the average of the elderly with a history of falls found M = 57.26 (SD = ± 22.87), while the other was found M = 74.45 (SD = ± 15.81). The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05), while physical health although again the first group found to have a smaller average (M = 56.65, SD = ± 22.13) relative to the second group (M = 63.78, SD = ± 12.59) no statistical difference was observed.

These results demonstrates that falls beyond the physical damage that are immediately visible can as well create significant issues in the psychological state of the elderly exacerbating anxiety, fear and social isolation, which has been associated with depression event.

Healthcare professionals report about anxiety, depression, and fear during pandemic COVID-19 worldwide. Resilience becomes the high-powered important mechanism that reduces stress impact on the emotional state of healthcare professionals.

We suggested that effective resilience is associated with less COVID-19’s fear, as well as less anxiety, and depression; healthcare professionals’ mental health depends on age, gender, as well as involvement in the care of patients with COVID-19.

211 healthcare professionals participated in the study and were evaluated with the Connor-Davidson Resilience 10-item scale (CD-RISC-10), Fear of COVID-19 Scale, PHQ-9, GAD-7.

A negative correlation between resilience and fear of COVID-19 (p≤0,01), anxiety (p≤0,01), and depression (p≤0,001) was found. Positive correlations were found between depression, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19 (p≤0,001), between age and fear of COVID-19 (p≤0,05). No statistically significant association between age and depression, anxiety, or resilience was found. The significant difference of COVID-19 fear depending on gender – female vs male (p≤0,05) was found. No statistically significant difference in resilience and emotional state in healthcare professionals depending on the involvement in the care of patients with COVID-19 were found.

Resilience is associated with better mental health in healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Anxiety and depression are connected with the fear of COVID-19 and highly comorbid in healthcare professionals. The elder age and female gender are among the risk factors for a more deteriorated mental state. Fear of COVID-19, mental state, and resilience are not associated with healthcare professionals’ involvement in the care of patients with COVID-19.

The application of scientific evidence in clinical practice management of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is complex. Generally, the usual dissemination process and implementation of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) induce modest changes. A computerized version of a Clinical Practice Guideline for Major Depression (e-CPG-MD) has been integrated in Electronic Clinical Records of Primary Care in Catalonia (Spain). It offers an opportunity to improve clinical results. The design allows access to precise help in the visit itself, improving diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

To evaluate the effects of a multifaceted implementation process of e-CPG-MD, analysing their use and changes in MDD diagnosis.

A cluster randomized clinical trial was performed in 10 primary care centers (PCC) in Barcelona. In five of ten centers, a multifaceted implementation process of the e-CPG-MD was developed during 6 month. The active process includes: interactive training program, regular feedback audit, educational outreach visits and periodic reminders.

The multifaceted implementation of e-CPG-MD was associated with a significant increase in use during the first 6 months (4.1% + 3.1% vs. 52.7% + 7.3%, P < 0.001). In the active centers, the MD diagnosis increased significantly (rate quotient = 1.56, P < 0.001) and the proportion of moderate and severe MD increased (13.6% vs 41.1%, P = 0.002).

A multifaceted implementation method of e-CPG-MD increased significantly its use in active centers at 6 months. Diagnosis of MDD and the proportion of moderate and severe cases also increased significantly.

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the elderly and its consequences are severe.

To measure the prevalence of depression in elderly cancer patients and subsequently determine the sociodemographic and clinical factors correlated with this disorder.

We conducted a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study of patients aged over than 65 years old, suffering from cancer and who had no cognitive impairment, admitted in 2013 in the Oncology and palliative care unit of Gabes regional Hospital (Tunisia). We used a self-rating questionnaire to detect sociodemographics and clinical variables, the Geriatric depression scale (GDS) to assess depressive symptoms, and the Activity of Daily Living to determine the degree of autonomy.

At the end of our investigation, we included 60 patients. The prevalence of depression was 48%. Depression was significantly correlated with: marital status (widower subjects were more depressed (74% vs. 34%, P = 0.007)), less degree of autonomy (80% vs. 38%, P = 0.04), fatigue (62% vs. 26%, P = 0.007), pain (59% vs. 26%, P = 0.02), family psychiatric history (80% vs. 20%, P = 0.02), family history of death by cancer (72% vs. 38%, P = 0.01), WHO condition (67% vs. 34%, P = 0.04) and the presence of co morbidity in particularly diabetes (69% vs. 41%, P = 0.05).

Depression is prevalent in oncogeriatric environments. This could compromise quality of support and care of these patients. Close collaboration between oncologist and psychiatrist is needed to support and relieve these patients.

To find out clinical and social factors contributing to specific female crimes - infanticide and neonaticide.

Psychopathological, psychological, statistical.

A cohort of 16 females who had killed their children was examined. All women were victims of violence by their husbands or partners. Domestic abuse resulted in long-term mental problems of women. Clinical assessment has revealed depression, anxiety, fear, PTSD, alcohol abuse.

There were two types of homicides. Women of the first subgroup (9) had committed infanticide and they displayed pathological altruistic motivation of the crime. Women of the second subgroup (7) had committed neonaticide. Alongside with clinical factors neonaticide reflects mostly social factors. Women of the second subgroup were younger and often exposed to psychogenic situations with high level of stress (financial and housing problems, concealment of illegitimate pregnancy, violence of the partner). In accordance with the Criminal Code of Russia the special article (106) governs infanticide and neonaticide. This law takes into account the psychogenic situation which caused the crime (battered women syndrome) and the fact that at the time of child murder the mental state of mother was affected by childbirth.

In cases of infanticide and neonaticide the court is free to make verdict more lenient and its reflects more humane approach to such complicate phenomenon as child murder.
